At its essence, shareholder capitalism is a means for mutually beneficial trade. It fosters specialization, fuels innovation, and propels economic growth. While shareholder capitalism is a central theme in Finance 101 courses, it is increasingly criticized, especially with the popularization of sustainability, ESG investing, and stakeholder capitalism. In this engaging new book, author David McLean, the William G. Droms Professor of Finance at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, explains how shareholder capitalism benefits all. Edward Rock, the Martin Lipton Professor of Law at New York University School of Law and the codirector of the university's Institute for Corporate Governance & Finance, will join McLean for a lively discussion on the nature of shareholder capitalism and its role in society. In today's show, I wanted to dive a little deeper, and help you understand just how important they can be in delivering a better customer experience, how they can help you offer more sustainable delivery options to your customers, and how they may be able to help facilitate a more cost-effective approach to circularity. So, my guest today is David McLean, founder and CEO of Hubbed, Australia's leading Collection Point network.    As you'll disover, not only are Hubbed the provider handling the collection point platform for Amazon and eBay with nearly 3000 locations around Australia, they can also help any brand offer the surging demand for Click & Collect services normally only accessible to hybrid or bricks & mortar brands. With last mile delivery estimated to contribute 50% or more of the carbon emissions for order fulfilment, I do think Collection Points are a critical puzzle piece that all brands should be evaluating.

An example is nutritional psychiatry [21:41] Dr. Mayer leaves us with his prescription for a healthier gut through diet and exercise   KEY TAKEAWAYS:   The gut has a substantial role in our overall health. Two members are local Cape Cod boys and they have a show coming up at The Music Room in W. Yarmouth on Aug. 11. The Eaters were contemporaries of acts like the Ramones, The Police, Iggy Pop, The Pretenders, and a host of others, and eventually became the house band for the fabled Boston punk rock club The Rat, where they played with a who's who of punk and new wave luminaries, including The Police, The Ramones, The Cars, Patti Smith, Dead Boys, Iggy Pop, The Stranglers, Go-Go's and many others. Fun Fact: The Cars' Ric Ocasek produced the band's original demos, which got the band signed to Elektra Records back in the day. The band, led by founder Steve Cataldo, also features an amazing lineup of players including other Boston rock vets, bassist Brad Hallen (of Ministry, Ric Ocasek and The Joneses), drummer David McLean (of Willie Alexander's Boom Boom Band) and guitarist/vocalist Adam Sherman (of Private Lightning), and between them, they have recorded and/or toured with such artists as Ministry, Iggy Pop, Aimee Mann, Jane Wiedlin, Susan Tedeschi, Jimmie Vaughan, Lenny Kaye and many others. On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast,  Tom Austin-Morgan talks to the bassist of the Boston-based garage punk band Nervous Eaters, Brad Hallen. This episode largely deals with the new single, Wild Eyes, and upcoming album, Monsters & Angels, as well as about Brad's life an career to this point, and boy has he had a career! He's played with so many bands and artists including Ministry, Iggy Pop, Elliot Easton (The Cars),  Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go's), Aimee Mann, Susan Tadeschi , Monster Mike Welch, Duke Robillard, Roomful of Blues and so many others.Formed in the mid-70's, the Nervous Eaters would eventually become the house band for the legendary Boston punk rock club The Rat, where they established themselves as a leading punk rock band in the Northeast, playing with a who's who of punk and new wave luminaries, including The Police, The Ramones, The Cars, Patti Smith, Dead Boys, Iggy Pop, The Stranglers, Go-Go's and many others. The band's original drummer, the late Jeff Wilkinson, let the band rehearse in his family's basement. “His mother, Florence, fed the band at these rehearsals. Band leader, Steve Cataldo explained: “We'd come up from the basement at different times to grab something to eat and she said, ‘Why don't you all come up and sit down and have a meal? You're such a bunch of nervous eaters.' So, it stuck. It wasn't the coolest name to hit the town, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. We had a good laugh over it and we loved Florence. We are the Nervous Eaters.”The band launched in the mid 1970's and were a leading punk rock band in the Northeast. Home base: The black-walled, sticky-floored, basement club in Boston's Kenmore Square - The Rat. The Eaters played snarling, self-deprecating lust-for-life blasts like Shit for Brains, Get Stuffed, Last Chance, Just Head, and I'm a Degenerate. Their first release a 45, on Rat Records, 1976, which gained local and national college airplay for their classic single - Loretta. The buzz built and their popularity grew. The Cars' Ric Ocasek produced a demo tape which got the band signed to Elektra Records. They toured around the world - but the album stalled, going astray from the start with the wrong assigned label producer and a lack of follow-through. The original Eaters dissolved but came back in the mid- ‘80s with a new line-up. The reborn Eaters launched a salvo called HOT STEEL AND ACID in 1986, a far better disc (that sounded like the band), on the indie label Ace of Hearts. Producer Rick Harte captured the Eaters vicious, vintage punk sound and it went as far as a Boston indie could take it.The band has been revived a few times over the years with various line-ups. The current version of the Nervous Eaters formed in 2018 and includes three other Boston rock veterans, bassist Brad Hallen (who you're about to learn all about), drummer David McLean (of Willie Alexander's Boom Boom Band) and guitarist/vocalist Adam Sherman (of Private Lightning), and between them, they have recorded and/or toured with such artists as Ministry, Iggy Pop, Aimee Mann, Jane Wiedlin, Susan Tedeschi, Jimmie Vaughan, Lenny Kaye and many others. You can find Nervous Eaters at their website: nervouseaters.net, on Facebook and Instagram and you can find Brad Hallen at his website bradhallen.comThis interview was made possible thanks to Peter Ferioli at Pantheon Podcasts and Mike Cubillos at Earshot Media and I'm incredibly grateful to them.ContactTwitter: @BannedBiogsFacebook: @BannedBiographiesInstagram: @bannedbiographiesE-mail: bannedbiographies@gmail.com

On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Steve Cataldo and Brad Hallen from The Nervous Eaters. The Nervous Eaters are an original rock and roll band from Boston, MA who helped define the Boston underground garage/punk rock scene of the late 70's. The band was formed by Steve Cataldo on the North Shore of Boston in Beverly, MA. Fueled by the raw sounds of Link Wray, early Chicago Blues greats and British guitar legends Beck, Clapton and Page, the Nervous Eaters created a raw edgy song style uniquely their own. The Nervous Eaters were one of the more popular rock & roll bands in the Northeast, eventually headlining at venues throughout the United States and Europe. The band has opened for numerous National Acts that included Iggy Pop, Squeeze, The Go Go's, The Pretenders, The Police, The Ramones and The Split Enzs. Other bands from the USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, and Asia have covered songs by the Nervous Eaters. Ric Ocasek of The Cars produced a demo for the band that was picked up by Elektra Records and released nationally in 1980. They have also recorded for Penimman Records, No Tomorrow Records and Ace of Hearts Records. The band was signed by Wicked Cool Records in 2021 with new songs premiering in 2022. The current band is Steve Cataldo on lead guitar and lead vocals, Brad Hallen on bass, back-up vocals, Adam Sherman on rhythm guitar, back-up vocals and David McLean on drums. Sherry, Steve, and Brad chat about their new music and much more! Check out nervouseaters.net for more details.

Global Ginga Presents.......David Mclean! What? Flamenco made in Oakland, California? Meet David Mclean. From the flamenco masters in Granada, Spain to the surprisingly robust flamenco scene in Oakland CA, Mclean has been honing his flamenco guitar and compositional skills to a high sheen. They're both in strong form on Te Canto Colores, the guitarist's newest collection of original compositions for the guitar and varied small ensembles featuring guitar and percussion, with vocals and bass gracing different spots on the album to provide startlingly different textures and effects. Although at a casual listen the recording may speak of traditional flamenco, the careful listener will discern many deeper influences and streams. The combination of blazing guitar runs, propulsive hand claps (palmas), wailing vocals (cante), percussive footwork, and passionately defiant gestures (baile) flows from a worldview that transforms everyday struggles into exquisite, strikingly cathartic expression. A sought-after flamenco composer and player on the West Coast, McLean was recently commissioned to play for an AguaClara Flamenco performance at the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival's 40th anniversary. David has also created music for many stage performances with La Tania, Melissa Cruz, Fanny Ara, Theatre Flamenco, Caminos Flamencos, AguaClara Flamenco, and many others. His current research interest is focused on the role of brain gut microbiome interactions in human diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease, autism spectrum disorders, obesity and inflammatory bowel disease. In addition to his academic interests, Mayer has a longstanding interest in ancient healing traditions and affords them a level of respect rarely found in Western Medicine. He has been involved in documentary film productions about the Yanomami people in the Orinoco region of Venezuela, and the Asmat people in Irian Jaya. He has recently co-produced the award winning documentary “In Search of Balance” and is working on a new documentary “Interconnected Planet”. He is the author of the 2016 bestselling book The Mind Gut Connection published by Harper&Collins and translated in 16languages. In his recent book, The Gut Immune Connection, Mayer proposes a radical, unifying concept about the chronic disease epidemic we are finding ourselves in. He discusses how changes in our diet, lifestyle and the way we interact with the world during the last 75 years have led to a profound dysregulation of the community of trillions of microbes living in our gut, resulting in a progressive chronic activation of our immune system. This aberrant immune system activation is emerging as the root cause of our current epidemic of interrelated chronic diseases affecting every part of our body. In addition, it makes us more vulnerable to viral pandemics. He uses the One Health concept to explain the intricate interconnectedness between the microbes living in our gut, in the soil, the health of our plants and our own health. He proposes a solution to the chronic disease epidemic, which emphasizes the implementation of major lifestyle changes, and focuses on a radically different approach not only to our diet but to the world. What you will learn from this episode: 1) How the gut is connected to the immune system 2) How the gut is actually our first brain, not our second brain 3) How changes in the gut microbiome can lead to conditions like Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimer's disease 4) How the gut microbiome can impact mental health 5) How the serotonin in our gut microbiome can influence our health and how we feel How to learn more about our guest: emeranmayer.com uclacns.org microbiome.ucla.edu Facebook: @emeranamayer IG: #emeranamayer Linkedin: @emeranamayer Please enjoy, share, rate and review our podcast and help us bring the message about precision health care to the world!

Dr Terry McCosker is a formidable store of experience and wisdom, born of a love of the land and an acute sense of humanity, and forged through suffering unimaginable tragedy. And that's alongside the trials and tribulations that come from simply being at the vanguard of significant change. Terry is a farmer, self-described transient part-owner of the National Estate, and co-founder of RCS Australia. Charles Massy has called RCS this country's leading broad-scale grazing and farming education company. And he says, “When I look back over the rise of regenerative agriculture in Australia, I see at the forefront Terry and Pam McCosker and their RCS organisation. Today it remains a world leader in the field.” Terry is credited with bringing holistic grazing to Australia, having connected with global pioneers Stan Parsons and Allan Savory. But let it be known, he thought it was “the greatest pile of shit he'd ever seen”. He ended up embarking on extensive research testing the theories and practices for himself. When he became convinced of Parsons' and Savory's work, “Thus began”, Massy says, “arguably the single greatest broad-acre regenerative agriculture movement to turn around land degradation and profitability in farming in this country.” Now there are around 10,000 producers around Australia, and the world, that have been involved in RCS' programs. Whatever your walk of life, and whatever angle you're taking, or thinking of taking, in the regenerative movement, this conversation resonates on a deeply human level. Those who followed our travels last year will have heard a number of remarkable stories of pastoralists and farmers bringing land and people back to life. In some cases, their situations had become dire, and land turned to dust. Wherever we went, an organisation called RCS Australia came up in conversation. So we visited them late last year in Yeppoon, Queensland, and had the pleasure to meet legendary founder Terry McCosker and his team. Charles Massy calls RCS one of the key training groups in Australia in regenerative agriculture and holistic grazing, including the business of it all, with “brilliant social learning programs and workshops, and a network of support.” When we visited, New Chair David McLean was there, and we got talking. After a number of fascinating conversations over several days, we subsequently resolved to meet up when he was next doing training in our neck of the woods. David's journey with RCS started as a client. He went on to become General Manager in 2012 and Chair in 2018. He is now a highly sought-after educator, consultant, facilitator and public speaker across Australia. Like Charles Massy, who we feature on podcasts 016 and 032, David's got an invaluable over-arching view of what's happening across Australia and the world in regenerative agriculture. His insights are extensive and instructive, on changes in the movement, on country, in families and communities, in the businesses, in impact investing, in increasingly volatile climate and other forces of change, and importantly in how the thinking about the connections between all these things is developing. When talking about such a holistic approach, and how it relates to life in cities as well, we arrive at themes of trust and connection. Why is trust so central to building the movement? What does success look like? What do we do about the potential co-opting of the term regenerative? Why is ‘going organic' not enough? How can the most meaningful investments and impacts be made? How do we respond to at times diabolical drought, fire and flood? And how do we loosen the hold our cultural stories have on us, to stop riding the unicorn, as David puts it, and operate in a way that's more aligned with the realities of how the living world works? When in Perth recently, David dropped by Anthony's place for this conversation. Get more: RCS Australia's website, including the bio's of David and founder Terry McCosker - https://www.rcsaustralia.com.au/the-rcs-story/our-people/ David's recent blog post Stop Riding the Unicorn - https://www.rcsaustralia.com.au/stop-riding-unicorn/ (including a link to the ABC story that might make David reconsider the unicorn metaphor). Is Theology Over? Since the 19th century, many philosophers have argued our current age has no use for theology or else have collapsed theology into “other vocabularies.” Some have called for theology to be banished from serious consideration and conversation. Is there still a place for theology in the 21st century that is so dominated by commerce, technology and the natural sciences?

These days we are hearing so much about the so-called, “gut brain connection.” As many of you will note, this was the central thesis of Brain Maker. On today’s program we will explore a new book, The Mind-Gut Connection, by my friend Dr. Emeran Mayer. Dr. Mayer is a Gastroenterologist, Neuroscientist and Professor in the Departments of Medicine, Physiology and Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.  He is the Executive Director of the Oppenheimer Family Center for Neurobiology of Stress at UCLA. As one of the pioneers and leading researchers in the role of mind-brain-body interactions in health and chronic disease, his scientific contributions to the broad area of basic and translational enteric neurobiology with wide-ranging applications in clinical GI diseases and disorders is unparalleled. He has published more than 300 scientific papers, and co-edited 3 books. He is the recipient of the 2016 David McLean award from the American Psychosomatic Society. His most recent work has focused on the role of the gut microbiota in influencing the brain, the role of food addiction in obesity, and the role of the brain in chronic inflammatory diseases of the gut. He has a longstanding interest in ancient healing traditions and affords them a level of respect rarely found in Western Medicine. He has been involved in documentary film productions about the Yanomami people in the Orinoco region of Venezuela and will discuss these experiences, dating back 40 years, with us today.
