Dawn Walker is an associate director, Industry Relations (DUAE) in AM Best's Strategy and Communications department. Dawn has more than 15 years of insurance industry and risk management experience, and joined AM Best in 2022, initially serving as a senior financial analyst, conducting performance assessments for Delegated Underwriting Authority Enterprises.  Previously, Dawn as a senior risk management analyst at MacAndrews & Forbes Inc., a global mergers and acquisitions firm in New York City. She also previously served as a senior account executive for Alliant Insurance Services, serving its ultra-high net worth book of business.  Dawn received her MBA degree with a concentration in Enterprise Risk Management at St. John's University. She graduated Cum Laude earning a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Arizona. She holds a Property & Casualty and Life & Health Broker's license, has earned an Associate in Risk management (ARM) designation and is actively pursuing a Charter Property Casualty Underwriter's designation. Highlights from the Show AM Best is known for many things, but mainly for the assessments and ratings they perform on players across the insurance industry. For the Delegated Underwriting Authority Enterprise (DUAE) space in particular, they are bringing transparency to help drive continued growth not only of the DUAE segment, but the product innovation that goes on within it. The level of growth in the delegated underwriting authority space has been huge, getting to $77B in the US alone, and making up 10% of the P&C market globally. The key areas they look at when assessing DUAEs includes Operations, UW Capabilities, Governance and Controls, Financials and Corporate Structure. This analysis helps bring transparency to the sector to help facilitate partnerships while also giving DUAEs a blueprint for how to optimize their operations for growth, stability and, ultimately, success Why do insurers work with Delegated Underwriting Authority Enterprises (DUAEs), like MGAs and MGUs? Can't they just compete in the market directly? DUAEs bring expertise in niches and market segments that incumbent carriers may not be able to build efficiently given their scale, and the relative size of these niches being too small to support the operational cost of a carrier. DUAEs often come with expertise and distribution in the segment, allowing carriers working with them to access new spaces efficiently, quickly and profitably. What can support or stand in the way of the success of a Delegated Underwriting Authority Enterprises (DUAEs), like MGAs and MGUs? AM Best performs assessments of these entities to bring transparency to key success factors insurers would look at when deciding whether to work with a DUAE or not. Welcome to RIMScast. Your host is Justin Smulison, Business Content Manager at RIMS, the Risk and Insurance Management Society.   We'll talk about what's happening with Spencer Educational Foundation and how educators and institutions can create risk management programs and how they can secure a grant via Spencer.   The risk management and insurance studies program at UNR was made possible by a RIMS-funded Course Development Grant through Spencer Educational Foundation. UNR had 102 students enrolled in the RMI program's third semester in Spring 2023, up from 62 one year before! They hope RMI becomes a minor in Spring 2024.   Beyond that, UNR's mentoring program remains viable, with 23 students and 19 industry professionals participating this past spring. They also have upcoming plans for an Insurance & Risk Management Fair, a Planned Networking Event.   David Cisneros is here to talk about the success of the program, the mentoring program that supplements it, his success rate in helping students prepare for risk careers, and a bit about his own resume.   Key Takeaways: [:01] About RIMScast. [:28] About today's episode where we will discuss risk management education with Ken Goldstein of the Spencer Educational Foundation and David Cisneros, who leads the Risk Management Studies Program at the University of Nevado, Reno. [1:45] We are very excited about the RIMS ERM Conference 2023, which will be held November 2nd and 3rd in Denver, Colorado! The theme is Elevate and Evolve. Registration will open soon as will a call for nominations for the ERM Award of Distinction. Visit the events page on RIMS.org for more information. [2:11] We're going to put the spotlight on education in today's episode. We will be joined by David Cisneros who leads the Risk Management Studies Program at the University of Nevada, Reno. David was able to launch his program, thanks in part, to a RIMS-funded grant. The Spencer Educational Foundation was a key player in that relationship. [2:38] Justin introduces his friend Ken Goldstein, the University Partnerships Director for the Spencer Educational Foundation, to talk about launching a Risk Studies Program, and how you can launch one at your university. [3:43] The Spencer Educational Foundation funds the education of the next generation of risk management professionals with five core grant programs. Ken oversees Merit-based Scholarships for Undergrad, Grad, and Ph.D. students who are interested in risk management and insurance. [4:03] Ken also oversees Risk Manager on Campus and a program that draws students into events like RISKWORLD in Atlanta, and oversees course development for colleges and universities domestically and into Canada. Ken tells about his experience in the industry and teaching. [4:55] Ken explains grants and merit-based scholarships. The student has to have an interest in risk management and insurance. Funding for undergrad and grad typically ranges from $5,000 to $10,000 based on your category. Risk Manager on Campus brings practical application to campus with risk managers and seasoned professionals. [5:21] Spencer Educational Foundation has a grant program that funds corporate risk management internships. General grants support travel to conferences like RISKWORLD and engaging in experiential learning with visits to corporate risk managers or insurance companies, even internationally to places like Lloyds of London. [5:45] They are very excited about their course development grant program. They support RM 101 at colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and into Canada as well as upper-level programming in niche areas such as cyber security, privacy risk management, and insure tech. It comes down to student interest and faculty expertise. [6:31] The RMI landscape is dynamically changing with technology. Figuring out how to protect private and proprietary information is key. Having institutions able to teach that is critical. [6:51] Since 2014, Spencer Educational Foundation has funded over 40 course development grants, spending over $1 million at colleges and universities. A third of that funding has come from RIMS. In addition to finances, a benefit of collaborating with RIMS is in tapping into the local chapters with Risk Manager on Campus. [7:28] A number of the chapter members act as adjuncts or clinicals and appreciate their time in the classroom with students. [7:34] The Funding Their Future Gala is coming up on September 14th, 2023 at the Cipriani in New York City. Justin attended last year and had a blast! It was also RIMS CEO Gary LaBranche's first time there. [8:06] Ken offers details about the Gala. It's their largest fundraising event of the year. It feeds the grant programs, scholarships, and course development. It assists with supporting next-generation risk management and insurance talent. This year they are honoring Lucy Fato, EVP, General Counsel, and Global Head of Communications at AIG. [8:29] Lucy Fato is a supporter of next-generation talent, factoring in issues around diversity, equity, inclusion, and career-pathing. It will be an exciting night. [9:00] There are some wonderful developments at the University of Nevada, Reno. Our next guest, David Cisneros, is a faculty member there. He launched a program of classes that Spencer and RIMS funded. Ken describes it. Course development started in 2022. There are a number of classes. The program scaled quickly to over 100 students. [9:47] Ken suggests the secret to such growth is to bring risk management and insurance talent from both an industry and teaching perspective into the classrooms. David leads the RMI studies program at UNR. He's also the Corporate Grant Development Lead, so he interacts with Spencer Educational Foundation frequently. [10:14] Something that resonates with students is to have practical application in the classroom. David and his colleagues do a great job in supplying that, as well as securing internships and positions. Ken looks forward to hearing from him! [10:33] RIMS plug time! [12:14] David Cisneros is the Director for Risk Management and Insurance Studies at the College of Business at University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). The Risk Management and Insurance Studies Program at UNR was made possible by a RIMS-funded course development grant. [12:29] UNR had 102 students enrolled in the RMI program's third semester in Spring 2023, up from 62, one year before! They hope RMI becomes a minor in Spring 2024. [12:44] David is here to talk about the success of the program, the mentoring program that supplements it, his success rate in helping students prepare for risk careers, and a bit about his own resume. Justin welcomes David Cisneros to RIMScast. [13:05] David shares some background on his risk career at Oracle, IGT, and more and how he is teaching now at UNR what he did in risk and where it's going. It's not as stressful for him. He loves teaching students about the industry and what he did for 25 years, and looking at where the industry is going! [14:44] David has five elective classes. He teaches two; adjunct professors teach three. When he asks students on the first day how many want a career in insurance or risk management, no hands go up! He tells them that by the end of the semester, there will be a handful of students working in the industry. After three semesters, there are 21! [16:05] David's favorite part of the industry had always been negotiating the deal, either the settlement of a claim or the purchase of a policy. His students love to hear war stories from the risk management field. Halfway through the semester, they want more. [17:25] The five courses in the program are geared toward risk management. Three courses are waivers for the ARMTM through The Institutes. You can get your Associate in Risk Management designation. The other courses are Property & Casualty and Life & Health. The program will be a minor in 2024, and hopefully, a major in five to 10 years. [18:41] David was aware of Spencer Educational Foundation during his career. AT UNR, he learned about the grants through an email list, so he applied and that's how he became involved in it and got the grant awarded to UNR. [19:37] The RMI program at UNR started with the curriculum. Once the curriculum was established, David knew he had to make insurance interesting and show students there was a career involved. Students look for three things: money, a work/life balance, and a challenge; not to be bored. Students promote the RMI by word of mouth. [20:53] David gets students interested by bringing in industry professionals to talk about jobs and the career. He brings in four guest speakers in a semester. A mentorship program is helpful and it was not common at UNR. There have been close to 30 students involved in the mentorship program. [21:29] There are job opportunities and mentors in risk management, insurance, and accounting. Most of David's students are finance majors. He tells them the program will find them a job if they talk with their mentor. David has just applied for the Risk Manager on Campus program for the next semesters. He has been working in a similar program. [22:27] David tells the students at the beginning that he's going to be the professor that he always wanted in college that's going to answer questions and help them find a job. [22:56] The three adjunct professors were each previously mentors in the program. When David started, there were just two courses and he was teaching both. He started the mentorship program and three industry professionals agreed to be mentors. David asked them if they wanted to teach and they said yes. It's been great! [23:40] From an enrollment standpoint, the RMI program is the fastest-growing program in the business school. But other programs are already established minors and majors, so it's hard to compare them. The semester starts in August and the cohort is already filled. The word gets out by the students. [24:33] Spencer has been fantastic with direction for the program. They have given insight into what big programs are doing and how. The funding and guidance have been invaluable. Ken Goldstein and his predecessor have been great. When David launched the program, he had the curriculum in mind; going from there came from Spenser. [25:53] All the teaching is done in person. There is no virtual component. David is able to connect with students and he believes that is the secret to the program's success. He talks with them about their goals and dreams. He can't do that over Zoom. [27:16] The program at RMI UNR is based on three pillars: Curriculum — courses students want, that can give them an industry designation, Experiential Learning — bringing in guest speakers to talk about the industry, and Job Creation and Fulfillment — David doesn't make promises but he does what he can to get them a job. [27:55] Once the students trust that David wants to get them a job, they're interested in the program. David's measure of success, according to the Dean of the School of Business, is jobs for students, post-graduation. From that standpoint, they are doing well! [28:40] David's thoughts for students thinking of any risk management course, “When you're thinking about a career, it's not just sales. The industry is so vast and so wide, that there are careers for every type of personality. … Whatever your personality type, whatever your strengths are, there is a job for you in insurance and risk management.” [29:26] Justin thanks David for joining us on RIMScast! David appreciates it. Even outside the government, Mais dedicated much of his life to public service. He most recently served as chair of the Council on Ethics for the town of Wilton, CT, where he lives. Other recent service includes the Maritime Aquarium of Norwalk; the American Red Cross; the Board of Finance of the Town of Wilton; and the Rotary Club of Wilton.  Highlights from the Show Commissioner Mais opened with the mentality that they are open at the Department, and that we are all in this together across the industry He believes we do not do a good job marketing ourselves as an industry and how much it has to offer people He has been on the regulator side through some major challenges in the industry, including the Great Financial Crisis and COVID Thinking about how to be innovative and supportive of change, you have to start at the core mission of regulators to protect consumers and the industry to protect people and help them recover from loss Regulators also have to protect competition and health in the market, and that takes innovation A precursor of innovation is a willingness and appetite to fail He's seeing a movement to reduce friction, like easier Life insurance pre-underwriting processes to a move to risk mitigation like we're seeing on Cyber The Department in Connecticut is keeping this in mind as they consider the flexibility they need to support these efforts Connecticut has been very collaborative and supportive of innovation in the industry, which Commissioner Mais sees as a function of a number of things, including the level of education in the state, the amount of insurance activity in the state, decisions of the administration to collaborate across departments and with business, etc Climate Change is on his mind, given that CT has the second highest concentration of coastal insured property in the country, so he's not just looking at access to insurance but also efforts to reduce exposure through smarter building decisions, mitigating actions, etc. States, being independent of each other and not part of a federal regulatory system, are all experimenting, trying things, and sharing their experience with each other As President-elect of the NAIC, Commissioner Mais sees the federated model of state regulation being a big contributor to the health and strength of the industry He leaves with the idea of Collaboration and working together as central to the future of the industry; an us vs. them mentality will not work That means every party needs to come together – consumers, companies, regulators – and see how we can get to Yes on ideas that are of genuine benefit in helping people get protected This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance Volume III. Well besides being hilarious (follow him on LinkedIn here ----> https://www.linkedin.com/in/ross-conner-cic-crm-9b1189a/ ) and having a truly remarkable life story, Ross also created a unique insurance captive to help manage risk at a very large children's activity franchise. Ross started his career as a general contractor building high-end homes, but an unfortunate downturn in the economy coupled with being overleveraged with inventory he couldn't sell ultimately led him down the path of bankruptcy. Ross was then in a position where he had to reinvent himself and eventually found his way into the world of insurance. In this episode, Ross emphasizes the power of Networking. He says networking played a crucial role in helping him turn his career around and how your network can create opportunities, generate leads, and open doors that can help you grow your business. Here are three tips to make the most of your network: 1. Attend events and conferences: One of the best ways to meet like-minded people and expand your network is by attending industry-specific events and conferences. These events bring together professionals from different backgrounds who share similar interests and can create opportunities for business collaborations. 2. Build genuine relationships: It's important to approach networking as an opportunity to build relationships rather than simply sell yourself or your business. Take the time to listen to others, understand their needs, and offer support and assistance where possible. 3. Follow-up: After connecting with someone, take the initiative to follow up with them. Send an email or set up a phone call to check in and keep the lines of communication open. Jason Scott is First Vice President for Alliant Insurance Services in Dallas, TX. Jason originally learned the art of sales from his Dad, who taught him how to sell without being "sales-y".  He also taught Jason the power of getting to the yes or the no as fast as possible, because the "maybe's" are career killers.  His Dad was actually instrumental in helping popularize a seasoning in the United States called "Tajin", which is a mixture of lime, chili powder, and salt, and is very popular within the Hispanic community. His first sales role was at Paycom, which inadvertently opened the door for him to enter the insurance world, as one of his payroll prospects was a large regional insurance brokerage in Dallas called MHBT.  They kept calling him back multiple times to present the same thing, but to new people, and he started to realize they were actually interested in hiring him to work for the firm instead! Jason was offered roles within MHBT in both the Employee Benefits and Property & Casualty departments,  but he gravitated toward EB because there were a couple of other young producers in that department he liked, plus he found the subject matter more interesting and creative. Eventually, he found himself at Alliant after the acquisition of his prior firm called Crystal & Company, and there he had the opportunity to help hone best practices within his new, larger employer.  Big on company culture, Jason stresses the idea of servant leadership and making sure the people that work for you feel valued and supported. Jason isn't all business, though, as he also coaches his young sons in baseball at a very competitive level.  However, it is not all about talent for him, as Jason brings the emphasis of team culture from his work life to the baseball diamond, and won't accept new players onto the roster based on pure ability alone.  They also need to be respectful, and polite to their coaches, and he also manages the expectations and egos of the parents as well. In the big picture of healthcare, Jason is bullish on the private sector to solve the problems we encounter and believes more consumer-driven plans will eventually prevail. He also believes innovation in our space is only going to accelerate, and that the BUCAH's of the world will continue to stay relevant as long as they can, but face stiff competition from new entrants into the market. Most of us, when we think about Property & Casualty insurance, we think of the risk that results from the loss or damage to property like our homes or cars, however PNC insurance, when applied in today's context, can protect us against so many other liabilities. Randy speaks with Melanie Wilcox, Chubb's Head of Personal Risk Services, to discuss both traditional and other types of PNC insurance that may include personal cyber security coverage or umbrella insurance that covers claims in excess of single coverage policies.

Like many episodes of Gimme Some Truth, this one on liability was developed from lots of advanced legwork, methodically sculpted until it reached its culmination at the time of recording. Well, that's not quite true. Clint Walkner – one of the founding partners of Walkner Condon – shared a personal anecdote about his own liability coverage a few minutes before the scheduled recording, and it snowballed from there. But, nonetheless, it's an important subject, with an actionable ending for you, the listener, from Clint. So, what would happen if your home burned down tomorrow? If you're a household employer, what if your nanny took a tumble down the stairs of your deck and broke their leg? While these are just hypothetical, there is a chance that these situations – or a version of them – could happen. And the last thing you want is to be left holding the proverbial bag when your coverage isn't sufficient. And in light of recent events – in particular, the increase in home values as well as home renovations during COVID – there's a chance the coverage you started with might not be enough. What's next? The U.S. Department of Treasury issues a “riveting” (wink, wink) statistical report each year about the insurance industry. This year's report indicates an 18% growth in a trillion-dollar industry just in the United States alone between 2020 and 2021, and all the numbers are pointing to another record year of growth this year. Once you add Medicare and Property & Casualty, we are looking at a 2-3 trillion dollar industry!     We are in an incredibly explosive industry that has more demand than agents to serve this exploding need. In this episode, Edward Pritchett, Senior Partner with Symmetry Financial Group, sits down with Roger Short to discuss why and how this industry has changed his life. Commercial Construction: Elevate the Industry

Every business, regardless of the industry, must navigate the world of risk management. In commercial construction, Property Casualty insurance is a “must have”, not only for the protection of the company assets, but also for clients to even consider you for the project award. In this episode, we are fortunate to have Joe Wolf, the Sr. Vice President Alliant Insurance Services, Inc. Alliant is a full-service broker with over 7,000 employees nationally. Joe details how this company, with its broad base, can help him as a broker help you understand exactly what coverages you should have and how to get the best value from an insurance program.  Joe is a very successful and well respected broker and shares his thoughts about being “appropriately covered” in todays' construction market, neither under or over insured. He explains the basic types of coverages every business should have. He details the levels often required by the clients and shares his personal experiences with stories of those who were not covered adequately and the resultant unintended consequences. He describes how the business works so regardless of your level in the company, you will understand this often-overlooked issue.  Joe talks about the need for the owners to challenge your current insurance broker, even if you have a strong relationship, as it will be in the best interest of your company. In either case, you will understand what a good broker should provide for you. Insurance is not sexy but is essential when managing the risk we face every day in this business. Those who understand and embrace it won't be one of the unfortunate companies who were improperly insured.

The ballpark is between 50 and 100 and the time can be between one to two and a half hours. You will have to use the https://home.pearsonvue.com site to find a testing center in your area so that you can take the test. Testing centers administer all sorts of tests. When you arrive at the center on the day of your test, you have to check in with the center and you cannot be late. If you are late, you will not be able to take the test unless you notified the testing center in advance with a valid reason, such as a family emergency. When you check in, you will need to show a valid form of photo identification, such as a passport or driver's license. During the test, you will have to place anything you are carrying into a locker for the duration of the test. This includes jewelry, watches, phones, etc. The testing room is monitored using cameras to keep the tests as honest as possible. You are expected to remain silent as a courtesy to other test takes and to make sure that no one is cheating. Before you take the actual test, you will complete a tutorial that walks you through how the test is to be taken. For Example if you live in Illinois here is the test handbook available at the Persons web site you would find similar information at Pearsons depending on what state you are taking the test. Notes from the episode Consolidation of distribution players across the board Insurance exchange platforms (Bold Penguin, Insureon, etc) Everyone rushed to integrate with them, especially on small commercial In the last 12-18 months, we've seen a rush of acquiring them (Aon buys CoverWallet, AmFam buys Bold Penguin) Seeing some of the distribution players buying innovation companies to ostensibly build a new platform to distribute their products differently This all leads us to question how we've sold, prospected, etc, and what will change here. How will AI going to play into the lead gen space, and especially moving beyond personal lines Blockchain as a way to distribute data, but retain control Initial use cases seem to be focused on the regulatory area as a way to get the data into the places that require it, but allow carriers to retain  control of the data Increased awareness of and focus on security means the additional control you can retain is really attractive Blockchain can become a natural extension of internal data and analytics work that's gone on because it's a way to share data, so it can bolster what your analytics can do When will we move from building solutions to putting them together (by aggregating all the best-of-breed point solutions available)? The Cloud enables democratizing data so you can do more with it in more places, and to do so relatively inexpensively Using outcomes to anchor technology investments Focus on business agility and flexibility more so than just speed when looking at Agile Focusing on outcomes rather than replacing a system Jane's advice to CIOs is to make the Technology organization in a company part of the business fabric, being curious and interested This episode is brought to you by Medallia (Medallia.com), and the book series, "The Future of Insurance: From Disruption to Evolution" by Bryan Falchuk (future-of-insurance.com). Chubb (CB) is a combination of Chubb Insurance and ACE. Contrary to what people may assume, ACE actually acquired Chubb, not the other way around. Chubb's brand has generally been better received than ACE's so it made sense for the company to take on the Chubb name. Nevertheless, this remains very much “ACE in sheep's clothing”, as CEO Evan Greenberg has said in the past. Greenberg rose to prominence at AIG while his father Hank was still the domineering CEO. After taking a year off, Evan joined ACE as the CEO and proceeded to make acquisitions and scale up the insurance business. While doing that, he was able to establish loss and expense ratios, as well as returns on equity, that generally outperformed the industries. The Chubb acquisition is the largest yet and will undoubtedly be a large focus of the earnings report. The company has not yet made material adjustments to its Purchase Price Allocation accounting but, as noted in the video, it is important to keep an eye on how this evolves. The other main area to pay attention to will be pricing. How has underwriting discipline been maintained (or lost) during the quarter and how does management expect it to evolve. There has been some areas of softness so far this year but it has yet to metastasize into a wide spread Property & Casualty disease. CB will be an excellent bellwether for the industry in that respect. When dealing with financials, the headline numbers can often be misleading so it is important to look at these other factors that demonstrate the underlying health of the corporate entity. We will be looking for numbers to support management's belief in the acquisition so that we can build more confidence around our investment thesis for the stock. Bloomberg's consensus forecast for the quarter is:· EPS: $2.57· Revenue $8.14 billion Note that figures quoted in the video may not be the same as numbers in the article. The data are sourced from Bloomberg and may change as analysts update their models prior to the report. This is part series of a series of preview videos released for the Q3 earnings season so please let us know if there is a stock you would like us to cover.
