Back To The Water Below. Et voici aujourd'hui un nouvel extrait, " Pull Me Through ". How to Write Advanced DRUMS  Step 1. PatternSet up two bars of 4|4 with your grid set to 1/16 notes, and your tempo at 136 BPM. Now, instead of starting to make your drum beat with the usual kick on beat 1 and snare on the backbeats (like everyone else does!), you're gonna start by writing your kick and snare pattern on the hi-hats.Wait, what?! I know that seems like a really odd thing to do, but this method is gonna result in a far more creative (and therefore “advanced”) drum beat. Okay, so there are many ways to write a creative pattern, but here's an easy method. Start by playing every 1/8 note. Then, delete a couple of those. This creates variation. And then, move one or two hits over to the next 1/16 note. This creates surprise.  Step 2. BeatRight, now that you've written a creative rhythm, it's time to turn it into a drum beat. To do that, simply divide up your pattern between the kick and the snare. In other words, move some notes to the kick and others to the snare. But, instead of falling back into the conventional approach of kick on beat 1 and snare on the backbeats, purposefully avoid doing that in the first bar. This unusual approach in your first bar creates a huge amount of interest that grabs the listeners' attention. But, if you repeat this approach in your second bar, it won't sound as interesting any more, as they'll be expecting it. So, in your second bar, you're purposefully going to switch to a conventional approach with the kick on beat 1 and snare on the backbeats (i.e. beats 2 and 4). This cycling back and forth between an unconventional bar and a conventional bar keeps your listeners constantly engaged. And a shoutout to Royal Blood, and especially their drummer Ben Thatcher, as this lesson is based on his beat from their new single “Mountains at Midnight”. Just before we jump into the next step. If there's an artist you want us to hack, drop us a comment on YouTube.  Free BookAlso, are you new to music theory? Or are you experienced, but you want a refresher? Then download our FREE BOOK (link opens in new tab). It only takes 30 minutes to read, then you'll have a solid theory foundation that you can instantly apply to your songwriting and producing.  Step 3. PulseThis is the easy part. Just add an 1/8 note pulse on a cymbal. This simple rhythm glues the complex beat together. Ben actually switches the pulse between the hats for the verses, and the crash for the choruses. And if you need more help with your beats, download our Hack Drum Beats PDF (link opens in new tab). Sexyness ist ein Duo. Nicht nur haben Mike Kerr und Ben Thatcher unzählige Künstler*innen dazu inspiriert, auch mit wenig Personal eine Band zu gründen, sondern auch Größen wie Dave Grohl oder Josh Homme musikalisch schwer beeindruckt. Today my guest is Ben Thatcher drummer of the band Royal Blood. At the age of 10 years old this man was playing drums in a church band every week in front of 300 people. Soon after he discovered the Red Hot Chili Peppers record Blood Sugar Sex Magic and more specifically Chad Smiths funky grooves and it changed his life. Ben started the 2 piece band Royal Blood with Mike Kerr and quickly went in and did some demos that found there way onto Soundcloud where Warner Brothers records discovered them and signed them to a record deal. With 3 records out and a new single right now called Honeybrains this band is just getting bigger and better. Right now they are on a UK Arena tour and are about to start a US tour April 19th 2022 in Detroit. Make sure you go back and listen their 2021 record Typhoons. I highly recommend it.

Hot Springs Village is part of two different school districts, Jessieville and Fountain Lake. We're joined today by Jessieville Superintendent Melissa Speers and Fountain Lake Superintendent Michael Murphy. Some facts mentioned in today's show: About 45% of the students attending Jessieville school reside inside the Village. About 20% of the students attending Fountain Lake reside inside the Village. The poverty level inside each school system is very high: 74% Jessieville and 54% Fountain Lake. Jessieville runs about 5-6 bus routes inside the Village each school day while Fountain Lake runs about 3 routes daily. Melissa has been the Superintendent at Jessieville for 4 years. Michael has led Fountain Lake as the Superintendent for 6 years. There is a millage increase vote scheduled for the Fountain Lake School District for February 8, 2022. The Fountain Lake School Board unanimously approved the voting for the proposed increase. Should it pass, the millage increase will bring Fountain Lake's millage close to the current millage rate of Jessieville. Currently, Jessieville's rate is 38.7 and Fountain Lake's is 34.8. The Hot Springs Village Voice has published a series outlining more details about what the proposed millage rate increase will fund. In part, it would fund a new elementary school, a high school workforce space that could be convertible to meet current and future needs and other proposed improvements. Details of the proposed improvements can be found at millage.flcobras.com/ We encourage folks to learn, understand and make up their own minds about the February 8 vote. English rock duo, Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher are Royal Blood. When they burst on the scene with their eponymous, debut album in 2014—boasting an old school rock sound reminiscent of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, they were immediately hailed the saviors of guitar rock. Their sophomore album, How Did We Get So Dark followed the same playbook. There's an evolution in their sound on Typhoons, their latest studio album. It harks back to their eclectic roots. Both honed in their skills playing in various bands from soul and pop to funk and indie rock, as well as at church services and with wedding bands. It now also begs the question—where will Royal Blood go next? Many thanks for making this possible — Thank you Ben for picking up those chopsticks way back when you were knee high to a grasshopper. To Warner Records for use of Master Recordings and Warner Chapell Music for use of all songs. To Rick Gershon at Warner Records for the endless support. And to Ness Smith-Savedoff for additional editing help.Songs Featured: "Typhoons," "Figure It Out," "Out of The Black," "I Only Lie When I Love You," "Trouble's Coming," "Boilermaker," "Limbo," and "All We Have Is Now."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ben Thatcher of Royal Blood over Zoom video! Royal Blood release their long-awaited third album Typhoons today via Warner Records. The four album singles and videos ("Trouble’s Coming,""Typhoons," "Limbo," and "Boilermaker") leading up to the album have created an overwhelming global impact calling Typhoons the duo’s best record to date. Upon the album’s release, Royal Blood have already accrued over 50 million streams and the biggest US airplay of their career crashing into the Rock and ALT charts last fall and consistently raising for the past 30 weeks to the #1 position. When Mike Kerr and Ben Thatcher sat down to talk about making a new album, they knew what they wanted to achieve. It involved a conscious return to their roots, back when they had made music that was influenced by Daft Punk, Justice, and Philippe Zdar of Cassius. It also called for a similar back-to-basics approach to what had made their self-titled debut album so thrilling, visceral and original. The album bursts into breathless attack when the fierce metallic grooves of “Who Needs Friends” hits an early visceral peak. Royal Blood further reference their fresh array of influences by deploying vocoder-effected vocals on “Million & One” and evoking the sound of a hyper aggressive, Prince influence on “Mad Visions.” It ends with a final surprise in the shape of the stark piano ballad “All We Have Is Now,” a vulnerable and revealing reminder to live in the moment. That new approach manifested itself in the duo’s decision to produce the majority of Typhoons themselves. Already established as a fan favourite during their 2019 UK live shows, the studio version of “Boilermaker” was produced by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, the two bands having first connected when Royal Blood supported them on a massive North American tour. Meanwhile, the multiple Grammy Award-winner Paul Epworth produced “Who Needs Friends” and contributed additional production to “Trouble’s Coming.” We want to hear from you! Ben Thatcher of power duo Royal Blood is our guest this week! We discuss the band's new album, Typhoons, the emotional clash of the lyrics and music, the importance of dedicating the record to Ben's mother who recently passed away, using his DJ mind when it comes to sequencing an album, and the lasting mental effects the pandemic has had on him. Ben also dissects the "rock is dead" statements many older musicians have made recently, the lessons he learned from going on tour with Queens of the Stone Age, and the changes that may have to made on the road now that frontman Mike Kerr is sober. Petar and Brandon discuss Willow Smith's Mother's Day gift to her famous mom, James Hetfield being “skeptical” about the COVID-19 vaccine, and if rebooting The Osbournes makes any sense at this point. English rock outfit Royal Blood have been teasing fans with snippets of their upcoming album Typhoons which will be released later this week. The duo have a string of successes under their belt, and with global anticipation for the April 30 release growing stronger by the hour, drummer Ben Thatcher stopped in for a chat with HEAVY about the new album and its direction."It's a little bit extra for us as well to be honest," he offered. "We're not known for doing four to the floor music with strings and the production that we've put on. The last two records have been quite hard-hitting and quite a rock sound but with this record, we felt like it was time to experiment a bit more and have some fun with it."Thatcher goes as far as to say that the time a band spends in the studio and how they choose to use various tools at their disposal can alter the dynamics of an album up to and including the completion of the recording process."When you're in the studio anything goes," he said, "so you have all the toys, all the compressors, all the instruments you wanna use and you can get carried away with all that stuff, and it's easy to, because it's all so much fun being in the studio. It's a playground for us. With the first record, we were very strict on ourselves with we're not using anything. Bass, drums, vocal and a bit of tambourine every now and then, that's all we're gonna put on this and then with the second record it was a case of there are loads more things we could do but we don't wanna step 'em up and lose what we created so it was gentle, kind of baby steps with the second record but with this third record, it was like you know what, fuck it. Let's go and have some fun and let's bring out the synths and listen to some Daft Punk and get inspired and listen to some disco music because we also love that music and we have a palette for that so Daft Punk for us are like a metal band with keyboards and they still sound massive but they make people move in a different way. You can still dance to those songs but yet still mosh to them at the same time and bang your head. We experimented with a few of these different ways of writing music for us but still try to keep it integral to our sound and how we write music and that has a lot to do with the guitars and bass riffs combining with heavy drums but we used the drums differently for this. It's not so much rock-based but more dance-based."In the full interview, Ben talks further about the slightly different musical direction on Typhoons, finding their sound as a band, releasing their first re-mix, self-producing an album and the advantages of it, their plans for the remainder of 2021 and more.

This week we listen to and discuss one of Aaron's picks: English rock duo Royal Blood. Formed in Brighton in 2011, Royal Blood consists of Mike Kerr on vocals and bass and Ben Thatcher on drums. Their sound is anchored in Kerr's unique bass playing technique, in which he uses various effects pedals to make his electric bass sound like a standard electric guitar. Their self-titled debut album was released in August 2014. Their second album How Did We Get So Dark? followed in June 2017. For this episode, we breakdown their eponymous debut album. Most of the album's songs revolve heavily around the riffs written and played by bassist Mike Kerr. The recording of the album was kept under strict conditions, with the band essentially recording the album with only Mike Kerr's vocals and bass guitar and Ben Thatcher's drum kit, with the exception of shakers and tambourines on some of the album's tracks. The production of the album did not involve the use of samples or overdubbing, which meant that most of the album's material was recorded in one take, thus producing a more natural sound as opposed to the popular method of recording various takes and combining them in the final mix. Sit back and join us we discuss Royal Blood. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/esoterica-the-podcast/message
