Have you ever wondered how advertisers know if their brand initiatives are working correctly? I am a huge proponent of data and Jeff Vidler, Founder of Signal Hill Insights is helping podcasts and advertisers measure their efforts with brand lift studies, surveys, and more.    “One thing we do have with podcasting is we have digital data that gives us census level data as a baseline that we can use and work from that and really give advertisers a chance to see how the mediums working.”   Jeff is able to work closely with other companies, such as Triton Digital, to blend survey and census data together to get a clearer picture of who is listening.    “You've got apps, like Spotify, that will give you demographics, but that's filtered through who uses those apps. It's not necessarily a reflection of their entire audience. There are household graphs that you can get, but IP addresses are not personal. So we think that surveys are an important step toward getting demographics into podcasts measurement.    To connect with Jeff, reach out to him at jeff@signalhillinsights.com or visit their website: https://signalhillinsights.com/   If you get value from the content, please consider subscribing and leaving a review! “Voice does communicate so much more meaning than what you can read. No matter how well written it is, it's still the voice that really carries the meaning of the feeling of that, and you know as a voice actor how important that is and how much more it communicates.” Jeff Vidler This week's the second part of my interview with Jeff Vidler, audio researcher, media analyst and the founder and president of Signal Hill Insights, as we discuss smartphones, Clubhouse, the future of podcast growth and marketing, and his latest audio studies.   The Problem of Downtime We continue with a look at how much the audio industry has changed over the past ten years, especially as smartphones, smart speakers, and streaming audio have come to replace traditional radio. "One of the things that smartphones do," Jeff explains, "is that they solve the problem of downtime when my mind is free but my eyes are busy and I'm bored." Despite the changing technology, he notes that radio programming itself has turned out to be more resilient than we might have expected, with more 18-to-34-year-olds listening to the radio than reading newspapers or watching network television.   Clubhouse vs Podcasts Jeff and I also talk about the emergence of Clubhouse as an entirely new form of audio media, and whether it'll replace or enhance the role of podcasts. "Being part of something," he notes, "interacting with something in real-time, is different than settling into a podcast and losing yourself in a podcast, in a story that's being told." We also discuss Apple's recent change to its podcast language, and whether you "subscribe" or "follow" podcasts.   A Whole New Vista We wrap up the interview with a look at the Megalab Truth Test and the surprising insights it offered about how well people can detect a lie, and some of the upcoming projects Jeff's working on right now, such as the Radio on the Move study for the Canadian radio industry as well as commercial podcasts and radio contests. "For many years in radio research you weren't finding many new things,” he says, “the last ten years... has opened a whole new vista in audio." “It's a gift to listeners. If you make your podcast a gift to listeners, they'll appreciate the fact that you gave them that gift and they'll remember you for that and they'll think better of you for that as a brand.” Jeff Vidler   This week's guest has remained at the forefront of changing audio landscape. From his start as a radio station manager and program director, he's spent more than twenty-five years in research, sharing his passion for audio with North America's major broadcast companies. More recently, he's been doing the same with podcast publishers. His name is Jeff Vidler and we'll be talking about his insights into this steadily growing media segment. For those of you curious to learn more about the world of podcasting and how things have changed over the years, this is definitely the interview for you.   Listening to the Funnies Jeff tells us how he grew up with an older brother who wanted to become a radio DJ and, as a child, helped his brother cut demos for his first radio job using a portable record player and the family's home stereo system. Radio had a powerful early influence on Jeff, and he tells us about the radio program that awakened his passion for broadcasting and the audio industry: a local show that turned the newspaper comics into comedy skits every Sunday morning. “I can remember even thinking,” he tells us, “this company is so cool that they're allowing me to hear the funnies brought to life.”   A Really Exciting Time Next we take a closer look at Jeff's career and how much it's evolved and grown since those early days in front of his brother's turntable. After starting his audio career as a copywriter, music director, and radio consultant, he moved on to media research in everything from print and digital media to television and radio. “In the last four or five years the whole audio world has opened up with the growth of music streaming and particularly the growth of podcasting,” he explains. “It's a really exciting time for audio.”   Nobody Really Knows One of the challenges that he's working to overcome is the lack of marketing research into podcasts and new media. As Jeff puts it, "nobody really knows that much about what gets listened to and who's listening... and is it working for the advertiser." Although podcasts have seen incredible growth over the past five years, ad spending has lagged behind it for a variety of reasons such as segmentation, measurement, and the sheer number of podcasts out there. Podcasts By Brands We also talk about his research into the emerging market of branded podcasts, or, as one of the companies that Jeff's worked with prefers to call them, original podcasts by brands. “They're not trying to sell,” he explains, “they're telling stories." Despite having no editorial impact and having a very light brand touch, they've turned out to be surprisingly effective at garnering brand recognition and creating a positive association with the podcast's listeners.   Be sure to check back next week for part two as we take a closer look at the rise of smartphones and smart audio, Clubhouse's impact on podcasting, and some of Jeff's latest market research. Dressage horse-riding, or as Dylan says "dancing with a horse", sounds hard enough.. but imagine trying to do it without any forearms or hands! How do you hold the reigns?!?! That's what 17-year-old Abigail Vidler does with the help of some special equipment, and she's so good at it she hopes to compete in the 2024 Paralympics. In her spare time she's also completing her Year 12 studies, getting her driver's license (yep with no hands)… all in the middle of a pandemic. A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Muir Vidler is a Scottish photographer whose work, often exploring humorous cultural and visual contradictions, straddles the increasingly blurred line between fine art and documentary. Born in Edinburgh, Muir previously worked as a chef, street entertainer and cruise ship photographer, where he learnt the rudiments of photography and managed to save enough money to enrol in a post-graduate diploma in photojournalism at the London College of Printing. In 2001 his portrait series of ageing British rebels and mavericks, Rebels Without a Pause was published by the Sunday Times Magazine. Since then Muir has remained in London and divides his time between commissions for magazines, corporations and record labels and personal, self-assigned projects. Muir's work has been exhibited internationally and has appeared in publications such as the New York Times, Time Magazine, Vogue and Vanity Fair. He is represented by Rove Gallery in the UK and the Mindy Solomon Gallery in the USA and is currently working on his first photobook, entitled Everything Is True. In episode 59, Muir discusses, among other things: The pros and cons of sharing an office His new book project, Everything Is True His style of portrait photography Growing up - California vs. Scotland What he learnt as a cruise ship photographer (250th at F11) Shooting self- assigned projects on spec. Jeff Vidler has been involved in research for a long time. After the podcast had been recorded, I remembered a time when, as program director of CJFM in Montreal, he would use his research to entice clients as much as listeners. As the years went on, I worked with Jeff on music testing, perceptuals, and format finders. All my experiences have been positive as research generally shone a light, showed direction, and moved our stations to where they needed to go. As the industry has changed, Jeff's research now includes the more complex listening habits and rituals that exist across all platforms. We also had Peter Anthony Holder come on the show to tell us about his show, the Stuph File. If you would like to have this show on your radio station, please email him peter@thestuphfile.com The podcast is brought to you by NLogic and the new cloud based platform Lens. http://bit.ly/nlogicso Please take the Podtrac survey - It helps us do a better job. http://survey.podtrac.com/start-survey.aspx?pubid=c-pwg3hNJ1tz&ver=standard

Diagrammatic: Beyond Inscription? - 2 December 2016 - Anthony Vidler: How to Do Things with Diagrams

Keynote Anthony Vidler (Cooper Union / Yale University) How to Do Things with Diagrams Convenors: Lukas Engelmann (University of Cambridge) Caroline Humphrey (University of Cambridge) Christos Lynteris (University of Cambridge) Summary Diagrams inhabit a liminal space between representation and prescription, words and images, ideas and things. From key moments of scientific and intellectual innovation (Darwin’s tree-diagram, Levi-Strauss’s diagram of the raw and the cooked, Lacan’s L-scheme, Waddington’s epigenetic landscape image and Francis Crick’s DNA double helix sketch) to everyday uses in all spheres of social, political, economic and cultural life, the diagram seeks resemblance to the empirical yet aspires to generalization. Conversely, employed across the disciplines as a thinking tool, the diagram hence holds the promise of transforming abstract issues into graspable images and translating the unseen into intelligible and actionable form. Both convincing and misleading and always positioned at the threshold of vision and the unseen, diagrams operate as abstractive and constitutive components of empirical realities. This conference aims to explore the interdisciplinary, shared traits of diagrammatic thinking so as to go beyond the notion of simplification, of “drawing information together”, which forms the usual analytical ground for understanding syntactic visualizations in the sciences and humanities. Rather than seeing diagrams as systems of linkages, the aim of the conference is to explore the dialectic of inscription and erasure as an inherent and generative trait of diagrammatic practices. Questions to be raised in the conference revolve around the following themes: How does the visual and logical indeterminacy of diagrams, their resistance to being fully perceived as images or understood as logical arguments, define their operation as ways of reasoning? And to what extent does diagrammatic reasoning extend beyond the realm of diagrams as visual/textual objects? By bringing together ethnographic, historical and philosophical perspectives on the diagram, in its applications across the disciplines, this conference aims to explore its role at the pivot of modern transformations and aporias between abstraction and form.

From continent to continent across the globe, Mark Vidler and Catherine Young reveal that order is everywhere on Earth. On remote islands, soaring summits, and level deltas, they unveil natural topographic patterns related to pi, the golden ratio, and right-triangle geometry. And as the planet’s design emerges, it becomes clear that this hidden order in nature decided the location of ancient monuments the world over. Through detailed maps, Vidler and Young show how the locations of megalithic monuments reflect and enhance a natural pattern on the Earth that connects its major features. The rows of standing stones at Carnac in France, for example, point to the summits of Mount Everest and K2, and Angkor Wat in Cambodia is on a straight line joining Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa and the tip of Cape Comorin in India. The authors examine the geography of many islands and each continent, including Antarctica, to show how the highest peak on each landmass falls on a line connecting coastal extremes. They reveal how circles of standing stones and man-made mounds mark intersections of these lines. They explore the connection between the Nazca lines in Peru and the Amazon, Nile, and Ganges deltas and explain how the locations of the Giza pyramids, Stonehenge, and Machu Picchu are integrated into the natural design on Earth. As they uncover geometric patterns on the Earth line by line, point by point, the authors reveal how the world’s ancient monuments represent a form of transglobal communication that far predates the written word.

The Candid Frame: Conversations on Photography

When it comes to portraits, people who are being their unique selves can result in the best photographs. In a world where digitally enhanced versions of ourselves are displayed everywhere, it’s refreshing to see images where real people are themselves. It’s made all the better when people who take pride in their uniqueness present themselves in front of the photographer’s lens. Muir Vidler is a editorial/commercial photographer who makes the most of such opportunities in all of his work. You can see it showcased especially well in his project, Rebels Without a Pause where he photographs some of Britain’s aging rebels and Mavericks. Vidler’s work possesses its own uniques by adeptly using color and setting to produce wonderful photographs. He is also a great example of a photographer who allows his curiosity to inspire his photography.   Resources:   Muir Vidler http://muirvidler.com     Mimi Mollica http://www.mimimollica.com     The Candid Frame http://ibarionex.net/thecandidframe/     Email info@thecandidframe.com
