Character in Thackeray's Vanity Fair
POPULARITY
Thackeray's comic masterpiece, 'Vanity Fair', is a Victorian novel looking back to Regency England as an object both of satire and nostalgia. Thackeray's disdain for the Regency is present throughout the book, not least in the proliferation of hapless characters called George, yet he also draws heavily on his childhood experiences to unfold a complex story of fractured families, bad marriages and the tyranny of debt. In this episode, taken from our Close Readings podcast series 'Novel Approaches', Colin Burrow and Rosemary Hill join Tom to discuss Thackeray's use of clothes, curry and the rapidly changing topography of London to construct a turbulent society full of peril and opportunity for his heroine, Becky Sharp, and consider why the Battle of Waterloo was such a recurrent preoccupation in literature of the period. To listen to the full episode, and all our other Close Readings series, subscribe:Directly in Apple Podcasts: https://lrb.me/applecrnaIn other podcast apps: https://lrb.me/closereadingsnaSponsored Links:'Wahnfried' at Longborough Festival Opera: https://lfo.org.uk/ Hosted on Acast. Generally considered to be his masterpiece, Vanity Fair is Thackeray's resplendent social satire that exposes the greed and corruption raging in England during the turmoil of the Napoleonic wars. Subtitled "A Novel Without a Hero," it traces the changing fortunes of two unforgettable women: the scheming opportunist Becky Sharp—one of literature's most resourceful, engaging, and amoral heroines—and her foil, the faithful, naive Amelia Sedley. Thackeray's subversive, comic attack on the hypocrisy and "dismal roguery" of an avaricious world resonates 150 years later with implications for our own times. "Thackeray is an urbane nineteenth-century guide and commentator in a portrait gallery that is for all time," observed Louis Auchincloss. "He is the restless inhabitant of a prudish age, nostalgic, discursive, anecdotal, sentimental, worldly-wise, now warning us, now making fun of us, now reproving us …. Thackeray's harshest criticism of humanity is simply the point where ours commences. His perception of self-interest in every act is the ABC of modem --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ang189/support

Our original episode 107 was lost to the sound gods so we've kept the Hot Date chosen at the end of that podcast and move forward with the Vanity Fair adaptation Becky Sharp from 1935 starring Miriam Hopkins and directed by Rouben Mamoulian. Your podcast hosts, recording remotely after weeks of sound issues, check in on each other during the continued pandemic and recent social uprisings. In addition to Becky Sharp, they share their thoughts on things they've been watching including the Young Vic production of Streetcar Named Desire with Gillian Andersen, documentaries on Roger Vadim and Jane Fonda, and films including Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Get In, League of Gentleman, The Crimson Kimono, Tea and Sympathy, and The Lovebirds. “I am alone in the world,” said the friendless girl. “I have nothing to look for but what my own labour can bring me; and while that little pink-faced chit Amelia, with not half my sense, has ten thousand pounds and an establishment secure, poor Rebecca (and my figure is far better than hers) has only herself and her own wits to trust to. Well, let us see if my wits cannot provide me with an honourable maintenance, and if some day or the other I cannot show Miss Amelia my real superiority over her. Not that I dislike poor Amelia: who can dislike such a harmless, good-natured creature?—only it will be a fine day when I can take my place above her in the world, as why, indeed, should I not?”William Makepeace Thackeray's Vanity Fair is a massive novel that follows the lives of two women: Amelia Sedley, who is naive and sweet and devoted, and Becky Sharp, who is cunning and manipulative and beautiful. But novel's subtitle is “A Novel without a Hero”, and Thackeray doesn't paint either woman as entirely good or entirely evil. And as their fortunes rise and fall, they offer a glimpse into the mercurial, ambitious, and often cruel world of Vanity Fair, in which everyone scrambles for money, power, and status, and for what? It's a world that the narrator lampoons mercilessly while also participating in fully, and Chris and Suzanne start to unpack it—and talk about whether they're #TeamBecky or #TeamAmelia. The third and final series of Mum is currently airing on BBC2 and Pauline is proving to be as terrifyingly class-conscious as ever. Why do so many British sitcoms and novels centre around women who are obsessed with status? From Margot in The Good Life to Hyacinth Bucket, from Mrs Bennett to Becky Sharp - why are so many of our iconic female characters shameless social climbers? Jenni talks to television critic Julia Raeside and journalist and critic Alex Clark.Jenni speaks to Jo Miller as she steps down from one of the most high-profile local government jobs in the UK. Jo was appointed Chief Executive of Doncaster Council by central Government in 2012, when the Council was officially a “failing” local authority. Jo's turnaround strategy has brought in investment of £2 billion and the town is now in the UK's top ten for growth. How did she achieve this and why is she leaving?A report by Lancaster University and Fatherhood Institute earlier this year states that the number of men working in early years childcare is just 2%, a figure which has not changed for decades. What can be done to attract more men into the career? And, for those working in the sector already, what is the reaction from parents to having a man working with young children?Nearly 2,000 domestic abuse survivors iare being put at risk of homelessness because local authority rules state they aren't vulnerable enough, according to a new report published by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Ending Homelessness. The research and funding was carried out by Crisis, the national charity for homeless people. Thackeray halusi purkaa tapoja, joilla sankaruutta käsiteltiin. Vanity Fairin päättäväisin, dynaamisin ja skarpein hahmo on vaatimattomista lähtökohdista ponnistava, eteenpäin pyrkivä nainen. Nimi on Becky Sharp. Kuva: Robert Viglasky/ITV
For April and May, we are reading William Makepeace Thackeray's doorstop of a serial novel, Vanity Fair. Part 1 follows Becky Sharp and her frenemies from the beginning of the novel to their time in Brussels (after that pesky Corsican dug his way out of jail, we're assuming with an early prototype of the Spork). We discuss Thackeray's literary influences, the influence of the Regency period on romance novels today, and the historical impact of the Napoleonic era through to World War One. We also, importantly, dig into Thackeray's racist opinions and how they unfortunately come through in this novel and his other work. There were some technical difficulties while recording, so we thank you for your patience, and we thank co-host Manik Hinchey for her deep dive into the Napoleonic Era. Fascinating stuff! Recommendations to come next month, but the BBC miniseries and the 2000s Reese Witherspoon adaptation are both good.
This episode Sara and Amelia discuss Josie Rourke's directorial debut, Mary, Queen of Scots and our historical heroine is Vanity Fair's Becky Sharp. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram: @marryamitford
I think imagining different fictional people in their jobs, why they are there, what kind of personalities they have and what brought them to where they are is really fun. So I thought, today we are going to talk about Becky Sharp, the fictional governess in Vanity Fair. Becky is thought to be a composite inspired by several real women. And that isn't really surprising to me, what do you think? Becky Sharp is the first time a governess was the main character of a story, she was poor without social status, and typically at the time her friend Amelia would have been the main character. So Becky does something that with the tweaks and twirls of time and culture still happens today, doesn't it? From a cynical point of view we can read her as being a ruthless opportunist who uses people as stepping stones in her quest to climb the social ladder to riches and glamour. I have seen it in the CVs I get from people from marginalized countries with no childcare experience who say “I will take any job in Monaco”. (just a side note, we do not work with people who are not in it with the same values we have, quality is king with us, so no thank you.) From a less cynical and more modern and entrepreneurial perspective she disregards the social norms of the time and goes out to get what she wants. I see that too in CVs I get from people who tell me, I know I don't have any childcare experience, can you please help me build my CV to be a nanny. For those people, I am happy to see if I can help.

Since the beginning of film as a narrative and artistic medium, historical events and eras have been popular subjects for filmmakers. The decade of the 1810s, however, has not tended to show up in movies or on TV as frequently or consistently as other eras—but there are still plenty of examples of the second decade on film. Beginning in the 1920s with French filmmaker Abel Gance, depictions of the 1810s, many involving Napoleon or adaptations of popular and classic novels, have woven their way through the history of visual media with varying results. From Miriam Hopkins’s Technicolor turn as Becky Sharp in 1935 to Paul Dano as Pierre Bezhukov in the 2016 miniseries War and Peace, the analysis of the second decade in film covers a lot of fun and interesting ground. In this episode, a slight departure from the usual emphasis on factual events, historian Sean Munger takes you on a brief tour of the 1810s as they appear on the screen. Films and shows discussed include Ridley Scott’s The Duellists, the 2002 European-made Napoleon miniseries, the classic 1995 BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, as well as lesser-known (and less historically serious) efforts like Woody Allen’s Love and Death or the whimsical sendup Lost in Austen. If you’re a fan of the period and you’d like to see it on screen, this episode may give you some new items to add to your Netflix list!
