How To Design An Appraisal Process

The HR Uprising Podcast

Inspired by discussion on one of our forums, this week's HR Uprising Podcast episode is all about how to design an appraisal process. Lucinda shares easily-actionable, practical steps - from pre-planning considerations to execution. Thus, giving you the best ways to design an appraisal process that works for you and your organisation. KEY TAKEAWAYS Consider what the current situation is, and think about why you want to change it. Do you already have some kind of appraisal process in place, and if so, what is the problem that are trying to fix? Look at the environment and culture that currently makes up your organisation. Certainly, this will have an impact on how open and responsive people are to complexity and process. Furthermore, we must consider the basic need for appraisal in the first place. What purpose does it serve? Are we looking to improve strategic positions, or simply to increase engagement? In terms of designing the appraisal form, give consideration to the language being used. Is it a backward-looking form, or something more progressive and forward-looking. Indeed, we must give feedback on past achievements as well as provide clear goals for the future. BEST MOMENTS ‘Just because you're very familiar with something, doesn't mean that other people are familiar with it' 'Simplify rather than complicate' 'Simply changing a form or process isn't going to fix the problem' ‘Managing people does require us to talk to them more than once a year' VALUABLE RESOURCES Join the HR Uprising LinkedIn Group The host of the HR Uprising Podcast, Lucinda Carney, is also the founder and CEO of Actus Software, and author of the best-selling book 'How to be a Change Superhero'. This podcast reflects on two significant individuals whose lives have embodied the role of a leader in a manner that is insightful for us all. The comments made by those who worked with them have been profound and Rob reflects on the huge significance of these leaders amongst men. KEY TAKEAWAYS Eric Harrison I only really became aware of him after the class of 92 had been instrumental in the success of Manchester United. He was mentioned as the coach involved with the up and coming youth players but when you see the power of the words written by people about Eric you realise he was something profoundly special. Sir Alex Ferguson has stated that he was one of the greatest coaches of our time. ‘He was able to make good human beings out of young players’ It is significant that he talks about how to make good human beings. Eric is credited with building character and determination and being a teacher who offered choices and lit the path through his own hard work and sacrifice. In the many comments made, there are no references to tactical work. It’s all about Eric Harrison’s ability and influence in areas not connected with football. He was concerned about life both on and off the pitch and many have stated that they owe him everything. This man is everything that we aim as leaders, managers and coaches to be, he prepared those in his care to become excellent human beings. This man embodied his passion and cared about those he was involved with. He instilled principles in them that they have carried for life. Gordon Banks Heralded by Pele as not only a great and magical goalkeeper but also so much more, a fine human being and friend Even those who were from a different generation recognised the impact and role he played in the football profession. He kept in contact with his former teammates perpetuating their camaraderie and friendship over the years. He was a great man who demonstrated great integrity and humility throughout his life He faced the significant challenges of being let go as a youngster and a career-changing injury following a car accident. He is defined by the fact that he didn’t give up, he believed in his passion for football and got on with what was in front of him. Thank you Thanks to both of you, if we as leaders, managers and coaches can move closer to being like you will be moving in the right direction. BEST MOMENTS ‘He was able to make good human beings out of young players’ 'I was profoundly affected by some of the comments I read ‘He made us understand about respecting each other not only on the pitch but off it also’ 'There’s a lesson in life about that’ 'He was the man who made us’ 'Simply catching the ball, Banksy always seemed to be in the right place at the right time’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://www.amazon.co.uk/Habits-Highly-Effective-People-Powerful/dp/1455892823 https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/leader-manager-coach-podcast/id1370481271?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST Rob Ryles is a UEFA A licensed coach with a League Managers Association qualification and a science and medicine background. This week on ... For the People... law in plain language with Debra D. Rainey, Esq. The Pain within! Suicide Awareness & Prevention When People talk about killing themselves they probably have at the very least thought about it.  Folk who look  for or research ways to kill themselves, or  folks who  make comments about life not being worth  living, are screaming out for help, will you be there for them? Suicide is one of the top leading causes of death  for every age group, gender, and ethnicity.  The FTP FAM dispelled some myths about suicide and discussed risk factors and warning signs for  which loved ones and families must be on guard.  One of our listeners shared his rather narrow/unenlightened view of therapy and its  usefulness & necessity for Black Folks.
