I once saw a video of a woman driving a Shelby GT350 Mustang on the Autobahn. It hit 275 kph without breaking a figurative sweat, roaring its primal power the entire way. I was petrified even watching the video. This is to say nothing of the terror I felt seeing it take offramps at roughly 100 kph, which is not terribly advisable with a vehicle that is not known for its cornering. Of course, there are many sections of the Autobahn with speed limits--and even more with no Mustangs on it at all. Tragedies heaped upon tragedies.Games Played Last Week:00:54 -boop. A comprehensive list of what transpires in RRR would sound like the incoherent ramblings of someone undergoing a very potent trip, which is why we merely indulge in a curated list. While Mark does not retract his naming Decision to Leave as his favourite film of 2022, he will concede that it leads to a less absurdist discussion. It also features slightly fewer dance numbers. The Smart Car was truly out-of-the-box thinking. "Why do passenger cars all have to be the way they are?" asked some clever group of designers, and designed the minimalistic teensy Smart Car. Of course, the challenges posed by manufacturing the little thing, or driving the little thing on a highway, or walking away from a crash in the little thing, proved to be compelling arguments in favour of more traditional passenger car manufacture. What I'm saying is that sometimes the box exists for a reason, notwithstanding the virtues of experimentation. Multi-Deck System Games! Canadian content! Kevin Bacon! So many digressions in an episode packed with so much culture it couldn't even fit in one of Vin Diesel's muscle shirts. We do, however, focus on games long enough to rhetorically ask--with several stress patterns--of David Thompson: who is this guy? As a note, during the time of the taping of this episode, David Thompson released five more excellent board games. On Mark's drive across Canada (the first time), he stopped in Drumheller, Alberta for some dinosaur tourism. It has a truly impressive nodosaur specimen. The nodosaur is a close relative of the ankylosaur, a key difference being the former's lack of a thagomizer, the club-like appendage at the end of an ankylosaur's tail. Mark bought a plastic ankylosaur as a souvenir. Its name is Angie.Perseverance doesn't have any ankylosaurs or nodosaurs. A shame. Preparation is important. We very carefully do our advance research here at SVWAG, but occasionally mild errors do creep in. For this week, Mark studiously crafted notes and observations on such issues as four octave vocal ranges, Nickelodeon celebrity culture, and whether boredom of a third party constitutes necessary or sufficient conditions for breaking up with one's girlfriend. Sadly for Mark, Ariana was not the Grande under discussion this week, so he was forced to begin anew.Games Played Last Week:01:12 -Clinic Deluxe Edition (Alban Viard, AVStudioGames, 2019)05:36 -Contra: The Board Game (Adam Sadler & Brady Sadler, Blacklist Games, 2022)07:08 -Furnace (Ivan Lashin, Hobby World, 2021)08:38 -Pulsar 2849 (Vladimír Suchý, CGE, 2017)10:59 -Settlement (Oleksandr Nevskiy, IGAMES, 2021)12:43 -Race for the Galaxy (Thomas Lehmann, Rio Grande Games, 2007)16:23 -Décorum (Harry Mackin, Charlie Mackin, & Drew Tenenbaum, Floodgate Games, 2022)19:49 -Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition (Sydney Engelstein, Jacob Fryxelius, & Nick Little, Stronghold Games, 2021)23:34 -Factory 42 (Timo Multamäki, Dragon Dawn Productions, 2021)31:05 -Nidavellir: Thingvellir (Serge Laget, GRRRE Games, 2020)33:31 -Dune: Imperium--Rise of Ix (Paul Dennen, Dire Wolf, 2022)News (and why it doesn't matter):37:19 Rise & Fall by Christophe Boelinger and Ludically launching on Kickstarter in July37:54 Doomrock Ultimate on Gamefound38:46 Castles by the Sea on Kickstarter39:41 Robotech Macross DOG FIGHT follow-up: caveat emptor, perhaps best to wait and see41:05 Mark on Board Game Barrage this Thursday, April 2841:45 Check out our Patreon: www.patreon.com/svwag, new exclusive show BLOAT42:30 Upcoming Omnibus questions episode! A tragedy of consuming media or goods is that sometimes, regardless of how diligent you are, you cannot keep up with new releases. Titles, as Herr Doktor Doktor Vincent Diesel, esq. O.B.E. could tell you, are important things. They must be recorded for posterity, quite literally in the case of Dogberry: "But masters, remember that I am an ass, though it be not written down, yet forget not that I am an ass." Mark and Walker are bereft of such honorifics; "Gilded Ones" apparently only applies if you go the full gilt route, which sounds way too painful to endorse. Whether philosophers get any titles past "lovers of wisdom" is a matter of some controversy; Mark weighs in all the same. Walker's got this friend with a problem--not Walker, no not at all, a friend, you see, his name is... Bike Docker... and Bike has this problem that he judges a game by its cover art. Mike I mean Bike is so blinded by his prejudice that it causes him to rag on games like El Grande or GMT's entire catalog just because the cover doesn't appeal to his sensibilities. No, not winning, that is emphatically not on the docket today. Today we inveigh against whining, which is a form of meta-whining; what the Brits call "recursive whinging" or the French language names "le grand boo-hoo." Given that the hosts engage in this degenerate, despicable behaviour, this is very much an issue of do as we say, not as we say when whining. Perhaps this is more complicated than I first suspected.01:16 AYURIS: Sol: Last Days of a Star (Ryan Spangler & Sean Spangler, Elephant Laboratories, 2017)Games Played Last Week:03:55 -Root (Cole Wehrle, Leder Games, 2008)07:30 -Hard City (Adam Kwapiński & Marek Raczyński, Hexy Studio, 2020)12:09 -Tajuto (Reiner Knizia, Super Meeple, 2019)16:09 -Medici (Reiner Knizia, AMIGO, 1995)19:30 -The Search for Planet X (Matthew O'Malley & Ben Rosset, Renegade Game Studios, 2020)26:26 -Blackout: Hong Kong (Alexander Pfister, eggertspiele, 2018) 31:06 -The Shores of Tripoli (Kevin Bertram, Fort Circle Games, 2020)35:42 -Shadows: Amsterdam (Mathieu Aubert, Libellud, 2018)40:31 -Dice Forge (Régis Bonnessée, Libellud, 2017)News (and why it doesn't matter): 41:33 Joseph McCullough's Silver Bayonet43:55 Blacklist Games' Lasting Tales45:03 https://boardgamegeek.com/guild/3236, https://www.twitch.tv/soverywrongaboutgames46:02 "Lot" on Kickstarter--each game unique47:44 FlickFleet Box of Flicks 249:08 Topic: Whining

One is reminded of those memes that plot definitions on two axes, asking to what degree the reader is a purist or a rebel--the setting purist and the mechanical purist would say "Descent is a dungeon crawler." Perhaps the setting purist and mechanical rebel would say "Dungeon Lords is a dungeon crawler." Invariably these memes revel in the reductio ad absurdum, so I have to imagine the setting rebel and the mechanical rebel would say "Hopscotch is a dungeon crawler."01:43 AYURIS: Batman: Gotham City Chronicles (Frédéric Henry, Monolith, 2019)Games Played Last Week: 03:39 -By Stealth and Sea (Nicola Saggini & David Thompson, DVG Games, 2020)08:26 -Altar Quest (Adam Sadler & Brady Sadler, Blacklist Games, 2020)18:17 -Gods Love Dinosaurs (Kasper Lapp, Pandasaurus Games, 2020)19:34 -Yedo: Deluxe Master Set (Thomas Vande Ginste & Wolf Plancke, Board&Dice, 2020)24:50 -The Court of Miracles (Vincent Brugeas & Guilhem Gautrand, Lumberjacks Studio, 2019)27:15 -Nidavellir (Serge Laget, GRRRE Games, 2020)32:38 -Frenemy Pastry Party (Jesse Li, Mizo Games, 2019)34:52 -Marvel United (Andrea Chiarvesio & Eric M. Jason is happy to be joined by the host of Solo BG, Dereck Rodriguez, for a MEGA-length preview pod - our longest one! However, this episode is so much more than a preview. Yes, we chat with Adam and Brady Sadler about the new KS project launching in November, Hour of Need - how it works, some design choices, and the fact that it is indeed different from the previous Modular Deck System games (think of the MDS like, say, the COIN system - very different games, even within the same system). However, we talk about so much more. Adam and Brady reveal some of the inner workings at Blacklist Games, getting a small publisher started, and feeding the demands of the Kickstarter content beast. They also answer Jason's critical questions about their previous two MDS games - Street Masters and Brook City. Finally, all four of us share our Top Three Things in Comic Books - characters, storylines, team-ups, anything. We get into Marvel vs. DC, lots of different Robins, a commentary on the new Joker movie... the dork factor is really, really strong in this episode. We hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording!

The cube trundles onward, marching inexorably--if haltingly--towards its ultimate destination. It is told it must explore, and so explore it does. The other cube conquers, but that is not this cube's concern. They met once at a party. It seemed nice, but that was long ago, and the cube must explore, not mingle. Sometimes it does not explore; sometimes it scores for some quantity of non-explore things. These things it does not understand, but it knows that points are good, and so it does those things. The explore cube also cares about farms, for some reason, and mushrooms. Near the end of its track, it pauses--not for lack of mushrooms, this time, but out of an uncharacteristic self-doubt. Why does it do these things, it wonders. What mad god intersperses these random tasks so? And down from Olympus comes the pronouncement of the cube's controller--perhaps that very mad god, or perhaps merely a lesser divinity in thrall of some yet more powerful, some yet more capricious deity--"BECAUSE THEME."Games Played Last Week: -Shards of Infinity 2m38s (Gary Arant & Justin Gary, Stone Blade Entertainment, 2018) -The Bridges of Shangri-La 4m33s (Leo Colovini, Uberplay, 2003)-Vengeance 9m22s (Gordon Calleja, Mighty Boards, 2018)-Slide Quest 12m03s (Nicolas Bourgoin & Jean-François Rochas, Blue Orange, 2019)-Gaslands: Refuelled 14m02s (Mike Hutchinson, Osprey Publishing, 2019)News (and why it doesn't matter):-Walker deploys facts, CMON travels in time 18m00s-More Warhammer Underworlds 21m58s-More Sidereal Confluence 24m20s-Foundations of Rome 25m44s-Mark must resist Obsidian Protocol 26m07s-Blacklist Games' Hour of Need 27m19s-Root RPG 28m34sFeature Game: Tapestry 29m06s (Jamey Stegmaier, Stonemaier Games, 2019)

Every Night is Game Night

We made it to Episode 150! To mark the occasion, Jason is going to try a whole new style of reviewing games, which will hopefully stick moving forward. Jason is very interested in the psychological experience of a board game, whether its the thematic, imaginative immersion it generates or the strategic, logical challenge it presents. That distinction folds nicely in with the concept in pop psychology of the "right brain" (creative, "big picture') and "left brain" (analytical, detail-oriented). So, when Jason reviews games moving forward, the critical questions will be about game experience from these two perspectives. Unless, of course, you all think this is a terrible idea. If so, please let me know! The first game for review is Waters of Nereus (19:17), a simple economic, convert-stuff-into-more-stuff-into-points game with a touch of exploration and spatial movement to complement. Next up is Crisis at Steamfall (26:51), a tactical game with a significant Euro feel, especially in the way you build the actions and resources of your heroes over the course of three rounds. Finally, we get into the action cop movie, heavily thematic experience that is Brook City (36:26), fresh from the Sadler Brothers and Blacklist Games. In Liz we Trust: Sleeping Gods - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/953146955/sleeping-gods?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=sleeping%20gods

We would like to apologize for the poorer audio quality of this episode. Sometimes, dear listeners, the news does matter, and in such instances our hosts feel under-equipped to address them properly. Such is the nature of crippling incompetence. Out first repeat Preview Series guest! Way back in episode 6, Brady hopped on the show while he was on the road to Origins to talk about Street Masters. This week, his brother Adam joins him to talk about the follow up to Street Masters from Blacklist Games, Brook City. We get into the Modular Deck game system they are developing, how they wanted Brook City to evoke 80s cop games, mechanisms that make the different cops and criminals unique, and a lot more. We ran a bit longer than usual for the game description, but the Sadlers were so much fun to have on as guests that we just let it ride. Lots and lots of laughs to be had in our discussion. After we wrap our conversation about Brook City, the Sadlers share their Top Five Cop Action Movies. This was a really rip roaring good time of a conversation. You will be very, very surprised to hear which movie hits number one on both of their lists! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/blacklistgames/brook-city?ref=nav_search&result=project&term=brook%20city
