In this new episode, we journey into the world of 'Bossa Nova Noites Bahia Nights,' an album that seamlessly blends the vibrant rhythms of Brazil with the soul-stirring sounds of iconic American songwriters. We'll uncover the creative process behind this unique project, featuring an interview with producer Robert Hėbert, who masterfully guides two emerging Brazilian singers, Mari Bodas and Monique Ellen, on this captivating musical adventure. What are the three key elements Robert emphasizes in his production process? “The Brazilian meter, rhythmic meter is different than the American rhythmic meter. And as someone who's outside of this culture, I'm an American from Chicago producing in Brazil with Brazilian musicians, the last thing that I should do…is impose their meter sense of rhythm on Brazilian musicians.” – Robert Hėbert Robert's passion for music and dedication to authenticity shine through in his production, resulting in an album that is both innovative and respectful of its influences. Hey there, party people! If you were in San Diego on September 2nd, you probably felt the rhythm of samba pulsating through the air, the scent of Brazilian street food wafting around, and the joyful laughter of a community coming together. This year, there was a special guest – Global Ginga - interviewing the stars of the day! Click play and listen to the music and chats that made the day memorable. I had  the privilege of catching up with some of the festival's brightest stars. First up, we had a chat with **Saulo**, the headlining act, who couldn't hide his excitement about the festival. According to him, he doesn't have an international career.  Well, I had news for Saulo! His career is definitely international now!  He says he is a “matador de saudade,” which is symbolic for being the person who helps transport thousands of people to the thumping streets of Brazil during Carnaval. Saulo had everyone dancing and jumping! Next, I got to spend some time with the dazzling **Karen Kardasha**, a queen who commands the stage like no other! Karen gives relationship advice in her busy social media life, but at the festival, she got into the singing and dancing, and expressed appreciation for all the attendees who are shining a light on Brazilian culture. We also had the pleasure of meeting the charming **Flor Jorge**, the daughter of Seu Jorge, whose enchanting voice and vivacious spirit capture the essence of Brazil. I think we made history together.  This was Flor Jorge's debut outside of Los Angeles!  Can't wait to see what where her young career will lead! And let's not forget the electrifying **Grupo Resenha**, whose lively rhythms keeps the crowd dancing to samba beats! I had to dig a little deep to understand their beef about Los Angeles. Listen to find out why these two cities can also be at each others throats. I am also thankful for spending time with Marquinho Cavaquinho, an American who fell in love with Brazilian music and the Portuguese language decades ago. How about the crazy and fun time with Ozomatli at the Guild Theater? Brazil's Marisa Monte showered us with memories as she played music from her classic repertoire and the long-waited new album, Portas. Small Island Big Song beautiful performance at Bing Auditorium reminded us how important it is to take care of our planet and to preserve our culture. Pink Martini's night under the stars with the symphony at Frost Amphitheater was unforgettable! The show ended with their fabulous interpretation of the song "Brazil." On my new episode, I bring the spotlight to island reggae music with Kolohe Kai and more reggae sounds from around the world. Years in the making, Hazel Eyes captures Kolohe Kai's emergence in life. The album is inspired by his life passions. He explains, “From the ocean with its soothing power, to the faith that anchors my soul. From my intense desire to help others feel beautiful, to my vows to the greatest wife in the world. This album represents all of me. Every crevice of my heart was emptied into these lyrics. The journey of these past few years has been a hike to remember, filled with important lessons. I hope it inspires anyone listening to grab hold of true love and happiness.” In addition to the ten original tracks, for the first time ever Kolohe Kai includes on the album one cover song, a reggae rendition of Stevie Wonder's classic “Isn't She Lovely.” In this episode, we are going to listen to: Blame it on the Waves I Think You're Beautiful Hazel Eyes Isn't She Lovely The show continues with Wesli, a Haitian musician who unites Haitian vodoun, twoubadou and rara with reggae, Afrobeat, electronic music and more. In 2019, Wesli received a Canadian Juno Award for World Music Album of the Year. The single "Bontan Iyalélé" features AfrotroniX, a pioneer of the blend of African and electronic music. Are your feeling the great vibes? Now let's take a listen to Mista Savanna's new project, Havana Meets Kingston, Part 2. According to Afropop Worldwide, this new album released on the Cumbancha Label ( I love Cumbancha) is “an ingenious, varied and rollicking set of tunes featuring some extraordinary artists, including the legendary Jamaican rhythm section Sly and Robbie, and Cuban funk rising star Cimafunk." An epic set of 15 tracks, Havana Meets Kingston Part 2 unites the deep roots grooves of reggae, dancehall and rocksteady with the scorching soul of Cuban son, timba and salsa. The Havana Meets Kingston live project will be touring this summer in Europe and later in 2022 and early 2023 in North America. I hope you enjoy listening to this global fusion as much as I enjoyed recording it for you. One World. One Beat. Unlike many albums coming out now that have a very real time-stamp on them reflecting on the past year, Alex Cuba was determined to create an album outside of that perspective. The result? Mendó, one of Cuba's most collaborative albums to date, sounding like it just came from a party we all should be attending. The title, Mendó, is an afro Cuban word meaning substance of the soul. Music as it best accompanies us in our life transitions and helps process emotions in ways our science has yet to understand. The six guests on the album, Lila Downs, Cimafunk, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Raul Midon, Antonio Carmona and Gian Marco are all dear to Alex and showcase the talent and versatility of Latin American music to evolve while staying true to it's afro Latin heritage. Sax and Flute player, Ze Carlos Bigorna, from Brazil, brings a rich album called Yramaia, featuring top notch musicians like Maurício Einhorn, Romero Lubambo, Pretinho da Serrinha, Wilson das Neves, Laudir de Oliveira, and Banda Azimuth. What do you call someone who graduates from Berkley College of Music, stars in the soundtrack and in a role in a movie and wins a Latin Grammy for BEST NEW ARTIST? Nella! This young artist hailing from the Margarita Island of Venezuela is taking Latin music by storm with major milestones early in her career! Her tour kicks off on February 5th, 2022 at Stanford! I got to talk to Nella today and asked her a few questions. I did not know she speaks Portuguese so well! Our interview quickly became trilingual - English, Portuguese and Spanish. How fun! Here are the topics of our conversation: Tell us a little bit about your youth, growing up in Margarita, Venezuela. Did you have any tendencies towards performance? What are some of your favorite artists then and now? How do you describe your music and your stage persona? Walk us through your day at the Latin Grammys in 2019? What did you do, what emotions did you feel and did you celebrate your win that same night? You graduated from Berklee College of Music not too long ago. You became part of of the soundtrack and the movie “Everybody Knows." You won a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. What role would you like to have in Latin music or any other genre? What is next? What can the audience expect from your performance during this tour? My perception is that Nella is a pioneer. She brings her unique style fueling so much simplicity, creativity, versatility and talent! She is not afraid to question the status quo as her music intertwines various styles and rhythms with clever and meaningful lyrics. From earlier, more nostalgic songs with the influence of flamenco, to the more upbeat songs featuring mega Latin stars like Juan Luis Guerra and Pedro Capó, Nella is a handful of songs that she sings with her bare heart and soul. Her captivating stage presence can only be witnessed when standing in the same performance venue with her. There are three powerhouse women on the show today. Three-time Grammy Award winner, Angélique Kidjo, is one of the greatest artists in international music today, a creative force with thirteen albums to her name At home, in Paris, in her new home studio, she recorded her 15th album, Mother Nature, currently nominated for the 2022 Grammy. The album's central focus is the global environmental crisis, and the album's title track already has the feel of a classic. After listening, some of you might conclude that this album is packed with socially charged messages. It's impossible to not hear the call for action. Can socially or politically charged music sell? Angelique thinks that “it's about selling the story. Our human story. Everything is not beautiful. Nobody wakes up every day and everything is fine. You wake-up, you say, I'm OK. But you can't be OK every day. It is impossible. Then you are not a human being. I mean, look at Bob Marley. Bob Marley sold millions of albums. And all of his songs were packed with political messages.” One of the tracks on the album is a new collaboration with Burna Boy - Do it Yourself. According to Kidjo, “you got to do yourself. This is real Africa. Don't mess up with us. Because if we Africans let things scatter, everything breaks. We have got to fix Africa. It's our home, our country, our continent, everything. We have to do it ourselves, do it yourself. Don't wait for somebody to come help you build your own house.” “Mother Nature,” released in 2021, showcases a new generation of African talent, with contributions from the Nigerian pop giants Burna Boy and Mr. Eazi, the Zambian rapper Sampa the Great and more. some writing help from her daughter, Naima. Time Magazine has named Angélique Kidjo to their list of 100 Most Influential People of 2021. “The grace she exudes toward her fellow creators, and to humankind, is a reflection of her vibrancy, kindness, and generosity. Angélique is as real as they come.”— ALICIA KEY I added a Brazilian powerhouse to this episode. Elza Soares, 91, who pushed the boundaries of Brazilian music. In 2016, her “A Mulher do Fim do Mundo” (“The Woman at the End of the World”) won a Latin Grammy for best Brazilian popular music album. She died on January 20th, 2022. What do Doubt Gnahoré, Idan Raichel and Novalima have in common? They are all artists working with Cumbancha, one of the most prominent world music labels. On today's episode, I speak with Jacob Edgar, founder of Cumbancha. Edgar is an ethnomusicologist and world music producer. His trajectory took him to work at record label Putumayo World Music before deciding to start his own label. Edgar was moved by the talent he found around the world and frustrated that Putumayo only produced compilations. In 2006, with the support of Dan Storper, Putumayo's founder, Cumbancha was founded. The first name on the roster? Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Local, from Los Angeles. Fast forward to 2021, Cumbancha launched many new albums for artists such as Dobet Gnahoré, Sangit, Kolonien and Havana Meets Kingston. But who is listening to these artists? Edgar says that the world has millions of people who overcome language barriers to make connection with artists and music from different parts. "My experience at Putumayo has taught me that international music is much more popular than is generally recognized. People from all generations and backgrounds are looking for music with roots in cultural traditions, even if that music isn't as visible as it should be in the mainstream media." If that is true, why isn't mainstream media in the United States giving sufficient coverage to these artists and their tours? Tune in and embark on this conversation about the current challenges and celebrations of world music presenters. If you are a musician, Edgar talks about his vetting process for bringing on new artists. From the flamenco masters in Granada, Spain to the surprisingly robust flamenco scene in Oakland CA, Mclean has been honing his flamenco guitar and compositional skills to a high sheen. They're both in strong form on Te Canto Colores, the guitarist's newest collection of original compositions for the guitar and varied small ensembles featuring guitar and percussion, with vocals and bass gracing different spots on the album to provide startlingly different textures and effects. Although at a casual listen the recording may speak of traditional flamenco, the careful listener will discern many deeper influences and streams. The combination of blazing guitar runs, propulsive hand claps (palmas), wailing vocals (cante), percussive footwork, and passionately defiant gestures (baile) flows from a worldview that transforms everyday struggles into exquisite, strikingly cathartic expression. A sought-after flamenco composer and player on the West Coast, McLean was recently commissioned to play for an AguaClara Flamenco performance at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival's 40th anniversary. David has also created music for many stage performances with La Tania, Melissa Cruz, Fanny Ara, Theatre Flamenco, Caminos Flamencos, AguaClara Flamenco, and many others.
