Part 2 Doug and I continue our conversation about the historical landing of his Gyrocopter on the lawn of the U. S. Capital as well as Campaign Finance reform. *******Doug landed an ultralight gyrocopter (think flying motorcycle) on the west lawn of the US Capitol Building in April 2015 with 535 letters, one to every member of Congress calling them out for their greed and the role of big money in politics. Doug is back with a book because corruption hasn't changed. (It's not just the GOP, either.)FLIGHT PLAN is a memoir - 90% of the book (by word count) covers his story, including a personal tragedy that created the frame of mind for such a radical stunt. And what happened afterward - the media firestorm and a vindictive prosecutor pushing charges carrying potentially nine years in prison. The other 10% scattered with a light footprint is the true topic of the book - what institutional graft is, how it functions, and how we can end it. Citizens know corruption exists like an obscene deformity of what democracy should be. They don't want to look because they fear there is no cure. And there is. The remedy for institutional graft is non-partisan, easy to understand, and it makes fixing everything else possible.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=10153017864224205C-Span: https://www.c-span.org/video/?326060-3/washington-journal-gyrocopter-pilot-doug-hughesDaily Show: https://www.cc.com/video/gsg0lp/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-wack-hawk-downBook: Buy Here******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@betertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCX0ETs2wpOHbCuhUNr0XFTw?view_as=subscriberInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Twitter: https://twitter.com/DaunaD1Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomVideo of the interview is available here: https://youtu.be/6nGr3iUd1o4Have a question or want to be a guest on the podcast email: dauna@bettertopodcast.comTo see upcoming guests click here: https://www.dmneedom.com/better-topodcastSupport the podcast here: https://www.patreon.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomSound Design and production by Rich Zei at Third Ear Audio Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thirdearaudioproductionsBuzzsprout: Affiliate link https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=1832259©2022 Better To...Podcast with D. RELEASE DATE 01/07/2022 SEASON 5 premiere! Doug Hughes is a retired mailman living on the Gulf Coast of Florida. In previous jobs, he's been a restaurant manager, computer programmer, and he's held a few dozen other jobs from mopping hospital floors to driving for Uber. He made a daring and unauthorized flight in a 250-pound ultralight gyrocopter with 535 letters, one to every member of Congress, landing on the west lawn of the US Capitol Building in 2015. After proving his dedication, he demonstrated his expertise on the crisis of institutional corruption in dozens of media appearances and speaking engagements. The flight earned Doug four months in prison, it also cost him his job with the U.S. Postal Service and the gyroplane, a deal he does not regret. Doug is an activist, especially but not exclusively on big money in politics, speaking, demonstrating, and writing on the subject whenever an audience will tolerate him. In April 2015, a mailman concerned about climate change and political corruption decided he needed a dramatic way to bring attention to those issues, which he believes threaten our country, indeed the world. So, he decided that air mail delivery was the only way -- not by just dropping letters to Congress in a mailbox and forgetting about it, but by personally flying those letters to the U.S. Capitol himself. So, he trailered a 250-pound flying contraption called a gyrocopter from Florida to Pennsylvania to stage his one-man protest. He flew 70 miles south from Gettysburg across Maryland, turned left at the Potomac, and two miles up the Capitol Mall, past the White House and past the Washington Monument to land on the lawn of the US Capitol Building. The man's name is Doug Hughes and he's here with Lean to The Left today to recount his story, which he has detailed in a memoir, FLIGHT PLAN: A Mailman's Aerial Excursion and Special Delivery.Hughes succeeded in gaining attention, of course. His exercise of free speech eventually cost him four months in jail, but he doesn't regret that and during our interview offers concrete ideas about how the political system should be changed to eliminate corruption of those we elect to represent us.Listen to our interview.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Doug a former postal worker and political activist is known for landing a one-man ultralight gyrocopter on the lawn of the United States Capitol on April 15, 2015. Hughes was carrying 535 letters, one to each member of Congress, protesting what he referred to as bipartisan corruption and dysfunctional government.According to him, his intent was to deliver a political message by "delivering the mail." He carried 535 letters to Congress, individually stamped and addressed to each member of Congress. The flight from a small airport in Gettysburg, PA across Maryland finished on the west lawn of the US Capitol Building - a distance of about 70 miles and a total flight time of just under 90 minutes. He did many media interviews before about what he did, but he was never really asked about the real reason why he did what he did. A masterwork of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen is given a contemporary feel in a new L.A. Theatre Works production. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Robin Whitten share their thoughts on this piece of audio theater. The varied voices interact at breakneck speed and pacing, which can create a simultaneously overwhelming yet rewarding listening experience. Ibsen’s play is in full dramatic effect, with Jocelyn Towne’s Hedda raving and her husband jauntily oblivious as the intrigue of a marriage with a past plays out in our ears. Published by L.A. Hughes worked for 12 years as the associate artistic director of Seattle Repertory Theatre, from 1984 to 1996. As a Resident Director of the Roundabout Theatre, he has directed many plays for the Roundabout, including The Big Knife and Mrs. Warren's Profession. He directed Doubt: A Parable Off-Broadway and on Broadway, for which he won the 2005 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Director of a Play, and the 2005 Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play. Other directing credits include Death Takes a Holiday, Inherit the Wind, Outside Mullingar, The Father, and Junk: The Golden Age of Debt. What surprised me about this podcast, was how Doug didn’t start off wanting to be a Director or even in the theater at all (despite the theatrical heritage he comes from) . . . and how coming about his career as a last resort helped him develop even greater skills than studying it from birth. Listen in to this podcast to hear Doug talk about that, as well as: Why his research for plays gets him a lot of frequent flyer miles. How directing a play is like a lawyer trying a case. What his biggest responsibility is when working with Actors. How he gets feedback, and what he does with it, including sometimes ignoring it. How being a scientist is like being a Director. The War of Art is a terrific book by Steven Pressfield. It’s about overcoming resistance, and getting down to your business, which is the business of art. One of Steven’s key points was how you should become a “pro.” The difference between an amateur and a pro is all about the attitude of the professional, and it made me think of our own site, The Producer's Perspective Pro, which we just revamped. Check it out at theproducersperspectivepro.com and make sure you read The War of Art. Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices. On April 15, 2015, 61-year-old rural mail carrier Doug Hughes grabbed headlines after flying his one-man gyrocopter from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to Washington DC and touching down on the west lawn of the Capitol building, bringing with him 535 letters - one for each member of Congress to draw attention to the pressing need for campaign finance reform. In this interview with The Young Turks’ Cenk Uygur, Hughes talks about: - How he came up with the idea for his historic flight - Whether he was concerned about being shot out of the air - How politicians, the moneyed interests and the mainstream media all conspire to perpetuate a corrupt system - How the right and left can come together to battle corporate cronyism and government corruption - The felony and misdemeanor charges against him and the upcoming trial that could send him away for X years in prison - How crony capitalism and a corrupt Congress are intentionally driving the US Postal Service into bankruptcy - The next stunt he’s planning to shake Americans out of their complacency about the need to get money out of politics and restore democracy.
