This week on West of Knowhere, we delve into a medley of peculiar and unexpected stories. We kick off with the intriguing news of Qatar offering a $400 million airplane to the United States as a potential temporary Air Force One. The episode takes a wild turn as we propose a reality TV concept where contestants vie for U.S. citizenship and discuss the Supreme Court's pushback on the Trump administration's immigration policies. We transition into the digital realm with a discussion on AI and copyright issues, including the unexpected firing of the U.S. Copyright Office Director. Meanwhile, in Argentina, a shocking discovery of 80 boxes of Nazi materials is unearthed in their Supreme Court's basement, leaving us pondering the past. In other news, we recount the unfortunate tale of a man killed while fighting a kangaroo, the mysterious burning of a Louisiana plantation house, and dive into the docuseries about Barney the Purple Dinosaur titled "I Love You, You Hate Me." Lastly, we explore social dilemmas with a double "Am I the Asshole" segment, debating the ethics of changing someone else's baby's diaper and the complexities of familial obligations in wedding participation. Welcome to the Juras-Sick Park-Cast podcast, the Jurassic Park podcast about Michael Crichton's 1990 novel Jurassic Park, and also not about that, too. Find the episode webpage at: Episode 60 - Almost Paradigm. In this episode, my terrific guests Matt Kelly and Matthew Milligan of the Weird Al-gorithm podcast join the show to chat with me about: PeeWee Herman and Paul Reubens, The Bicycle Thieves, Weird Al Yankovich, One Hit Thunder, Wheatus, podcasting, digging through music shops to find Weird Al albums, polkas, Yoda, MacArthur Park, Alapalooza, Off The Deep End, Bohemian Rhapsody v. Bohemian Polka, the punkrock roots of Weird Al, Green Jelly, claymation by Mark Osborne and Scott Nordlund, music videos, Dinosaurs Attack!, Barney the Dinosaur, I Love You, You Hate Me, parody choices, UHF, the Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesotra, and much more! Plus dinosaur news about: Vectipelta barretti, a new ankylosaurian dinosaur from theLower Cretaceous Wessex Formation of the Isle of Wight, UK A potentially fatal cranial pathology in a specimenof Tarchia Featuring the music of Snale https://snalerock.bandcamp.com/ Intro: Toucans. Outro: Chinese Cafe. The Text: This week's text is Almost Paradigm, spanning from pages 380 – 384. Synopsis: Hammond is uncomfortable with Malcolm's sepsis, and leaves for a walk believing that the park is under control now, and is safe. On his walk back to his bungalow, he stews over how unfit everyone he'd hired to work at Jurassic Park had been, blaming them all for its downfall – and taking no responsibility of his own. Then he hears the roar of the juvenile tyrannosaurus, and panics. Out of fear and anger, he winds up falling down a ravine, landing in a river below, with a broken ankle. It turns out the tyrannosaur roar is just a recording being broadcast over loud speakers, as Tim and Lex are playing around on the computer in the control room, and there was no danger after all. Discussions surround: Dramatic Irony, Responsibility and Safety, Considering whether or not you should, and Almost Paradise v. Almost Paradigm. Corrections: I said that Nedry didn't turn off the fences in the movie - when, of course he did. Arnold also turns off the power, but Nedry did it first. My mistake. Sorry. Side effects: May cause you to become ... weird! Find it on iTunes, on Spotify (click here!) or on Podbean (click here). Thank you! The Jura-Sick Park-cast is a part of the Spring Chickens banner of amateur intellectual properties including the Spring Chickens funny pages, Tomb of the Undead graphic novel, the Second Lapse graphic novelettes, The Infantry, and the worst of it all, the King St. Capers. Until next time! #JurassicPark #MichaelCrichton

Tommy Avallone and I go way back to the days of 94.1 WYSP in Philadelphia. Since then, he's gone on to direct I Love You, You Hate Me (2022), The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man (2018) and I Am Santa Claus (2014). As a kid, Tommy always had a camera on him and was constantly making videos with friends. We chat about how those videos were the stepping stone to a career in the world of documentaries. I know nothing about movies, so I have Tommy explain the difference between the director and producer, and his top five favorite movies. Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon, and Pandora.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Shannon Foley Martinez spent four year as an active white supremacist. In the decades since, she has applied the lessons of her own life story to helping other escape hate. She speaks at schools and in the media about the channels through which hate groups recruit the vulnerable and how best to prevent young people from becoming susceptible to them in the first place. She recently appeared in the terrific Peacock documentary I Love You, You Hate Me, a surprisingly thoughtful and insightful look at the culture of hatred directed at Barney the Purple Dinosaur in the 1990s and what it has to say about how hate spreads and festers, particularly in our own culture today. Shannon joined John for a wide-ranging discussion that included Barney, 1990s advertising, her own life story, the mainstreaming of antisemitism, and, of course, unavoidably, Ye. I Love You, You Hate Me is a limited doc series chronicling the rise and fall of Barney the Dinosaur's furious backlash — and what it says about the human need to hate. From Barney-bashing to frat parties to homicidal video games, something in American society broke into a million pieces, and it's never been put together again… or is this just who we were all along? Known for taking the ordinary—people, places, events—and finding the extraordinary within it, Tommy Avallone is an American filmmaker and the head of Double Windsor Films. His filmography retains a common emotional component throughout: heart. Prior to directing I LOVE YOU, YOU HATE ME, Whoopi Goldberg executive produced his film, Waldo on Weed, about a Philadelphia father's attempts to help his six-month-old son survive eye cancer through the use of cannabis oil. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2019 and was officially released in 2020 with rave reviews.

https://larryrifkin.net/ The Big Idea: In his compelling career memoir, Larry Rifkin, the programming executive for Connecticut Public Television for over a quarter of a century, shares his story and unique insights into the PBS system, and touches upon the many changes he has seen in the broadcasting industry over the span of his career .The So-What: Rifkin was responsible for bringing Barney & Friends to PBS. Threatened with cancellation shortly after its premiere on PBS in April, 1992, it went on to become one of the most successful children's television series in history. Without Rifkin, the phenomenon would never have occurred. In an upcoming documentary, I Love You, You Hate Me (https://deadline.com/2022/08/peacock-virtual-docfest-lineup-joe-berlinger-shadowland-rosa-parks-prince-andrew-documentaries-1235100853/), on Peacock TV, Rifkin is interviewed, as is his daughter, Leora, through whose eyes he envisioned the potential of the property. Key Messages: In his new book, No Dead Air: Career Reflections From the TV Executive Who Saved Barney the Dinosaur From Extinction (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GTRX5NL/ref=tsm_1_tp_tc), Rifkin reflects on an improbable career that spawned two groundbreaking hits, Barney & Friends and UConn Women's Basketball. Each of these properties provided the impetus for changes in the industry. The first led to much more preschool programming on television and the other catapulted women's sports onto the small screen. He can discuss: ·How he (and his 4-year-old daughter, Leora) discovered Barney and brought it to national prominence. ·How a two hundred million year old (two dinosaur years), six-foot tall (sometimes seven-feet) purple tyrannosaurus-rex with a green tummy, green spots on his back and tail, and yellow toes, came to open children's eyes to the joys of learning and discovery, to the wonders of make-believe, and to the beauty of unconditional love. ·How (and why) Barney was cancelled by PBS just after it went on the air. ·How he took women's basketball from obscurity to a national pastime, making it the most transformative local franchise on PBS. ·How being the programming executive for one state's PBS network put him in a position of managing this remarkable property while staying close to home and never working in a major media center. ·Celebrity tales about his work with Carole King, Charlton Heston, Alan Alda, Ringo, Geno Auriemma, and many others. The Source: Larry Rifkin is best known for his nearly thirty years as programming chief for Connecticut Public Television. Under his leadership, CPTV amassed over fifty Emmy Awards in the Boston/New England competition. In 2006, he was inducted into the Boston/New England Silver Circle, the regional television equivalent of a Lifetime Achievement Award. He is currently the host of American Trends (https://www.americatrendspodcast.com/) podcast, where he looks at changes in our society and our politics. Rifkin appears in the Barney Documentary, I Love You, You Hate Me (https://deadline.com/2022/08/peacock-virtual-docfest-lineup-joe-berlinger-shadowland-rosa-parks-prince-andrew-documentaries-1235100853/), on Peacock TV. His new book is No Dead Air: Career Reflections From the TV Executive Who Saved Barney the Dinosaur From Extinction (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09GTRX5NL/ref=tsm_1_tp_tc) (independently published via Amazon's KDP Books, September 21, 2021). The initial roll out of the book was in Connecticut, where he still lives, and included over twenty book talks, where he articulated his ideas passionately. A new chapter was added recently, focusing on the societal impact of Barney. Learn more at larryrifkin.net (https://larryrifkin.net/). I'd be happy to arrange a bylined article, a review copy of his new book, and schedule an interview with Larry Rifkin.

We are a happy family on today's episode as we focus on the Peacock original documentary I Love You, You Hate Me about, that's right, Barney the purple dinosaur. Baylor bud and now acclaimed documentary filmmaker, Chris Charles Scott (Class Action Park), joins Nathan to discuss the impact that this children's series made, for better and for worse, on culture and our desire to hate on things that are pure. Chris provides an amazing insider look into how Hollywood and the documentary making process works, as well as discussing why he loves Las Vegas (and Con Air) so much and his earliest memories of the Internet. Make sure to listen to the whole episode to discover what Nathan's embarrassing AOL screen name was.

We had to think outside the box this week in order to find a new movie to review. We ended up settling on I Love You, You Hate Me the new documentary streaming on Peacock about the Barney phenomenon in the 1990's. Then in the second half of the show the randomizer tasked us with reviewing Robin Williams and Kurt Russell in The Best of Times from 1986. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/matthew-ulrich/message
Tommy Avallone returns to talk Barney! His new documentary “I Love You, You Hate Me” is streaming now on Peacock, and looks at the cultural hate and backlash that surrounded the popular purple dinosaur almost from his first introduction to the world. Tommy chronicles the creation of Barney, his rise and fall in popularity, and the hate the sprang up around him. He explains how Barney's cultural phenomenon status impacted Bob West who voiced Barney and actor David Joyner who physically played the purple dinosaur in the giant costume. Tommy talks about the “Barney Curse” that plagued creator Sheryl Leach's family, and shares some of the dark urban legends surrounding Barney involving drug cartels and serial killers. Or so the New York Times would have you believe. Stigall is part of a national tour stopping this week in Philadelphia with his Salem Media colleagues. The Times is concerned about the growing influence of their employer Salem Media Group. Stigall slices and dices. Steve Moore disabuses the ice cream licking husk of our economy being "strong as hell." Jonathan Emord, author of "The Authoritarians" returns to dicuss his continued concerns for the power of an administrative state over our lives. And a fascinating documentary now streaming on Peacock called "I Love You, You Hate Me." Director and friend of Stigall's Tommy Avalone discusses the intrigue behind the most beloved and hated children's TV show in history and what it says about the culture.
In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds Podcast, we interview director Tommy Avallone of the 'I Love You, You Hate Me' docuseries currently streaming on Peacock TV. I Love You, You Hate Me unpacks how a children's character who stood for inclusion, understanding, and kindness birthed a movement of anger and criticism that threatened the show, its creators, and their futures. As it spotlights the beginnings of modern-day hate culture, this documentary traces the creation of the character and how it took a toll on the people closest to it, examining the surprising and lingering impact the ‘Big Purple Dinosaur' left on American society. What do you get when you cross the world's most famous singing preschool dinosaur with the birth of the internet? A rabid mob of men out for purple blood. Just in time for settling into your couch this fall, streaming services are rolling out new shows and resurrecting old favorites. The hard part about your endless options is deciding what to watch. You can start with the biggest winners out of this year's Emmys — “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” dominated drama and comedy. Or try something less known, like “Abbott Elementary,” an ABC mockumentary sitcom TV series written by Quinta Brunson about the lives of teachers working in a predominantly Black elementary school in Philadelphia. The show won three Emmys for its first season. MPR News host Angela Davis talked with the Star Tribune columnist Neal Justin about a competitive streaming world and what shows are worth a weekend binge. Are you ready to stream? Here's a list of popular shows, movies and documentaries the two think are worth your time. “Ramy” on Hulu. “Reservation Dogs” on Hulu. “Let the Right One In” on Showtime. “Interview with the Vampire” on AMC+. “Halloween Ends” in theaters and on Peacock on October 14. “I Love You, You Hate Me” on Peacock. Guest: Neal Justin is a columnist and reporter for the Star Tribune and covers the entertainment world, primarily TV and radio.
