How do you know when to start, stop, or continue with a value analysis review? There should be valid reasons why you are going to perform a value analysis review, why you may stop it midstream, or why it must continue out to a final resolution. These are valid issues that VA/supply chain team members deal with every day. Today I am talking about the “Start, Stop, Continue” conundrum. If you get this dynamic right, you will do big things and get great results for your health system. If you get it wrong, you have just wasted a bunch of time with little or no results to show for it. The strategy here is to get it right more than you get it wrong.

How do you ensure that your organization is forward facing? How do you inspire Board members to be involved in recruiting new members? How do you make sure that the next set of leaders will be well trained and focused on the strategic plan?In this episode of Associations Thrive, host Joanna Pineda interviews Dr. Hudson Garrett, ED & EVP and Karen Niven, President of the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP). Dr. Hudson and Karen discuss:How healthcare value analysis professionals work to improve the overall patient experience, reduce costs within the system, and make healthcare affordable and available for all.How Karen is a nurse by training and how she found a home and her people in the AHVAP community. How Karen was motivated to become a board member because through her training as a nurse, she learned that you always leave organizations and places better than how you found it.How good relations between the chief staff executive and the board really power associations to success. How these good relations are the result of trust and dedication towards a shared goal. How AHVAP recently held a Future Summit that brought together people from all organization types, levels, and functions in healthcare to talk about clinical innovations and making healthcare better. How they reached out to an academic partner to help them document what they discussed during the summit to hopefully encourage more research. How a lot of innovation is coming from the industry partners, so they can't be excluded from the conversation just because they aren't doctors, nurses, or working in hospitals. How the board has a very active role to play in the recruiting of new member. Karen, as board chair, expects board members to post about what AHVAP is doing, as well as post about AHVAP membership to their networks. AHVAP provides toolkits for board members to use, including graphics and messaging. How Karen and Hudson are working together to ensure that when the next set of leaders come in, they will be well trained and laser focused on the AHVAP mission.References:AHVAP WebsiteAHVAP Annual Conference and Industry Partner Expo
Everyone knows that value analysis is a big money saver from the standpoint of cost avoidance with new product requests as well as picking the right products from contract conversions. Not to mention, managing the supply resilience and recall issues that occur oh so often which hospitals cannot afford to throw major dollars at anymore. Value analysis allows you to manage all these issues and keep costs in check, but is that all value analysis can do? The answer to that question is no, value analysis can do so much more.
How do you measure value in healthcare to benefit both patients and healthcare professionals in the sourcing of goods and services? How do you demonstrate to industry partners that they are valued in the profession? In this episode of Associations Thrive, host Joanna Pineda interviews Dr. Hudson Garrett, Executive Director & Executive Vice President of the Association of Healthcare Value Analysis Professionals (AHVAP). Hudson discusses:What healthcare value analysis professionals do, and how they strive for exceptional value for patients and healthcare professionals; it's about more than just price. How the profession has become multi-disciplinary and now includes nurses, doctors, laboratory professionals, infection preventionists, supply chain professionals, pharmacists, professors, and more. How AHVAP created a way to measure competency in the profession through its board certification. How value analysis professionals focus on patient and healthcare safety through the sourcing of proper equipment and supplies. How he just become a CAE (Certified Association Executive)How Hudson wears two hats; He is ED of AHVAP and also owns a consulting practice. How AHVAP is doing interesting things through industry partner collaborations because a lot of innovation of products and technologies come from across the industry. How industry partners can now vote and receive the same benefits that healthcare professionals get.How AHVAP created a code of conduct for industry partners to prevent conflicts of interest. How AHVAP has a board certification for value analysis professionals. How AHVAP is creating microcredentials so that members can develop expertise in very specific topics and mature members can continue to learn and grow. How AHVAP is creating customized development plans for teams within an organization. How membership has tripled in the last 18 months.AHVAP has a future summit coming up this summer where the entire profession will be looking at what's next for analysis value professionals.References:AHVAP WebsiteIndustry Partner Expo

We are in tough budgetary times right now with regards to expense reduction at just about every health system in the country. Increased labor costs, supply chain issues, pricing increases, and inflation are really hurting our health systems' bottom lines. As a value analysis professional, you may ask, how do we make a big splash in the savings bucket when a good amount of our efforts are related to new products, product problems, contract conversions, and recalls? The answer is, retrospective value analysis reviews (RVAR).
With Suzanne Smith, Solutions Advisor, Lumere—a GHX Company, and Kerry Lepage, Clinical Nurse Leader and Director of Surgical Services at Maine Health. Suzanne and Kerry discuss how they got into healthcare supply chain and value analysis, successful strategic sourcing initiatives, the key stakeholders in value analysis, and how to gain buy-in for successful change.
We continue to see value analysis professionals working through a value analysis committee structure on new and renewal GPO contracts, new product requests, recalls, etc., even if they call them value analysis teams. Let me remind you that there is a big difference. To this end, here are three tips about value analysis committees vs. teams you can't afford to miss:
As we begin a new year, it is good to take a step back and take a good look in the mirror at your value analysis and cost management programs. These are especially important right now in these tough economic times where your Chief Financial Officer is looking for every dollar of revenue and savings they can muster. Plus, it is just a good time to improve the things that need to be improved and make your value analysis program more efficient, time savvy, and get better results than you have in the past.

The easiest, most foolproof and decision-driven way that we have discovered to meet this goal is with data analytics. On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl talks about the importance of putting your supply chain plan in writing: "The most critical element of your report should be your problem statement. The reason for this is that if you can't identify a real, tangible, and critical problem that needs to be solved, your management or customers won't be interested in solving it NOW. This is where you use statistics, stories, and examples to build your case for change. By the way, money talks, so make sure you show your readers how they are losing money (and quantify it) by not accepting your proposal..." Tune in for the full article! On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl talks about the ups and downs of brainstorming in the healthcare supply chain decision making process: "Other experts have said that there are a lot of bad ideas thrown around in brainstorming sessions and that they should be vigorously debated and then eliminated immediately. Our opinion is that if you follow these recommendations, there will be a good chance that no time will be left to evaluate all the ideas accumulated on your chart and you will miss some big savings, quality, or safety improvement opportunities by doing so..." There are many different iterations that value analysis has morphed, evolved, and emerged into leading up to 2022. Value analysis is predominantly applied to products, services, and technologies in the healthcare supply chain. The primary focus of value analysis practitioners is working with hospital and/or system-based value analysis teams that are assigned categories of products and services to review. The main goal is to validate the efficacy of these products and services but also to assist with the selection of the right product used in the clinical environment. Lastly, healthcare value analysis should be a catch point for savings and quality improvements while performing various reviews, studies, and evaluations on an ongoing basis.

Value analysis software is here to stay in the healthcare supply chain and there are good reasons why. Those who employ value analysis software at their hospital, system, or IDN know that it easily consolidates all of their information in one platform. This aids in vetting new product, service, and technology requests and can provide important resources for evidenced-based decisions. Slowly and surely, the days of value analysis professionals toiling with multitudes of Word documents and spreadsheets that create even more work can be behind you if you embrace and deploy one of the versions of value analysis software on the market today.

On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl talks about the importance of "objection busters" for your hospital's VAT: "One example is a COO who, after a value analysis team meeting where he was their champion, cornered doctors in his hospital's hallways to discuss why they turned down the opportunity to save money on pacemakers. And believe me, they had better have a good reason for not accepting positive change or he would counter their objections one after another...." Tune in for the full article! On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl shares his top 10 best practices for hospital value analysis in the US: "Most value analysis programs focus their efforts on GPO contract and requisition driven offerings, whereas, best-practice hospitals strategically plan their value analysis candidates and target their savings. Results show that strategic planning driven VA programs save 10 to 15 times more than GPO and requisition driven VA programs..." Tune in for the full scoop! Loving the #PowerSupply conversations? On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl argues for looking beyond a price-only view of your Supply Chain responsibilities: "If you are just attacking the price at the pump, then you are missing huge savings opportunities in your products, configurations, deliveries, and disposal cost. While price is important, it pales in comparison to your total cost of acquisition to disposition of everything you are buying. That's why price is only 38% of the value equation and the balance of your product, service, and technology cost is 62%. What cost drivers will obtain the best return-on-your-investment if you put them under your value analysis microscope? I'm sure you now know the answer to this question..." On this week's episode of Power Supply Articles On-the-Go, Bob Yokl describes the importance of diagnosing your healthcare Supply Chain challenges before trying to implement a solution: "The simple truth is that we, as an industry, are treating symptoms of a problem more often than the actual cause of the behavior with so-so results. To correct this behavior, diagnose before you prescribe a solution. This will enable you to root out the causes of your cost and quality issues and then stamp out all waste and inefficiencies in your supply streams..." Loving the #PowerSupply conversations?
