Welcome to Part 2 of our Inaugural Garden Party!
Hi, love. Welcome back. I'm so thrilled you're here because I have a very special episode that I cannot wait for you to dig into. You're about to experience one of our live sessions from inside of my membership, The Secret Garden
We are reunited in Aberdeen, after Laura's couple of weeks on the road selling her handmade wears at The Secret Garden Party. Not only does that explain the length of this episode (us neurodivergent neighbours had a lot of catching up to do!) but it also led us to the topic of this Episode. With Dawn studying 3D Design at University and Laura into her 12th year as a creative entrepreneur with @hathor.hedonism, evidently we are both very much creatives. However, as we always say - ADHD is not a one size fits all disorder! Though ADHDers share similar struggles and traits; the disability effects us all in different ways. We decided to challenge this ADHD creative entrepreneur stereotype with a poll for our instagram followers: @adhdasfemales, and it's fair to say we were very surprised by the results. Thanks to all who participated. We begin this Episode by answering the 'ask us anything' questions from our followers, before diving into the poll and giving our own personal reflections on a topic that definitely holds some weight; but we argue, this could potentially be due in part to RSD as much as anything else. We share some 'information' from online articles on the topic, one of which makes a claim so untrue, irresponsible and insulting that Laura has a meltdown and shares some choice words for the 'journalist' at multiple points. sorry, not sorry! We also debunk the myth that ADHD meds destroy creativity. We conclude with our 'differences', 'the most ADHD thing we have done this week' and some VERY EXCITING news from Dawn!!!!!!!TRIGGER WARNING: The rage evoked by said article makes this episode even more sweary than usual, so be warned. We cover some sensitive topics including: Severe mental health issues, depression, anxiety, self loathing, relationship struggles, and people disbelieving and diminishing our invisible disabilitySupport the show
This week we talk to the amazing Isobel Anderson. After a career as an artist which has amassed over 25 million Spotify streams, Isobel set up the online community the Female DIY Musician, which helps female-identifying aspiring musicians and producers to find their confidence in an arena that has always been male-domianted. Last year, she started the podcast Girls Twiddling Knobs, which she describes as brining a "feminist perspective to all things music tech", and in our opinion is a nourishing and refreshing listen for any creative, male or female. Isobel also has an MA and PhD in Sonic Arts, and her sound-works have been performed internationally, while she has also been the recipient of backing from the PRS Foundation's Women Make Music Fund. She has also published in academic journals, such as Organised Sound and The Journal of Sonic Studies. Isobel's music has been archived in The British Library and The British Music Collection, and previous live performances include Glastonbury's acoustic stage, The Secret Garden Party and London's Proud Galleries. We spoke to Isobel about her journey to this point (which has been far from smooth), and what inspired her to educate other women and girls in music production. We ask what can be done to make the world of music production a more welcoming place for women, and get some great insight and surprising reactions from Isobel on this and a range of other topics. Here's a link to Girls Twiddling Knobs - we highly recommend a listen to episode #1 if you want to get more background on Isobel and her career to date. It's a fascinating listen. https://www.femalediymusician.com/gtkpodcast https://www.isobelanderson.com/ The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. Pete Loved in conversation with David Eastaugh. Pete Loveday is a British underground cartoonist. He drew many comics charting the adventures of hippie character Russell including Big Bang Comics, Big Trip Travel Agency, Plain Rapper Comix printed by AK Press. He draws like Robert Crumb or Gilbert Shelton with lots of cross-hatching. Big Bang Comics is Britain's most successful underground comics. Recurring themes in the comics are drugs, Rock festivals, environmentalism etc. Plain Rapper Comix #2 is Loveday's pamphlet in comic book form on a history of hemp and why it would be beneficial for the environment to replace tree paper with hemp paper and he practices what he preaches by being the first publication in modern times to be printed on such paper. The Russell comics were reprinted in book form Russell, The Saga of a peaceful man published by John Brown Publishing. Russell reappeared in the Big Trip Travel Agency series published by AK Press (6 volumes); which are a series of short stand alone cartoons and also a serialised longer story. Issue 2 featured The Levellers. After Big Trip 5 (1999) Russell's story was to be continued in Volume 6, which it seemed would never appear. Then in 2012, to many fan's delight, AKPress made Big Trip 6 available through their website and through a mainstream Internet retailer where some reviews of Loveday's classic comics can also be read. As a champion of British small press comics he drew lots of multi-artist jam strips in B. Patston's Psychopia. He drew a Russell comic in Danny King's Blah, Blah, Blah! He used to have a stall at Glastonbury Festival, selling his comics and other items and now, after a gap of more than a decade, has a stall at the Secret Garden Party and Beautiful Days, both festivals for which he produces artwork. Although he has had some problems with his eyesight these are finally being resolved, and have never really prevented him from producing a wide range of artwork, ranging from advertising posters (including some unlikely billboard art for Nike) through greetings cards, postcards, CD and record sleeve designs, book illustrations to flyers and T-shirt designs. In July 2018 Freedom Seeds, a UK based seed bank, named a cannabis strain ‘Big Trip’ in tribute to Loveday. Pete created a logo for the product. Loveday attributes his black sense of humour to having spent the 1969 Summer of Love disembowelling chickens in a poultry processing factory, a traumatic experience which left him with a morbid fear of death. He lives in Devon with his wife Kate.

It was during this time that she also embarked on her next venture and co-founded Wilderness Festival where she was the Co-Creative Director & board member until 2016. Finally in 2016, elrow, the famous immersive party promoter, received investment to scale the company globally and therefore approached Jo to creatively lead the charge as they take over the world. The book, Sex, Drugs & Rock & Roll – The Science of Hedonism and Hedonism of Science by Zoe Cormier, explores how hedonistic impulses inform our highest pursuits, and how the renegades of science have illuminated the secrets of our deepest impulses. I came across Zoe when I was exploring my happy hormones at Secret Garden Party – she used to run events celebrating scientific discovery at music festivals. This book blew my mind, especially the section on drugs that discusses how our relationship with narcotics helps us to identify many of our most powerful neurotransmitters such as dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins. I know few people in their 30s who are actively thinking about their legacy but the writer Marcus Golden Barnes is leading by example. I first met Marcus at Amsterdam Dance Event in 2015. He was sliding through the crowded lobby of the Dylan hotel blowing kisses. He was a full blown festival afloat on a black ocean of trench coats and techno. Marcus is a music journalist, a graffiti artist and a DJ. He’s the Techno Editor for Mixmag and has contributed to every major publication I know in the UK. He’s produced two major books, Around the World in 80 Raves and his most recent Around the World in 80 Record Stores. He was once Fest300’s European Editor and he was my guide to shenanigans at the final Secret Garden Party. On the podcast, Marcus talks about why he’s so popular with the artists he interviews, the quirky record stores he profiles in his new book and how Vipassana meditation taught him to be nice to himself. Most of all we discuss legacy and how Marcus uses dance music to make the world a better place, from mentoring aspiring writers to promoting mental health. Benjamin Franklin famously wrote: If you wou’d not be forgotten As soon as you are dead and rotten, Either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing. Marcus it seems, is intent on doing both.
Ever wondered what it would be like to be a legit rockstar? In this episode, Caspar speaks to 32 year old rock musician Michael Lars Godde. He has travelled the world playing original music composed with his two bands "Me" and "Other Animals" (Facebook, Instagram). Michael has shared stages with the likes of Portishead, the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and has played festivals like Secret Garden Party and Big Day Out. Michael shares his experience in the music industry, along with why he prefers busking to big shows, his love of exercise to keep his spirits up, and his parallel career in social work. This podcast was produced and edited by Nina Roxburgh, recorded at Lupine Studios, and features the track “Oh Lordy” by Other Animals.

Going to a music festival has become a rite of passage for the post GCSE teenager. Their excitement at the prospect of a long weekend of unsupervised possibility is perhaps only matched by the anxiety of their parents who know exactly what that might entail. Those fears may have been heightened by the news that a music festival in Cambridgeshire has just become the first UK event of its kind to offer people the chance to have their illegal drugs tested to establish the purity of content before they take them. The testing facility, at the Secret Garden Party, was offered with the co-operation of the police. The organisers said the aim was to reduce harm from drug taking and promote welfare. The group conducting the forensic tests this weekend hope other festivals will follow suit. Is this a pragmatic and realistic approach to drug taking that will save lives or a tacit endorsement that will cost them? Is it part of a gradual slide toward decriminalisation of drug taking? According to the 2016 European Drug Report, ecstasy has surged in popularity in Britain among those aged 15-34 in the past three years. Is it logical on the one hand to criminalise the sale of legal highs, but on the other to make it easier to take an illegal drug like ecstasy? Needle exchanges have long been available to registered intravenous drug addicts. Is this a logical extension or does discovering people have illegal drugs and then allowing them to walk away and use them, while the police turn a blind eye, cross a moral Rubicon? It will make it safer for people who want to take drugs, but what about those people who want to attend a festival knowing it is drug free? How should we balance those competing moral goods? Witnesses are Dr Ian Oliver, Johann Hari, Steve Rolles and Deirdre Boyd.

Australian DJ /producer Uone is the next guest to step up for a Balance Selections podcast. Known for his fun and energetic DJ sets, Uone has become a regular on lineups for some of the more upfront global festivals and events. With a sound that initially drew on elements from all genres of the electronic sphere, he has now found his niche in producing and playing deep, chunky and twisted tech house - and it is with this resolve that he has managed to carve out a name for himself on the international circuit. Raised in Melbourne’s Peninsula Coast, demand for Uone's sets has truly transgressed the borders of Australia with invites to play at Burning Man (Nevada), Fusion (Berlin), Glade (UK), Universo Paraleo (BR), Boom (Portugal), Ozora (HU), Eclipse (AUS), and more recently, the Rainbow Serpent Festival in Australia. He will be returning to Europe and the United States for a string of events over the Northern Hemisphere summer which includes Burning Man in the United States, the Secret Garden Party in the United Kingdom, and the Heinz Label Night in Berlin. Production-wise, Uone has released a steady stream of dance floor weapons which has led to him being signed with Beef Records and Chameleon Recordings, and his array of deep house and techno tracks has found a home on labels like Katermukke, Heinz, Light My Fire and Tonkind Records. As Uone celebrates his 15th year of Dj-ing, he delivers a mix that is filled with audible nostalgia as he opts for orchestral melodies and percussive blends that signal to the old and new. Watch out for tracks and remixes from a diverse group of artists like Tube & Berger, Loco Dice, Maya Jane Coles, and of course Uone himself – all bookended by a special Balance Intro and Outro which Uone has produced exclusively for this podcast. This is my DJ set from Secret Garden Party at the weekend. Well, once again, it's a remake cos my recording somehow messed up. I really should get to grips a bit more with this new equipment I'm taking on the road! It's an electric-funk-tastic mix spanning many decades and the majority of the tunes are my own re-edits. It truely was a unique set that worked just as well as I'd hoped it would. Despite the conditions I was smiling throughout and thats cos you were too! Those of you who were there will remember the shakey start so at least I could rectify that this time around. The conditions were less than ideal, I couldn't see any of the displays and I was using kit I hadn't used before! Got there in the end though, I do like to throw myself in at the deep end! ;) The hardest thing for me was the intense heat as the sun shone straight on me the whole time, it wasn't helped by the extremely hot cat outfit I decided to wear either! Credit to everyone who danced throughout cos they must have lost a good half stone in those conditions, now thats dedication! Hope you enjoy this one and may I recommend you go and dance in the sun while you give it a listen, ideally beside a lake for best effect! X
