Joining us from the officiating community were two officials who worked alongside Emry and have known him for decades: Ron Snodgrass and Craig Kelley. From the athletic administrative perspective, we welcomed Becky Oakes, former Executive Director of the Missouri State High School Activities Association and the National Federation of State High School Associations. And representing what was undoubtedly his most cherished role—that of father—we welcomed his wonderful daughter, Missy Facklam. RHONDA FARNEY—Coach Farney has the most career victories of any active girls' coach in Texas and the nation with a record of 1,283 victories and 371 losses (.770 winning percentage) and sixth on the all-time career list as compiled by the National Federation of State High School Associations. She has been a high school head coach for 49 seasons. In 36 years at Georgetown High School, her teams have posted 36-consecutive 20-win seasons and 35-straight berths in the UIL state playoffs, including seven appearances in the state tournament—highlighted by a Class 4A state title during the 2012-2013 season that was climaxed by a come-from-behind 65-60 victory over Dallas Lincoln in the finals to finish with a 34-4 record. She has had more than 86 players compete on the collegiate level, however; her most prized accomplishment is helping over 64 former players to enter the coaching profession. The Howard Payne summa cum laude graduate—still as a teenager—also has served as the head coach at Goldthwaite and Ozona. She was the only girls' basketball coach on the Goldthwaite staff and coached the seventh, eighth, junior varsity and varsity. Farney also coached track at both schools. Farney has earned numerous coaching honors, including receiving the prestigious John Wooden Legacy Award presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches in March 2022. In addition, she was honored as the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Pat Summitt National High School Coach of the Year in 2017 and the National Federation of High Schools 2013 National Coach of the Year as well as being inducted into the Howard Payne University Hall of Fame, Texas Basketball Hall of Fame, and the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Recently, she was named the Texas High School Coaches Association Female State Coach of the Year for 2022 and was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Omaha, Nebraska, in July 2023. Also on the national scene, Farney has chaired the USA Basketball Cadet and Youth Committee, helping select players and coaches for the Summer Youth Development Olympic Festival. In summer 2001, she was one of two high school coaches named by the USA Basketball Women's Collegiate Committee to serve as floor coach for the USA Basketball Women's Junior National Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was assistant coach for the 2005 USA Basketball Women's Youth Development Olympic Festival, where her team won the gold medal. Farney was named head coach for the April 2003 WBCA/Nike All-American game in Hartford, Connecticut. Previously, in April 1996, she traveled to Philadelphia as assistant coach for the WBCA/Nike All-American game. Farney served four years on the WBCA and NFCA Board of Directors and completed a term on the NFCA Basketball Rules Committee. In addition, she was the first female to serve as the president for the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Association, the largest male and female basketball organization in the nation as well as serving as president of the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Coach Farney also holds the position of girls' athletics coordinator at Georgetown and is married to Dr. Bill Farney, retired executive director of the University Interscholastic League, the ruling body of extra-curricular activities in Texas. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/kevin-furtado/support

Competitive debate veteran and veteran debate coach James Fishback joins Tim to talk about free speech, and at times the lack of certain kinds of debate in high school debate. James founded an organization called Incubate Debate in 2019 after serving as a volunteer debate coach in Miami-Dade county for two-years. Prior to that, he competed in high school debate for four-years in Broward County. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Hijacking_High_School_Debate_auphonic.mp3 James Fishback started Incubate Debate, with the goal of making debate accessible to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds and political beliefs. Over the past four years, James says Incubate Debate has helped thousands of students from all over Florida through its tournaments, workshops, and camps, all at no cost. But what caught our attention was some publicity James received when he spoke out on the issue of free speech and high school debate. According to James, there are some points you're just not allowed to make as a high school debater. But before we get into that, I wanted to find out more about James' own experience with high school debate and how it's supposed to be. Links Incubate Debate At High School Debates, Debate is No Longer Allowed, The Free Press National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) NSDA Statement on Its Policies (Link to Google Docs) About this Episode's Guest James Fishback James Fishback founded Incubate Debate in 2019 after serving as a volunteer debate coach in Miami-Dade county for two-years and competing in high school debate for four-years in Broward County. Both were incredible and eye-opening experiences, but ones in which he recognized tremendous issues that prevented many students from participating in and reaping the benefits of debate. In 2019, he started Incubate Debate, with the goal of making debate accessible to students of all socioeconomic backgrounds and political beliefs. Over the past four years, Incubate has welcomed thousands of students from all over Florida to its tournaments, workshops, and camps, all at no cost. Incubate is built on the principle of making debate easy to learn, hard to master. Through our proprietary debate formats (TownHall, Roundtable, Tribunal), Incubate is easy to learn: students get a basic understanding of the rules and processes fast, but it is hard to master because it demands a high level of skill, knowledge, and practice to be successful. Mastering Incubate's challenging, yet accessible style of debate requires dedication and a willingness to continually strive for improvement. NSDA Statement The following is the Editor's Note from The Free Press Article mentioned in the episode and linked-to above: "One day after this story published, the NSDA released a statement on Twitter, stating in part: 'Our judge training materials in partnership with the National Federation of State High School Associations provide best practices for adjudicating speech and debate, such as "Judges should decide the round as it is debated, not based on their personal beliefs."...Tabroom.com is a project of the National Speech & Debate Association, and its purpose is to provide a tournament management system for debate and speech tournaments worldwide. The 47,000 judge paradigms housed therein represent the opinions and viewpoints of the individual paradigm authors. Schools or other organizations that use Tabroom.com to hire judges are free to evaluate those paradigms before engaging their services.'"

He became the first White Sox player to homer in four straight games since Matt Davidson in 2017. Sheets’ three-run shot and Burger’s two-run drive were among six straight hits by the White Sox with two outs in the fifth as Chicago jumped ahead 6-0. The Nuggets led by as many as 21 points before the Lakers made a late push before falling short of winning an opener on the road for the third time in these playoffs. Anthony Davis scored 40 points for the Lakers and LeBron James came up one assist shy of a triple double to go with his 26 points and 12 rebounds. Last Night Eastern Conference Finals Miami Heat at Boston Celtics, 8:30 p.m. (Game 1) NBA – The Wembanyama sweepstakes and draft lottery has a winner: It’s the Spurs Victor Wembanyama is now set to begin his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs, after they won the NBA draft lottery and the No. 1 overall pick on Tuesday night. The Spurs were one of three teams with the best odds — 14% — to land the No. 1 pick, which they’ll almost certainly use on Wembanyama. The 7-foot-3 French 19-year-old is one of the most highly touted prospects in NBA history and will be expected to make an immediate impact on the league. Detroit had the worst record in the NBA and was one of the three teams with the best odds of winning. The Pistons wound up falling all the way to fifth, the worst of their possible outcomes. Indiana has the 7th pick and the Bulls pick at 11 was traded to Orlando in the deal for Nikola Vucevic. WNBA – WNBA suspends Hammon 2 games for player’s allegation she was bullied The WNBA has suspended Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon, one of the league’s marquee figures, for two games after former Aces player Dearica Hamby said she had been bullied and manipulated for being pregnant. Hammon, who in her first season last year led the Aces to the WNBA championship, was suspended without pay Tuesday after a monthslong investigation. The league also rescinded the Aces’ first-round pick in the 2025 draft for a different issue — a violation of league rules regarding impermissible player benefits involving Hamby. Hammon and the Aces have not responded to requests for comment. NHL – Arizona Coyotes’ bid for new arena appears to be rejected by voters The Arizona Coyotes’ bid for a new arena appears to be dead. In the first release of results from Tuesday’s referendum, voters in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe were strongly against three propositions to build a $2.3 billion entertainment district that would include a new arena for the Coyotes. Opposition to the three propositions had a double-digit lead over those in favor, with only ballots dropped off Tuesday left to count. The Coyotes had hoped a new arena in Tempe would finally allow the franchise to settle down after playing in three different venues since moving to Arizona. Now it appears the franchise has to search for a new home again. NFL – ESPN announces ‘Pat McAfee Show’ will join afternoon lineup Pat McAfee’s show is moving to ESPN as part of a new multiyear deal. McAfee first joined ESPN as a college football analyst for its Thursday night games in 2019. He returned to the network last year and became part of the “College GameDay” crew as well as hosting some alternate presentations of ESPN games, including the CFP National Championship. That will continue, but it is McAfee’s show that has created the most buzz. ESPN also announced a documentary series on Serena Williams and four major matchups for the upcoming college football season. NFL – Peacock will exclusively carry NFL playoff game in a first for streaming service The NFL is taking another big step into streaming by putting one of its playoff games exclusively on a digital platform for the first time. The league and NBCUniversal announced that the Saturday night game on Wild Card weekend will be on Peacock. It will be preceded by a late afternoon playoff game on NBC and Peacock that will kick off at 4:30 p.m. EST. The Peacock game will also be broadcast on NBC stations in the markets of the two teams. Subscription rates for Peacock start at $4.99 per month. Soccer – CTE cases in soccer players raise fresh questions about safety of heading the ball Four more former professional soccer players have been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The Concussion Legacy Foundation says the North American Soccer League veterans were found to have the degenerative brain disease that has been linked to concussions in athletes, combat veterans and others who have sustained repeated head trauma. English star Jimmy Fryatt was one of them. He was considered one of the best at heading the ball. Researchers say the practice is dangerous and should be phased out, especially for children. The new diagnoses come as soccer officials gather in Chicago for a Head Injury Summit. Some of the ex-players’ families say hearing from those who suffered from the disease is a key to preventing and treating it. High school basketball teams now will shoot two free throws for common fouls when in the “bonus” instead of having to make the first free throw to get a second after seven fouls. Rules changes for next school year were approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations’ basketball rules committee, then by its board of directors. In addition to awarding two foul shots for all common fouls, teams will reach the bonus when their opponent commits five fouls in each quarter and team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter. Lance Lynn allowed three runs — one earned — on seven hits in seven innings. Robert’s solo shot to deep left in the eighth was his AL-leading 12th homer of the season. Earlier this month, the Oregon School Activities Association unanimously voted in favor of making girls wrestling an official high school sport starting in the fall. The move is intended to boost equity for girls wrestling programs in Oregon by improving access to training facilities and coaching staff, and by separately scheduling competitions for girls and boys matches. Since the 2018-2019 wrestling season, the OSAA has awarded state championship titles for girls wrestling matches, which previously were held as exhibition tournaments.According to a proposal submitted by school athletic officials to the OSAA in January, there are more than 1,100 athletes competing in girls wrestling programs in Oregon high schools, a 25 percent increase from the previous year. Nationwide, participation in the sport increased by 50 percent in just four years, according to a 2021-2022 survey conducted by the National Federation of State High School Associations.Joining us to talk about girls wrestling in Oregon are Sarahi Chavez, a sophomore and member of the girls wrestling team at McKay High School in Salem; Jessica Lister, the head coach of the girls wrestling team at Hood River Valley High School and a three-time All-American wrestler; and Trent Kroll, the athletic director of Hood River Valley High School who successfully petitioned the OSAA to change the status of girls wrestling.

When COVID-19 caused schools to keep students of all grades at home, those arguably most disadvantaged by this were musicians. Many barriers stood in the way of getting students back in the music room: aerosolization from instruments and voice, close proximity between students, secretions from brass instruments, and antiquated ventilation systems in thousands of school buildings. Early projections indicated that musicians would not get back in the room for 2 YEARS! Well, that didn't happen, and our guests are a huge reason why. Steven and Yasi talk to Dr. Mark Spede, Director of Bands and Conductor of the Symphonic Band at Clemson University, and Dr. James Weaver, Director of Performing Arts and Sports for the National Federation of State High School Associations. These two gentlemen collaborated on expedient and collaborative research that helped crack the code on how to play music in a post-pandemic school environment. UPMC Sports medicine physician Dr. Jeanne Doperak joins Tim to talk about how athletes of all ages can get back to playing sports again in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She's one of the people behind the new UPMC Youth Sports Playbook designed to help get young athletes back to competition. In this episode, Dr. Doperak details the thinking behind that playbook, and how to get your young athlete back into sports with confidence, with the right approach and the right mindset. https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/shapingopinion/UPMC_Get_Back_to_Play_auphonic.mp3 In 2015, the Aspen Institute published a report on youth sports. They looked at youth sports participation among boys and girls from 6 to 12 years old. They found that across the country, roughly 5.5 million kids participate in organized basketball leagues. 5 million play in soccer leagues. 731,000 participate in track and field. 4.5 million kids play in baseball leagues. 1.3 million kids play organized football. And 862,000 kids play in softball leagues. The National Federation of State High School Associations, reports that roughly 8 million teenagers compete in high school sports. And the NCAA reports that 460,000 men and women compete in NCAA collegiate sports. That's a total of 26.4 million young athletes in the United States. That's 26.4 million young athletes who had to stop training, practicing and competing a few months ago when the COVID-19 pandemic changed life in America as we know it. Photo by Ye Fang Kuang via Flickr Competitive video gaming may be coming soon to a school near you. E-sports (short for "electronic sports") is a $900 million dollar global industry. In South Korea, top video game players are household names, and matches are televised. Here in the United States, more than 80 colleges and universities, including Kent State and the University of California - Berkeley, now offer esports scholarships. High schools are getting in on the action too. In October 2018, the National Federation of State High School Associations -- the same organization that promotes interscholastic sports and performing arts activities -- launches its first-ever eSports season; six different states hosted their first-ever state video game championships in January 2019. In February, another season of high school esports kicks off, with three additional states joining in on the fun. To many parents and grandparents, the idea of video games as a sport sounds, well, ridiculous. But coaches and players say that esports have a lot more in common with football, basketball and soccer than you may think. The real benefit of school sports, most people know, is that they teach teamwork, discipline and camaraderie. Few high school football players will go on to play football after high school, but the lessons learned on the field linger. So do the relationships players develop with their coaches and teammates. The same holds true for competitive video gamers. Like other athletes, they must learn how to communicate effectively and how to best use the strengths of each person on the team. They must learn how to control their emotions and assess and respond to an ever-changing environment. They gain a sense of pride and connection. In fact, there a lot of good reasons to say yes to esports: Kids thrive when they connect with other kids who share their passions Esports teams are under the supervision of a coach during practices and meets (rather than spending dozens of unsupervised hours playing video games) Esports fall under school athletic policies, so competitors must meet academic eligibility requirements and adhere to behavioral standards Anyone can compete in eSports. Size and strength aren't a plus or a minus, and mixed gender teams are common. (Check out this awesome Microsoft commercial, which illustrates how adaptive controllers break down barriers by allowing kids of all abilities to play together.) Most schools already have the equipment necessary to participate in eSports There's almost no travel involved (especially when compared to other sports!) In this episode, Janet & Jen discuss: What esports are How -- and why -- esports can benefit video game-loving boys, especially non-athletic boys who don't feel connected to school What parents & teachers need to know about esports & competitive video gaming The similarities between esports & traditional sports What kids can learn from esports Links we mentioned (or should have) in Episode 149: Video Games are the New Competitive Sport in Schools -- Jen's article about esports Griffin's Chovy on His Ridiculous KDA of 104 & The Strength of His Team -- ESPN article (yes, an ESPN article!) about a competitive League of Legends player Which Schools Offer eSports Scholarships How to Start a High School Esports League & Benefit Your Got a competitive gamer in your life? The Moeller football program was certainly in the spotlight this week. Doug Rosfeld, the GCL South coach of the year, made significant headlines Monday morning after he decided to leave the Crusaders to become the Cincinnati Bengals’ director of coaching operations. On Monday morning, the school lauded Rosfeld, a 1997 graduate, while moving forward on a bittersweet day. Moeller named Todd Naumann as the acting head coach while the school conducts a national search to replace Rosfeld. Moeller Athletic Director Mike Asbeck said Naumann was a candidate though there was no timeline on naming the new coach. Naumann joins the WCPO High School Insider Podcast to discuss his duties this week and the message to the team during this transition. WCPO’s Mike Dyer and Keenan Singleton along with TriStateFootball.com’s Greg Shoemaker also discuss the news that the National Federation of State High School Associations will permit the use of instant replay during state football playoff games this upcoming season.

Bob Gardner has been the executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations since May of 2010. He will be retiring from this position in August of 2018 after nearly 50 years of serving in secondary education. Gardner was only the fifth full-time executive director for the NFHS since 1940. During his 18 years on the NFHS staff in Indianapolis, participation in high school sports has increased by almost 400,000, including the expanded opportunity for students with disabilities in high school sports. Gardner has led the organization’s focus on risk minimization in high school sports, with particular emphasis on concussion awareness, and has brought a heightened national presence to the work of the NFHS and its member state associations. In addition to the continual expansion of the NFHS Learning Center during his tenure, Gardner is credited with starting the NFHS Network, the first-of-its-kind digital coverage of high school sports with more than 25,000 events covered during the 2016-17 school year. He spent his career in Indiana as a teacher and coach at three schools for eight years and as an athletic director. In 1978, Gardner became principal of Milan Junior-Senior High School, followed by a stint as superintendent of the Milan Community Schools. After serving on the Indiana High School Athletic Association board of directors during his time at Milan, Gardner joined the IHSAA staff in 1985 as assistant commissioner. He served 10 years in that role prior to becoming commissioner in 1995. Gardner joined the NFHS staff in 2000 as chief operating officer and served in that position for 10 years prior to becoming executive director. During this time, he chaired the NFHS Rules Review Committee and was responsible for day-to-day operations of the organization. He has served on the board of directors for USA Football, USA Basketball and the Indiana Sports Corp. He is a member of the Indiana High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. It's the last episode of Skillset’s Season Two, our masterclass on high school movies. But I can’t throw my graduation cap before I get to talk about three of my all-time favorite flicks. First up, Bring it On introduced us to the crazy world of high school competitive cheerleading. But it turns out some of those insane moves -- okay, a lot of them -- aren’t technically legal. So how real is Bring it On? We ask Susie Knoblauch of the National Federation of State High School Associations who oversees cheer battles to separate the truth from the tinsel. Then, we talk about the most famous prom dress in movie history. Hint: It’s pink. It’s covered in blood. It’s Carrie’s, and costume designer Luis Sequera had the tough job of updating the iconic gown when Hollywood remade Carrie 37 years after the original. That’s several lifetimes in teenage trends. And finally, let’s go to Harry Potter’s Hogwarts where the class subjects are fiction, but the teaching styles are all too real. There’s good teachers and bad teachers, boring classes and classes that should be interesting but somehow still wind up boring because the teacher doesn’t care. Dr. Melissa Johnson of Virginia Commonwealth University studied their teaching styles and discovered who is the worst teacher at Hogwarts -- and it isn't because they tried to kill their students. Skillset will be back in early spring with our third season and a new theme. We’ll be traveling around the world in eight episodes, so subscribe to the show on your favorite podcatcher and join us for a new adventure and a new batch of experts.
