Welcome back to the studio. This is My Day of Play, where you're taken into the real events and actions of how it happens long before the process of editing or cleaning up. Share the reality of how it really went. We begin things with director Tommy Avallone the creator of the documentary The House From. It's all about those famous homes in movies like Halloween, A Christmas Story and more. Then we'll wrap things up with actor Michael Cudlitz who is best known as Abraham from The Walking Dead and Lex Luther from Superman and Lois. This is My Day of Play. Tommy Avallone and I go way back to the days of 94.1 WYSP in Philadelphia. Since then, he's gone on to direct I Love You, You Hate Me (2022), The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man (2018) and I Am Santa Claus (2014). As a kid, Tommy always had a camera on him and was constantly making videos with friends. We chat about how those videos were the stepping stone to a career in the world of documentaries. I know nothing about movies, so I have Tommy explain the difference between the director and producer, and his top five favorite movies. Pat House is a nationally-touring comedian based out of Philadelphia. A regular performer in comedy clubs, casinos, and theaters all over the country, Pat has been a choice opener for Sebastian Maniscalco, Tom Segura, and Dan Cummins. He recorded his first album Biggest Thing in 2013, and his latest album Heard Enough Yesterday, hit #1 on the iTunes comedy charts. Both can be heard on iTunes, Amazon, and Pandora.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

An exploration of the spectacular rise and violent response to children's show character Barney the Dinosaur. This thought-provoking documentary traces Barney's grassroots beginnings, from the explosion of international Barneymania to the eventual backlash the purple dinosaur received. Using exclusive interviews and archival footage, the three-part documentary offers first-hand accounts of the Barney phenomenon from the cast and crew to its most outspoken critics. This deep dive into the nature of love and hate asks where the Barney reaction -- which started as a snarky 1990s joke but transformed into actual violence -- may have gotten society.
Tommy Avallone returns to talk Barney! His new documentary “I Love You, You Hate Me” is streaming now on Peacock, and looks at the cultural hate and backlash that surrounded the popular purple dinosaur almost from his first introduction to the world. Tommy chronicles the creation of Barney, his rise and fall in popularity, and the hate the sprang up around him. He explains how Barney's cultural phenomenon status impacted Bob West who voiced Barney and actor David Joyner who physically played the purple dinosaur in the giant costume. Tommy talks about the “Barney Curse” that plagued creator Sheryl Leach's family, and shares some of the dark urban legends surrounding Barney involving drug cartels and serial killers. In this week's episode of the Black Girl Nerds Podcast, we interview director Tommy Avallone of the 'I Love You, You Hate Me' docuseries currently streaming on Peacock TV. I Love You, You Hate Me unpacks how a children's character who stood for inclusion, understanding, and kindness birthed a movement of anger and criticism that threatened the show, its creators, and their futures. As it spotlights the beginnings of modern-day hate culture, this documentary traces the creation of the character and how it took a toll on the people closest to it, examining the surprising and lingering impact the ‘Big Purple Dinosaur' left on American society. The internet is awash in what are known as "Bill Murray stories." Murray crashing a bachelor party. Bill Murray joining a random kickball game. Bill Murray washing a stranger's dishes. Tommy Avallone traveled to two continents to find out whether these stories were true, and what they tell us about Bill Murray as well as ourselves. Avallone's 2018 film, "The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man," is a light-hearted exploration of a quirky and beloved celebrity. But it's also a meditation on life and the importance of being present.
On this episode of the Low-Budget Rebels Podcast, I sat down with the incredible documentary filmmaker Tommy Avallone to talk about his 3 doc features, his one narrative film, his process coming up with documentary ideas, movies that are hard to watch, filming Santa, talking about Bill Murray, SXSW 2018, distribution, finding the interesting character in any moment of filming, how I got on Rebel Without A Crew (again), being patient in the process, finding your take on an idea, and famous houses.Make sure to check out all of Tommy's movies I Am Santa Clause (which apparently IS on Amazon Prime and I'm just an idiot), The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man, and Waldo on Weed - along with everything else he's created in the past!IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2056650/Twitter: @TommyAvallone3Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rockhardkilla
In Episode 68 Bryan and Jason discuss takeaways from the interview with film director Tommy Avallone, mourn the loss of legal giant Ruth Bader Ginsberg, talk about Bryan's love for Zombie movies (including his recent favorite Train to Busan), and preview next week's interview with director Andrew Cohn, whose film The Last Shift, starring Richard Jenkins, Shane Paul McGuie, and Ed O'Neil, hits theaters on September 25.
Tommy Avallone is an LA-based director, producer, and actor, whose documentaries include I Am Santa Claus (2014), The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Madman (2018)(available on Netflix), and Waldo on Weed (2019) which was co-produced by Whoopi Goldberg (available on Amazon Prime and for rent on all streaming platforms). It's always a treat to talk with director/producer/editor Tommy Avallone, this time via Skype due to social distancing. Waldo On Weed tells the story about Waldo James Mysterious Dwyer, a six-month old baby boy suffering from Retinoblastoma – eye cancer – in both of his eyes. Seeing their son suffer through the chemotherapy, Waldo's parents, Brian and Danielle, searched desperately to find a way to help alleviate his pain. The solution: Cannabis. Watch it on iTunes. Let's hope we all get back to work soon. I know it's a source of stress. Stay healthy and creative. I'll be offering a Commercial Directing Masterclass online soon, chalk full of tips. The Bill Murray Stories and Ghostheads director/producer Tommy Avallone discusses how he went from having zero experience directing films to getting his first of three documentaries on Netflix within six years.
Hey there, Docubuddy! YOU READY FOR A DOC FIGHT!? Last time we did this, we threw both of the Fyre Festival documentaries against each other and declared a victor. The results stunned the world. We re-visit that theme because there happens to be two documentaries referencing the fandom and experience surrounding one of our most beloved comedic actors. In a NO HOLDS BARRED viewing experience, Akil and Bob sat down and watched “Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned from a Mythical Man” by Tommy Avallone on Netflix. (Yes. That is the actual subtitle.)We PITTED it VIOLENTLY AGAINST “The Bill Murray Experience” by Sadie Katz. Viewable on Prime Video. You like self-absorbed philosophical shoe-horning in correlation to celebrity obsession? HELL YEAH! Is it all about Bill Murray or about the person? WHO KNOWS?! Do you like it when people put things in all caps? HELL YEAH YOU DO! We all got a Bill Murray movie we like. What would you do if he washed your dishes? Ate your french fries? Played tambourine in your band? Slashed your tires? Spat on your feet? Burnt down your shed? Stole pictures of your family and posted them on his Pinterest account? You’d probably love it, wouldn't you? If he had to take away any of your children, which one would you give him? You don't have a choice. Let us smash documentaries. Apologies to Tommy Avallone, Sadie Katz, and Joel Murray. Our beloved friend, documentary filmmaker Tommy Avallone is back on the show to talk about his latest film 'The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned From A Mythical Man'! This one documents the numerous Bill Murray sightings across the country, from Bill showing up at a frat party to do dishes to taking part in a couple's engagement photo shoot, and tries ot make sense of it all! We've seen the movie and we love it... so how did it come together? What is it about Bill Murray that we find so captivating? How hard was it to put this movie together? What were some of the most ridiculous 'urban legends' surrounding Bill Murray and Bill Murray sightings? What's Tommy working on next? There's tons to digest here, especially for indie filmmakers, so enjoy!Subscribe to Geekscape on iTunes!Follow Jonathan on Twitter and Instagram!Join the Geekscape Forever Facebook Group!Visit Geekscape.net for more Geekscape goodness!
