Mount Everest, the world's highest mountain, faces an environmental crisis, giving us a preview of the devastating effects of climate change. While the ice on its glaciers is melting at a record pace, increasing the risk of floods and other disasters, mass tourism has brought garbage and other pollution issues for local populations.Climbers Conrad Anker and Dawa Steven Sherpa have worked together in the Everest Valley. Today, they are both taking action. In this episode of On Thin Ice, they discuss how climbers and local communities can work together to protect the mountain and its people from climate threats.Conrad is one of the most iconic alpinists of the past three decades, and he has witnessed the dramatic transformations brought by climate change to mountain environments everywhere; he is now working with local communities and experienced Sherpa mountaineers to help make ice climbing safer in the region, as the glaciers become more unpredictable. Dawa, a board member of the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation, is a famed mountaineer, serial entrepreneur and climate advocate, representing a new generation of Nepalis who are trying to develop a sustainable tourism industry–one that respects local traditions as well as the mountains they live off. Dawa has worked relentlessly to develop programs such as “Carry me back”, one of the key projects supported by the foundation, to reduce pollution and other negative impacts of tourism in the Everest Valley. How can the local Sherpa communities handle the tons of trash left behind by tourism? How can climbers mitigate the risks of glacier collapses and avalanches? These are some of the vital questions they address on the mountain on a daily basis, as they look for answers that could also help other alpinists around the world. On Thin Ice is produced in partnership with the Bally Peak Outlook Foundation.Head to ballypeakoutlook.org/ to learn more about the foundation, which is on a mission to safeguard the world's fragile mountain habitats from the adverse effects of global warming and excessive tourism.

Alasdair Macleod, Michael Oliver & Patrick Highsmith are this week's guests. Alasdair has recently pointed out that the Fed, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan are now themselves becoming insolvent. As interest rates rise along with surging inflation, the massive debt they purchased to stimulate their economies is declining in value, resulting in negative net worth balance sheet positions. Insolvent central bank balance sheets began to emerge before Russia invaded the Ukraine. Now massive sanctions against Russia, keeping it from trading in dollars at a time when supply chain constraints are much, much greater than those created by COVID, threaten massive shortages of essential commodities on global markets, which in turn threaten prospects of dollar-denominated hyperinflation and still higher interest rates. President Biden talks of a New World Order with the U.S. leading it, but that may not be possible because creditor countries like China, not debtor nations like the U.S., end up as leaders when systems collapse. The U.S. has been running massive trade and fiscal deficits since 1971 and now the exponential direction of those deficits are blowing up the dollar-based system. Alasdair will discuss these dynamics as well as how gold may become a cornerstone of a new currency system. Owners of gold like Timberline Resources, which is in the process of making a significant gold discovery in Nevada, should be in a much stronger position than those who have put their faith in the Fed's dollar. Patrick will update us on Timberline's exciting gold discovery, and Michael will provide his latest momentum and structural analysis for gold and other key markets.

What do you call someone who graduates from Berkley College of Music, stars in the soundtrack and in a role in a movie and wins a Latin Grammy for BEST NEW ARTIST? Nella! This young artist hailing from the Margarita Island of Venezuela is taking Latin music by storm with major milestones early in her career! Her tour kicks off on February 5th, 2022 at Stanford! I got to talk to Nella today and asked her a few questions. I did not know she speaks Portuguese so well! Our interview quickly became trilingual - English, Portuguese and Spanish. How fun! Here are the topics of our conversation: Tell us a little bit about your youth, growing up in Margarita, Venezuela. Did you have any tendencies towards performance? What are some of your favorite artists then and now? How do you describe your music and your stage persona? Walk us through your day at the Latin Grammys in 2019? What did you do, what emotions did you feel and did you celebrate your win that same night? You graduated from Berklee College of Music not too long ago. You became part of of the soundtrack and the movie “Everybody Knows." You won a Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. What role would you like to have in Latin music or any other genre? What is next? What can the audience expect from your performance during this tour? My perception is that Nella is a pioneer. She brings her unique style fueling so much simplicity, creativity, versatility and talent! She is not afraid to question the status quo as her music intertwines various styles and rhythms with clever and meaningful lyrics. From earlier, more nostalgic songs with the influence of flamenco, to the more upbeat songs featuring mega Latin stars like Juan Luis Guerra and Pedro Capó, Nella is a handful of songs that she sings with her bare heart and soul. Her captivating stage presence can only be witnessed when standing in the same performance venue with her. Check our her tour schedule and witness Nella's beautiful voice - la de la voz quebrada (the one with the broken voice). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/global-ginga/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/global-ginga/support
Doug Casey, Chen Lin and Dr. Quinton Hennigh return. Not only rhetoric but policies of the Biden Administration look more akin to those of fascist and/or communist dictatorships than a free market capitalist system. While America never had a perfectly free market capitalist system, thanks to both Republican and Democrat parties, it is now hard to discern economic policies much different from fascist and communist governments as our choice to engage in commerce is increasingly regulated by big government. Nor do Americans seem to care much about civil liberties as evidenced by the demolition of our First Amendment rights through Big Tech censorship aimed at giving in to the Democrat party dictatorial power. As the middle class dwindles and the top 1% own nearly all of America's wealth, the middle class is rapidly moving toward abject poverty as stimulus checks from “Uncle Joe” are quickly losing value thanks to QE programs, one after another. Yet Americans who vote on either side of the isle tend to make their decisions not on the basis of classical logic but on emotions. Doug will help us ferret out what has led to a decline in America's living standards. Is it the capitalist system that has failed or is it the fault of the politicians that simply pulled the stable construct of capitalism out from under its foundation? I look forward to Doug's answers to those questions as well as where he thinks the world is heading to and how you should prepare. Quinton will update us on the progress Lion One Metals as it moves toward test mining its high-grade alkaline gold deposit in Fiji. Chen will share his thoughts about 2022 as we start the new year and offer some investment suggestions in the biotech and gold mining sectors.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.11.294397v1?rss=1 Authors: Shimell, J. J., Globa, A. K., Sepers, M. D., Wild, A. R., Matin, N., Raymond, L. A., Bamji, S. X. Abstract: Palmitoylation is the most common post-translational lipid modification in the brain. However, the role of palmitoylation and palmitoylating enzymes in the nervous system remains elusive. One of these enzymes, Zdhhc5, has previously been shown to regulate synapse plasticity. Here, we report that Zdhhc5 is also essential for the formation of excitatory, but not inhibitory synapses both in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrate in vitro that this is dependent on Zdhhc5s enzymatic activity, its localization at the plasma membrane, and its C-terminal domain which has been shown to be truncated in a patient with schizophrenia. Loss of Zdhhc5 in mice results in a decrease in the density of excitatory hippocampal synapses accompanied by alterations in membrane capacitance and synaptic currents, consistent with an overall decrease in spine number and silent synapses. These findings reveal an important role for Zdhhc5 in the formation and/or maintenance of excitatory synapses. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

Aperte o play e descubra.
Elephants are ripped away from their families and broken in horrific torture scenarios in order to make them tame enough to provide rides for tourists. The videos of the training are the stuff of nightmares. When abducted from the wild, elephant families are separated, gunned down and otherwise violated. All this so that tourists, who think they love elephants, can hop on one and ride them through the streets of India. It's morally indefensible and must be stopped. The way to stop it is simple! Simply... refuse to ride.

Rev Canon Philip Mounstephen is the head of one of the oldest para church organisations in the UK. The Church Mission Society was set up after a group of Christians gathered together to abolish the slave trade. 200 years on, the organisation aims to see people engaged in God's mission all around the world. He talks about his formative years, being raised in the Anglican church; finding God for himself and why he shouldn't have gone into teaching. He shares his views on youth ministry and has a message to church leaders and offers simple advice on how churches can better engage in their local communities.
