How Do You Trust Yourself When You're Not Seeing Results

Hey Soulful Biz Babes! Today I was journaling, which I do pretty much every morning. I like to journal out what's bothering me, what's on my mind, what ideas I have, and one question that came up for me over and over and over is, “How do you trust yourself when nothing seems to be going right?” I've had numerous conversations with clients over the years and they say, “I'm doing all these things and nothing seems to be working. I'm doing exactly what you told me and nothing seems to be working.” And yeah, I've had those conversations with my coaches where I've done exactly what they've asked, I feel like I'm doing all the things, and I'm not getting the results that I had hoped for, and I'm not getting the results that I had anticipated. This even goes for my brick and mortar business. You know, I had a mentor at one time who would do all the things that everyone else was doing and seemingly having great success. And it just didn't work for me. And the thing is, how do you keep trusting yourself, how do you keep trusting your coach or how do you keep trusting your gut when nothing seems to be working the way that you had hoped? So I think this is a valid question, and maybe there's a reason that this was brought up for me to talk about today because there is probably somebody who needs to hear this and is going through this right now. They're doing all these things, and they're just frustrated, they're overwhelmed, they're watching all these other people achieve these great results and it's not happening for them and they think, “Why is it happening for them and not me?” It can definitely start to create some feelings of envy or feelings of jealousy and that's not really a place that we ideally want to be, especially if we're trying to grow our business, grow our income, or get more clients. We don't want to sit in that place of desperation, overwhelm or frustration. “I don't do too much outside of football during football season, because this is my job and I take it seriously. I don't do too much, don't really go out at all that much, don't eat out or anything, try to stay focused and stay to myself.” Robert Griffin III [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVDYOdJ9m34[/embedyt]   Out of sight...out of mind – goals need to be in your face! There are many distractions and bright shiny ideas that can grab your attention. Squirrel! Told you! You lose sight of your goals when they are not front and centre. Maybe you equate goals with resolutions. Resolutions tend to die off in January or February. You may become frustrated and give up all together. It is never too late to hope back on the goal setting wagon and get yourself on track to smashing your goals and giving your best! Trouble comes from wanting instant gratification. When results do not come instantly, people lose motivation and worse even give up. Most of the goals people want to achieve require perseverance and discipline to be sustainable. Disappointment comes from setting unrealistic goals and setting them and leaving them. Experts say it takes 21 days to change a habit, I say let's go for 30 days to make it sustainable. What's a few more days! Face it…if your goals are NOT S.M.A.R.T. (Specific. Measurable. Achievable. Realistic, Timely), you are wishing and a hoping. If you are not inking them, you are not thinking about them. Write out your goals on 3 X 5 index cards, Post-It Notes, or print them out using 72-100 point font. Post them around your home and workplace. Share your goals with others. Don't worry there will be people who shoot down your goals or say not very nice things. Avoid or limit the time you spend with people who do not support your goals. Build in accountability partners into your plan so you can achieve your goals. You want to surround yourself with people who hold you accountable, encourage, and support you. You want those goals to be right where you can see them. Read them aloud several times a day. Review them daily, monthly, quarterly, and yearly. Form that emotional connection to your goal by imagining your goal achieved. If you have no emotional attachment to your goal, you will not put in the work to get what you want. Put pictures up of your goals. Maybe you are saving for a dream home – put up a picture of a floor plan. Dreaming of buying a boat or getting a promotion. Put up a picture that has you achieving those things – keep your goals front and centre! Monitor your progress regularly! There will be sacrifices along the way and you will have to be disciplined. You may question yourself at times and ask yourself, “Is it really worth it?” This is your challenge line! Connect with the emotion and push forward. Yes, you may have to skip the fancy dinners, the random drives around town, or the latest trend or electronic but your goal achieved is worth waiting and striving for. When you are faced with a setback or a bad day, regroup but continue to take small actions to keep motivated. Some people say you need to be motivated to take necessary actions. When you act and start seeing results, you will be motivated to achieve more! Celebrate the milestones and everyday wins! Set tangible rewards for yourself along the way. Keep those goals front and centre! Your level of effort tends to come from how much you believe in yourself. If you are overcome with self-doubt or have a lack of belief you will cap the level of your success. The only way you can see what you capable of, is to take action. We do not tap into all of our skills as much as we could. We usually need to be challenged in some way to tap into our internal resources. What you will probably learn is that many of the challenges we face are the challenges created in our minds. An effort is fueled by a person's passion for achieving a goal. With commitment, determination, and perseverance achieving what seemed impossible can become possible. Don't be afraid to put in the hard work necessary to achieve your goals. You will get better through repetition and pay attention to the smallest increments of change. Daniel Coyle also talked about how hockey great Wayne Gretzky would fall while doing solitary drills on the ice. Gretzky purposely did this so he would find ways to improve his skating ability. In Hank Haney's book about Tiger Woods, he talks about how Tiger Woods would change up his swing so that he could develop greater precision with his swing. By disrupting patterns and practicing a new ways, you create new neuropathways that provide an opportunity to rewire the way you do things and by doing so they achieve greater success. Even with talent in order to get better you have to be willing to make mistakes and to learn from them see you can become better at your strengths. EPISODE 31: The Knowing and Doing Gap Many of us know what to do but fall short on doing what we know we need to do. The difference between knowing and doing is that in knowing-what you believe to be true and is based on the knowledge and experience you have. Whereas, doing is about the actions you take based on the knowledge and experiences you have. The gap between knowing and doing can be small as dime or as large as the universe. We filter the world through what we believe-what we know. Our perception is our reality. It does not mean it is always correct. Have you ever made an assumption and realized that you are totally wrong? Doing means taking action - it means taking a risk. Why is it that so many of us know what to do but do not do it? You are operating from a place of fear. You're scared to take risks because you scared to step out of that comfort zone. The comfort that you believe will protect and keep you from harm. It is a human need to feel safe and secure. You can take calculated risks. Calculated risks are where you have done your homework and decreased the risk, and lessened the uncertainty. And most of all minimized your fears. Conduct Research- Get more information by surfing the web or reading articles or magazines or books in the area that you need more information. Ask Questions. Interview someone who has been where you want to be or has the knowledge that you are seeking. Challenge Assumptions. Challenge others assumptions because the best way is not always the way things have been done. Encourage people to look for better ways of doing things and exploring more perspectives and options. Learn Best by Doing. Take small actions. Learn and adjust as you go. Learn from mistakes and experiences. Knowing is one thing. Talking the talk. Walking the talk means that you are acting based on what you know. Talking is not the same as taking action. Talking may make you make you look smart; however, acting and doing will give you the results that demonstrate you are truly smart. The biggest gap between knowing and doing is procrastination. As you may know what to do, this means not hesitate on taking actions. The reason for this is sometimes you don't realize the impact on your results by not taking those actions. You could be self-sabotaging yourself from getting the success you say that you want. If you're not willing to do and take the actions necessary, it really means that you're not really concerned about it all. Some people just believe that they're entitled to the results they want. Taking action means that you must put in effort and the work required getting the results you desire. Some people procrastinate because they don't believe in themselves or they don't have a clear vision of what they're trying to achieve. Whereas, others are in search for perfection and they hold themselves back from taking action. By wasting time you're wasting money, resources, and the only time you've got. Time is not replaceable.
