It took tenacity and hard work, but Fadi says that plunging into the complexities of starting a logistics company in the Middle East from the bottom up also required a degree of experimentation and, yes, of naïveté. Aramex took the industry by storm from the get-go and, in 1997, became the first Arab company to be listed on the NASDAQ before going private again and then re-listing on the Dubai Financial Market. Fadi sets the stage for the beginnings of his prolific career; growing up in a predominantly female household in politicized 1960s Amman, the cues he took from his father, what he learned from taking a company public and the importance of attracting local talent to foster a culture of loyalty and growth.

The Better Boards Podcast Series
Establishing a global mindset in the boardroom

The Better Boards Podcast Series

Diversity is high on the agenda, yet we still see something different in the boardroom, where more often than not, boards are filled with individuals whose nationality only matches that of the country of the headquarters. FTSE boards are filled with British nationals, DAX boards are filled with German nationals etc. It is clearly challenging to establish a global mindset in the boardroom. In this podcast, Dr Sabine Dembkowski, Founder and Managing Partner of Better Boards, discusses the issue of establishing a global mindset at the board level with Thomas Kipp. Thomas served on the board of Deutsche Post DHL and Aramex and worked and lived in Europe, North America and Asia. He is the newly appointed CEO of Naquel Express."Be respectful and authentic"Thomas believes his upbringing contributed to his ability to adapt quickly to different cultures. He explains that being curious and open-minded to other cultures enables you to really understand how things are done. His best advice is to be respectful and authentic. "It's important to try and understand how you can leverage a global footprint"Thomas gives examples of this when working in Japan, where establishing trust takes time. In the United States, he learned to present ideas as if they were coming from the local teams, making it their idea and their success. In Spain, he found that Spanish people were not so comfortable speaking in English, so allowing interludes for speaking in their own language (letting the emotions and the Southern European passion out), then reverting to English, bringing everyone together again, created more focus. Appreciating the local business environment enables small 'tricks' to have a big impact. "You will find various angles of difficulty in creating… …the same level playing field as if you were dealing with business matters in your home market" Thomas feels that the first difficulty in bringing a global mindset to the boardroom is posed by simply practical reality. In any given country, it is likely that not too many board members will have lengthy, practical, work experience in another country. He states that only around 4% of the world's population has ever left their home country to work for a lengthy period of time. "We say we're operating in international markets, but it doesn't really show in the way we're running the company" Thomas points out that running a business with an international element is a clear strategic decision. Practically, that decision needs to be carefully thought through in terms of what it will mean for the organisation, for designing or redesigning the leadership team, and what it will mean to integrate the international business into the company setup actively. He suggests that the leadership team and board must represent the international reality. The three top takeaways from our conversation are:1.      It is a serious strategic and business undertaking to expand business internationally. There should be a clear conscious effort to reflect this in the leadership and organisational setup, from the boardroom down to the shop floor2.     On a personal note, board members need to overcome insecurities, immerse themselves in the international business environment, and make a conscious investment in understanding how to better leverage their international capacity and capabilities for the success of the company3.     Members must stay curious and open-minded and try to understand how to become more effective in other settings because working on an internationally composed board can be extremely rewarding.

Jordanian Proven Entrepreneur Abeer stand amongst the ranks of great entrepreneurs. She is a woman, a mom, and an entrepreneur, but that didn't stop her from building a multi-million dollar business.Small child, big dreamsAbeer grew up in Jordan, a country whose claim to fame is being the lowest point on Earth. As a child, she watched her father work in one business after another. Her father worked in everything from oil to insurance. Unsurprisingly, Abeer got her work ethic from her father. While everyone else was playing house, she played company with her siblings, where they pretended to run a business from their backyard.Abeer turned her dreams into actual businesses as soon as she could. During college she sold t-shirts and earrings from her dorm. And she also launched a meal delivery program that was 20 years ahead of Uber Eats. While Abeer's early business attempts didn't stand the test of time, they taught her how to run a company. These lessons would help her build one of the most successful women-run businesses in this decade.A natural entrepreneurUpon graduation, Abeer set her sights on growing as a businesswoman. She joined Aramex, the largest logistics, courier, and package delivery company in the Middle East. Over the next five years, she learned the ins and outs of motivation, leadership, and customer service.Abeer started Better Business because she recognized a need among small and medium-sized enterprises. Like other great entrepreneurs, she took what she learned from her first job and applied it to her own business.Better Business is now the leading organization for management consulting and human capital development in Jordan and the surrounding area. Since launching in 2003, Better Business has given over 500 companies a brighter future. Abeer credits Better Business's growth to consistency. She always makes sure to lead by example and encourages her team to practice what they preach. This allows Better Business to follow through on every promise that it makes to its clients.A businesswoman for the modern ageThe COVID-19 pandemic presented an important challenge for Abeer. By this time, after almost two decades in the business, the company was running smoothly. All of a sudden, COVID-19 restricted how they could run their programs and seminars. Instead of insisting on the status quo, Abeer met with her team to find a new course of action. Within three days, they pivoted their set-up online. Today, Better Business counts companies in Asia and the US among their clients.Better Business is where it is today because Abeer is fearless. She constantly and continuously pushes boundaries to be all that she can be. In 2013, she climbed to Mt Everest base camp with a group of great entrepreneurs to help raise $1M for cancer research. Want to learn the ins and outs of culture and hiring?Sharthok has you covered on both accounts in this wide-ranging conversation with us. As the Co-Founder of Klaar (an HR tech start-up), he also shares:The learnings from building the culture Founder's mental health and why it is importantWhy building in public + execution > the ideaIdentifying the right problems to solveHiring the right candidates and the role of leadershipHis mistakes as a founder and learnings from failuresSharthok combines a career in HR—including working with giants like Aramex, Cipla and Kraft Heinz. In addition, he has also been the founder of 2.5 failed startups (Ten Mint Entertainment, Pyper and Rootstore). He says 2.5 because his earnings from TME did put him through two years of B School. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:Founder's mental health and why it is importantPsychological wellbeing is important to be efficient and encouraged about work. Hustle culture has made the most primal need of individuals an option. For a founder, it is important to understand that their startup is not a sprint, it's a marathon. It requires dedication, hard work, and attention for a long period. So losing sleep or in its initial days can be harmful to both the founder and the startup. The lack of proper mental health effects is an individual's passion for their product or service. Hence, founders need to get appropriate sleep, eat adequately, and continue living life in a routine that expands outside of the startup and business. It is beneficial in the long run. For product development, it is important to pick which problems are to be solved:Humans love to ease their lives. If given an option, an individual may automate everything and fulfill all their needs via external sources. Hence, the demand for innovation and products never ends. At a given point in time, there may be five demands that need to be fulfilled. What is a vital hiring right problem for a company? When a startup or a business starts hiring employees, it becomes essential to check and analyze if their needs align with the company objectives. As the number of employees increases, there are Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) out into place to ease the process. Furthermore, Talent Acquisition systems are also put in place for companies that are hiring beyond 70 employees. Follow Sharthok on LinkedInProduced by: Priya BhattPodcast host: Aditya Sreekumar

Ramez talks about a stronger and more prosperous MENA region and why he has faith in the region and its capabilities.
