Former tech executive LLance Kezner shares how he turned his passion for home cooking into Millie's Sipping Broth, a specialty food brand offering savory, health-conscious beverages in tea bag form. LLance discusses his journey from corporate leadership to entrepreneurship, the challenges of scaling a food business, and the milestone of landing his award-winning product on Walmart shelves nationwide. Show Notes Page: https://www.thehowofbusiness.com/555-llance-kezner-kitchen-to-shelf/ In this episode, LLance Kesner, a former tech executive turned food entrepreneur, shares his journey from the corporate world to launching Millie's Sipping Broth, a specialty food brand that is now available in Walmart stores nationwide. LLance discusses how he and his wife, Lori, took a simple idea—creating a healthier, more convenient alternative to bouillon cubes—and turned it into an innovative product that combines the comfort of broth with the convenience of tea bags. LLance walks us through the early days of developing the product in their kitchen, validating demand at Seattle's Pike Place Market, and navigating the complex world of food manufacturing and retail. He also shares the challenges of scaling, including finding the right co-packer, securing funding, and ultimately winning Walmart's highly competitive “Golden Ticket” opportunity. Key Takeaways: Start fast, learn fast: LLance emphasizes the importance of getting a product to market quickly and refining based on real customer feedback. “Don't waste any time, don't overthink it. Really focus on the simplest application of your product and get it in front of people who might buy it.” Solve a real problem: Millie's Sipping Broth fills a gap in the beverage market—offering a savory, low-calorie alternative to coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. “We were selling broth in the middle of summer, in 100-degree heat, and people were buying it. That's when we knew we had something special.” Scaling smartly: LLance explains why finding the right retail partners at the right time is crucial and how their online success, including being featured by Weight Watchers International, helped prepare them for mass distribution. Now available in over 2,500 Walmart locations, Millie's Sipping Broth is a testament to the power of persistence, product-market fit, and strategic partnerships. “I have two choices every day when I get up—one is happy, one is unhappy. I don't like unhappy. So, I try to make the best of every single day.” Florine Mark  Denise talks to Florine Mark, a lover of Detroit, entrepreneur and philanthropist who brought Weight Watchers (WW) to Michigan after she tried the program, having always struggled with her weight. After being denied a bank loan because she was a woman, she convinced WW with her positive attitude and self-belief to make her a loan of $5,000 to start her business. She went on to be the largest franchise holder expanding her business in the United States, Mexico and Canada—worth billions.  Although she never graduated from college, she's most proud to have put all her sisters, her own children and nieces and nephews through college. She may have grown up poor, but she was always loved and never criticized at home for being fat. The kids at school, however, were not so kind.  What are her secrets to overcoming adversity? Be good to yourself. Exercise. Eat well. Spend time with friends and loved ones. Thank people. Her methods for dealing with life's challenges are highly effective, even if simple. Always affirm the positive. She loves to have a good cry when she feels like it (maybe beat up a pillow) and then moves on!  She's equally devoted to her family and to everything she sets her mind to. So now that she's in her 80's, enjoying life every day, she's got a podcast, sits on many boards and spends time with her family. Florine tells a wonderful, heartwarming story of her favorite Detroit moment.  It's no wonder she's written a book, Talk to the Mirror: Feel Great About Yourself Each and Every Day, which you can find wherever books are sold.  ***  Florine Mark is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, author and motivational speaker. She was the largest Weight Watchers International franchise holder, the first to bring the program to Michigan, expanding in the Midwest, Mexico, and Canada. Having recently sold her empire, she continues to serve as a Weight Watchers Ambassador. In 2001, she was elected to the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. She has served on many Boards and was listed among the “100 Most Influential Women in Detroit” by Crain's Detroit Business and one of the “50 Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World.” Florine was the first female recipient of the Neil Shine Lifetime Achievement Award. She generously shares her time and experience with many organizations including Children's Hospital of Michigan, Business Leaders of Michigan and Detroit Regional Chamber. Although she never graduated from college, she holds several honorary degrees for her remarkable service to society.  LISTEN to her show, Today's Takeaway with Florine Mark, wherever you get your podcasts.  Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years.  As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world.  Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents.  FOLLOW DENISE @thedeniseilitchshow  TO LEARN MORE about all our inspiring podcasts visit https://www.lifestough.com/.

You want to it because it feels so good to do it One of the things that is so critical to self care and to really understanding the heart is is looking at the science behind the fact we are not this separate thing. Scientists like to break us into two in the healthcare world. We're not a brain and a body. We're not a brain and emotions and a body. We are all one integrated human that evolved to this place in order to have emotions for a purpose and we have you know we our body tell it talks to us all of the time Figure out the trigger that leads to bad behavior and then replace the behavior to a new and more positive behavior. You may have a twinkling of an idea for your topic for your signature talk, keynote, or TEDx talk, but perhaps you’re not sure where to go from there. How can you take your idea, expand upon it, and make it your own? In this on-air coaching call, you’ll hear the key questions I ask my clients to help find their core message, including the one question that tends to be the most useful. My guest, Nettye Johnson, a certified health educator and coach, sent me a lovely email after I posted in the Speaking Your Brand Facebook group asking for on-air coaching call guests. (A great reason to join the group and check in every few days! Not a member? It’s free. Go to https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/join or text SPEAKING to 444-999.) She wrote to me: “The idea I want to share goes against the popular position that we are all the same, and should be considered and treated equally. When we try not to see differences in people we actually hinder progress because differences beg for understanding and equitable action - not equal action. “The root of this is a short 5-minute talk I did shortly after the Alton Sterling killing in my town 2 years ago. I was at a speaker training session about to have my prepared talk on faith-based fitness (my professional niche) coached in a small group. My heart was so heavy, that morning I went with my heart and instead spoke on race relations to a group of white women - trying to get us all to see the different people and perspectives of this divisive issue, and how leaning into differences can help. A video of it is at https://youtu.be/C-HGr8UDvWs.” I watched the video and was impressed by Nettye’s passion, poise, presence, and empathy, so I invited her to come on the podcast to talk about this idea of “the value of labels” or “one size doesn’t and can’t fit all” and how that can be turned into a signature talk or TEDx talk. In this on-air coaching call, you’ll hear the questions I ask and how, through digging deeper and reflecting back, we get to the root of her idea - and from there the seed of the talk can grow. You’ll also hear the key question I ask my clients to help get to the root of their core message, which I encourage you to ask yourself and journal about or, even better, talk to someone about There’s tremendous value in hearing your ideas spoken out loud, which is why coaching can be so powerful. Need a coach to help you make your idea your own and turn it into a signature talk, keynote, or TEDx talk? That’s what we love to do! Review our coaching packages and schedule a consultation call with us at https://www.speakingyourbrand.com/contact. About My Guest: Nettye Johnson is a wife, mom, author, speaker, trainer, certified health educator and health coach. Wholeheartedly believing apart from God we can do nothing, Nettye combined health education and coaching knowledge with 25 years of Christian education study and experience and founded Nettye Johnson Faith and Fitness Services LLC, (NJFFS), that provides curated holistic solutions that help women find balance and live well.    Nettye began her career in technology as a software engineer for Eastman Kodak. Career changes to IT Training for Jacobs Engineering and Corporate Training for Weight Watchers International, shifted her focus from programs to people, and helped Nettye find her voice and passion in speaking and teaching. During her decade tenure with the nation’s leading weight loss company, Nettye’s work in training, business development, and operations management on local, state and national levels impacted thousands. In this work, she was struck by the decline of health, wellness, and wholeness in our nation, moved by African-American health disparities and focused to develop and deliver holistic education, resources and support to effectively address this problem. This week’s episode focuses on leadership and having an attitude of gratitude. My guest, Cindy Elkins, joins me to share how her experiences at Genentech and as a board member of Weight Watchers International, have shaped her perspective on life. Cindy acknowledges she didn’t always bring her whole self to work, but during her journey, she did create environments where people could flourish within corporate communities. Binding people together without using functional, structural strategies is what makes Cindy’s cultural leadership qualities a powerful asset in life and in business.   Key Takeaways: [3:14] What does the phrase ‘bring your whole self to work’ mean to Cindy? [7:29] Cindy is acutely aware of what it feels like when someone doesn’t feel safe to bring their whole self to work. [12:37] Sometimes people in senior roles need to be vulnerable. [21:57] How Cindy came to be on the board at Weight Watchers. [27:55] The body image differences between men and women. [37:11] Practical strategies to link the corporate world to a world fueled by gratitude. [49:44] Intangible cultural leadership attributes are hard to quantify.   Resources: Mike Robbins Website Mike Robbins Podcast Mike Robbins on Facebook Mike Robbins on Twitter Cindy Elkins on LinkedIn There’s No Good Card for This, by Kelsey Crowe Option B, by Sheryl Sandberg

Question from Anthony Cioffi: I have got a somewhat off-topic question from the show. I know Mark is a fight fan. What does he think of the recent sale of the UFC for $4.2 billion?Good deal, or did they dramatically over pay? What are the odds that the UFC will eventually go public as a result of this deal? It would be fun to trade options on that name. They would probably be very volatile heading into big fight cards. Around the Block: Earnings on Friday:Virgin America.
