In this episode of The Paul Taylor Podcast, I sit down with Steve Biddulph, an extraordinary author and psychologist, to unravel the complex landscape of modern mental health, parenting, and brain science. We look into the challenges facing today's families—exploring how social media transforms teenage experiences, why our brains respond differently to emotions, and how intentional practices like breathing can revolutionise our mental wellbeing. From understanding the intricate workings of our brain's hemispheres to challenging our approach to emotional processing, this conversation offers a groundbreaking perspective on navigating the psychological complexities of the digital age. If you're a parent, a professional, or simply someone seeking to understand the human mind's remarkable intricacies, this episode is packed with transformative insights that will change how you think about mental health, emotional resilience, and human connection. There's a reason so many people struggle with anxiety, stress, knowing our boundaries and questioning our worth. We've lost touch with the animal part of our mind says Australian author, psychologist, and family therapist Steve Biddulph. He's best known for his work on parenting and raising boys. Biddulph says the latest neuroscience shows how important it is to listen to our big ugly feelings in order to deal with them. His new book, which he says will be his last is called Wild Creature Mind: The Neuroscience Breakthrough that Helps You Transform Anxiety and Live a Fierce and Loving Life.
Did you know that according to some psychologists we have two minds, not one? The first of these is our regular, analytical mind – the part of us that processes language and is home to our ego – and the second is a more primitive, animal mind that responds to our environment in a more automatic, intuitive way. It is argued that learning how to listen more closely to our animal minds can help us to overcome stress, anxiety and trauma. In this episode, we catch up with psychologist and author Steve Biddulph to talk about his latest book Wild Creature Mind. He tells how our ‘gut feelings' are a way of our animal minds trying to tell us something, talks us through some simple techniques we can use to help us be more in touch with our animal minds, and explains how simply being a bit kinder to ourselves is a great place to start. Touch And Violence“In the 1960s, anthropologist James Prescott carried out a very large scale study of child rearing and violence across different societies. He foun dthat those societies which gave less touching and affection to young children, had by far the most violence amongst adults."It's clear that the more tender and warm are the lives of children, the safer and more loving they will be as adults.” Steve Biddulph, Raising BoysIn the UK at the moment there is a lot of violence on the streets.I read the above quote today and thought that I would share a few ideas about why this violence might be happening.Could it have anything to do how we bring our children up?Could it be that so many of the leaders in the UK in medicine, and politics used to talk about the need for less touch? “We drastically misuse our mind and have neglected a very important part of the way our mind works in the modern world. I think preindustrial people and our ancestors used this very well. And that is that we have a whole right hemisphere of our brain which doesn't think in words, which takes in the holistic picture of everything around us. Anyone who is listening to this podcast will be aware that sometimes you have got feelings about things. They are signals that are sent from the right hemisphere of the brain, picking up things that we can't consciously interpret or read. It goes through our amygdala, which is our alarm system, and straight down the vagus nerve, and we feel it down in the middle of our body. Have you ever had that dream where you are trying to get somewhere, but as you make your way, the destination moves further and further away? When I have that dream, it feels like I'm in a long and narrowing tunnel. As I try to move towards my goal, the space around me stretches out further ahead, taking my destination with it — like an alternate reality or special effect in a movie. Time and space appear to be pulled away from me, like taffy or a rubber band that surrenders its elasticity and doesn't bounce back. It's as if stepping towards where I want to go creates the expansion and separation from my goal. What does the dream mean? The usual interpretation is that I'm stuck. And that would not be wrong, but it's not the whole picture. Listen to the episode to find out why I am taking a complete break from actively publishing any new content (articles and podcast) for 5-weeks from August 1st until (ironically) Labour Day, September 6th, 2021.Read the post on Think Queerly on Medium.P.S. I loved sitting down with former editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, Elle and Sunday Times Style, Lorraine Candy, to talk all about consciously raising teenagers ahead of her book release - "Mum, What's Wrong With you? 101 Things Only The Mothers of Teenage Girls Know". We discussed what is biologically happening with teenagers, how best to approach raising them and why we've been doing it all wrong. From there we touched on parenting models and why simply listening to our children is the best thing we can do for them. We also spoke about navigating mid-life; menopause, changing bodies, erratic emotions and how to navigate a marriage or relationship in that time. This episode will hold power for so many women, and even if you're not yet at “mid-life”, the tips ahead of your journey there, will really help. Lorraine's book, "Mum, What's Wrong With you? 101 Things Only The Mothers of Teenage Girls Know", is out now! Maggie talks with Steve Biddulph — one of Australia's foremost experts on raising girls — about how parents can lead their daughters through childhood and the tumultuous teens to become strong, empowered, kind and self-assured women. No topic is left untouched: the pressure to be sexy in the age of social media; the big increase in anxiety among girls; the importance of dads and strong female role models; and how the internet has changed everything for girls from friendships to foreplay.
