Puedes contar mentalmente. We're often told that the path to healing is a straight line from pain to wholeness but what if the journey to reclaiming ourselves is more intricate, more nuanced, and more beautifully complex than we've been led to believe? What if healing is not about reaching a destination, but about compassionately attending to the suffering that has shaped us, and courageously embracing the full spectrum of our human experience?Today, Dr Scott is joined by Dr. Arielle Schwartz , a clinical psychologist, yoga instructor, and pioneer in the field of resilience-informed therapy. With a deep understanding of trauma recovery, EMDR therapy, and somatic psychology, Dr. Schwartz has dedicated her career to helping individuals navigate the nonlinear path of healing, one that honors both the wounds and the innate resilience within us all.In this conversation, they'll delve into the intricacies of the healing journey, exploring how trauma becomes encoded in our bodies and how attending to these experiences with mindfulness and self-compassion can lead to profound transformation. Together, Dr Scott and Arielle discuss the importance of creating a safe and accepting inner space, where all parts of ourselves are welcome, and how this radical self-acceptance is key to integrating the fragmented aspects of our being. But this isn't just about personal healing; it's about reclaiming our power, our agency, and our inherent wholeness. Dr. Schwartz will guide us through the process of taking self-responsibility for our lives, of owning our stories and our potential for growth and the emergence of new possibilities. Recovery from trauma is not simply about healing the mind but about healing the body as well. Often the approach when treating trauma is solely focused on the mental and emotional effects and fails to address the physiological imbalances that trauma leaves behind on our bodies. In Dr. Arielle Schwartz's newest book “Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery: Applying the Principles of Polyvagal Theory for Self-Discovery, Embodied Healing, and Meaningful Change”, she guides the reader using yoga practices to help release the burdens of trauma and begin the journey of healing the psyche and the body. The book utilizes a variety of principles to provide a deeper understanding of how our bodies and brains react to stress and trauma leaving the reader feeling informed and empowered. Listen to our conversation with psychologist & author Dr. Arielle Schwartz as we learn about the importance of embodied healing in treating and recovering from trauma. Dr. Arielle Schwartz, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist, prolific author, wife and mother with a passion for treating individuals with trauma. Dr. Schwartz runs a private clinic where she treats clients as well as trains other therapists in her Resilience-Informed Therapy approach for helping people recover after experiencing trauma. She has also been teaching therapeutic yoga since 2008 with a specific focus on nervous systems recovery after trauma. Dr. Schwartz's is also the author of “The Complex PTSD Treatment Manual: An Integrative, Mind-Body Approach to Trauma Recovery” which guides clinicians through successfully treating patients who have had prolonged exposure to traumatic situations. The manual focuses on utilizing mindful body awareness to build distress tolerance, cultivate self-compassion, and facilitate trauma recovery drawing from Dr. Schwartz's own years of experience in the field.  She is also the author of “Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery: Applying the Principles of Polyvagel Theory for Self-Discovery, Embodied Healing and Meaningful Change”. I had an educational and fascinating discussion with Dr. Arielle Schwartz about her journey into the amazing work that she is doing today, which included the trauma experienced as a result of being the child of a healthy divorce, and how living in two households impacted her psychologically and psychologically.  She explained how we store trauma in the connective tissues, the fascia, how this affects our bodies, and how this leads to headaches, migraines and chronic pain. She shared the why and how therapeutic yoga works and how the poses and breathing truly helps with healing our bodies from whatever we have experienced in the past. We talked about why EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which it was the first time that I learned this, and why vagus nerve exercises should be part of our daily self care routine! Dr. Schwartz, is a psychologist, an internationally sought-out teacher, a yoga instructor, and leading voice in the healing of PTSD and complex trauma. She is the author of six books, including EMDR Therapy and Somatic Psychology, The Post Traumatic Growth Guidebook, and Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery that I just finished reading and loved. You can find and learn more about Dr. Schwartz on her webside at www.drarielleschwartz.com on Facebook or on YouTube where she has many recordings of her yoga practice and more. Please look into her upcoming Vagus Nerve Course in August of 2023!   I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did, and if you did, please share it, and rate it to help me and my guest inspire as many people as possible to do this work.

Today on Biology of Trauma, we conclude our series with Dr. Arielle Schwartz on identifying trauma and addressing the freeze response. In this episode, we hear a story of hope from Laura Bautista, a 21-day journey graduate who recovered from MS by healing her trauma.    Laura was diagnosed with degenerative MS at age 21. Western medicine determined that she had a bleak future of pain, loss of function, and even death. Like all autoimmune diseases, many seemingly random symptoms were dismissed and normalized throughout her life. It wasn't until she discovered functional medicine that Laura learned to listen to her body. For seven years, Laura slowly detoxed and began tracking her nervous system leading to a full recovery from what was diagnosed as a progressive disease.   There was never an exterior event to pin Laura's traumatic response on. However, tracking built awareness that allowed her to remove barriers to her healing. The body is naturally designed to heal itself, but stress, unhealthy foods, and lifestyles burden your body. This capacity exists within every person, and somatic tools are resources along your journey to your natural state of wellness. Simply, learning to slow down saved Laura's life. Key Takeaways: [2:20] Laura's story from progressive MS to 10 years symptom-free [4:40] Auto-immune diseases progress over the years until it becomes extreme enough to diagnose [9:00] Shifting focus from the disease to restoring function to the body  [14:58] The body heals itself when it feels calm, not when you demand it to be calm [15:55] Removing barriers to healing because the body is designed to constantly heal [18:55] Presence heals trauma, not cathartic therapies that retraumatize the mind and body [20:38] How to access a safe place to stop the spiraling  [23:20] Tracking is a basic tool that allows you to build awareness and gain perspective [24:28] How the pace of life influences your health and differentiating stress from trauma [27:42] Integrating stillness and observation into life inhibits stress from progressing into trauma [33:00] Finding hope when life feels out of control  [35:10] Detoxing from what you are not so that you can come home to yourself   Find More From Dr. Arielle Schwartz: Center for Resilience Informed Therapy    How do you know if you have trauma? Today on Biology of Trauma, we continue our analysis of the freeze response with Dr. Arielle Scwartz, Ph.D. There are three key phases to overcoming the freeze response, and in this episode, we discuss how time plays a crucial role in trauma healing. Shifting from a performance relationship to a listening relationship with your body allows you to tap into your own physical intuition. Instead of overextending yourself out of fear, your body can intuit when it is time to rest and act and allows you to slow down, giving you the time to overcome your freeze response.   Generally, the brain is thought of as the controller of our emotions, but the autonomic nervous system stores trauma and produces the freeze response pattern. Intricate systems of neurotransmitters expand beyond the brain and into the heart, belly, and intestines which is why our body holds so much wisdom. The body uses sensation, aversion, and even pain to communicate. If you ignore these bodily sensations, the mind tends to push you beyond your limits, eroding your mental and physical health.    Once you begin to take the time to be curious about why your body feels a certain way, you can take steps to live in a way that supports your body instead of fighting against it. Awareness and cooperation with your physical body are essential to living a peaceful life and overcoming the freeze response.   Key Takeaways: [1:35] Polyvagal Theory and how our survival system shuts us down when it doesn't feel safe  [2:00] Our nervous system has evolved to strive for connection, love, and social safety [4:00] Instead of fight or flight, traumatic neglect elicits despondency or complete withdrawal  [9:00] Building tolerance of your emotions and sensations encourages mindful curiosity  [13:10] Bodily wisdom is informed by neurotransmitters in the gut, intestines, spine, heart… [17:30] Burnout is the highest cost of the professional world; your body needs to slow down [19:40] To heal the freeze response, you need to take the time to slow down [24:40] Her doctor did not comment on her lifestyle, but Dircilene felt it had led to her cancer [26:30] The freeze response is the largest driver of your epigenetics (gene expression) [29:55] The autonomic nervous system stores trauma and causes the freeze response pattern [33:00] Excluding the body's experience often leads you to push yourself beyond your limits [36:00] Supporting your body increases your awareness, allowing you to slow down and focus Find More from Dr.Arielle Schwartz Center for Resilience Informed Therapy 21 Day Journey   How do you know if you have trauma? Today on Biology of Trauma, Dr.Arielle Schwartz, Ph.D., joins us to discuss stored trauma in the body and how it inevitably leads to self-sabotage. She is a licensed clinical psychologist and author of 6 books addressing a mind-body approach to overcoming PTSD. She details just how much of your behavior is influenced by unconscious signals perceived by the nervous system and how building awareness of your body heals your mind.    Trauma often pushes you to recoil into yourself emotionally because of childhood conditioning, but it is possible to learn a new way of being. In this episode, Susan Lynn speaks about her experience with the 21-day journey and how it gave her the tools to build awareness of her body and regain control of her life. Like many adults living in the freeze response, Susan felt she was battling between her younger self and her current self. Once she accepted all parts of her personality — even the negative ones — life became manageable, enjoyable, and even hopeful.   Your body is communicating with you — every ache is a message to stop and take the time to understand what your nervous system is alerting you to. With the somatic tools discussed in this episode, you can build awareness and forge new behavioral pathways that align with your current self. You will be amazed at how much you can achieve when you learn to stop self-sabotage.     Key Takeaways: [1:20] Is stored trauma in the body causing self-sabotage? [3:20] The conflict between your current needs and the experiences that govern your behavior  [5:00] Building curiosity around why you feel resistance to your goals [6:00] Self-criticism and how your inner voice often mimics criticism received in childhood [8:30] Accepting the different parts of yourself & the consequence of suppressing them  [10:00] Common self-sabotaging behaviors and how to recognize them [12:00] The energy-draining cycle of exiling your emotions due to childhood conditioning  [14:00] Enhancing your creativity by embracing  your vulnerability and shame  [16:40] Somatic work, polyvagal theory, and the way out of self-sabotage  [19:00] Awareness as a way of life: building resilience, greater tolerance, and increased capacity [21:00] Unconscious signals of safety or danger, sensed by the vagus nerve, influence behavior [28:00] Life beyond self-sabotage and accepting every part of yourself   Find More from Dr. Arielle Schwartz: DrArielleSchwartz.com 21 Day Journey   How do you know if you have trauma? He is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, and Senior Advisor to the USC Adolescent Trauma Training Center. He is recipient of the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Science of Trauma Psychology from the American Psychological Association and the William N. John has been Remote Faculty at the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy since 2013. Resources:   - John explains and teaches the REGAIN technique that he and Tara Brach developed as a trauma focused modification of the RAIN technique taught by Tara Brach & Jack Kornfield. - John shares about his own history of trauma and how common it is for therapists to be trauma survivors. - John compassionately describes the 5 clinical dilemmas that often arise in complex trauma therapy which he calls "Reactive Avoidance" strategies:     - Self Injury    - Dissociation    - Substance Abuse    - Sexualized Behaviors    - Angry/Challenging Behaviors directed toward the therapist - John normalizes these reactions, explaining that the client is not "bad" for acting out, and the therapist is not "bad," for having their own traumatic material arise in response when these dilemmas show up.  - John shares how therapists (and clients) can use the REGAIN technique to get back to center when the Reactive Avoidance strategies show themselves. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! As we welcome the New Year, we are welcoming new perspectives. This week's episode is all about reconsidering what you've always thought about dissociation (if you've thought about it at all!).   This week's guest is Dr. Jamie+ Marich. Jamie/Dr. Jamie uses she/they pronouns, identifying as a bisexual woman in recovery from a substance-related disorder who is part of a dissociative system. She is also an internationally recognized speaker, trainer in EMDR and expressive arts, the author of many books, and a psychotherapist in private practice.  Their newest book, Dissociation Made Simple, includes stories shared by Jamie/Dr. Jamie and 61 contributors, nearly 40 of whom are mental health clinicians living with dissociative disorders. A clinical trauma specialist, expressive artist, writer, yogini, performer, short filmmaker, reiki master, TEDx speaker, and recovery advocate, she unites all of these elements in her mission to inspire healing in others. Jamie is a woman in long-term recovery from an addictive disorder and is living loudly and proudly as a woman with a dissociative disorder with the goal of smashing stigma about dissociation in the mental health field and in society at large.    Jamie+ began her career as a humanitarian aid worker in Bosnia- Herzegovina from 2000–2003, primarily teaching English and music. Jamie travels internationally teaching on topics related to trauma, EMDR Therapy, expressive arts, mindfulness, and yoga, while maintaining a private practice and online education operations in her home base of northeast Ohio. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, continuing our theme of coping with holiday and family stress, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, revisits a recent Therapy Chat episode with frequent guest Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW. Last week Sharon shared strategies to help us feel empowered when interacting with family and during the holidays in general. This week she will teach us why expressing our wants and needs, and naming our boundaries can help us feel in control of our lives as the grown @$$ adults that we are. We can't control everything but do have autonomy and choice as adults. With mindful intention, it is possible to thrive, even during stressful times.    It's common to feel disempowered when we grew up in homes without our emotional needs being met consistently enough. However, as an adult, you have more power than you may be giving yourself credit for. No one can actually take that away from you. By focusing on what is within your control and letting go of what isn't, you can take your power back during the holidays. As we move into the New Year, learning to express your wants and needs and name and hold your boundaries is something that you can learn. Sharon's recommendations shared in this episode can help. Sharon will give some great tips on why it can be hard to set boundaries, why they're important, and how to do it.   Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW is a licensed psychotherapist specializing in codependency recovery with an online practice serving California residents. For the past 20 years, she's been helping perfectionists and people-pleasers overcome self-doubt and shame, embrace their imperfections, learn to set boundaries, and reclaim their self-worth. Laura and Julia share deeply held values around respect for the dignity and autonomy of another being within a relational interaction - whether with another human or a non-human animal. Julia shared how she helps white-bodied therapists identify who are working toward embodied anti-racism, through the influence of teachers including Resmaa Menakem and partnership with Colors of Austin.    Julia provides compassionate therapy, education and consulting services rooted in anti-racist, social justice and liberatory frameworks. She offers a safe and accepting space to alleviate shame, heal trauma and discover inner resilience. Her approach is founded on an unwavering belief in the healing power of safe connection, and a deep knowing that sustained relationship to nature plays a major role in human healing. She specializes in providing eco and equine-assisted psychotherapy in the areas of childhood relationship trauma, coming out, systemic oppression, and shame held by white-bodied people.    As a social justice educator, she offers customized consulting, curriculum design and group facilitation to individuals, teams, and organizations who want to understand their experiences and beliefs in the context of systemic oppression. You will learn: * What intergenerational trauma is and what it can look like in play therapy sessions * How to cultivate your own trans-generational resilience and develop generational empathy (that you can then model to your clients and their parents/caregivers);  * What to do when your own intergenerational trauma shows up in a session with your clients; and * How practicing self-care supports you in being a better steward of trauma for this kind of work (...learn Arielle's own embodiment practice that she starts each day with and before meeting with clients).  Join this lovely conversation and widen your lens beyond the client's present day (or recent history) experience to what might be happening across generations in the parent/caregiver-child relationship, what's happening in the family system, and even to the generational patterns and unresolved traumas generationally that are part of your client's story. *Arielle Schwartz, PhD, CCTP-II, E-RYT, is a licensed clinical psychologist, certified complex trauma professional, and Kripalu yoga teacher with a private practice in Boulder, Colorado. As an internationally sought-out teacher and leading voice in the healing of PTSD and complex trauma, she is the author of six books, including The Complex PTSD Workbook, Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma, and The Post-Traumatic Growth Guidebook. She is dedicated to offering informational mental health and wellness updates through her writing, public speaking, social media presence, and blog. This series covers practices you can do on your own or with a professional. Somatic therapy is based on more recent research and generally more effective than talk therapy for healing trauma. It's basically another name for body work, or connecting with the body's sensations and resources to heal trauma stuck in the body so it can release through your neural network. This may include therapies with a specialist who does body work with you to release trauma or heal the effects of trauma. Part II discusses co-regulation with a therapist, body therapies you can do with a specialist, and breakthrough treatments in trauma recovery that are still in their experimental phases like micro dosing under a special doctor's care, and utilizing new devices for healing trauma. *****THE STORE IS OPEN: https://app.podia.com/products/a-c-o-r-n-meditation-bundleBreakdown of Episode1:45 Introduction and Disclaimer 5:02 The Store is Open!5:54 Intro to the Therapies11:37 Co-Regulation With a Therapist21:19 Chiropractic (Atlas Orthogonal)33:25 Cranial Somatic and Cranial Sacral Therapy37:39 Massage45:18 Acupuncture48:24 Disclaimer on Chemical Substances and Ketamine30:41 Micro-dosing Using Psychedelics103:18 TMS--Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation107:45 VNS--Vagal Nerve StimulationBulleted List of ResourcesConnection and Co-Regulation in Psychotherapy by Arielle Schwartz in Center for Resilience Informed Therapy is the resource used to discuss co-regulation with a therapist.Improvement in Depression Following Reduction of Upper Cervical Subluxation Using Osteospinology Technique by Glenndon Genther, Harris Friedman, and Charles Studley and Chiropractic Adjustment by by the Mayo Clinic are the resources used to discuss the benefits of chiropractic treatment in healing depression and PTSD.-PTSD Could be Treated with Cranialsacral Therapy According to a Research Study in News Medical Life Sciences and Cranial Sacral Therapy in Healthline by Anna Gotter are the sources used to discuss how cranial sacral therapy can help release trauma from the body. Mind-Body-Spirit Interventions for Patients with PTSD by Leslie Corn, PhD, MPH in Psychiatric Times is the source used to explain how mind-body-spirit practices in general, including massage therapy and acupuncture can be used to relieve stress, depression, chronic illness and the symptoms of PTSD.Ketamine as a Rapid Treatment for PTSD by Dennis Charney at Mt. Elisa and I first bonded over our love of Gabor Mate. Yes, it happened like that. I met her during my summer trip to Italy and have kept in touch ever since. I wanted to have her on the podcast to discuss the practice of yoga's potential to calm our nervous system and help us reduce the impact trauma might have on our life. Trauma is a heavy, complicated and multi-faceted concept but amongst top trauma experts in the world such as Bessel Van De Kolk, Gabor Mate, Janina Fisher, and Steven Porges to name a few; trauma is something pretty much every human deals with both physically and mentally on some level. In this podcast, we talk a bit about trauma but really, we need a whole series of podcasts to unpack trauma and so we hope that this podcast opened you up to a new understanding of trauma and how often trauma lies in the body. Trauma-informed yoga is a practice designed to facilitate more options and possibilities for those in a yoga class, which is something as Elisa points out traumatised people have rarely had in their life, or at least that's how their nervous system and body perceives it. This was one of the most challenging podcasts I've been a part of because of its intricate nature but I really enjoyed it and I hope you take something from it. One of my biggest unlearnings has been understanding what trauma is. Being able to see my experiences through that lens has been invaluable in better navigating the world. Today's guest, Mira Rao, is an embodiment and resilience coach. In this episode, we dive into how she defines trauma, embodiment and resilience - words that are often taken in without an understanding of what they truly are.  We touch on the mechanistic culture we live in, the importance of in person connection, belonging and safety. I walked away from this conversation with a new understanding of what has shaped me. I think you might too. People mentioned: Arielle Schwartz, PhD. - Child and adult psychotherapist specializing in EMDR and body-centered trauma therapies Dr. Candace Pert - a neuroscientist and pharmacologist who contributed to “mind-body” medicine as an area of legitimate scientific research and author of Molecules Of Emotion: The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine   About the guest Mira Rao (she/her) is an embodiment and resilience coach. She is on a mission to contribute to building a world in which people are confident in the wisdom of their bodies, consciously and intentionally resilient with the ups and downs of life and empowered to live the lives they actively choose rather than reactively inherit. She does so by teaching them practical ways to develop routines and rituals for embodied resilience that help them deal better with challenges and stress so they can start moving towards what they truly want in their lives. Today, I'm thrilled to be joined once again by Dr. Clare Marriott. Clare is a Clinical Psychologist working in the U.K. In 2006, Clare completed her doctoral thesis, investigating factors promoting resilience in adults who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. Clare focuses her work on recovery, and in finding things that sustain people outside of the therapy room. During her time as a Clinical Psychologist, Clare has worked with people with chronic mental health challenges and is currently Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Interim Clinical Lead for the Recovery Pathway in Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust in the UK.Clare first joined us in Season One of Overcoming Child Sexual Abuse, and we both realized there was an important conversation to be shared on Recovery Fatigue—how we keep on our path to all we want for our lives without feeling exhausted and so tired along the way that we give up, or lose hope. Our path is here for us to experience all the happiness and meaning we desire, so today, we're going to talk about how to move through recovery fatigue, and share some learning and practices to help us keep overcoming our childhood trauma and move forward with energy, motivation, and the power of our unlimited possibilities.

Today, I'm thrilled to be joined by Dr. Arielle Schwartz, PhD. Dr. Schwartz encourages us, “You are not broken, in need of fixing. Rather, you are deeply hurt, in need of care.” As a practicing clinical psychologist, Dr. Schwartz helps people navigate the difficult challenges we have in our lives by focusing on the whole person – mind and body - to help recover from traumatic events, find relief from depression or anxiety, develop and keep meaningful and nurturing relationships, and break free from destructive habits that can derail our lives.Dr. Schwartz is the developer of Resilience-Informed Therapy - a strengths-based, mind and body trauma treatment model that applies research on resilience to form a positive and “whole person” approach to trauma recovery that includes Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (known as EMDR), somatic (or body-centered) psychology, internal parts work, and mind-body-based approaches (including therapeutic yoga and mindfulness practices).Dr. Schwartz holds a  Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, and a Master's degree in Somatic Psychology, as well as a Bachelors degree in in Psychology. She is a trainer for therapists internationally and specializes in PTSD, Complex PTSD, Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma, Resilience, and Post Traumatic Growth. Dr. Schwartz's books include: The Post-Traumatic Growth Guidebook, Trauma Recovery: A Mind-Body Approach to Becoming Whole, The Complex PTSD Workbook, and EMDR Therapy & Somatic Psychology, among others. When Dr. Schwartz is not working she loves being a mom and exploring the trails of nature.

Hello friends and welcome to Episode Three: Peace Amidst Chaos. How the hell is everyone doing out there?!  Life for me the past week or so has been...quite interesting to say the least.  Weird, chaotic, stressful, beautiful, ridiculous, you name it, I felt it. December definitely hasn't been for the faint of heart and we are in this very chaotic, high energy window. There's a definite astrological flavor to this episode as I discuss the Saturn Uranus square we've all been experiencing for the entirety of 2021. I discuss a bit about our nervous systems, and how the way in which we react to stress in our present lives goes all the way back to childhood, yay! I go into detail about the technique of structuring as a means to reprogram our brains to more empowered 'memories' in order to come to a more grounded state of being. I also offer up a meditation I created to calibrate your chakra system to the frequency of peace. I developed it this past Summer to help chill me the fuck out and I in turn, want to help you chill the fuck out as well. Enjoy!    Today, we're joined by the wonderful Dr. Lindsay Gibson. Dr. Gibson dramatically and importantly spotlights how the “emotional immaturity” of parents can hinder and hold us back in our adulthood, and how we can regain trust in ourselves and break free from the destructive and confusing effects of negative “programming” from childhood.    In her book, Who You Were Meant To Be, Dr. Gibson focuses on how people can reconnect with their true self and sense of purpose, especially after experiencing negative parental impacts in childhood. In her subsequent books, Dr. Gibson introduces “Emotionally Immature Parents” and provides learning and tools to overcome the impacts of these parents, and how to rely on our own emotional guidance, strengthen our self-awareness, and increase our energy to live a full, happy, and purposeful life in adulthood.   Dr. Gibson holds a Master's degree and a Doctorate of Psychology in Clinical Psychology, and has also taught doctoral students in Clinical Psychology. She specializes in adult psychotherapy and personal growth counseling.    As Dr. Gibson highlights, “Your true self is so much more than your family role. Your past identity may have been formed in your relationship with your parents, but who you will become derives from your relationship to yourself.”    We went a bit longer on this podcast because you can imagine there was a quite a lot to talk about – so if you need to break up your listening, please do – because there's great insights through until the very end!

Today I am looking at endings and beginnings, like everyone else, I am sharing my resolutions for the new year, although I don't call them resolutions, I call them priorities, because that is what resolutions are. We've all been waiting for this day to arrive and it is just like 2020 to go and fuck our New Year's Eve celebrations. What has the world become. Anyway, for people with PTSD or C-PTSD this time of year usually brings about a lot of anxiety. We know, from experience, that the new year will probably just like the old year. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! As a follow up to last week's episode with Dr. Arielle Schwartz, we're revisiting a previous conversation with her from 2021. In our conversation, you'll hear Arielle talk about how adverse experiences from childhood can show up in our adult lives. She explains why it's hard for us to reconcile the moments when our parents didn't meet our needs back then to our perception of them and ourselves as adults. You'll hear HOW dissociation protects us and helps us create fantasies about our family relationships which make them feel safer and more trustworthy than they felt to us during childhood. She describes why this is needed and how resilience-focused somatic therapies can help us come out of a "functional freeze" state to be present in the here and now, with autonomy and agency. This conversation is all about understanding why we need the adaptive skill of dissociation and challenges the stigma about dissociation, trauma and mental health that is common in popular culture.Arielle Schwartz, PhD, is a psychologist, internationally sought-out teacher, yoga instructor, and leading voice in the healing of PTSD and complex trauma. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we welcome back a previous guest, Dr. Arielle Schwartz.to talk about applied Polyvagal Theory and how it helps us connect to a sense of resilience within our bodies. This episode is like a mini-course in how somatic embodiment affects our access to our inner "yes" and "no." Past traumatic experiences and attachment wounds can prevent us from being connected to our own wisdom from within, but we can reconnect to an empowered sense of agency and autonomy where we can move, breathe and be present to our pain without being swallowed by it. Arielle's teachings provide therapists with the tools to live resiliently while we do our work and to support our clients in doing the same. Arielle Schwartz, PhD, is a psychologist, internationally sought-out teacher, yoga instructor, and leading voice in the healing of PTSD and complex trauma. She is the author of many books, including The Complex PTSD Workbook, EMDR Therapy and Somatic Psychology, The Post Traumatic Growth Guidebook. and Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery, as well as her newest publication, the Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery Flip Chart, which can be used by clinicians and anyone who wants to learn these skills. Dr. Schwartz is an accomplished teacher who guides therapists in the application of EMDR, somatic psychology, parts work therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions for the treatment of trauma and complex PTSD. She has a depth of understanding, passion, kindness, compassion, joy, and a succinct way of speaking about very complex topics. She is the founder of the Center for Resilience Informed Therapy in Boulder, Colorado where she maintains a private practice providing psychotherapy, supervision, and consultation. With over twenty years as a therapeutic yoga teacher, Dr. Schwartz believes that the journey of trauma recovery is an awakening of the spiritual heart. Find Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery Flip Chart on Amazon here.Find the accompanying book, Therapeutic Yoga for Trauma Recovery, on Amazon here.Listen to Dr. Arielle Schwartz's previous Therapy Chat interview here!Save 20% on a Virtual Ticket for the Master Series Oxford here!
