Das wichtigste Schubertfestival überhaupt feiert dieses Jahr 50. Jubiläum: die Schubertiade. Alles hat damit angefangen, das ein Student 1972 einen Verein gegründet hat, mit dem Ziel, Konzerte in seinem Heimatort Hohenems in Vorarlberg zu präsentieren. Der Student von damals ist Gerd Nachbauer. Bis heute ist er Geschäftsführer der Schubertiade und spricht mit BR-KLASSIK zum Start der 50. Festivalausgabe.

Du 30 mai au 2 juin se tiendra la 4e édition des Schubertiade de Thônex, un festival de musique classique annuel tout près de Genève. L'événement mélange styles musicaux, jeunes talents locaux et artistes confirmés pour créer un échange intergénérationnel. Cette année, plus de 30 musiciens dont un orchestre sont attendus pour 4 jours de concerts variés.  Nous sommes avec Darryl Bachmann le directeur artistique des Schubertiade de Thônex. 

I was thrilled to discover a while back that the pianist, interviewer, and journalist Zsolt Bognár, who produces the video series Living the Classical Life, is a devoted fan of Countermelody. We recently met up in person in NYC, where we discussed, among many other things, the supremacy of Franz Schubert and how his humanity finds perfect expression in his compositions. Zsolt has graciously provided the introduction to this episode, one of my favorites in the history of the podcast, which I originally produced for the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. As I remarked then, I repeat now: when I am at a loss for words, I always turn to Schubert and his music. In keeping with this month's theme of great baritones, I once again offer this episode, which I have entitled “A Baritonal Schubertiade.” Listeners will discover some singers that we've already heard this month, primarily Bernard Kruysen and Jorma Hynninen, and two more singers (Gérard Souzay and Alexander Kipnis) who will be featured in full episodes next week. Kipnis's recording stems from 1927, while German baritone Roman Trekel's selection was recorded in 2017. Dans le cadre de la 21e édition de la Schubertiade qui se tient à Fribourg le 3 et 4 septembre 2022, toute une série de projets artistiques sont prévus dans le but de se rapprocher du public et de rendre la culture plus accessible. L'un d'eux s'intitule PROXIMITE. Un spectacle composé d'un chœur de plus de 30 personnes, d'un chef d'orchestre, d'une metteuse en scène et du public qui y participe aussi. Pour Ici la Suisse, Muriel Ballaman a rejoint les artistes en pleine répétition.

Dieser Abend, der an die Gstaad Piano Academy anknüpft, welche in diesem Jahr unter der Leitung von Sir András Schiff und Robert Holl (Bariton) der Interpretation von Liedern und Chormusik von Franz Schubert gewidmet ist, wurde als «Schubertiade» angelegt, d. h. als zwanglose Zusammenkunft von Freunden, bei der man vergisst, wer Lehrer ist und wer Schüler. Solche Abende fanden in grossen privaten Wiener Salons wie dem Franz von Schobers statt, der nicht nur des Komponisten Freund, sondern auch ein Dichter war und einige der schönsten Liedtexte verfasste, die Schubert vertonte.

Cette soirée, qui fait écho à la Gstaad Piano Academy consacrée cette année à l'interprétation des lieder et de la musique chorale de Schubert sous la direction de Sir András Schiff et du baryton Robert Holl, a été imaginée dans le plus pur esprit de ce que l'on appelait les «Schubertiade» – entendez: ces rencontres entre amis durant lesquelles on oublie qui est le maître et qui est l'élève, hébergées par de grands salons privés viennois comme celui de Franz von Schober, ami mais aussi poète, auteur de quelques-uns des plus beaux textes de lieder mis en musique par Schubert.

Ils font partie de ces artistes que l'on aime à entendre et réentendre, qui au fil des ans, par leur fidélité et leur talent, ont réussi par constituer une véritable «famille»: celle du Gstaad Menuhin Festival & Academy, rassemblée autour de ce même idéal d'une pratique musicale entre amis, dans un cardre privilégié, magnifié par le fondateur Yehudi Menuhin. Sol Gabetta et Bertrand Chamayou convient cet été à la fête l'une des plus élégantes violonistes de sa génération, la Bavaroise Veronika Eberle, formée à Munich par Ana Chumachenco (pilier de la Gstaad String Academy), pour jouer Beethoven et Schubert – le Deuxième trio et son Andante hypnotique, aujourd'hui inséparable des scènes mythiques du film Barry Lyndon de Stanley Kubrick.

On the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, I am at a loss for meaningful words. Thus I have turned, as I have often done in my own life, and as I did once before at the beginning of the pandemic, to the music of Franz Schubert. I offer to you, my dear listeners, words and music of such profound sorrow, such crushing pain, and such undying hope as only Schubert can provide. As I have throughout this summer, I once again draw on that unquenchable source of great baritones to lend their eloquent voices to my efforts: here I present recordings and performances over 90 years, bookended by recordings by Alexander Kipnis in 1927 and by Roman Trekel in 2017 of the glorious Lieder of Franz Schubert. Other summer appearances include recitals at the Schubertiade, Helsingborg Piano Festival, Mänttä Music Festival, Domaine Forget, Orford Music Festival, the Newport Music Festival, and at the Rosendal Chamber Music Festival with friend and regular collaborator, Leif Ove Andsnes. Recital appearances this season include a return to Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage on the Great Artists Series. He also performs at Wigmore Hall, the George Enescu Festival, Ascona (Switzerland), Prague, Munich, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Moscow State Philharmonic, at the Elbphilharmonie for the Husum Rarities of Piano Music Festival, Monte Carlo, and the Heidelberg Festival, among other dates. Mr. Hamelin is the inaugural guest curator for Portland Piano International, where he opens the season with two solo recitals. He returns to San Francisco Performances – a series with whom he has a long and deeply supportive artistic relationship – as a Perspectives Artist for their 40th Anniversary Season, performing a solo recital; Die Winterreise with tenor Mark Padmore; and the world premiere of his own Piano Quintet, commissioned by SFP and performed by himself and the Alexander String Quartet. An exclusive recording artist for Hyperion Records, in 19/20, Hyperion releases two albums by Mr. Hamelin – one a solo disc and the other with the Takács Quartet. He recently released a disc of Schubert's Piano Sonata in B-Flat Major and Four Impromptus; a landmark disc of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and Concerto for Two Pianos with Leif Ove Andsnes; Morton Feldman's For Bunita Marcus; and Medtner's Piano Concerto No. 2 and Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski. His impressive Hyperion discography of more than 60 recordings includes concertos and works for solo piano by such composers as Alkan, Godowsky, and Medtner, as well as brilliantly received performances of Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, and Shostakovich. He was honored with the 2014 ECHO Klassik Instrumentalist of Year (Piano) and Disc of the Year by Diapason Magazine and Classica Magazine for his three-disc set
of Busoni: Late Piano Music and an album of his own compositions, Hamelin: Études, which received a 2010 Grammy nomination and a first prize from the German Record Critics' Association. Mr. Hamelin was a distinguished member of the jury of the 15 th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017 where each of the 30 competitors in the preliminary round performed Hamelin's Toccata on L'Homme armé; this was the first time the composer of the commissioned work was also a member of the jury. Mr. Hamelin has composed music throughout his career, with nearly 30 compositions to his name. The majority of those works – including the Études and Toccata on L'Homme armé – are published by Edition Peters. Mr. Hamelin makes his home in the Boston area with his wife, Cathy Fuller. Born in Montreal, Marc-André Hamelin is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the German Record Critics' Association and has received seven Juno Awards and eleven GRAMMY nominations. András Schiff und die Schubertiade Schwarzenberg haben überraschend bekannt gegeben, dass man zukünftig getrennte Wege gehen werde. Wir wollten mehr über die Hintergründe erfahren und haben mit András Schiff und Gerd Nachbauer, dem Geschäftsführer der Schubertiade, gesprochen.

Anna Lucia Richter ist längst kein Geheimtipp mehr. Auf den wichtigsten Bühnen des Liedgesangs, bei der Schubertiade und in der Londoner Wigmore Hall, wurde sie gefeiert. Auch bei den BR-KLASSIK-Studiokonzerten war sie zu Gast. Im Sommer wird sie mit Christian Gerhaher Mahlers "Wunderhorn"-Lieder beim Luzern Festival singen. Eine steile Karriere hat die junge Sopranistin bereits gemacht - nun legt sie ihr neues Lied-Album vor. Und es ist Franz Schubert gewidmet. "Heimweh" heißt die CD; erschienen ist sie beim Label Pentatone.

Ein Klavier, eine Stimme, Noten von Schubert: Fertig ist die Schubertiade. Die Sopranistin Carolyn Sampson kommt aus der Alten Musik und wagt sich jetzt erstmals an Schubert. Das Ergebnis sind Interpretationen von großer Klarheit, befindet Kathrin Hasselbeck.

Speaker Biography: Ian Bostridge's international recital career takes him to the foremost concert halls of Europe, Japan and North America, with regular appearances at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg and the Edinburgh, Munich and Aldeburgh festivals. Opera engagements have included Don Giovanni and Ades's The Tempest for the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; The Rake's Progress in Munich; Semele for English National Opera; Don Giovanni for the Vienna State Opera; and Aschenbach (Death in Venice) for both English National Opera and at the Monnaie, Brussels.
