Self-compassion is a superpower. Studies show self-compassion increases generosity, productivity, and exercise in those who practice it. Mindfulness and self-compassion are rarely seen as integral to our work as physicians and other healthcare providers, but they should be.  Today's special guest is Dr. Shauna Shapiro, the author of Good Morning I Love You: Mindfulness + Self-Compassion Practices to Rewire Your Brain for Calm, Clarity and Joy. Neuroplasticity means that we have the capacity to change, rewire, and cultivate self compassion, mindfulness, clarity and calm. I didn't discover these helpful, productive and performance-enhancing practices until I was 48.  Dr. Shapiro reminds us that it's never too late. To begin or begin again. The impact of practicing self-compassion ripples out to everyone whose lives we touch. As physicians, this is a tremendous underutilized tool. Good Morning, I Love You, Violet, is a new children's book about self-compassion that will be released on October 23, 2023. As a pediatrician, I am delighted. I know of very few if any children's books teach self-compassion. This book is an opportunity for our kids to begin well and to learn how a simple gesture of self-care can become as commonplace as brushing your teeth.  If you want to integrate more self-compassion and mindfulness into your life, join me for coaching and/or a retreat to learn how.  Its uncomfortable to start but there are many accessible and fun ways to finally make it happen.  Blending coaching, mindfulness, self-compassion, yoga, nature and nourishment together at a Pause and Presence retreat is the secret sauce to lasting change in this arena.  Coaching: Mindful Coaching — Pause and Presence Retreats: Mindful Coaching, Yoga & Culinary Medicine CME Retreats — Pause and Presence I can't wait to share Good Morning, I Love You Violet with all those in my life who have children. I have preordered the book for myself and each of my neices and nephews. There is no greater gift to the next generation's health, happiness, productivity, and generosity than practicing self-compassion If you would like to contribute to the Children's Compassion Project, which is raising funds to donate Good Morning, I Love You Violet to children's hospitals, libraries and elementary schools in the US, Dr. Shapiro and I would be most grateful. If you want an inspiring, nurturing and eye-opening speaker on growing self compassion and mindfulness in women physicians (or other high achievers), reach out to Jessie.https://www.jessiemahoneymd.com/speaking.  *Nothing in this episode is medical advice.

In this heartfelt conversation, Julia is joined by Brendan Cox, a passionate campaigner and activist dedicated to counter-terrorism and community cohesion. Brendan is also the father of two bereaved children, a role he assumed tragically after the murder of his wife, MP Jo Cox, in 2016. From listening to this conversation, you'll quickly discover Brendan's emotional thoughtfulness and intelligence as he shares his journey, providing insights on several crucial aspects of life: KEY DISCUSSION POINTS:  The Unfixable Tragedy: Brendan opens up about the profound impact of Jo's death and how he grappled with the painful realization that this tragedy was unfixable. It forced him to confront the limits of his power and ultimately surrender to them. A Clear Purpose: Amid the complexity and trauma, the need to focus on his children gave Brendan a clear sense of purpose and meaning in his life. This newfound clarity motivated him to strive to be "a better dad every day." Embracing the Unvarnished Truth: Brendan learned that, for himself and his children, honesty, no matter how difficult, was far better than a lie or false protection. This unwavering trust they built in one another prevented them from being manipulated by external forces providing conflicting information. Living Life to the Fullest: Brendan shares his philosophy of living life to the full, a commitment to "burning the candle at both ends and sort of throwing ourselves into adventures." This approach infused him with the energy to not only persevere but to find joy, adventure, and inspiration in his role as a parent. The Power of Community: The Cox family found solace and strength in their community. Being known by neighbors, feeling safe, and fostering connections played a vital role in their healing and growth. Brendan also reflects on the evidence of how a community can act as a safeguard against mental illness, violence, and extremism. A Call to Connect: As you listen to this conversation, you may find ideas to strengthen your connection to your community and the thought-provoking question: "Out of 10, how connected do I feel?" In the face of adversity and loss, Brendan Cox's story is a testament to the power of embracing tragedy, finding support in community, and nurturing compassion. How did the concept of ‘original sin' get into the bible if Jesus never taught it? Where else did the Bible get it right, and where has it been misinterpreted or manipulated? In this podcast, I'm joined by Bob Peck who is an author and scholar of not only Christianity, but many spiritual traditions. In this episode, we dive into the manipulative concept of ‘original sin', the beautiful and true teachings of Yeshua, and how to integrate the wisdom of Jesus for an updated model of spirituality free of the conditioning of ‘Empire'. In Bob's book “Original Sin Is A Lie” he tells the story of Jesus as a deeply profound teacher of Love and Unity. The concept of original sin that has dominated the last few millennia is a doctrine invented by Augustine of Hippo over three hundred years later. Bob Peck is a festival award-winning filmmaker, author, lawnmower, meditator, and a spiritual student of Christ, Krishna, the Buddha, and Paramahansa Yogananda. With bachelor's degrees in Religious Studies & Radio-TV-Film from the University of Texas, he has made ‘conscious films'—spiritual & advocacy documentaries—since graduating in 2011. He's also a Kriya Yoga practitioner through KYI and a certified mindfulness & meditation teacher. He's also one of the pod leaders pushing forward these concepts of mindfulness at Meta. For many people friendship can be as anxiety educing as it is enjoyable and fulfilling. Every friendship comes with its ebbs and flows. For some of us, friendship is sacred and the expectations for a long term commitment are set high. For others, friendship is fluid with light attachment. Regardless, friendship has the power to leave a long lasting impact to our benefit or detriment, making each relationship potentially high-stakes. But are we powerless to decide the outcome, or is it possible to dictate our experiences? In this episode Justin sits down with his close friend and fellow Life Consultant Marcus Miller. Marcus and Justin discuss the seasonal changes that friendships go through. They explore the ways some friends are short term, while others last a lifetime, and how each friendship, no matter how messy it gets, has the potential to leave the impact of an important lesson or love that is worth holding on to. If you're wanting to learn how get the most out of friendships, this episode will leave you with important ideas on how to process the best and worst of each relationship, while holding boundaries and keeping an open mind.  Also, check out The Compassion Project at https://justinandabi.com/courses/the-compassion-project/ to learn how to love yourself and others through the power of compassion!

Trigger warning: Vincent's story is a difficult, painful, and traumatic one that involves several tales of violence, crime, and drug abuse. Please be warned that these episodes contain potentially triggering content. In this podcast, Vincent picks up where he left off in Part 1. He describes a week-long crime spree he went on when he was 15. As he fought sentencing and was holed up in Oakland juvenile hall, he got some visits. First, his sister and her baby came. Then, Vincent's mom visited him. Initially, Vincent was upset. But then he allowed her to share her side of everything that had happened. She told her son that she was broken, that she had trusted her husband (Vincent's dad) and he had abused her. He didn't believe her, but a guard got the police report from that day, and for the first time, Vincent understood what happened. But he couldn't let go of guilt-tripping his mom. Many years later, still not able to move on from that emotion, his mom put her foot down. She was ill and he realized that there was no one to take care of her. This kicked off a spiritual journey for Vincent. That was seven years ago, and he and his mom are tight today. He says his whole life story, which you've been hearing and reading about, played a part in his starting Urban Compassion Project. If you missed Part 1, please go back and listen. Trigger warning: We're extremely grateful to Vincent for sharing his life story. But it's a difficult, painful, and traumatic story that involves several tales of violence and abuse against women and children. Please be warned that these episodes with Vincent contain potentially triggering content. Vincent Ray Williams's ancestors on both sides moved to the Bay Area for a better life. In this podcast, we get to know Vincent, the founder and CEO of Urban Compassion Project, a nonprofit "committed to the health, welfare, and empowerment of the unhoused." His dad was Black and from the South; Vincent's mom is Puerto Rican. His dad was a Marine vet who brought trauma home with him and succumbed to the crack epidemic in the 1980s. Vincent never knew him. Vincent's mother also suffered from drug addiction. The couple met in Oakland and had Vincent's older brother. Eleven months later, in 1987, they had their second son: Vincent. His parents weren't only addicted; they also sold drugs. Big time. An Oakland poet named Hershey Hill joined us by coincidence the day we recorded with Vincent. During the recording, Hershey asks Vincent if he speaks Spanish. He shares that, in fact, it's his first language, but, as he explains in the podcast, there's some trauma that comes along with that. His father had physically abused his mom so badly that she asked CPS to come and take Vincent and his brother. Now in a foster home, the two boys would be beaten and locked in a closet for speaking their native tongue. The situation was bad enough that Vincent ran away at age 8. The police handed him over to CPS and CPS put him in a group home. He thought he had escaped the nightmarishness, but it turned out to be a facade. More physical abuse ensued, and so Vincent ran away from the group home. He'd do his best to alert teachers or even the police to what was happening, but to no avail. Because he was so often in trouble at school, Vincent didn't have many friends. Despite all this, he graduated from high school in Oakland. At this point in the conversation, Vincent takes us back to when he was 9 years old and started doing and selling drugs. Between the streets of San Francisco and the streets of his hometown of Oakland, he was also selling himself. He also started committing crimes. Eventually, Vincent reconnected with brother, Willie. Around 2010, Willie inspired him to try Narcotics Anonymous and it worked. After a relapse, Vincent has been sober for more than nine years. We end Part 1 with Vincent sharing what it was like living and walking around the streets of Oakland and San Francisco before he got clean. Photography by Michelle Kilfeather

Dr Julian Abel is a recently retired consultant in palliative care, former Vice President of Public Health Palliative Care International, and co-author with Lindsay Clarke of The Compassion Project: A Case for Hope and Humankindness from the Town that Beat Loneliness. From childhood Julian has tried to seek out what he can do that is “meaningful and helpful.” Going into healthcare was a direct expression of that. When he first entered medicine he discovered that it had a pronounced hierarchy. “The patient was nowhere near the top.” After a spell studying Chinese medicine and cranial osteopathy, he became a palliative care consultant in Weston-super-Mare within a service that covered hospice, community and hospitals. He became particularly interested in the community dimension of this because he came to understand that “the thing that makes the biggest difference is not the professional support but the love, laughter and friendship.” He says that it is deeply embedded in our nervous system: “we have a prosocial nervous system.” Julian's book The Compassion Project is largely based on the Compassion Frome Model initiated by Dr Helen Kingston and Jenny Hartnoll, and which Julian helped to lead. It spun out of a paper initiated by Helen. Julian supported the paper with some statistics, which included that emergency admissions in Frome had decreased by 14% whilst in the rest of Somerset they had risen by 29%. It was clear that they were onto something. Up until this point no-one had come across an intervention that would reduce population emergency admissions. The team decided that they need to ‘go public' and explain the building blocks of what they were doing and the benefits. Julian co-authored an article in Resurgence magazine, that was reported in the Guardian. Someone read the publicity and approached the Frome team concerning the possibility of writing a book. The Compassionate Frome model provides a means of connecting lonely and isolated patients with the plethora of activities that are going on in the community. The friendships brokered by Compassionate Frome create mental wellbeing which, via the mind-body connection, is reflected in physical wellbeing. Community connectors and health connectors play a key role in the Frome model. There are around 700 of the former (in a population of 28,000). The role of the community connectors is, by reference to a web directory, to signpost people to activities in the community that might be of interest. Julian the conversations that each connector has as a “little explosion of compassion in the community.” The health connectors are fewer in number and help people gain clarity on what is important to them and what they need when they are not in touch with these things. They are trained in motivational interviewing. His son Bewick has taken compassionate thinking into his primary school, located in a hard-pressed community. The first thing he did was help children recognise and name their emotions. And then they talked about which ones were beneficial to school life and which ones were harmful. More recently they have introduced a morning check-in, where they ask one another how they are, and if there is anything they can do to make it better. In time the children became happier and more connected and educational attainment improved dramatically. Julian feels that one of the challenges of the UK education system is that many of the ministers and civil servants are emotionally inarticulate themselves. Julian has formed an organisation Compassionate Communities UK (you can find it on the web at compassionate-communities.co.uk). It is focused on sharing, developing expertise, and education. Some of its work is professional facing and some is public facing. Julian's podcast ‘Survival of the Kindest' is also part of it. Julian is looking to develop expertise around community sources of support for trauma. “If you just rely on professional services, it's never going to...

Ola Mamas, we are back this week with our very last episode in our Covid Compassion Project series with an episode that will hit home for many of you. Yes, it talks about self-care. I know we discuss that on the show in copious amount every single episode, but today's episode is special because it talks about self-care during change, being compassionate toward yourself, and all of the hard stuff, the icky stuff we know we meed to do because its good for us and our sanity, but never get around to doing. Joining us on the podcast today is Dr. Leah Katz, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist practicing in Portland, Oregon. Originally from New York, she completed her doctorate training at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology. While living in New York, Dr. Katz worked at a community clinic where she led several groups, treated individuals and couples in therapy, and taught a course in Health Psychology at Stern College for Women. We deal with change every single day - some big, some small, and some of it, life-changing. Well, Mama, I think it is safe to say that 2020 has been the year of colossal upheaval and change. And you know what, as moms, we are built for change. We are built for colossal upheaval every single day, from the time we become pregnant, until our littles are all grown up. Being a mom changes you in so many ways, but all for the better. However, how often do we embrace that change with compassion, with kindness, with wholehearted surrender? So often, our desires shift, our life shifts, our goals shift. Everything we once knew to be dear changes. Right now is no different. Mama, we always pressure ourselves to do more, be more every single day. We juggle it all round the clock, it just never stops. But one thing is for certain, if you are not whole, if you are not healthy (emotionally, mentally, and physically), everything else will cease to exist. You are needed. You are human first. Right now, our homes are not only where we eat, sleep, breathe and live. They are also our offices, our schools, our space of 24/7 coexistence with our families. And I don't know about you, but as much as I love my family to pieces, this mama needs her sanity. And that is in the form of daily self-care. Now I know, you're likely thinking, "Sabrina I don't have time to paint my nails and take a lavender salt bath." And that is okay. That is one part of self-care. The self-care Dr. Leah and myself talk about on the show is one where we get sustenance through periods of change, one that grounds us, mothers us, and supports us every single day. As moms, the first thing we let go of is taking care of ourselves. This looks like reheating the same cup of coffee 5x a day, eating crumbs or leftovers, reshuffling "our" plans over that of our partners' and children. Self-care in this context is literally stepping outside for 10 minutes and taking a deep breath. It could mean reading 10 pages of a book you love everyday. It could mean waking up an hour earlier than your family so you can get some movement in your day or meditation or whatever it is that anchors you and fuels you. Self-care is what will set you up for success during times of massive change. And change is constant, amirite?! Self care is also being accepting of yourself, surrendering to your day, to the moment. You do not have to save the world in a day, Mama. I repeat, you do not need to save the world every single day. You just need to save yourself and your family first, and that means putting on your oxygen mask first. Here are some of the things we talk about today: - Leading your children by example, and that starts with self-care. They watch everything - what you say, do, who you are. Your actions matter, Mama. Teach your kids to take care of themselves and nourish themselves by doing so for yourself. - Fuel your mind, body, and soul every single day. This will look different everyday,

Hey Mamas, another week, another day, but hello May! Our Covid Compassion Project series is still going strong and today we have a juicy, and much, much needed episode to help you with all things business and learning to adapt and pivot during these interesting times. We always hear the saying in business and life, "prepare for impact," but how often do we actually do so? Today's episode features Emily Reagan who is a mom of four, an air force wife, a digital marketing consultant and founder of vacrashcourse.com (http://vacrashcourse.com/). She has a background in journalism and electronic media. As a scrappy military wife who has moved every two years, Emily has worked in various jobs related to public relations, marketing, sports media relations, journalism, and video production. Finally her random skillset has come together as a freelancer “VA” (virtual assistant), where she helps creative entrepreneurs take their talents online, grow their social media presence and build their sales funnels. She quickly booked out and didn't like turning down clients, so she trained her smart military spouse and mom friends to learn digital media tech skills and take on clients as their own. She calls her Digital Media VA Crash Course graduates “unicorn VAs” because they have all the resourceful qualities, online insight and implementation skills that online business owners are looking to hire first... Aka that total magical package. In today's episode, Sabrina and Emily talk about all things business, how to adapt, and of course how to prepare for impact. For many of us who are in business or who are considering starting an online business during a time of crisis, today's episode will shake you up and give you the encouragement and boost you need to jump feet first, all-in. So... without further adieu, here are our top takeaways from today's episode which we know will be highly valuable for all those tuning in or reading in: 1. Physical distancing, not social distancing. Why? Because now more than ever, we need community, we need connection. So yes, we are physically distant during this time, but socially more present than ever. Plug into online communities, podcasts. Have a porchside conversation with a friend. Better yet, mastermind with your biz besties and get the wheels in your biz turning, which brings us to our main point... 2. Adapt and pivot. Don't shut down. We repeat, do not freeze. Mamas, we know firsthand how it feels to have all this doubt and uncertainty swirling around when faced with crisis, but isn't that why we exist? Navigating a crisis is literally a mom superpower; we do this with our littles every single day. We do the damn juggle all day, everyday. Right now isn't so different. Use that fuel to launch your business, to make that side hustle your full time gig. To not go back to corporate. To forge your own path. For those of you in businesses that are a bit more brick and mortar, have a sit down meeting with yourself (and your team if you have one), and ask yourselves how you can pivot. What can you offer en masse at an accessible price that still brings home the income sustainably? Can you do online classes, courses, consultations, porch side deliveries? The world is literally your canvas right now. This is the much needed pivot many of us needed, the reset we were longing for (even if the circumstances are not ideal), the time we craved to work on our businesses and side hustles, the opportunity to create the life we desire, the type of "normal" we have the power to curate and create once things open up and everything is functional again. One thing is for certain, things will never go back to "normal,

Welcome, Mama, to the next six weeks otherwise known as the COVID Compassion Project where we do a deep dive into "how" to juggle life and motherhood during these difficult times. Our second episode in this special series features the incredibly stylish, savvy, and creative, Maria Swann — a professional wardrobe organizer and style branding strategist. She is also a mother and wife in a fun, blended family and created her business for the quintessential busy women who just want to look good and feel good, so they can show up powerfully no matter where they go. In her years of working in corporate America and in conversation with many clients, she realized there were women who lacked confidence because of how they looked. Maria knows and believes that women who feel good about themselves are more confident — they are the ones who ask for raises, speak up in meetings, negotiate the deals, and show up in life ready for whatever comes, Instead of hiding in a corner tugging at a top that doesn't fit well. In today's episode, Sabrina and Maria chat about all things style, looking good and feeling good, and how everything in our lives gets so much better when we feel good about ourselves! Yes, Mama, you heard that correct! We know you're currently at home juggling even more than you normally would (the everyday juggle was hard enough as it is). We see you donning the multiple capes and hats between online client meetings, homework with the kiddos, and lunch, dishes, laundry, repeat! You take care of everyone else and your own needs and style go out of style, right? Just because we are living through a pandemic at the moment doesn't mean we cannot and should not feel good about ourselves. You are beautiful and enough, in the skin and body you currently have! So how can you show up a bit differently for yourself? How can you revel in the body you currently have, how can you feel more at home in your own skin? Maria's overall philosophy: Simplify to amplify! Own your style! Make minor adjustments in your daily routine such as taking a little extra time to go through your skincare routine… Take that extra time to do your hair (even if that is the only thing you do in the morning), and gosh, have your juice/coffee/morning fuel before you go in Mama mode for the rest of the day! Those little tweaks make a massive difference! Too sick of an overcrowded wardrobe and don't want to shop for new things at the moment? No problem! Gather the family for a mini fashion show and choose your top 5 outfits for a casual - just-hanging-out-but-still-business look (no pj's or yoga pants allowed for this one!) Create a capsule wardrobe! Sure you might be all comfy cozy in those pjs, but having a quick top or dress to slip on will uplift your mood instantly! You'll show up like you mean it even more online and offline It's all about the simple things! Are you hanging on to outfits that no longer fit you? Ask yourself why? This time is all about growth and healing on so many levels. Perhaps you hang onto old outfits because they remind you of a happier, fun time in your life — we hear ya, Mama. But hanging on to old stuff that no longer fits is no fun — mentally, emotionally, and of course, literally. Instead, offer your gently used items to another friend or loved one or donate them in a fellow mama or biz clothing group! You never know whose day they might brighten. Identify your style! Is is always having accessories such as jewelry? Or is it hats? Perhaps it's scarves or a simple shirt dress? Figure out what your unique go-to style is and curate your wardrobe around that! Style is forever.

We are back, Mamas and we are back with a special series of episodes dedicated to helping you thrive during this global pause. It's been almost a month since we have been wearing all the hats, full-dang-time! Welcome to the next six weeks otherwise known as the COVID Compassion Project where we do a deep dive into "how" to juggle life and motherhood during these difficult times. Our first episode features Krista Lockwood, a decluttering specialist who teaches and empowers moms to create a minimalistic lifestyle so they can shift the focus off of the stuff in their home and onto the people inside it. Currently, as a global collective we have been thrust into a new normal which involves homeschooling, parenting, working - all in the same environment, day in and day out. Virtual hangouts and conferences, physical distancing (for now), and of course the very real grocery store lineups outside, and the TP shortage (or should we say TP mindset?) We have been forced to adapt, evolve, and shift the way we live our life, and Mamas, we at YGTMama are leaning in full force. And when you really think about it, as mamas, we are built for this. We are equipped for pivoting on the fly! Krista and her family of five moved cross country from Alaska to Florida with nothing else but 3 suitcases that held all of their family belongings. It was this move that jumpstarted her love for minimalism and decluttering. The more she decluttered, the simpler her life became. She regained control of her time, energy, and wellbeing. Her family spent more time together with each other versus constantly fielding all of the things strewn across the house. Sabrina and Krista discuss the energetics behind having a cluttered home and a cluttered life and mind. True story, Mamas, while we cannot control the overflow of laundry, we can certainly spend some moments each day releasing the stuff we no longer need. And there is no perfect time than the present to do so. To get clarity on what you have, how much you have, and why you continue to hang onto it. In a time where many of us are hoarding things, emotions, and anything else out of safety, ask yourself how you can evaluate everything with a discerning eye and release it with kindness and gratitude. Trust that you have more than enough and that you will continue to be supported. Consider this time as a cocoon and mama metamorphosis. Start laying the groundwork for what you want your life to feel like and how you want to feel once this situation resolves itself. Choose to show up for yourself and get started one outfit, one room, and one piece of furniture at a time. These projects do not need to be massive, nobody expects you to declutter like a Love it or List it marathoner. They can be a small-one-shelf-or-drawer a day project. Before you know it, you will feel so much lighter mentally and emotionally. Choose to simplify your life and trust that you will always have exactly what you need to carry you through! Love yourself through this chaos and truly lean into what will give you room to breathe, 'cause Mama you've totally got this! Suffering and sadness are an unavoidable part of the human experience. The gift of suffering is that it illuminates humanity in a unique and special way. Although no one can truly understand the full suffering of another, or the impact of that suffering, they can accept our journey, stand with us, and learn to hold space for our process. In part three of this series we dive into Justin’s perspective and how he learned to stay healthy while loving someone in a rough spot. He shares how he knew Abi would be sick when he met her, yet chose to marry her knowing that it would affect his life. He talks about his own season of physical pain and sickness and how that paved the way for a greater measure of empathy and sacrificial love for Abi. Along with all of that, Justin and Abi discuss how to extract the gifts from within suffering, why we need more than one supportive source, how to take care of our own heart when someone we love is suffering, and letting go of over-responsibility. We have two options when we go through hard things; see the pain as an invitation into wholeness, or get stuck in hopelessness, fear, and heart ache. For part two of this four part series, Justin and Abi discuss the revelations Abi had through the last year of sickness. Abi’s health issues forced her into a world of deeper vulnerability, and gave space for grief to surface that produced healing in places she’s felt orphaned and alone. They share how allowing themselves to grieve the wrongs of the past didn’t mean they wallowed in their pain, but rather gave themselves the comfort that their souls had desperately needed so that they could truly move forward. Get ready for a dose of hope as Abi and Justin continue to share the powerful lessons they’ve gathered from enduring and overcoming suffering within their own lives.
