This week on the show, we're taking time to remember. Memory is at the core of so much of Jewish life and tradition, especially during Passover. So we're sharing several stories about memories, from the individual to the collective, and from the difficult to the uplifting. Tablet writer Gabriel Sanders reads his essay about preparing for his first Passover without his father, who spent the last years of his life with Alzeimer's disease. (The version of Ma Lecha Hayam featured in this story is performed by Paul and Lila Shapiro.) Jenny Rozbruch, who designed our Unorthodox and Beautifully Jewish logos, shows us the handmade biography she made for her survivor grandmother whose memories had begun to fade. Producers Courtney Hazlett and Elie Bleier join photographer Ken Taranto as he documents the damage done to the south of Israel on October 7th, as well as the efforts to rebuild. Author Rebecca Sugar discusses her new novel, Everything Is a Little Broken, based heavily on caring for her dad as he ages. Around the world, food insecurity impacts far too many lives. As the war rages on, and hunger threatens so many inside and outside of Israel, the words of the Haggadah implore: “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” Before we sit down for our festive Passover meals, Unorthodox is shining a light on those who help make sure everyone has access to food, year-round. Producers Courtney Hazlett and Elie Bleier visit the Jerusalem food pantry of Meir Panim, which gives out meals to those in need, including many affected by October 7th and the war. We also meet Joseph Gitler, who founded Leket, Israel's National Food Bank, to rescue leftover food from farms and restaurants and distribute it to pantries, shelters, and now, temporary housing for displaced Israelis. Abby Leibman, president and CEO of MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, discusses the organization's efforts to fight hunger through national policy making both in the U.S. and Israel. This week, we're exploring the fire of anger as both a righteous reflection of our connection to the divine and something that must be tended to with compassion and care lest it become a fire of destruction. Join me for the forth episode in the Soul-Care Series for a ritual-like auditory journey through the fire element. I took a few RISKS in this episode, as I embodied the fire through my creation process. I was honest, I was direct, and the last chunk of air time is dedicated to a somatic attunement to the fire itself. I invite you to light a candle on your altar with me before you listen...and be prepared to DANCE. In this episode of the Soul-Care Series you will: Learn about the various qualities of fire as they ignite our anger, rage, personal power, and enthusiasm!Hear about my own challenges with fire and the ways I often "burn out" (and how I hold space for these patterns to move and express). Learn the polarity perspective on staying neutral, objective, curious, and yet related to the elements and the often difficult emotional qualities that show up as we explore what it means to be "spirit greatness having a human experience".Experience a poem on fire (at the very start of the episode) from my book which you can learn more about or purchase on Amazon here: The Soul-Care Workbook: A 33 Day Journey Through your Chakras and Elements Join me in a guided movement experience and receive a somatic attunement to FIRE Dance like nobodies watching.Resources mentioned in this episode:Go to elevationhive.com to learn more about in-person classes in polarity therapy and our monthly in-person dream circleCheck out my art at AmandaLux.comBuy my book The Soul-Care Workbook: A 33 Day Journey Through your Chakras and Elements Click here buy me a cup of coffee or show your support for this podcast. Before Shtisel and Unorthodox became Netflix hits, writer and director Rama Burshtein-Shai was pulling back the curtain on life and love in the ultra-Orthodox community. Following Burshtein's internationally acclaimed films “Fill the Void” and “The Wedding Plan,” comes her first venture into television, “Fire Dance.” On Haaretz Weekly, she talks to host Allison Kaplan Sommer about her efforts to give women in that community a voice and why she believes audiences find drama set in a world with such strict rules between men and women so compelling. “We look for boundaries to preserve our energy, to preserve our feelings. When the boundaries are not there and we're able to take everything we actually want, then we get bored,” Burshtein-Shai said. Earlier on the show, co-host Amir Tibon joins the podcast for a discussion of revelations in Jared Kushner's new memoir, which includes behind-the-scenes tension between former U.S. president Donald Trump and then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On today’s date in 1916, at the Teatro Real in Madrid, “Nights in the Gardens of Spain,” a new work by the Spanish composer, Manuel de Falla, received its first performance. The first night’s audience didn’t know quite what to make of it—was it a piano concerto or a tone poem? Whatever it was, they didn’t like it much, apparently, but there was at least one musician in the audience who did: the young Polish piano virtuoso, Artur Rubinstein. “I had the opportunity to hear the first performance,” wrote Rubinstein in his autobiography, “I fell in love with this work and offered to play it at the last symphony concert of the season. Being constantly on tour, I learned it by reading the score on trains. At the rehearsal I played it by heart. De Falla and the conductor, Arbos, were pleased, but again the public did not respond—the work was too complicated for them, and it ended in a dead pianissimo. Nevertheless, Arbos and I were applauded warmly” But Rubinstein knew just what was required to direct some of that applause back to the composer. “I played de Falla’s ‘Fire Dance’ as an encore,” recalled Rubinstein,” which produced the usual ovation.”

In this interview we ask Peter what it was like to have a household name as a father, what advice did his dad pass along to him, how did the shadow of his last name affect his childhood, and what went on behind the scenes at the Buffett family dinners. This unique upbringing and lessons learned are the foundation for his New York Times Bestselling book, Life Is What You Make It: Find Your Own Path to Fulfillment. Additionally, we discuss his esteemed music career which includes winning an Emmy Award and composing the most famous scene in the film Dances with Wolves.
