Christmas is coming, and I want you to remember, YOU are WORTHY, and YOU are ENOUGH just the way you are. Family and friends can bring up so much for us this time of year, and it can be hard. Do NOT discredit the year you have had, or all the things you have done. Do not throw it all out the window if you hear something triggering that leads you into a full-blown self-limiting belief frenzy. NOPE!! We are breaking these patterns, we are breaking these habits. This is YOUR time sister!! And I want you to be so proud of yourself.I think that especially as women we are so good at overlooking all we have done because those accomplishments seem too small. Take a moment to give yourself gratitude and truly stop and realize the love you have for yourself. Here's a link to a recent post I put up that can walk you through the self talk. You can do this in REAL TIME!! https://www.instagram.com/p/C1H3CG0x3-I/Plus!! If you didn't already know, my Self-Love Workbook will be dropping on Amazon any day now! In her work as a therapist, Rachel Johnson '17, G'19 knew she was making a difference in the lives of her patients. But she also realized her work wasn't impacting an often overlooked segment of the population when it comes to mental wellness and holistic health: Black people. So she founded Half Hood Half Holistic in her adopted hometown of Syracuse as a holistic wellness business that allows Black individuals, couples and families to have the space to heal and work on their mental, physical and spiritual health. The author of the "Self Love Workbook for Black Women," Johnson discusses what holistic health means to her, what healing looks like for Black people, why it's important to debunk the stigmas and stereotypes associated with mental health services, how she helps make holistic healing accessible for all who seek it, the important role holistic healing plays in helping communities heal from racial harm, and how a program called Say Yes to Education helped Johnson hone her skills at Syracuse University.

When you have autoimmune disease, it's common to feel disconnected from your body and even betrayed by your body. Yet we live in our bodies, so this creates a complicated relationship with ourselves. Instead of self-love, we might end up feeling self-hate. How can we change that? How does self-love, or the lack of self-love, impact our wellbeing, both mentally and physically? My guest today is Dr. Shainna Ali, a mental health counselor, educator, and advocate. She is also the author of the Self-Love Workbook series. They are practical guides with concrete action steps. They go beyond a misty view of self-love and teach skills we can apply in our daily lives.

In Episode 77: Keeping Her Daughters Legacy Alive Through Acts Of Kindness, Genny Jessee joined Jill Devine to talk about the June Jessee Memorial Foundation. In addition, she talked about June's short time on this earth, as well as Genny's perspective as a mother to a medically complex child and a mother to two healthy children. Through the June Jessee Memorial Foundation, care packages are sent to families with children courageously facing medically complex conditions. Genny Jessee's team sent one of the care packages to Jill so Jill would understand how important these packages are to the caregivers. One of the items inside the care package was a workbook, Self-Love Workbook for Women: Release Self-Doubt, Build Self-Compassion, and Embrace Who You Are. The author of that workbook is Megan Logan, MSW, LCSW. A little bit about Megan: With 20 years of counseling experience, I have developed strong clinical skills in a variety of mental health settings. I have specialized training and experience working with mood disorders, grief/loss, eating disorders, sexual abuse, personality disorders, trauma and children/adolescents. I use a variety of clinical frameworks, including Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Play Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy. I am continually learning new techniques and interventions to provide the most effective and efficient therapy possible. While experience is essential in providing quality services, so is connection. Jill has been digging through the workbook and knew other women would benefit from it, so she invited Megan on the podcast to talk through some of the things in the workbook. Have you ever read a self-improvement book? Some of the current titles are Self-Love Workbook for Women, Good Vibes, Good Life, and the classic How to Win Friends and Influence People. I did some research on Amazon and found there are 80,000 titles in the Self Help category. Wow! People really want to improve themselves! And, people have been interested in self-improvement for quite a while. Did you know the very first self-improvement book in modern times was a book titled Self-Help written by Samuel Smiles and published in 1859. That's before the U.S. Civil War.1 The market for self-improvement is huge! If you include books, other products, and seminars by motivational speakers, the market in the United States is $11 billion.2 Like I said, people want to improve themselves. But think about it – is the market so big because all those books work, or is it big because people keep trying different things that don't work? I wonder. Rather than self-improvement, maybe we need power from outside ourselves. 2 Thessalonians 1:11 says, “With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.”(NIV) If we want to develop goodness, then we need God's power -- his Spirit. He is the source of improvement in our character!
