Episode 112. It's official. It is here. This week's episode is all about the new podcast, The Innovative Therapist Podcast. This name and shifting of the podcast reflects my internal shifts, and who I am becoming and permission for all of us to think more creatively with regards to how we think about healing. In this episode, I will tell you what to expect in the new podcast. What will be different and what will be the same. I will also share how I am different, and some of the experiences and people that led to those shifts. I cannot wait to share it with you! What to Expect in this episode: My reason for changing the name of the podcast to The Innovative Therapist Podcast Who it is geared towards (FYI: it isn't just for therapists, but for anyone interested in thinking deeply and creatively about innovative approaches to healing) Why I am probably not going to be recording in the same space anymore, and why How the shifts you see in this podcast and other aspects of my business reflect internal shifts happening in me, and me learning to listen to and trust my body more and more (aka "walking the walk," if you will) What to expect in the future (e.g., more interviews with therapists who have paved their way and began doing meaningful work outside of the traditional 1 on 1 client work, among other creative guests and solo topics), more interviews with therapists and other professionals willing to challenge the status quo and question our traditional way of doing things (e.g., like my conversation with Dr. Adia Gooden a long time ago where we talked about sharing about ourselves as psychologists and how it's so different than what we learned to do in training) The book I'm reading right now, Decolonizing Therapy by Dr. Jennifer Mullan, and what I'm learning from it so far and how it's helping me think creatively about our role as helping professionals and some of the reasons the traditional therapy model never felt quite right to me (and how this book is adding to the learning I got from reading Decolonizing Wellness by Dalia Kinsey, Check out my conversation with Dalia Kinsey to explore this) How and why I'll be continuing to explore evidence-based approaches as well as other "alternative" healing modalities (with less official research backing, but equally as important explore with an open mind) What I'm thinking in terms of the motivation questions at the end, and the music for the podcast, and how I'm letting a lot of this evolve naturally (and how incredibly different that is from my prior approaches) Things coming up in my world that I'm excited about! The Innovative Therapist podcast is for you if you want honest conversations about what works and what doesn't for learning to trust our bodies and doing deeply healing work (for our clients and ourselves) It's about having honest conversations with therapists and other professionals about their journeys and how they learned to listen to themselves and pursue work that felt deeply meaningful and energizing to them “I know I shouldn't focus on weight loss, but…” (Polarized Parts Alert!) About Our Guest Adia Gooden is a clinical psychologist, speaker, and coach who specializes in helping high-achieving individuals reconnect with their inherent worthiness. She is the creator of the Unconditionally Worthy Group Coaching Program and works with corporate audiences to promote self-worth and well-being. Summary Adia Gooden joins the podcast to discuss the concept of self-worth and how it is often tied to external accomplishments. She shares her personal experience of feeling empty and unworthy even after achieving her goals, and emphasizes that accomplishments alone cannot provide a deep sense of worthiness. Adia explores the societal and cultural factors that contribute to this mindset and explains how individuals can free themselves from the need for external validation. She offers practical tips for shifting the focus from achievement to self-compassion and self-love, and highlights the importance of redefining one's worth based on intrinsic qualities rather than external achievements. Adia also addresses the challenges faced in a corporate setting and provides strategies for maintaining a healthy sense of self-worth while pursuing professional goals. Key Takeaways: Achievements alone cannot provide a deep sense of worthiness. Self-worth is often tied to external accomplishments due to societal and cultural conditioning. Reconnecting with one's inherent worthiness involves freeing oneself from external validation and embracing self-compassion and self-love. It is possible to pursue professional goals while maintaining a healthy sense of self-worth by prioritizing self-care and setting boundaries. Quotes: "We all long for unconditional love, but we don't necessarily offer it to ourselves very often." "Reconnecting to this truth of who we are, because I don't believe that anything you could have done and anything you could have gone through can take away that inherent worthiness." "You can still have goals, but how do you go about them? Do you go about these goals by not letting yourself sleep, treating your body poorly, not making time for movement, eating food that doesn't really nourish you, beating yourself up over every mistake?" "Decoupling oneself from labor and capitalism is revolutionary, especially for black people who have a history of being enslaved and forced into labor." "We have to shift our nervous system regulation. We have to be willing to be uncomfortable in the space and the rest until it gets comfortable because it will." Today, we delve into the groundbreaking work of Dr. Adia Gooden, a licensed clinical psychologist focusing on unconditional self-worth, imposter syndrome, and Black women and mental health. And, we'll hear about Gloria Feldt's efforts with Take The Lead and the ambitious goal of achieving gender parity by 2025.  Let's start by talking about the gender gaps in self-esteem and power. These gaps still persist in our society, affecting various marginalized groups, especially women and in particular, Black, Indigenous and women of color. The self-esteem gap refers to the disparity in how individuals perceive their worth and value, and it can have significant implications for personal and professional growth. On the other hand, the power gap refers to the uneven distribution of decision-making authority and influence between genders. As we continue our program today, think about how you would rate your won self esteem and your power, or decision making authority and influence. Is it strong? Is it where you want it to be? One researcher who has been shedding light on this issue is Dr. Adia Gooden. She has focused her work on understanding self-worth and its impact on mental health, particularly among black women. Dr. Gooden's research highlights the unique challenges faced by black women in society and the importance of fostering self-esteem and self-worth for overall well-being. Her work serves as a powerful reminder of the need to address these disparities and to support the leaders doing this work. Now, let's shift our attention to Gloria Feldt, a renowned author and activist who has made it her mission to achieve gender parity by 2025. She co-founded Take The Lead, an organization that empowers women to embrace leadership roles and break through barriers that have held them back. You also may remember her as the former head of Planned Parenthood at the national level. Feldt's efforts have been instrumental in advocating for equal opportunities for women and challenging systemic biases. TODAY'S GUEST   Today, we talk about worthiness.   Worthiness, and the lack of it, is something that's been a primary part of my struggles to start sharing more of my thoughts and beliefs, to allow myself to assume a leadership role in business and in other areas, and to search for an enduring romantic relationship.   Lack of worthiness seems to be at the root of perfectionism, workaholism, fear of failure, and fear of success. It's often the stumbling block in feeling a sense of well-being and belonging with others.   The topic of worthiness is really hard to unpack, or it was for me, because it is distinct from self-confidence. Throughout most of my life, I've been fairly confident in my abilities to do things or figure them out. In fact, I think too often I used confidence as a way to escape the fact that I didn't like myself that much.   It is only in my late 30s and early 40s that I feel my sense of self-worth is starting to catch up to my sense of confidence.   Worthiness is also one of these foundational topics that seems connected to almost everything in the world that I care about. It's at the core of belonging and othering, political inclusion or exclusion, status and privilege in society, religious and political extremism, online trolling, sexism, good and bad leadership, and the global decline of democracy.   That's why I'm so happy to be talking to Dr. Adia Gooden today. Adia is a clinical psychologist and a TED speaker who works in the area of unconditional self-worth and helps people to embrace it. Adia is also an author and the host of her very own podcast called Unconditionally Worthy. Adia gained her bachelor's at Stanford and her PhD at DePaul University, and worked at the Counseling Center of University of Chicago.   Today, she works as a speaker and coach, and is working on a new book in the making about the mental health of black women.   I spoke to Adia in early November, and I was excited to talk to her since I saw her powerful TED Talk on the subject of worthiness. Adia is an energizing and empowering speaker, so it was a joy to chat with her and hear her insights as well as practical advice that can help us feel better about ourselves.   EPISODE SUMMARY   In this conversation we talk about: What growing up feeling lonely as a child instilled in her. What's wrong with trying to be perfect? What is worthiness, and how self-worth is different from self-confidence? Why is worthiness important? The rise of depression and anxiety. The effects of COVID, as well as social media and phone addiction. How to systematically improve our self-worth. What does the journey of self-worth look like? What's an imposter syndrome, and is it good or bad for us? How are worthiness and spirituality connected? What's the connection between worthiness and human dignity? And how she'd like to change the narrative of black women's mental health in the US.   What stayed with me from this conversation is how relatively straightforward and systematic our approach to self-worthiness can be. Following a relatively simple formula of self-forgiveness and acceptance, we can confront our feelings of unworthiness and start building a stronger foundation. And the effects of that can cascade throughout our lives, whether it's our professional lives, our family life, our relationships, and how we feel moment to moment.   This conversation is one of a dozen or so weekly conversations we already have lined up for you with hackers, designers, thinkers, makers, authors, entrepreneurs, and activists who are working to change our world for the better. Worried they won't buy? How to choose your best-selling, gotta-have-it digital course topic.  The first digital course I ever created was on how to launch a book using social media. And when I finally launched my first-ever course into the world...it was a huuuuge flop.  I made a whopping $267 -- and I cried about it.  In retrospect, I can tell you my fatal flaw. I chose the entirely wrong digital course topic. Today, I've created and launched 8 successful digital courses that have generated over 35 million dollars in 12 years -- all because I finally chose the right digital course topic...one that my audience wanted and got them results. And I'm here to save you from the heartache I experienced during that first launch. Because choosing the right digital course topic is foundational to making sure that your audience will buy.  More specifically, the promise that you make in your digital course must get them the results that will make the most impact. But more on that in a sec... If you have zero digital course topic ideas...  ...or maybe you have a million topic ideas and couldn't possibly choose one ...or maybe you're totally stuck by thoughts like, “Honestly, what would I teach? I'm no expert.” ...this episode is for you. (Click for the episode and some serious course topic inspo!)  In it, you'll hear from six of my students, and they'll break down digital course topics that are working in the online space in real life, how they came up with their course topic, any hiccups they encountered along the way… and so much more.  Digital course topics like my student Braden's.  Braden's an attorney and tax pro who chose to teach online entrepreneurs how to legally set up their business so they could get back to the things they're really, really good at.  The result? A flexible income that allows him to spend the kind of time with his loved ones. Or Hilary Kreuger who, after years as a stay-at-home mom, created her digital course teaching communication and personal development online.  5 figures in revenue later, she's still a busy mom of 4...but now, she's bringing home the bacon. You'll hear about topics ranging from spirituality to marketing to travel and more. So no matter what industry you're in, audience you serve, experience you bring to the table, or how “ready” you feel to teach a digital course, this episode is brimming with course topic inspo to get you well on your way to choosing yours. You've got this! Here's a glance at this episode... [04:56] Adia Gooden has been a licensed clinical psychologist for ten years. She wanted to help more people and have more impact, so she created the You Are Unconditionally Worthy Course. Adia made over $26,000 on her first launch.  [09:58] Braden Drake is a small business attorney who created Legally Launched. His first launch generated $8,000. He has since made more courses and revenue while being able to spend time with those he loves most. [14:51] Hilary Krueger is a super mom who created a course called Talk Email to Me, and generated over $11,000 in revenue. She came up with the idea for the course when people kept telling her that they loved her emails.  [18:13] Sandra McLemore created the Travel Marketing Revolution digital course, showing travel advisors how to get new clients online. This has allowed her to build a 7-figure business.  [22:46] Scarlett Cochran helps professional women create streams of income to supplement their revenue and achieve financial freedom. She has generated multiple six figures with her courses. [26:08] Anne Marie Pizarrio was a nurse by trade but wanted to make a change. She launched her own holistic practice, and her course about Becoming an Akashic Records Guide and generated $10,000. Click here to listen! This is a very important topic that frankly, all humans need to hear about. I bet this isn't the first time you've heard someone talk about the importance of valuing your worth. Maybe you've heard messages about cultivating self-love and compassion. Maybe you even watched the Sturt Smalley SNL skit and tried saying affirmations to yourself. "I'm good enough. I'm smart enough. And doggone it, people like me!" (Video linked here for your viewing pleasure). Our internal sense of being good enough and worthy of love and belonging is one of the strong traits that can heavily influence our life trajectory and how we handle challenging situations. My guest today is an expert who focuses on helping people discover their self-worth and be their own heroes. Throughout today's episode, we dive into what self-worth is, how it relates to overcoming mental health challenges, and what we can do to develop our self-worth and ultimately be our own heroes.Unconditional Self-worth – When Adia was a child, she had struggled with social interactions, and that made her try to be perfect in many aspects, and it ultimately made her feel unworthy. Later in life, Adia realized that many people are trying to prove their worth with achievements, which made them struggle with self-worth. We talk about the story of Adia coming to this realization about unconditional self-worth.Self-esteem and Self-worth – Adia talks about how these two concepts differ from each other, how they affect our lives and our feelings.Depression and Self-worth – Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, and low self-worth is one of the factors that work as a catalyst to depression. Adia talks about how low self-worth contributes to depression and how to reduce the impact of low self-worth.The Four Practices – Adia recommends four practices that help us improve our self-worth. We dive deep into each of these practices and how we can implement them in our lives.Being our own Hero – When our life struggles sometimes lead us to feel unworthy about ourselves, we tend to get caught up in a victim mentality. We dive into Adia's concept of being our own hero, which helps us get out of that victim mentality and empower ourselves.  Resources:Connect with Dr. Adia:Website: dradiagooden.com TEDx Talk: ted.com/talks/adia_gooden_cultivating_unconditional_self_worth Podcast: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/unconditionally-worthy-podcast/id1551723745Mentioned in the episode:WHO face sheet on Depression: www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/depression
