In 2024, startups with exclusively female founders received just 1.8 percent of all venture capital dollars, a decline from 2023, according to PitchBook. Add a male co-founder and that number shoots up to 21.7 percent. This despite the evidence suggesting that when women do get funded, they deliver higher returns. Is change likely? And if so, what should we expect? At our SXSW Inc. Founders House, Mansueto Ventures CEO and chief content officer Stephanie Mehta sat down with Rebecca Minkoff, founder and chief creative officer, of Rebecca Minkoff, and Ali Wyatt, co-founder and CEO, of Female Founder Collective and The NORTH, to discuss the state of funding and the challenges facing female founders.

This week on Getting Rich Together, get ready for an unfiltered look into the bold life and financial journey of fashion icon Rebecca Minkoff. In this candid conversation, Rebecca lets us in on the lean early days of hustling to build her brand — from a starting salary of $23k in NYC to paying off $60k in credit card debt to start her business. We also explore her mindset around partnering with her brother, taking on investors, buying real estate, and ultimately selling her company when supply chain struggles started to set in. Rebecca's transparency about the lack of trustworthy financial advice available to founders is an eye-opener, but what struck me most was her driving desire to uplift other women through The Female Founder Collective. Rebecca's legacy goal of empowering women to feel confident, both inside and out, is a powerful reminder that true wealth goes far beyond just money. The most successful entrepreneurs almost appear to have a sixth sense of predicting the future. Breakthrough ideas take a certain amount of foresight and (dare we say it) delusion to succeed in predicting the next big thing. (Because you need to believe what may not be “true” now… before the world catches up.) For designer Rebecca Minkoff – that sixth sense came instinctively. And then her big breakthrough in the early 2000s was actress Jenna Elfman wearing a distinctly Minkoff-designed tee on a late-night TV appearance. The rest was history. Rebecca is a luminary in the world of fashion, synonymous with accessible luxury, her edgy designs and innovative business strategies have taken her namesake brand to incredible reach and revenues. She is not only the co-founder and creative force behind the globally recognized brand Rebecca Minkoff, but also a passionate advocate for women in business via her Female Founder Collective. There is a gap in America's knowledge of women's health. This is no surprise because it wasn't until 1993 that Congress wrote an NIH inclusion policy into Federal law that encouraged women and minorities as subjects in clinical research. Much of what is considered ‘health standards' are largely skewed towards men because of the years when women went unstudied. Even today, there remains gender inequality in healthcare as we face wide gaps in research and treatment ability for areas unique to women.By elevating the importance of women's health, we can deliver better, more inclusive data and insights; more targeted, accessible solutions; and enable better care for women worldwide. Not only that, but we shine a light on the importance of funding and uplifting companies that center around changing the business of our bodies. In celebration of Women's Health Month, I joined Female Founder Collective for a panel discussion on solving women's health inefficiencies. I'm joined by Aagya Mathur (Aavia), Dr. Sophia Yen, MD, MPH (Pandia Health), and Alison Wyatt (Female Founder Collective).Learn more about the Female Founder Collective.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Alice Kim is the Founder and CEO of PerfectDD, a brand created from her own need to find clothes that fit and flatter women with DD+ cups, small to mid-frame. As a size 32DD, Alice struggled her entire life to feel confident in clothes that are not too tight at her chest or oversized on the rest of her body. Learning that the average bra size in the U.S. is a 34DD and millions of women struggle with the same problem, Alice was inspired to create style solutions and to be the voice for these underserved women. Alice believes that getting dressed should be easy so you can focus on being a boss. Born and raised in NYC, Alice is a graduate of Dartmouth College with a degree in economics and began her career in investment banking at Bear Stearns. After three years in finance, she decided to follow her true calling and transitioned into fashion. Alice spent two decades working at renown fashion houses including Shopbop, Diane von Furstenberg, Prada, and Victoria's Secret which taught her to be an expert in product, fit, and design. Alice is a Tory Burch Fellow 2022 and a member of the Female Founder Collective and Dreamers & Doers. Listen to this Takin' Care of Lady Business episode where Alice talks about how hard it is to find clothes that fit people of larger chest sizes, especially when they're teenagers. Alice, who has 20 years of experience in the fashion industry, wanted to change this and started her own company. Here is what to expect on this week's show: - How Alice created products that fill a need for women with larger chests getting lost in the mix - PerfectDD's mission to make clothes tailored for all body types, not just bigger boobs - The importance of getting properly measured and fitted for a bra to avoid a range of problems, from back pain to sagging breasts - Why it is important to focus on the core customer base with a niche business Quotes: “After being in fashion for 20 years, I was like, F this, I have experience, I have the data now, so I'm gonna do it. And interestingly enough, I did pitch my idea a couple of times to other brands, and because people aren't used to it, it's a new category that I'm forging, they thought it was too “niche”, and I didn't get the yes. So, I said, you know what? I know in my heart of hearts, the data, the experience… If someone's gonna do it eventually, but why not me?” – Alice Kim “I think getting dressed should be easy. So you can focus on being a boss.” – Jennifer Justice “The market is there. I think what did well [on TikTok] is not only following the trends, but I talked about something that is “taboo”. You're not supposed to talk about boobs outside of bras, right or swimwear.” – Alice Kim Website http://www.perfectedd.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/perfectdd/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@perfectdd Learn more about your ad choices. “I thought, ‘Wow, life is short. I'm going to commit to this,'” says Alix Greenberg, Founder of ArtSugar, a curated platform offering chic art and decor founded in 2017. Really, ArtSugar is about community and bringing people together. Based in New York's West Village, ArtSugar was born of Alix's love of drawing and art history as well as her devotion to giving back. Top takeaways from today's episode include: Creating a brand ambassador program to spread the word and grow your business Utilizing partnerships as a means to getting yourself out there and grow Prioritize what's important, customer service is #1 Quotes • “I'm a millennial, I built the site for me. If you think about it, why is any of this successful? You feel like there's a need in the market for something that you want as a person for yourself.” (14:02-14:15 | Alix) • “If you can get someone really strong to help get your brand out there so you can do the back end stuff and be behind the computer because you need to, it's a great luxury to have a publicist. I don't think it's a necessity, but to help get yourself on the map, at least in the beginning stages, it's great.” (29:41-30:02 | Alix) • “Make sure you have a good support system around you because it's going to be a lot of tears because success doesn't happen overnight. Maybe the fear is showing us that we're on the right path. Someone who has overcome fear, meets challenges head on and has achieved those goals is accessible luxury global brand designer, Rebecca Minkoff. She's even written a book about it called, “Fearless: The New Rules for Unlocking Creativity, Courage, and Success” which will help you take your rightful place in the driver's seat of your own life and career through focused and fearless business strategies. In 2001, Rebecca designed a version of the “I Love New York” t-shirt which appeared on “The Tonight Show” and became an overnight sensation. In 2005, Rebecca designed her first handbag, which she dubbed the “Morning After Bag,” which ignited Rebecca's career and inspired the lifestyle brand in the years to come. In September of 2018, she established the Female Founder Collective, a network of businesses led by women who invest in women's financial power across a socio-economic spectrum by enabling and empowering female-owned businesses. Rebecca is married to director Gavin Bellour, and they reside in Brooklyn with their three children. It's a business conversation on today's episode as we actively discuss ways to help destigmatize systemic taboos in corporate America.
