This episode features a writer who would be familiar not only to Hull residents but also to keen telly watchers, radio listeners and theatre goers across the country. Alan Plater was born in Jarrow in 1935 but having moved to Hull when he was just three years old, the city was pleased to adopt him and he lived there for much of his life. His most famous writing credit was probably Z Cars. Alan Plater was also a huge fan of jazz music and his ITV comedy drama The Beiderbecke Affair staring James Bolam and Barbara Flynn in the mid 1980s was a massive success. He went on to win countless awards and accolades for his wonderful writing. Alan Plater was enormously generous with his time, and made a huge contribution to the Hull arts scene of the 1960s and 70s, developing a gentle friendship with Philip Larkin along the way. This speech was recorded on 28th November 1998, and was given at that year's PLS AGM. Thank you so much to Alexandra Cann who is the agent for the Alan Plater Literary Estate Ltd for giving us the initial approval to use this recording, and to Steve Plater and John Rubinstein who are the joint Directors of the Lit Estate. If you are interested in seeing an Alan Plater play this summer, then the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough is putting on a production of the Blonde Bombshells of 1943 which is full of swing and jazz, from 2-26th August 2023. https://sjt.uk.com/events/blonde-bombshells-of-1943 References: Alfred Bradley https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/about/successes/alfred-bradley-award/ · The Occasional Smell of Fish (poem) · Waiting for Gladys (Becket parody) · Bete Noire (Hull poetry journal) · Z Cars One Day In Spring Street · Jazz Notes- BBC radio programme · On Sunday January 4th I had Mild Constipation · Names (poem written for Three Trawlers fundraising) ‘my only grown up poem' · Swallows on the Water (play) · The Fosdyke Saga sonnet ( BBC radio tripe themed -parody of The Forsyth Saga,)- sent a copy to Larkin who responded with a signed copy of the High Windows calling him ‘sonnetteer extraordinaire' · Sweet Sorrow (1990) Plater's play about Larkin Matthew Arnold, Ogden Nash, Dylan Thomas, Alan Bleasdale, Ted Hughes, Barry Hines, Vera Wise, Henry Livings, Alex Glasgow, Carla Lane, Adrian Mitchell, Allan Ginsburg, Carole Mills (rude songs and low down blues), Robin Kay (flamenco guitarist), Max Boylett (jazz pianist), Ian Clarke and Chris Rowe, Sid and Norm (artists without category), Joe Orton, The Beatles, John Ford (director of westerns), Roger McGough, Jimmy James (music hall performer),Ken Wagstaff- (footballing hero), Fleur Adcock, Jeff Nuttall (had a pee in a bucket on stage), Roni Scott, Suzi Quatro, Mike Bradwell (theatre director), Jess Stacy (jazz pianist), Shakespeare, Max Wall, Peter Brooke (director), and many more Hull poets listed by Plater. If you've had the pleasure of driving north out of Sydney, you would have driven over the Hawkesbury River Bridge in Mooney Mooney, on the Central Coast. If you were paying attention, you would have noticed a small island to your left. Despite being seemingly insignificant, the island has a rich history. Luke chats with Author Adrian Mitchell about the islands significance to the local indigenous community, the horrors that occurred when it was a hospital for people with mental illnesses and what his thoughts are on the NSW government granting ownership to the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The 30th annual INURA Conference entitled "Small State Big Transitions” was held in Luxembourg from June 25 to 28. Over 60 participants gathered at the conference to learn about the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and to celebrate the 30 years INURA. This year's conference was organised by the Urban Studies Group at the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Luxembourg. With a population of just over 600,000, Luxembourg is a small, multilingual, sovereign state. But these diminutive attributes belie a cosmopolitan space where daily life frequently involves using three languages, and encountering perhaps four, five or six. Exhilarating and bewildering, it speaks to the 'small-but-global' urbanisation the country has experienced in recent decades. The conference opened with city tours that explored the range of challenges and contradictions that constitute this complex urban space which elides various categories: a small state, city-state, multilingual sovereign nation, European capital, financial capital, international business hub, and cross-border (sub)urban region. In addition to being the 30th year anniversary celebration of INURA, the Luxembourg conference was the first in-person meeting of the network since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Spread over three days of lively discussion, the conference played host to a variety of topics from climate crisis and social justice, to movements and Marxism, and the role of financial markets in housing and urban development. The conference also played host to the screening of the films ‘How Poles Became White' by Tino Bucholz and ‘The Truth lies in Rostock' by Mark Saunders. The podcast features fragments of interviews and reflections from INURA Luxembourg attendees. The podcast begins with the recital of Adrian Mitchell's poem Ancestors and ends with Leon Rosselson's song, The World Turned Upside Down, both recited by Chris Tranchell, and featuring a violin improvisation by Philipp Klaus. The INURA 2023 conference will take place in Zurich.

Peter Whitehead was an innovative English writer and filmmaker who documented the counterculture in London and New York in the late 1960s. His film Wholly Communion captured The International Poetry Incarnation, a groundbreaking event at The Royal Albert Hall in 1965 that was to prove pivotal in the evolution of the underground scene. The film featured poetry readings by Beat poets including Allen Ginsberg, Michael Horovitz, Adrian Mitchell and Lawrence Ferlinghetti and established Whitehead as the London counterculture's 'Man With a Movie Camera'. Film event producer Marek Pytel walks us through Whtehead's life and work including the iconic 'Tonite Let's All Make Love in London' documentary that helped define the "swinging London" scene of the sixties with psychedelic performances and interviewees including Pink Floyd, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Mick Jagger, Vanessa Redgrave, Lee Marvin, Julie Christie, Allen Ginsberg, Eric Burdon, Michael Caine and many others. We hear how Whitehead went onto film with The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix and to make provocative work about the countercultural protest movement in late 60s New York before making an extraordinary career swerve. For More on Marek Pytel's work see www.realityfilm.co.uk For more on the Bureau of Lost Culture www.bureauoflostculture.com

"HOLD THE PRESSES! This just in..." Episode 19 of The Words Are Not Enough is a Bond 25 Emergency News Update! In this episode Griffin (@griffschiller) and Brody (@brodyserravalli) discuss the following:1. Bond 25 has found a DP* Earlier in the week, Variety's Kristopher Tapley broke the story that Academy Award-winning Swedish DP, Linus Sandgren (best know for La La Land and First Man) will be joining Bond 25 as Director of Photography, saying "It appears Linus Sandgren is shooting the next Bond". IndieWire has now confirmed this story, citing Sandgren himself as their source. 2. Seydoux to return* The Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye reported that Cary Fukunaga had confirmed Lea Seydoux's return to the franchise, offering the concise comment "Lea will be returning".* Variety's Justin Kroll then corroborated Bamigboye's reporting, stating that a source had confirmed the story to Variety. * What this return could mean for 25 (continuation of Spectre's story) * What kind of role will Madeleine play in the movie (OHMSS-style death speculated among fans) - we weigh in * Confirms that Monica Bellucci probably won't be returning as rumoured (although does confirm they were looking to bring a Bond girl back for 25 - something Barbara Broccoli has been trying to do since TND)3. Casting call for two women and a villain* Kroll also reported that "EON is looking for two other actresses - one would play an MI6 agent who works with Bond and another, a mystery woman - as well as the Bond villain."* Alleged insiders then added that "Rami Malek was being eyed for the [villain] role, but his schedule on the last season of Mr Robot, which shoots from March through July, makes it unlikely he will be able to take the gig, even if EON offered him the part". * Does this mean Blofelwill not be returning as the villain?4. Harris, Whishaw, and Fiennes to return* In his conversation with Cary Fukunaga, Baz Bamigboye also confirmed that Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, and Naomi Harris would be returning as M, Q, and Moneypenny respectively. Cary seemed eager to work with the returning crew and the rest of the British talent likely to fill out the cast saying "You have some of the best actors in the world here, why wouldn't I have the best coming back?!" * Interesting that Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner was not included in that list of MI6 regulars returning as he has been a staple of the Craig era Vauxhall.5. Cary Fukunaga suggested to be writing Bond 25 in addition to directing* In Justin Kroll's Variety piece, Cary Fukunaga is reported to now be writing Bond 25. In the article, Fukunaga is listed as the sole writer two times and no reference is made to any other writers. Bamigboye suggested that Purvis and Wade were on-board to write and that Fukunaga was having "major input" in the direction of the script, but this does not appear to have been based off of new information obtained during his interview with Fukunaga. It is very likely Bamigboye is basing this off of the uncited rumour that Bond 25 would be going back to using the Purvis and Wade treatment following John Hodge's departure. Fukunaga rewriting the film lines up with his earlier comments from last week about the film still being written. * Confirms earlier story that EON were looking for a writer/director for Bond 25 * If Purvis and Wade are in fact out - were EON looking for a writer/director because they were keen to rewrite/replace their original treatment6. Norway as a Bond 25 filming location* Norwegian outlet, Bergens Tidende, has reported that a filmed dubbed "B25" has applied for a 25% subsidy of costs intensive for filming in Noway. This was then corroborated by Norwegian film commissioner Adrian Mitchell who spoke to Oslo newspaper, Dagsavisen, and said the following "I can confirm that we have been in contact with... --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-words-are-not-enough/support
