In this Episode: Today we are talking about Meditation - the benefits, how to begin, and why it should be a part of everyone's daily practice to live a better life.  Jess Gumkowski co-founder of YogiTriathlete joints me today. She is a well-respected meditation teacher and mindfulness coach within the endurance and ultra-endurance sports community. Jess is also co-creator of the M21 Revolution, a meditation and mindful living collective of cutting-edge change-makers.   Jess is a 500-hr Live Love Teach trained yoga and meditation instructor, board-certified massage therapist, 4x Ironman triathlete, 2x 50k ultra-runner, Vegan Lifestyle Coach and Educator, writer, speaker and podcast host. She credits mindfulness practices and high vibrational eating with creating significant and meaningful changes in her health, career, and relationships; and holds both essential to peak performance in sport and life. Key Takeaways: Meditation is all about moving beyond the intellect.  It takes time to start a meditative practice, so at first it will take willpower. Where to begin: Train the mind to concentrate on one thing before you begin.  When people start they try to concentrate the brain vs let it rest.  The idea is to notice when you are thinking and gently guide your mind back to rest. Breathe and use a mantra, which is a word like "love" that you repeat to yourself in your mind, not out loud. Don't look at how long you sit as the gauge of success.  Start with 5 minutes a day to get in the practice of sitting every day. Meditation is the mind at deep rest and you want to get into the habit of being in this state.  Get into the laboratory of self-study.  Jess recommends finding a teacher.  This can be a meditation app like "headspace", a youtube video, or person -- just find what “speaks” to you. Jess' 3 Best Tips for Creating a Mindful Practice: Look at the themes that keep showing up and get curious about what they are and what is at the essence of how it makes you feel.  If it is fear, then heal that fear in your meditation - tell yourself in your mind, “I am safe. I am okay.  Right now I am okay.” Pay attention to what you are doing while you are doing it - sticky notes on your mirror on your refrigerator.  Make a moving meditation throughout your day.  Turn off all distractions like music, podcasts, tv, and just be in the moment doing whatever it is you are doing. Start every morning with 5 deep breaths. In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk to Victoria Moran and JL Fields, the co-authors of The Main Street Vegan Academy Cookbook. We discuss some of the basic philosophies people identify with in the vegan and plant-based lifestyle. It’s interesting how individual journeys change people and although an overall goal may always be the same, core values can transform. Of course we talk about food, hacks for chopping food bills and discuss one lucky lobster. We also get into a bit of a debate when it comes to the topic of health and Veganism. You’ll have to listen for more on that. Victoria Moran is a vegan of over three decades and was voted “PETA’s Sexiest Vegan Over 50” in 2016. Listed by VegNews among the Top 10 Living Vegetarian Authors, she’s written twelve books, including The Love-Powered Diet, The Good Karma Diet, the international bestseller Creating a Charmed Life, and the iconic Main Street Vegan, whose fans include Bill Clinton and Ellen DeGeneres, and which won the “Best of Vegan 2017” contest in the book category. Victoria was featured twice on Oprah, she hosts the award-winning Main Street Vegan show on Unity Online Radio. She is also producer of the upcoming documentary from filmmaker Thomas Wade Jackson, The Compassion Project. JL Fields is a newspaper writer, magazine columnist, speaker, culinary instructor, lifestyle coach, activist, and radio personality. She is the author of VegNews Magazine’s 2017 Cookbook of the Year, The Vegan Air Fryer, Vegan Pressure Cooking, and co-author of Vegan for Her and is the founder and director of the Colorado Springs Vegan Cooking Academy. She is also a brands consultant for a variety of national companies. JL did her culinary training at the Natural Gourmet Institute and the Christina Pirello School of Natural Cooking and Integrative Health Studies. She is a Main Street Vegan Academy–certified Vegan Lifestyle Coach and Educator and a certified Food for Life instructor with Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). She writes and broadcasts from Colorado Springs, Colorado.   In this episode we discuss: The Main Street Vegan Academy Cookbook Lemon Dijon tempeh and mushrooms Spirituality Vegan values The healthy vegan debate Compassion The 3 myths Chopping your grocery bill vegan = weird The lucky lobster Actionable tips for putting more compassion into their everyday life   Links to things we mentioned: Thank you to our sponsor, . Special guest alert! This week Evy tries to keep her shit together as she interviews the woman who inspired The ChickPeeps Podcast in the first place, and who is an all-around beacon of light in the vegan community, Victoria Moran. Victoria is the host of the award-winning vegan podcast, Main Street Vegan, the author of thirteen books and the founder/director of the Main Street Vegan Academy where she trains and certifies vegan lifestyle coaches. A vegan for 35 years, Victoria shares what it was like being vegan when nobody knew what that meant, and discusses the concept of Attractivism as a tool for change. She also explains how veganism is an extension of her faith and spiritual life and shares her best advice for accelerating the dream of a vegan world. Also on this episode… 35 years vegan! Victoria talks about what life was like as a vegan over three decades ago: ‘It was so weird that very few people criticised it. Victoria shares her struggle going vegan as she was trying to overcome a binge eating disorder. What is a ‘Main Street Vegan?' ‘If we're going to have a vegan world then we're going to have to be open to liberals and conservatives and religious people and atheists and agnostics and rich people and poor people…the way I look at it is that every human being has at least one thing in common and that is that we all have a heart.' The Main Street Vegan Academy - Victoria describes the process of becoming a Vegan Lifestyle Coach Attractivism - Living in a way that makes other people want what you have. Is attractivism enough? We discuss the best way to do in-person activism. Raising a child vegan and Victoria's advice to worried parents of young vegans. In every reputable study over the past 50 years -with the exception of vitamin B12 - we don't see any [health] problems with vegans. Veganism and Religion - how extending love to animals should be a core tenet of one's spritiual practice Victoria's advice to all vegans wishing to make a change: Be aspirational. In today’s episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast we talk to the Yogi Triathlete, Jess and BJ Gumkowski about high vibes. High vibes is the state we all want to be in – feeling good, moving with the flow of life and being our very best positive selves. We talk about how our exercise, the people we interact with, the food we eat, getting still and the way we talk and think all affect our vibes. Jess shares how she used to be a very low vibe person (she was kind and caring, just not so much to herself) and how she made small changes to be the high energy, positive thinking, trail running Yogi Triathlete she is today. There is a really great connection between the 4 of us on this show and we hope you feel it! Jess is Head Yogi at Yogi Triathlete. She is a yoga instructor, meditation teacher, multi-time Ironman triathlete, ultra runner and podcaster. Jess is a Vegan Lifestyle Coach and Educator and author of the Yogi Triathlete Cookbook: High Vibe Recipes for the Athlete Appetite. She credits mindfulness practices and high vibrational eating with creating significant and meaningful changes in her health, career, and relationships; and holds both essential to peak performance in sport and life. Jess has well over a decade of experience working with athletes on body and mind mastery. BJ is an 11x Ironman triathlete, yoga instructor, podcaster, personal trainer and mindfulness-based triathlon and running coach. His zeal for life is infectious as is his passion for serving those around him in achieving their greatest dreams. BJ’s mindfulness practice was born out of his darkest night and has since become a focal point of his training. He is certified in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center from Nutrition Studies and is currently one of the top Ironman triathletes in the USA and he’s doing it all on plants. Together they are on a mission to create a better world by changing the face of athleticism, teaching mindfulness, sharing stories through the Yogi Triathlete podcast and promoting a healthy lifestyle through plant-based nutrition.   In this episode we discuss: What is Yogi Triathlete? In this episode I interview two fabulous vegan powerhouses, both of whom have previously appeared on the show as individual guests: Victoria Moran from Main Street Vegan Academy in New York and vegan lifestyle coach JL Fields in Colorado. The reason I've got them back on the show and together is because they've co-authored a new book and being experienced authors, I knew they'd have a ton of advice on writing, co-authoring and publishing books. Victoria is a vegan of over three decades and made her reputation in the self-help genre with books including the international bestseller, Creating a Charmed Life. A twice-featured guest on Oprah, Victoria's vegan titles include The Love-Powered Diet, The Good Karma Diet, and Main Street Vegan, which received endorsements from Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Clinton. A renowned and popular international speaker, she trains vegan lifestyle coaches, educators and entrepreneurs via her in-person Main Street Vegan Academy and hosts the Main Street Vegan podcast on Unity Radio. JL is the founder and culinary director of the Colorado Springs Vegan Cooking Academy. She is a Master Vegan Lifestyle Coach & Educator, personal chef, career coach, and a corporate consultant offering wellness training, brand representation, and strategic planning services. Her books include Vegan Pressure Cooking and The Vegan Air Fryer. JL produces and hosts the weekly radio program Easy Vegan, blogs at JLGoesVegan.com and writes the monthly vegan dining review for the Colorado Springs Gazette. Left: Victoria Moran. Right: JL Fields. The pair have co-authored The Main Street Vegan Academy Cookbook: Over 100 Plant-Sourced Recipes Plus Practical Tips for the Healthiest, Most Compassionate You, which also includes tips and recipes from 60 graduates of the academy. In this interview Victoria and JL talk about: • How they navigated the writing process, considering they live in different cities • Why they chose an independent publisher and tips on how to pitch a book • The benefits of being an author to their respective businesses • The marketing and promotional strategies they use to sell their books • Their honest experiences of working with previous publishers • How Victoria got endorsements from Ellen DeGeneres and Bill Clinton, plus tips on how to secure high-profile people to praise your book or write a foreword • How JL dealt with unscrupulous people copying her work and publishing it as their own on Amazon • And much more Visit Main Street Vegan Academy Visit JLGoesVegan.com Check out books by Victoria Moran on Amazon Check out books by JL Fields on Amazon Find out more about The Main Street Vegan Academy Cookbook Listen to Victoria Moran's podcast interview in episode 15 of Vegan Business Talk Listen to JL Fields' podcast interview in episode 11 of Vegan Business Talk Brands mentioned in vegan business news roundup: Good Dot Naturli Foods RESOURCES: My Online PR Course for Vegan Business Owners & Entrepreneurs: Vegans in the Limelight My book Vegan Ventures: Start and Grow an Ethical Business Follow Vegan Business Media on: Facebook   Twitter  Instagram  Connect with me personally at: Facebook  Twitter  LinkedIn
