Ep. 592: Christian College Challenge, Mifepristone, Colorado Springs Departures

MinistryWatch Podcast

Christina Hello, everyone, I'm Christina Darnell, the managing editor of MinistryWatch. Welcome to the MinistryWatch podcast. In today's extra episode, I talk with Warren Smith about some news items that are slightly (even significantly) outside of our normal charity and philanthropy “beat.” So, Warren, what's up first? Warren Christian colleges are facing a federal challenge. Emily Belz is reporting for Christianity Today that a new Department of Education regulation “could crater” the programs of Christian colleges. Belz writes, “The regulation would label a bachelor's or master's program a “failure” if its graduates do not earn more than their peers without the degree. Students in these ‘failing' programs would be ineligible for federal financial aid.” Christina Why should Christian colleges be held to a lower standard than other colleges? Warren They shouldn't, but the Christian colleges are saying that this is not an apples-to-apples comparison. The graduates of engineering or accounting programs at Christian colleges should be compared to engineering and mathematics graduates of secular schools. But religious and theological studies students are not going into these fields for the money, and they don't have true analogs in secular schools. The new regulation essentially punishes students for their commitment to a ministry career. The Coalition of Christian Colleges and Universities and the Association for Biblical Higher Education are fighting the new rules. Christina On May 4, Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said the abortion inducing drug mifepristone – used in nearly two-thirds of U.S. abortions – can continue to be prescribed via telehealth, dispensed at retail pharmacies, and delivered to patients in the mail. Warren This is a huge setback for the pro-life cause. The Dispatch has provided a helpful “explainer” of what is going on now, especially at the states. Bottom line: thirteen states ban abortion entirely, but with telemedicine, abortions continue in those states. To see the status in all fifty states, click here. Christina Speaking of abortion, Ryan Burge injects some data into the conversation. Warren He has some graphs showing that support for abortion has gone up over the past 50 years, even among evangelicals. In some cases, support has gone up significantly. But that rise masks an important fact. From about 1997 until about 2007, support for abortion went down. Burge does not track the number of actual abortions, but they went down too. Christina So, what happened in 2007? Warren The iPhone. Facebook. Twitter. Correlation does not mean causality. But lots of social theorists from Jean Twenge to Jonathan Haidt have suggested that around 2007 is when we stopped talking to each other, and we retreated into our digital foxholes and started lobbing mortars at those in other foxholes. We used to persuade in the public square. Now, we pummel. The public square has become the scene of a cage fight. Whatever you think of my theory, I do suggest you check out Ryan Burge's data, which you can find here. Christina Colorado Springs has long been the mecca for Christian ministries, but in recent years there are signs that the city is losing its appeal. Warren The latest sign is the announcement that the pro-life organization Save The Storks is moving from The Springs to Dallas. The organization said in a statement that the move was “strategic,” to “centralize operations and expand support for women nationwide.” Christina They're not the first to leave. Warren CauseIQ estimates that about 20 ministries have moved or shut down in Colorado Springs in the past five years. In 2020, the Christian and Missionary Alliance national headquarters left Colorado Springs and moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be nearer the majority of its churches. Colorado Springs is still home to Focus on the Family, Compassion International, The Navigators, Young Life, and other major ministries, but as the city does not have a major airport, and – with traffic – downtown Colorado Springs can be two hours from the Denver airport. Christina We normally don't report about ourselves, but we have a few updates this week. Warren I was recently on Christianity Today's podcast The Bulletin. It was my second appearance in as many months. If you do not subscribe to The Bulletin, you can listen here. I also wanted to let you know that MinistryWatch has won recognition for our work from the Evangelical Press Association. Tony Mator, Kim Roberts, and I won awards at the annual meeting in Nashville. I also wanted to mention that we may need to re-name the MinistryWatch 1000 database. As of this week, we now have 1500 ministries in the database, representing more than $55 billion in annual revenue. Thanks to Kim Roberts, Rod Pitzer, Rob Martin, Stephen duBarry for their contributions to growing our database. Christina In fact, you and I are both in Nashville this week for the EPA conference. You'll be on the road next week, too. Warren Readers in Dallas, Colorado Springs, and Denver. I will also be in Dallas next week, and I will be holding a lunch for readers. I will be Knoxville later in May. I will be speaking at Summit Ministries in Manitou Springs in June, so I will be doing reader lunches in Denver and Colorado Springs during that trip. Let me know if you would like to join us. My email is wsmith@ministrywatch.com. Christina That brings to a close this EXTRA episode of the podcast. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. I'm Christina Darnell, along with Warren Smith. Until next time, may God bless you.

TCP-Talks: Focus on Value: How FinOps Transformed from Cost Cops to Business Enablers

For this special edition of TCP Talks, Justin Brodley is joined by four distinguished guests from the FinOps Foundation following the recent FinOps X conference in San Diego. Rob Martin, Mike Fuller, Graham Murphy, and the TCP team dive deep into the evolution of FinOps from pure cloud cost management to the broader “Cloud Plus” world, the rapid adoption of Focus 1.2, and how AI is transforming both what we manage and how we manage it. About Our Guests Rob Martin has been with the FinOps Foundation for four years, currently focusing on the AI working group, ITAM initiatives, and the rapidly growing public sector adoption. His experience spans training development and strategic initiatives that have helped shape the foundation’s direction during a period of explosive growth. Mike Fuller is one of the founding members of the FinOps Foundation and co-author of the Cloud FinOps book. As a member of the Focus project steering committee, he’s been instrumental in developing the specification that’s standardizing cloud billing data across the industry. Graham Murphy serves as Director of SaaS P&L for Technology One in Brisbane. With 8-9 years in FinOps and recently nominated as both a FinOps Ambassador and Focus Ambassador, Graham brings a practitioner’s perspective from the APAC region and insights on implementing Focus in a SaaS environment. Conference Growth and Evolution The 2025 FinOps X conference in San Diego marked a significant milestone with approximately 2,000 attendees—a substantial increase from the previous year. Despite the larger venue, the conference maintained its intimate feel, allowing for meaningful connections and knowledge sharing. 2:49 Graham: “AI definitely grew a lot this year. A lot more talk about how you go about managing AI, how FinOps is going to drive better value out of your AI investments. And also just a lot of people trying to understand where to start.” The conference format evolved with more senior leadership participation, including executives from PepsiCo, Ticketmaster, and Nubank sharing their FinOps journeys. The quality of presentations notably improved, with practitioners willing to share deeper insights into their mature FinOps programs. The Cloud Plus Revolution A dominant theme throughout the conference was the expansion beyond traditional cloud cost management into what the foundation calls “Cloud Plus”—encompassing SaaS, data center, licensing, and AI costs. 4:31 Mike: “We saw that sort of echoed quite well across many of the breakout sessions by practitioners exactly how they’re sort of incorporating other costs into the conversation of their practices.” 6:56 Rob: “Ticketmaster said something that I loved, which was that they were ‘happily hybrid’… we understand that we’ve got all these different modalities that we’re going to use to deliver value—SaaS models and data center models and cloud models.” This shift represents a fundamental change in how organizations view FinOps, moving from a cloud-specific practice to a comprehensive IT financial management approach.

In this very special episode of the Self Made Podcast, it is a pleasure to welcome all 3 members of a team who rowed the Atlantic Ocean.Clocking an incredible 3000 miles in 37 days, 17 hours and 44 minutes is impressive by any measure but taking on the second biggest ocean in the world just with 2 mates, some ores and a little boat is a task many may not even think was possible! It certainly was not something I felt was possible until I got chatting to Martin here in Hong Kong. In this episode Martin, Matthew and Rob break down what it takes to achieve such a task from how they decided on taking the challenge on, how they trained for it and the importance of telling people and partnering with the Child Fund Rugby charity had on keeping them accountable when times got tough. As you can imagine during such a race there was highs, lows, scary moments and moments of overwhelm and we discuss it all in this show as well as how it felt seeing their families after not only 3000 miles but a 2.5 year timeframe due to the pandemic when they arrived at the finish line in Antiga. If this episode teaches you nothing else it shows how our bodies can do more than we think! So push out of that comfort zone every now and then and do something you can be proud of. Well that and the importance of disposable toilet paper. If you want to know more about the team you can find him on Instagram @martin_muller1, @tresilian.bell and @ro_lenn and as always if you want to know more about my work you can follow me @kingsleydutton also if you want to fund the amazing charity they raced for head to @childfundrugby. and if you enjoy the episode please give us a review on your preferred podcast platform and share on social media tagging me and the team and leave a 5* review on Itunes.Support the show

I met Rob Martin at the ISSA Raleigh chapter's monthly networking event a few years ago. Through the ISSA community, he introduced me to the many people who have become friends and colleagues in the cybersecurity and non-profit space. Rob was always willing to support programs at local schools when I tried to make children more aware of cybersecurity and privacy in middle and high schools. Rob continues to play an instrumental role on the board of the ISSA Raleigh chapter, and as a volunteer teacher and mentor to many people. What I like about Rob is his immense dedication to the education of others in cybersecurity. He's greatly invested to helping minorities, veterans, and underserved communities in gaining access to the resources they need to succeed. He rallies his “battle buddies” to lift people up and give them access to opportunities to learn, grow and work in cybersecurity and beyond. Rob inspires me to continue to grow and do my part in creating learning and growth opportunities for others in cybersecurity. I'm grateful for his presence in my life, the role model he is to me and for sharing his valuable lessons on this podcast. His positive impact and selfless leadership will be felt by many generations to come, I'm certain of it!If his story inspires you too and moves you to invest in yourself, let him know. I bet he would appreciate knowing that you are thriving thanks to his words of wisdom and guidance. Don't forget to pay it forward!https://www.thetrianglenet.com/episode-5-robert-martin/
