Our un-official Official Sports Business Expert Brian Cooper is on the show today. A man who has had many fingers in many different pies over his career, we start with his role as Chairman of Canada Basketball. With Zach Edey being drafted to the Memphis Grizzlies 9th overall last night the question is now - Will he play for Canada at the Olympics? With inside knowledge on the matter, Brian gives Bob and John his opinion, expressing his thoughts as to why having the 7'4” Rookie Centre could help the team in Paris. The three spend a bit more time on Canada Basketball before the break as Bob and John get caught up to speed with the teams selection process leading up to the games along with developments from the women's side of things as well as Canada's 3x3 teams.   After the break, focus shifts to the business side of sports. After learning about the increase in American viewership for the Stanley Cup Final, the three get into where the league is trending when it comes to streaming and sponsorships as they try to anticipate what direction sports, sponsorship and viewership is going in for the future.

Today we are talking to Tony Guernsey, former national head of Wilmington Trust wealth management, a longtime senior banker at JP Morgan, founder of the UBS US private bank. Tony wrote an unpublished memoir called Divas, Icons, and Felons with his wisdom and great stories from his distinguished five decades managing money for many wealthy and famous clients such as Steve Jobs, Jay Chiat, and Christo. Tony was very generous to share some of them with me and it is a rare peek inside this often fascinating and eccentric world, but it also highlights the lack of education out there for those who have the responsibilities of wealth. I hope you enjoy my talk with Tony Guernsey as much as I did. BIOGRAPHY: Peter E. ”Tony” Guernsey Jr. was born and raised in Long Island, New York. He was educated at the Taft School in Watertown, CT, and Lake Forest College, in Lake Forest, Illinois. During the Vietnam War, he spent 30 months in the U.S Naval Reserve at Great Lakes Naval base in North Chicago, Illinois. Simultaneously he was an ice hockey referee and drove a taxi cab in Chicago. In 1972 Tony joined JP Morgan and over the next 43 years re-engineered or started 42 National Wealth Management offices around the U.S. for Morgan, UBS, and Wilmington Trust. Today he is a consultant and serves as an outside independent family trustee. Tony and his wife, Eve, share their lives between New York City, Bedford, New York, and Martha's Vineyard. Between the two of them, they have three children and four grandchildren. Cumulatively, the two of them worked at JP Morgan for 50 years. In 1972, Tony was a contributing author of the book, Skates, Sticks and Men, the story of American Hockey in the United States. Tony was voted All-American Division 3 in Ice Hockey in 1970 and in 2006 was awarded the esteemed Lifetime Achievement award by Private Asset Management. Success came to the team relatively early, with the Bruins winning the 1929 Stanley Cup over the New York Rangers in the first Stanley Cup finals to feature two American teams. The early Bruins teams featured future Hall of Fame members Eddie Shore, Aubrey (“Dit”) Clapper, and Cecil (“Tiny”) Thompson, among others. The Bruins took home two more Stanley Cups, after the 1938–39 and 1940–41 seasons, behind goal-keeping great Frank Brimsek. What National Football League (NFL) team achieved a perfect season? After a dreadful run in the 1960s, during which the Bruins finished last in the NHL in six of the seven seasons from 1960–61 to 1966–67, superstars Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito emerged to resurrect the franchise. The two led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup in 1970, in the team's first league championship in 29 years. Orr, a defenseman, was the Bruins' most popular player until he left the team after the 1975–76 season, netting three league Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards (1970–72) and leading the team to another Stanley Cup win in 1972. Future Hall of Fame defenseman Ray Bourque joined the Bruins in 1979 and quickly became the new face of the franchise, playing for the team for almost two decades. The Bruins consistently contended during this period, as evidenced by their NHL-record 29 consecutive playoff appearances between 1968 and 1996, but they often played second fiddle to teams such as the Montreal Canadiens and the Edmonton Oilers. After playing through a stretch of seasons from 1997–98 to 2007–08 that saw the Bruins lose in the first round of the playoffs in five of their six postseason appearances, the team returned to the Stanley Cup finals after a 20-year absence in 2010–11. Behind the outstanding play of goaltender Tim Thomas—who set a finals record by recording 238 saves over the course of the series—the Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks in seven games to capture their sixth championship. The Bruins returned to the Stanley Cup finals in 2012–13 but lost in six games to the Chicago Blackhawks.
