As hard as it is to summarise such a long discography, we hopefully brought the essential of Sergio Mendes in 15 songs (Portuguese language-only, nothing personal). We talked about the origins of "Mas Que Nada" and its meaning, personal favourites from Brasil 65 released as Sergio Mendes Trio featuring Wanda Sá and Rosinha de Valença, and his later stardom in the USA under the moniker Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. We spoke about his partnerships with Halp Albert, Edu Lobo, Tom Jobim, Stevie Wonder, and more. The world lost a real Brazilian legend over the weekend. Sergio Mendes is the type of artist that gave birth to our show Worldy. From his many decades in the music business and defining genres that brought Brazilian music to the world- so many of his records are classics. Also his song Mas Que Nada (included in today's show) was the soundtrack to one of the best soccer- Nike adverts ever. RIP Sergio Mendes. A veces, cuando se pegan en Estados Unidos canciones que no están en inglés, dicho éxito se traduce en un impacto cultural de carácter global. Pero son pocas esas canciones que logran hacerlo. A Sergio le pasó que su versión de “Mas Que Nada”, con la orquesta Brasil 66, lo catapultó hacia la fama como uno de los músicos más influyentes del jazz, el pop y la música de Brasil. Mendes logró cautivar la imaginación del mundo con esta bella anomalía de samba y bossa. Su huella fue tan profunda en la cultura pop, que hizo que DJ's como Gilles Peterson y productores como Madlib y J. Dilla encabezaran movimientos de arqueología a través de los cuales el Hip Hop enriqueció su lenguaje urbano y transformara una cultura gris y con frecuencia triste, en una fructífera y exótica polinización sónica que inspiró a grandes emcees como Q-Tip y MF DOOM. Tuve la oportunidad de vender su álbum “TIMELESS” en 2006 durante mi paso por el mundo de los discos y nunca antes había estado tan emocionado por hacer que estas nuevas versiones, producidas por el magnífico @iamwill , fueran escuchadas por las audiencias de aquel entonces. Blame it on the Bossa Nova's magic spell that the Samba craze swept the nation in the mid-‘60s. And, two of the main proponents of this joyful, sun-splashed celebration were Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert. Herbie had the record label, A&M, and Sergio had the secret sauce, not to mention the lovely lead singer Lani Hall, who later became Mrs. Alpert. Mas Que Nada, translated from the Portuguese, means “Whatever,” and the lyrics are insisting that whatever else may be happening, the singer passionately craves the Samba. The rolling syncopation of Mendes's piano, along with the percussion and the siren call of Lani and her partner Janis make the seduction irresistible: this is just, good sexy fun, and you don't have to understand the lyrics to get the message. The song, originally written, recorded, and made a hit in Brasil by Jorge Ben, was spread around the world by Sergio and Herbie, making it to #47 on the Billboard Top 100. I hope that the tune's creator took some pride and pleasure it that - (along with the royalties)… so, “whatever!”

For this week's City Scenes twe've landed in a city that is a goldmine when it comes to amazing music. This is a city that lives and breathes music, located in south America, with a population of more than 6 million people, famous for its beaches, its carnival and of course its music. This week we are in Rio De Janeiro The breathtaking city of Rio De Janeiro or Cidade Maravilhoso as it is known, is the 2nd biggest city in Brazil after Sao Paulo and a cultural and artistic hub. It is also a popular tourist spot and for many people when they think of Rio De Janeiro they think of one thing - And that is Carnival. Every year millions of people take to the streets in Rio De Janeiro for the spectacle of the carnival parades, a huge celebration of brazillian culture soundtracked by the sound of a music style known as samba. Samba is a form of brazilian music that brings together a wide variety of percussion instruments and portuguese brazilian singing. The origins of samba has routes in the traditional music of African slaves that were forcibly transported to brazil dating back to the 16th century. These days samba is a national symbol for brazil and is recognised as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Brazil's Colonial past is in fact directly linked to the sounds that have been created in the country over the years. This melding of cultures, traditions and music from portuguese settlers, african slaves that were brought to brazil, indigenous people of brazil as well as the influence of american and european popular music throughout the ages is what has given Brazil such a unique cultural and musical identity. These conditions have led to the birth of innovative genres of music that are totally unique to Brasil such as samba, Bossa nova, Tropicalia and MPB or musica popular brasileira. In the late 1950s and early 60s a pioneering guitarist and recording artist called Joao Gilberto, introduced Brazil to a new sound. Using a nylon string guitar played with the fingers rather than a pick, introducing unconventional chords, accompanied by some subtle familiar samba rhythms and using two microphones at once to record guitar and vocals separately, meaning that the vocals could be sung softly and still have the same presence on a recording, Gilberto began to call this new style of music Bossa Nova. Bossa nova went on to become hugely popular all over the world and that is in no small part thanks to a track that Gilberto recorded along with his wife Astrud and a famous American Jazz musician called Stan Getz. The Girl From Ipanema is a song named after the famous Ipanema beach in Rio that would immortalise the legend of Rio Janeiro and Bossa Nova in music. Moving on From Bossa Nova, we look at another genre that was invented in Brasil in the 1960s and which like Bossa Nova built up on the foundation of Samba that already has such a huge place in Brazilian culture by this point. In the 1960s, an artist from Rio De Janeiro called Jorge Ben rose to fame with the release of a Bossa Nova song called Mas Que Nada. Jorge Ben would continue to innovate Brazilian music though and is known as the godfather of a genre called Samba Rock which took the rhythmic elements of samba and combined them with elements of american rock and soul that were also popular in Brazil at the time. In the 1970s Brasil had a thriving soul, funk and boogie scene and there's been a huge resurgence in popularity for music from that period in nightclubs around the world in recent years. In the 90s another pioneering musician called Fernanda Abreu was one of the first brazilian artists to use sampling and digital recording to create her own brand of downtempo Funk and R&B which gained her the title of “Brazil's first lady of funk”.

What do you get when you cross bossa nova with jazz and funk? You get Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66. Sergio performed with many artists through the years. He rerecorded Mas Que Nada in 2006 with the Black Eyed Peas. Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss recorded Mendes and Brasil 66 on Herb Alpert's A&M record label. One of the Brasil 66 singers was Lani Hall, later Herb Alpert's wife. Sergio was unhappy when Herb stole Lani away from the group. Mendes performed his biggest hit “The Look of Love” for Presidents Richard Nixon and Lyndon B. Johnson. In the 1970s his career stalled. I asked him about that. He had the hit Olympia which was used as the theme song for the Olympic games in 1984.

SERGIO MENDES is an iconic pianist, producer, songwriter, band leader, Grammy winner and Oscar nominee.  He is widely considered the best known Brazilian musician of all time, having reinvented himself continually over the course of a 60 year career.  Since a very early age, growing up in a small town in Brazil, Sergio began exploring different styles of music and his unique sound, including his use of Portuguese lyrics, was embraced all over the world.  His career took off with worldwide hits by his group Brasil '66. He has more than 60 releases that feature bossa nova heavily crossed with jazz and funk. Sergio was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 2012 as co-writer of the song "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio.  He is a unique example of a Brazilian musician primarily known in the United States, where his albums were recorded and where most of his touring has taken place. His mammoth hit 'Mas Que Nada' was the first ever international hit of a song in Portuguese. It was voted the fifth greatest Brazilian song ever and inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. Sergio says the key to successful songs is the simple melody. Though he never expected it, Sergio Mendes' timing and unique sound made him an international success.  One of the biggest crossover Brazilian pop artists of his generation, Sergio Mendes helped define the sound of Latin pop and dance music in the 20th century. For most of the second half of the '60s, Sergio was the top-selling Brazilian artist in the United States, charting huge hit singles that regularly made the Top Five. His records with his group Brasil 66 regularly straddled the domestic pop and international markets in America, getting played heavily on AM radio stations, both rock and easy listening, and he gave his label, A&M, something to offer light jazz listeners beyond the work of the company's co-founder, Herb Alpert.  Decades later he still tours the world and performs at numerous music festivals. Always mindful to keep re-inventing himself in order to remain relevant, Sergio has successfully collaborated with artists like John Legend, will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas and many well known Brazilian musicians.  In 2019, he issued his latest studio album, 'In the Key of Joy' in conjunction with a documentary film about his life. My parents have always been the type of people who keep music playing in the house, and I've picked up that habit too – it's really amazing to me when I encounter people who don't like music, or don't have the habit of listening to music all the time. My partner likes music, too, it's actually one of the first things that attracted me to her when we met. She'd play her playlists and I'd recognize half the songs – nothing lets you know you align with someone more then liking the same kinds of music.My Dad was really into jazz when I was growing up. He likes all kinds of jazz – smooth jazz, bebop, the stuff playing on NPR – anything. I've always had an affinity for jazz as well, even though the kinds of jazz I've played in the house has grown and changed over the years, and other things will always be favorites.When I think about what my family's favorite song is, it's got to be a long, long list. One song near the top though is definitely “Mas Que Nada”, the Al Jarreau version – its really something special. When I was a little kid and my Mom was working long hours, my Dad would put Mas Que Nada on full blast from the living room speakers, which were four feet tall wooden standalones with black speaker screens across the front, and books or candles or decorates always sitting on top of them. My Dad had what seemed like an entire wall of music equipment all hooked up in the living room, around the TV. I couldn't tell you what half the boxes did – seems like he had a mixer, an amplifier and a CD changer? But when I was a kid it seemed like an entire wall of sound machines that made music come from the sharp plastic disks that were supposed to stay inside their cases when they weren't in the CD player, and turned it into an electronic signal through all the boxes and wires, and come out as something so beautiful on the other side.Through the last 30 years of my life I feel like music has always, always been there, and I'll always be so grateful for the gift of loving music that my parents imparted to me.

Ana Carol é uma cantora gaúcha, que lançou recentemente seu álbum de estreia, Alma Nua, mas que já passou por todas as áreas da arte, desde música, poesia, dança e teatro. One thing I wanted to point out is that I mention in the podcast that the music in the parade is a combination of African and Caribbean music. That's true, but doesn't tell the full story. I've finally sat down and created the mix that I've wanted to create for months now!!! This is definitely a sound unlike any of my previous Podcasts and yet it's a sound that I love so much. Inspired by my recent late-September week in NYC, this is a much more down-tempo / chill and old-school house inspired set, with quite a bit of alt influence as well. This is the kind of set you'd hear out in NYC at Cielo, Griffin and The Park (so, consider it my audition tape for those places... Jared & Josh, Brian & Shawn!). It's the kind of set that you can put on for a long car road trip or an afternoon sitting by the pool. And I'm happier with it than pretty much any Podcast to date. This one is a journey... with very distinct sections... so join me on it. It's also in 320 kpbs bit rate (all of my other Podcasts to date have been 192), so while it's a large file to download (220 MB -- it is also an hour & 1/2 long!), the sound quality difference should be worth it!
