Use President Hinckley's advice about things all converts/members need: A friend (10:47) If someone is sitting alone, it's ok to ask if they'd like someone to sit by them. But it's also ok if they want to sit alone. Inviting them is more important. Are there things that you only invite other families to? Or other couples? Single people usually want to be included in those things too. This builds deeper connections. It's important to know as a single member that someone thinks of you and is concerned for your welfare (especially in a pandemic) Also If you are a single member and feeling overlooked it's important to speak up! Story of no ministering priesthood assigned. Responsibilities: What calling should a single person have? Any calling! Get to the individual! Story of New Member Meetings. “Callings are an anchor to the ward.” Nurturing with the good word of God: Home-Centered Church Supported…. Globally single wards not available It's up to the individuals in the areas that have them. It's also important that they be allowed to choose, not told where to attend. 30:00 Story of “You're NOT welcome here”; figure out the “warm hand-off” 32:00 What do good-intentioned people say to singles in the church, that they should stop saying? Check your blind spots: do you have biases or superficial relationships? The single members don't want to be labeled or lumped into groups. Get rid of the “ites.” Men will often refuse to meet with single women, especially in their homes. It's smart to be cautious, but it's also important to be thoughtful and kind. Sometimes there's a hierarchy that is referenced that single lives are “less than or less celestial” than married lives. They don't need pity or assumptions that they don't live up to their covenants. Read Elder Gong's GC talk “Room in the Inn.” 37:28 Have you noticed improvements in the way Single Adults are treated over the last few years? In GC talks, for sure! It's cultural to have “menace to society talks” that needs to stop. Most people engage in the self-similarity principle: we need to step out of that. “Can't we just treat all people like they are individuals?” 40:17 Are the needs of the single/divorced/widowed etc. treated differently? In short yes. It's important to remember that we will never become one in Christ if we keep defining people by their differences. Dave is a university professor at The Ross School of Business and the co-founder of The RBL Group. A renowned author and speaker, he is also a Thought Partner on Leadership and Organization. In this episode, he and Mike talk about becoming great leaders by embracing change. To create an environment that allows people to bring their whole selves to the workplace, we have to focus on relationships. [1:40] People want three things at work: to belong, to become, and to believe. Employees want to feel a sense of purpose and fulfillment, they want to learn and grow, and they want to be connected to a community. These three elements are the foundation of a positive employee experience. When we connect the metrics of belief, belonging, and becoming we create an environment where people can thrive. [5:20] The nature of becoming is change. "To become is to learn to experiment, to get out of my comfort zone, to not be afraid of failure, to relish the opportunity to fail, to continuously improve,” Dave shares with Mike. [9:01] Dave gives valuable insights about incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into the workplace in phases. The first phase is through affirmative action; phase two is incorporating diversity and inclusion into HR programs which would include unconscious bias training, and phase three is succession planning with diversity. The strategy is to innovate through diversity. [14:24] Leaders must look at leadership as a way to empower others. The job of a leader is not to exercise power but to share the power that they have and empower employees to reach their fullest potential. [16:34] Creating an open environment means learning and growing from each other. “One of the most powerful opportunities is to start conversations and to share and create safe spaces,” Dave says. It is a journey and not an event: this is a heart change and a heart change takes a long time. [21:00] Personalized leadership is how we show care, and the more we do this, the more we help unlock our employees' full potential. This is the type of leadership that changes organizations, hearts, and behaviors. [24:17] HR leaders should be asking employees how they feel, what their experience that day was like, and what they did that day that helped a customer have a better experience. Wendy Ulrich, PhD, MBA, has been a practicing psychologist for over twenty years, and is the co-author with Dave Ulrich of the Wall Street Journal best seller, The Why of Work: How Great Leaders Build Abundant Organizations that Win (2010, McGraw Hill), as well as other books on personal change including Forgiving Ourselves: Getting Back Up When We Let Ourselves Down and Weakness is Not Sin: The Liberating Distinction that Awakens our Strengths. She is the founder of Sixteen Stones Center for Growth, providing seminar-retreats on personal growth and creating an abundant life, and she is a learning partner with the RBL Group. She has taught psychology at Brigham Young University, and is a fellow and former president of the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists. I like to say that I am a recovering perfectionist.  Forgiving ourselves it about allowing yourself some grace to do what Wendy says, quoting Beverly Flanigan: giving up the hope of ever having a better past.  Just move on from where you are, and do enough to make progress with what tools and skills you have. Wendy says that "mental health is the ability to respond to what really is from our deepest values."  That's what I'm learning.  When I think about forgiveness, the words that come to my mind are meekness and humility, faith, vulnerability, and trust.  In order to apologize legitimately, we need to be humble, open and vulnerable.  That vulnerability is not weakness, but it opens us up to be trusted, and to be forgiven. Wendy tells a cool story about a couple working to overcome the husband's addiction, and another about her willingness to help her young son stop hitting. She shares some tips on how to apologize and how to strengthen the family with forgiveness. I liked what Wendy says about weakness not being a sin.  I think it can be compared to what Brené Brown says in her books about shame - that shame is not the same as guilt.  Guilt means 'I did something bad' while shame is ' I AM bad.' When you think your weakness is a sin, you feel ashamed and you may not feel like you can change so easily, if at all.  But feeling guilty means you can overcome the weakness with time and effort.  Guilt is an invitation to change something that you feel bad about, and that's OK.  Shame, on the other hand, may suppress the feelings that compel change because you assume change is not possible.  Weakness is just a natural part of being human.  When weaknesses are pointed out, it doesn't have to be shameful.  It's just an invitation for growth. What does it take to reach the top in HR? What knowledge and abilities are necessary for successful HR professionals? For nearly 30 years, the Human Resource competency study has addressed this question. The RBL Group and the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan along with multiple research partners have collaborated once again to fund and coordinate a global Human Resources competency study, the largest global study on HR competencies. The results of 2016 HR Competency Model: Round 7 of the study will help to continue to shape the future of HR and further define the contributions that make HR a business success, particularly by studying HR competencies aligned with intangible business matters. Mike Ulrich, one of the co-directors of the study, is a statistician at The RBL Group and Assistant Professor of Management at Utah State University.
