Jennifer Pan, raised by strict "tiger parents" obsessed with her success, faced immense pressure to excel academically and conform to their expectations. Despite early achievements in piano and figure skating, the pressure mounted as she progressed through school. Fearing her parents' disapproval, Jennifer resorted to forging report cards and lying about her academic performance. Her controlled upbringing led her to rebel by secretly dating and lying about her whereabouts. Eventually, she concocted a plan to have her parents killed, believing it would grant her freedom to be with her boyfriend and inherit their wealth. However, her plan went awry, resulting in the murder of her mother and severe injuries to her father.Despite initially fabricating a story of a home invasion, Jennifer confessed to hiring hitmen but claimed she intended to have herself killed. However, evidence contradicted her account, leading to her conviction, along with her boyfriend and the hitmen, for first-degree murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder.Jennifer's trial revealed the complexities of her troubled upbringing, her desperation to break free from her parents' control, and the tragic consequences of her actions. Ultimately, she was sentenced to life in prison, leaving behind a shattered family and a father grappling with the loss of his wife and daughter's betrayal.Find True Crime Stories For (No) Sleep on:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/true-crime-stories-for-no-sleep/id1711663474Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/7CZfYstO3DdWMOumgUv3v5Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@DreamsandCrimes Big Red Button: A Fallout PodcastCrawl out through the Fallout with us!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify
Jennifer Pan grew up as the daughter of extremely strict "Tiger Parents", Bic and Han Pan. She was never enough and struggled with school which caused her to start faking and lying about aspects of her life. From there she went down a horrible rabbit hole of lies that ended in her Mom's murder, Father's attempted murder and life in prison...Thank you all so much for listening to today's episode! American parenting culture constantly emphasizes skills-building and academics, which puts a ton of pressure on Dad's to become Tiger Parents. But what about straight-up fun?! What about free play, imagination, and child-driven adventure? Matt and Max take a look at the many different kinds of play - from team sports to digging around in the mud - exploring the invaluable qualities that horsing around, in all its forms, helps instill in children. Most importantly, we're on the lookout for ways to have adventures and create activities that are fun for everybody - including the grown-ups - because most of us Dads could use a little more play in our lives too. It's all fun and games until the United Nations recognizes play as a right of every child. This is serious business. LET'S GO!
If you've seen a 3-year old wielding a quarter-size violin and sawing at its strings to play Mozart, chances are you witnessed a student of the Suzuki Method. Created by Japanese educator, Shinichi Suzuki, the Suzuki Method is how many young American children learn to play classical music on the violin, cello and piano, among other instruments. But the Suzuki Method isn't just about teaching children to master Bach or a vehicle for Tiger Parents to cultivate exceptional children. Rather, it's an approach to education that believes talent is a muscle to be developed and that all children should be measured against their own abilities. We'll talk about Suzuki and why he believed that little children could do great things. Guests: Eri Hotta, author, Suzuki: The Man and His Dream to Teach The Children of the World Cathy Lee, Suzuki Method educator, Lee studied directly with Shinichi Suzuki, and has taught violin for over 40 years. She has also trained dozens of teachers in the Suzuki Method.
Today's guests are producer Jeff Shane and investigative reporter Conor Powell. Conor is a journalist and podcast host whose latest series is Lords of Soccer, how Fifa stole the beautiful game and the largest corruption scandal in the world. He's also the host of KT Studios' upcoming podcast, Death Island You can follow Conor on Twitter @conormpowell. Jennifer Pan seemed to have the perfect life, but was it really the perfect lie? Jennifer Pan (b. June 17, 1986) is a Canadian woman who was convicted in 2014, of the murder for hire targeting both of her parents. Her parents, Bich ("Bick") and Hann Pan came to Canada in the late 70's as political refugees. Jennifer and her brother were raised in a strict home with extremely high expectations. Bich and Hann made many sacrifices to ensure that their children would have a comfortable life and quite rightly, expected their children to adhere to the rules. Jennifer was not willing or able to live up to these expectations. In 9th grade she was falling behind in her education… and there was something else.... Daniel Wong, a boyfriend she kept as a secret for years…. She knew that this was unacceptable so, she devised a plan… In response to what Jennifer Pan felt was “abusive tiger parenting that went on into her early 20's” Bich and Hann were to be murdered, in their own home on the night of November 8, 2010. The attack resulted in the death of her mother, and life threatening injuries to her father. He would survive, albeit with lifelong emotional scars from seeing his wife murdered in front of him. Jennifer's lies took on a life of their own and she was eventually so deep in them that she was quite literally caught in her own web. She, and the others who were tried were all convicted on December 13, 2014. Each received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. Her father and brother were granted a court order that banned her from ever contacting members of her surviving family again. On November 8th, 2010, three intruders entered the Pan family household in Markham, Ontario near Toronto. After stealing the cash in the home, they tied up the family's 24-year-old daughter, Jennifer, and shot her parents. Her mother, Bich, died instantly, but her father, Han, miraculously survived. When York Regional arrived at the scene, they quickly realized that not everything was as it seemed. They turned their attention toward one of the central characters in the event: Jennifer Pan herself. Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/DasCriminal Sources: https://bit.ly/3bhoMVw
In this episode, we talk about "Tiger Parents"! We discuss what kind of parenting styles we were brought up in, how that has affected us, and how our relationship with our parents changed and evolved over the years. We also reflect on whether we would raise our own kids the same way our parents did. And finally, we answer the question of whether all Asian parents are "Tiger Parents".

What's your parenting style? Experts have identified multiple styles of parenting. Here are a few that I found. 1. Permissive Parents 2. Authoritarian Parents 3. Indulgent or Bulldozer Parents 4. Tiger Parents 5. Neglectful or uninvolved Parents. I believe parenting should be kept on a spectrum. No one should be of one style or the other. We are all combinations of various styles. Now of course it depends on your background. Like I was brought up in South Asian household and society. So I knew what is the usual style of parenting there. However, because I had my children in the US, I picked and chose best of both the worlds. I think it worked to some extent. However, both parents should be fully involved and must be on one page. Parents should not be manipulated or allow children to come between them in their upbringing especially. The main goal is to build confidence in your children. I will be Sharing some tips on raising Confident and Optimistic children in coming weeks. Hope you will tune in to the weekly topics and some live podcasts on youtube, facebook and instagram. Author of 'Excellent Sheep' William Deresiewicz Bill tells us of a gaping void we have in our midst. Children are being raised to do what they think their parents want more than what they want themselves. A huge number of third level students are afraid to study what they want and instead chose subjects that are "accepted" and "expected". We talk how this originates in the home with "Tiger Parents", we discuss the problems of pressure and aimlessness on the campuses and the so-called "Stanford Duck Syndrome". We discuss the true meaning of diversity and how corporations can harness it for the future. We discuss the inequality of the education system and how it is no wonder that GroupThink is alive and well. Bill also informs us of how presidential candidates all follow the same path of education. Finally, Bill offers some sound advice to break the cycle so we stop producing 'Excellent Sheep' You can find out more about William, including how to book him for Keynote talks here. http://www.billderesiewicz.com/ You can find Bill on twitter here : https://twitter.com/WDeresiewicz
