Episode SummaryThis episode of Nashville Restaurant Radio is what happens when hospitality stops being a business plan and starts being personal.Robin and Jennifer didn't set out to build a concept — they set out to find their neighborhood pub. After meeting, building a life together in East Nashville, and eventually moving to Donelson, they went looking for the kind of local gathering place every great neighborhood deserves. There was just one problem: it didn't exist. So they built it.What followed is one of the most heartfelt conversations we've had on the show. Robin and Jennifer open up about the leap from guests to operators, the emotional connection they've built with their community, and why their regulars — lovingly called the “Homegrown Homies” — mean everything to them. This is a story about intention, courage, and what happens when operators truly care about the people walking through their doors. What We Talk AboutHow Robin and Jennifer met and built their partnershipLife in East Nashville and the move to DonelsonThe moment they realized their neighborhood was missing a true local pubTaking the risk to create what didn't existBuilding deep relationships with their regulars (“Homegrown Homies”)Why culture and staff connection drive everything they doWhat community-first hospitality really looks like in practiceBig Takeaways1. The best concepts solve a real neighborhood problem.Homegrown wasn't born from trend-chasing — it came from a genuine gap in the community.2. Regulars are built through intention, not luck.Their “Homegrown Homies” didn't happen by accident. It's the result of consistent, authentic hospitality.3. Culture is the moat. You can copy menus. You can copy design. You cannot easily copy emotional connection. Why This Episode MattersIf you want a case study in what “Stronger Restaurants, Stronger Communities” actually looks like on the ground — this is it.Robin and Jennifer are building more than a taproom. They're building belonging. And in today's restaurant landscape, that might be the most durable competitive advantage there is.Support LocalVisit Homegrown Taproom and Kitchen in Donelson, support the operators who are pouring back into their neighborhoods, and if this episode resonates, share it with someone who believes restaurants still have the power to bring people together.Stronger Restaurants. Malmo Taproom had a tap takeover with Saez and Son from the Valenciana region of Spain. They had lots to try from TIPA to Pastry sours. It was tough to pick so we went with the two more interesting beers. Twisted Mary is a tomato gose that tastes more like vegetable or tomato juice than beer. Produced by their side project LOKO*, this beer will be really devisive. If you don't like tomato juice, you'll want to give it a pass. Palm Beach is a 6% ABV pastry sour with mango, platano and coconut milk. This is a rich delicous brew that you want to keep drinking. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #gose #pastrysour

Mike welcomes his brother Jizzy Jake Riley for a special Thanksgiving Thursday Stoutsgiving episode recorded in the taproom. They taste and rate six dark beers — including Bottle Logic's Jam the Radar (raspberry imperial stout), Chapman Brewing's nitro oatmeal stout, Pizza Port's Bacon & Eggs imperial coffee porter, Aerolodge's Voyager barrel-aged imperial stout, Great Notion's Barbarian peanut-butter cheesecake pastry stout, and Frogtown's Prince George bourbon-barrel vanilla porter — offering tasting notes, ABV info and personal ratings. The conversation ranges from favorite Thanksgiving foods and side-dish poll results to nostalgic holiday memories and traditions. Mike and Jizzy debate stout styles (barrel-aged vs. pastry vs. coffee), nitro vs. non-nitro, seasonal stouts vs. year-round pours, and play Stoutsgiving trivia and games with listeners. Key takeaways: Jam the Radar and Great Notion's Barbarian stand out as top pours, Chapman's nitro serves as a palate cleanser, and the hosts even blend all six beers into a surprise “stout gumbo.” The episode closes with gratitude, industry reflections, a preview of an upcoming reunion episode (150), and a reminder to support local breweries and follow @Wildrileysupply on Instagram.

Meet Monica and David Kowalski, the husband-and-wife duo behind Colorado Springs' beloved Lebowski's Tap Room and the award-winning premium coffee liqueur, Lebowski's Kool-Luah. What started as Monica's dad's cherished family recipe has evolved into a craft liqueur that's earning rave reviews and found its way on Uncle Brad's shelf as his favorite coffee liqueur. The Kowalskis share the heartwarming story of how endless compliments on the family recipe led them to take the leap from restaurateurs to craft distilling, creating a coffee liqueur that truly stands apart from the crowd. With its stunning mid-century atomic era bottle design that perfectly captures The Big Lebowski's laid-back aesthetic, this isn't your typical coffee liqueur—it's a premium experience that even has Uncle Brad declaring it his new go-to expression. Monica and David guide listeners through their signature Hot Honey Espresso Martini, just one of the many creative coffee cocktails served at their taproom alongside an impressive array of White Russian variations. The conversation dives into the fascinating history of coffee liqueur, exploring how Lebowski's Kool-Luah builds upon the legacy of coffee liqueur pioneers while carving out its own unique identity in the spirits world. The episode wraps up with invaluable advice from the Kowalskis on elevating your home bartending game, sharing how they've translated lessons from the corporate world about consistency and quality control into both their restaurant operations and their craft liqueur production. Whether you're a devoted White Russian, Espresso Martini enthusiast, or curious about the craft distilling world, this episode serves up the perfect blend of entrepreneurial spirit, cocktail craftsmanship, and that distinctly chill Lebowski vibe. In this episode, Laura from Deusterbeck's Brewing Company shares the story of how she and her husband. Ben, transformed her family farm into a thriving brewery. We discuss their commitment to sustainability, the importance of family involvement, and the unique beers they craft using locally-sourced and grown ingredients. The conversation also touches on their community engagement and collaborations with local agribusinesses, as well as the challenges and benefits of their location in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. Laura emphasizes the emotional connection to her farm and the legacy they are building for future generations - she is the 6th generation on the farm and is raising her kids to be the 7th. When Derrick and Jonathan visited with Laura, her and her team were brewing with the Old World Wisconsin team, having a chance to see the "olden days" brewing process at work. You can get the Old World / Deusterbeck's collab, "Two Red Barns" on-site at Old World Wisconsin in the Tavern.
