There are many different iterations that value analysis has morphed, evolved, and emerged into leading up to 2022. Value analysis is predominantly applied to products, services, and technologies in the healthcare supply chain. The primary focus of value analysis practitioners is working with hospital and/or system-based value analysis teams that are assigned categories of products and services to review. The main goal is to validate the efficacy of these products and services but also to assist with the selection of the right product used in the clinical environment. Lastly, healthcare value analysis should be a catch point for savings and quality improvements while performing various reviews, studies, and evaluations on an ongoing basis.

The specific circumstances that call us to lead will be different, but the core dilemmas and ethical challenges are very similar. Faced with these challenges, each of us must decide if we will follow our ego-centered inclinations or lead for the good of everyone whose lives we touch? Will we endanger or impair those around us to satisfy our own self-interest, or will we lead in a manner that is true to our values? In his inspiring book Lead True, Jeff Thompson, MD, has masterfully compiled stories from the business, healthcare, and education fields, illustrating how a diverse group of leaders has employed value-based leadership and succeeded. These case studies offer dynamic, living narratives that demonstrate ways in which a leader, fueled by personal values, can change people, organizations, and even entire industries. What sets this book apart is the interweaving of the author’s personal leadership story in healthcare to the insights from start-ups, mid-career, and top-level leaders—people who have proven that values-driven leadership is not simply a noble idea but one that actually works in practice. Date: August 21, 2014 Featuring: Neel Shah, MD, MPP, Founder and Executive Director, Costs of Care September Wallingford, RN, MSN, Brigham and Women’s Hospital; Director for Nursing Advocacy, Costs of Care Christopher Moriates, MD, Assistant Clinical Professor, UCSF; Director, Center for Healthcare Value’s “Caring Wisely"; Director of Implementation Initiatives, Costs of Care Michele Rhee, Director of Program Initiatives, National Brain Tumor Society; Director of Strategic Initiatives, Costs of Care It's an all-too-familiar scenario: a doctor mapping out next steps at a medical appointment — perhaps prescribing new medications or ordering some tests —oblivious to the costs, including whether the patient might bear the brunt of them.  Some now consider this a form of harm that physicians, nurses, and others need to become more conscious of and do everything possible to prevent. That’s why we hope you’ll listen to this WIHI, where our guests discuss an innovative effort in the US to help caregivers make more high-value decisions that can protect patients from unnecessary care and expenses. Fortunately, more providers today appreciate that they have a role to play in reducing overall health care costs in the US — especially when entrenched habits and “business as usual” lead to ordering a lot of procedures of questionable value. But it’s newer to translate this awareness into honest discussions with patients about treatment options in the context of their specific medical benefits and any financial concerns. Doing this in a way that does not compromise care, proponents argue, is both essential and possible.  Asking doctors and nurses to become more accountable for the financial burdens they may be unwittingly imposing on their patients has been the work of Dr. Neel Shah, the founder of Costs of Care. Dr. Shah and the assembled panel for the August 21 WIHI walked us through the many ways patients and their caregivers can both become more cost-conscious and, together, make better decisions. It’s a different kind of partnership that, on the one hand, can ensure that recommended care is followed and feasible; and on the other hand, could prevent someone from medical bankruptcy.

Joining me once again on the podcast today is John Toussaint, MD, the founder and CEO of the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value. We're talking about his latest book, Management on the Mend. John wrote this new book to document "core elements of successful Lean transformations" that he's seen, not just at ThedaCare, but at other organizations around the world. The book outlines a "transformation model" that can be used to structure a Lean transformation, while John admits there's not just one prescription or framework that could work. John was previously a guest for episodes #184, #159, #146, #72, #62, and #54 going back to 2008. His previous books, which I highly recommend, are On the Mend and the follow up Potent Medicine, both are Shingo Research Award recipients. Joining me for podcast #192 is John Torinus, author of the excellent book, The Company That Solved Health Care: How Serigraph Dramatically Reduced Skyrocketing Costs While Providing Better Care, and How Every Company Can Do the Same. John is the CEO of Wisconsin-based Serigraph Inc., a graphics parts manufacturer with ownership in ten plants in the U.S., Mexico, China and India with over $130M in annual sales. John has served as business editor and columnist at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. John is collaborating with the ThedaCare Center for Healthcare Value for a new workshop: "Solving the Employer Healthcare Crisis," to be held in Phoenix on January 28 (and hopefully again in the future). In this episode, we talk abouthow Serigraph has kept healthcare costs under control while improving the health of their employees. How do concepts of consumer choice, data transparency, and focusing on preventive care help to "engaged all employees in the healthcare challenge"? For example, 90% of their diabetic employees have their disease "under control" as compared to about 30% nationally. What is this "grass roots revolution" in healthcare?
