Women's professional sports are "having a moment", but this did not happen in a vacuum nor did it happen overnight. In a highly anticipated episode (for us), we finally got a chance to sit down with Claire Knapp (CEO of Havas Lynx) and Denise Melone (Managing Director of Havas Life San Francisco) to discuss the implications of the growth of women's sports, both as a business and as an opportunity. Both of these female leaders are accomplished athletes, and we discuss the role of things like teamwork, coaching, and mental fortitude, learned on the judo mats and tennis courts, in their successes as corporate leaders at Havas. The growing interest in the competitive aspects of women's sports has coincided with the appearance of women in a variety of hitherto-denied spaces, such as the boardroom, the judging panel, and even just full-court basketball (looking at you, Sue Atkins--my mom). While this shift is notable, both Claire and Denise express the sentiment that disparities in treatment, compensation and conversation are still as important as ever to address and overcome. What's important is how we talk about women, not as bodies but as humans, and, in the case for this episode, as fierce, aggressive, badass athletes. If you have any questions, feedback, or just want to say hi, email us at medicalanthropology@havas.comCheck out Breaking the Code on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/breaking-the-code-havas-health-and-you-podcast

It's a Family Matters episode so Eddie, Captain Dave and parenting and families expert, Sue Atkins discuss resources for dealing with conflict at home and in school. Disagreements between partners, parents and children in a family is normal and natural but it's HOW we handle conflict and disagreements that's important! Sometimes you can sort disagreements and flash points out quickly. At other times, it can be hard work finding solutions. Conflict can range from disagreements that you can't sort out & can be strong verbal arguments to physical fights. Conflict can also be uncomfortable silence, anger, and hostility. Conflict happens. The important thing is how you handle it. When we ‘talk and teach' our kids about being kind, speaking with respect despite our differences, and working as a family ‘team' everyone is likely to feel more positive, happy, and supported. When your children see you working together on resolving your conflict with your partner it helps them learn valuable life skills like how to negotiate and solve problems effectively for themselves. It can also be comforting for your children to see you being optimistic about working out your differences in a respectful way Children are looking, learning watching and listening to us as parents ALL the time so model the behaviour you want to see in your children as they will copy you. Catch them doing something RIGHT and praise them – that really makes them feel good & their behaviour really improves! We hear from Professor Anita Hill who thirty years ago faced an all-male, all-white Senate Judiciary Committee—led by the then, Senator Joe Biden—to testify that her boss, Supreme Court Justice nominee Clarence Thomas, had sexually harassed her. It was a landmark moment for these issues and inspired countless women to come forward with their stories, to file complaints, and even to run for office; creating an unintentional trail blazer. Now an advocate, educator and author she talks to Emma Barnett about her new book Believing: Our Thirty-Year Journey to End Gender Violence. Research suggests that talking to people we don't know can be good for us. Why don't we do it more often? How has the pandemic impacted our desire to talk to people we don't know? Dr Gillian Sandstrom, senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex, tells us the benefits of making small talk and gives us some tips on how to do it. How can we best discuss the issues of safety without making girls and young women terrified to leave the house? I am joined now by parenting expert, Sue Atkins and Lorraine Candy - mother of three daughters and author of 'Mum, What's Wrong with You?': 101 Things Only Mothers of Teenage Girls Know. Plus ahead tonight's 2021 Gramophones, Awards, the classical music version of the Grammys which will be streaming live this evening we talk to Fatma Said. Are you anxious about how your children are going to emerge from this period of lockdown? Do you worry about gaps in their education? Are you concerned about the loss of social interaction, especially for young children just learning social skills and teenagers who are so dependent on peer interaction? Or do you see this as a period of difficulty from which your children can emerge stronger and more resilient? Sue Atkins is a parenting coach and author with a background in teaching and she is a mum of two adult children. She has many ideas about how to encourage resilience in children. Special Guest: Sue Atkins Each one of us, as a parent, teacher, coach or mentor wants to help raise and inspire kids who are happy, well-adjusted, confident and resilient. But, in today's world, it's not always easy! The messages we receive as parents and educators can get confusing and don't always know the right thing to do. We hear; “make sure to encourage your child—but don't give too much praise or it will backfire!” “Let your child fail—but balance it with pointing out strengths and successes—and for goodness sake don't tie in achievement with self esteem!” “Give your child responsibilities—but don't forget to allow them to have free time and play too!” So much to balance. So much to remember. And still, of course, we all have our bad days when we throw up our hands and wonder if we are getting any of it right. Who hasn't been there? So to discuss and tease through how we can raise happy, confident, resilient kids- we have Sue Atkins on the show today The post How to Raise Happy, Confident, Resilient Kids with Sue Atkins appeared first on drrobynsilverman.com.
