We're heading into the last leg of February's theme of WOMEN IN CRISIS and the mental state of women this month has been pretty rough. Imagine being a housewife in the 1970s and you're pretty much losing it. Sure, you can get away with being “eccentric” much of the time but eventually the mask slips and all the devotion in the world can't get in the way of the struggle. You can question the intensity and reactions of how love plays out, people certainly aren't their best, but love may win no matter how bad it gets. Even in the face of madness. We break the seal on John Cassavetes with his 1974 film “A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE” featuring intense and emotional performances by Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk. Middle class dynamics have never been more tense while at the same time, decompressed, as though we're an awkward guest peering on a marriage scene that we can't quite figure out. So long as they figure it out then maybe, just maybe, it can work out. Of course you can watch it online. Celebrated for bringing depth and nuance to roles ranging from a drug-addicted art dealer (High Art, Lisa Cholodenko, 1998), to a dying mother meeting her daughter for the first time (Monica, Andrea Pallaoro, 2023), Patricia Clarkson is no stranger to complex emotional terrain. Perhaps that is why she feels somewhat comfortable in the volatile world of A Woman Under the Influence, John Cassavettes' 1974 masterpiece. The film centers around Mabel Longhetti, brilliantly rendered by Gena Rowlands, as a deeply loving, profoundly unstable housewife and mother of three. We explore the extraordinary power and nuance of Rowland's performance, the layered collaboration of Cassavettes, Rowlands, and Falk, and learn the extent to which the film was indeed a family affair. For this iconic film, we could not ask for a better guide than the woman Cooper once dubbed the “Unofficial Queen of Sundance”, Patricia Clarkson. Hosted on Acast. I have some questions for you today. Questions that will serve you well to ponder upon as their answers will be the key that unlocks your truth... Who have you decided you needed to be in order for you to be granted permission to live your best life to be your best self to create your best art? What is the title the level of success you've told yourself you need to achieve in order for you to deserve to be worthy of the very best of the best? What I've come to realise Darling is there is no THERE where you will ever FEEL that which you don't OWN for yourself HERE. Nobody has authority over you not your momma not your daddy not the preacher nor the teacher not those who have appointed themselves as your mentors and gurus who will ever have the influence appointed by the Creator as the Creator which is You. In this you will find your worth you will find the truth of who you are of what you are from which the choice to make is whether you're going to take full responsibility through intentional focus and decision to live your legacy in the now or if you will continue to negate your sovereignty putting it falsely on another whilst still creating contrast and suffering in infantile submission to fear consciousness which is all it is my friend. Today I invite you to tap into the frequency of your operating consciousness and ask yourself: Am I choosing under the influence of Divine Love or am I under the influence of collective fear? For when you're choosing the frequency of Divine Love you CHOOSE to BE she who leads from Self she who lives artistically she who takes sovereign responsibility for her power of influence on the creation of All That Is she who focus with intentionality she who casts spells of abundance, strength and richness she who lives her legacy: unleashed, unlimited, unapologetic. In this the third part of an ongoing 70s cinema series I discuss the treatment of emotions -from detached humor, to intimate domesticity. More on this Funky Friday, Here: Seventies cinema is, above all else, about the undiluted, raw and immediate expression of human feelings in all of their authenticity. The emotions I have in mind are not only those of the characters in the films but the attitudes too of the filmmakers. The films see this expression as far more important than any solution or conclusion about what to do with any of these feelings. This feature of 70s cinema is not for everybody, of course, but gives them their distinctiveness, across differences of genres and budgets. Interestingly, humor and comedy is one of the ways they accomplish this - in addition to unsparing episodes of intense melodrama. Rather than seeing these two modes as mere opposites I will show how they interact with one another, through the powers given to actors and radical tonal shifts within given films and, most unusually inside of single scenes. Examples I discuss include Taxi Driver, A Woman Under The Influence, Nashville, Between The Lines , The Conversation and more to be announced.   #1970s #cassavetes #boston #cinema #francisfordcoppola #lindsaycrouse #jeffgoldblum #jilleikenberry #mariluhenner #gwenwelles #johnheard #scorsese #robertdeniro #paulschrader #genehackman #allengarfield #genarowlands #peterfalk #joanmicklinsilver #robertaltman #michaelmurphy #nyc #johncazale  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mitch-hampton/support

O filme da vez é "Uma Mulher Sob Influência" (A Woman Under The Influence, 1974), um drama realista e carregado de sentimentos, sobre a vida de um casal de classe operária, suas lutas do dia a dia e a loucura. This week, I was so pleased to welcome a new friend to the podcast. An actor and an acting teacher in his native Canada, Robert Bellissimo has appeared in numerous television shows, feature films, commercials, and plays. Two recent credits include PRIVATE EYES starring Jason Priestly and ROBBERY, which starred Art Hindle as well.A passionate cinephile for twenty years, in his late twenties, he realized he wanted to explore storytelling in a more in-depth way. When the Covid-19 lockdown began in March of 2020, he took advantage of his free time and created his high-quality YouTube Channel Robert Bellissimo at the Movies. Reviewing and introducing viewers to some of cinema's greatest films, over the past two years, he's interviewed many industry professionals who work in and around theatre, TV, and/or film, including yours truly who's been honored to appear on the channel twice - the first to discuss Scorsese's GOODFELLAS and more recently, returning to tackle Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS as well.Joining me to discuss the life and career of his favorite filmmaker John Cassavetes, in this in-depth feature-length episode, we focus on the beginning, middle, and end of Cassavetes' oeuvre in the form of SHADOWS, A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE, and LOVE STREAMS. Additionally sprinkling in throughout our conversation some of the director's thoughts on filmmaking, acting, men, women, and life in general, this is an episode that I hope Cassavetes devotees will love.Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music ArchiveLogo: Kate Gabrielle - KateGabrielle.comOriginally Posted on Patreon (8/17/22) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/70659691

Talking About John Cassavetes' 1974 film ‘A Woman Under the Influence with our guest Tami ReikerIn this episode of Movies We Like, we're joined by award-winning cinematographer Tami Reiker to talk about one of her favorite movies, John Cassavetes' 1974 film A Woman Under the Influence. This is a film Tami has often shown to directors she's worked with as they discuss the projects that influence them and what they want to pull from it to bring in as influences on the project. It's a powerful film that's full of incredible moments brought by both leads – Gena Rowlands and Peter Falk – not to mention fascinating direction by Cassavetes himself. How has it influenced Tami over her career and what does she pull from it?Tami's Current Project Surface on Apple TV+We also talk about the new series she's worked on with director Sam Miller and star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Surface. For the episodes she worked on, Tami and Miller wanted to use swing shift lenses to amplify the disconnection Mbatha-Raw's character has from the world due to post-accident amnesia. It's a powerful tool and connects directly with their authorial voice. There's a lot to talk about with Tami about both A Woman Under the Influence and Surface on The Speakeasy. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel's Discord channel!About TamiAward-winning cinematographer Tami Reiker, ASC, made history by becoming the first woman to win an American Society of Cinematographers award. She took home the ASC Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography Award for her work on the HBO pilot, Carnivalé. Reiker recently worked on the highly anticipated new Apple TV+ series Surface starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and created by Veronica West, bringing together innovative technology and breathtaking visuals for the first two episodes of the psychological thriller, each with director Sam Miller. She also lensed Regina King's directorial debut One Night In Miami, chronicling a fictional account of a real night when the lives of Cassius Clay, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown and Malcolm X are forever changed. The drama already made history at the 2020 Venice Film Festival as the first film directed by a Black woman to be selected and is also an official selection at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.Previously, Reiker photographed the action epic The Old Guard for Netflix and frequent collaborator director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Based on the graphic novel series of the same name, the film follows a group of immortal soldiers who must defeat a corrupt man trying to expose their secret. The feature shattered records after its release, becoming one of the top ten most streamed films in Netflix's history, with Prince-Bythewood becoming the first Black female director to land a spot on the list.Reiker's additional feature credits include: Beyond the Lights for Gina Prince-Bythewood, starring Minnie Driver, Danny Glover and Gugu Mbatha-Raw; the critically praised Pieces of April for director Peter Hedges; and High Art, a visual collaboration with director Lisa Cholodenko, which earned Reiker a Best Cinematography nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards. For television, Reiker lensed: episode one of Woman of The Movement, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood; HBO Max's Delilah pilot for director James Griffiths; Marvel's Cloak and Dagger pilot; CBS's Charmed pilot, with director Brad Silberling; the pilot for Fox's Shots Fired, the critically praised ten-part series chronicling the investigation of a police shooting; and HBO's Getting On pilot for director Miguel Arteta. After beginning her career and making a name for herself in the New York film community, Reiker moved to Los Angeles where she still lives now, with her son. "Shadows," is life at and around the party, what happens in social settings and how those dynamics function as a part of daily life. "Faces" is the after party. What happens when the party is over, but there is still that need to be out there and how do we deal with strange situations and people that only seem to exist in the wee small hours of the morning. In "A Woman Under The Influence,"  the party is over and all you are left with is the crushing banality of daily life. There are good times, but there are also a lot of bad times. Very bad times. Times where the air is just sucked out of the room and you struggle to make sense of any of it. So... what is life after the party ends? First and foremost... Gina Rowlands is so good in this movie that it almost hurts. It is literally impossible to put into words. The world she lives in is messy. She is unhinged and lacks any real moorings to steady her. Peter Falk is harrowing to say the least. This movie is hard to watch. It's a parade of characters who don't know what to do, don't really want to be doing what they're doing, and have no idea where what their goal should be. This is a standout film, incredibly shot and acted, solidly paced and written, and you almost feel like you need a shower when it ends. But don't let that dissuade you from taking the next step on our journey through the world of John Cassavetes. Next Week: We inch closer to the end with...
