In many modern board games, all players participate until the very end. Everyone continues to take their turns until the game has finished and it's time to decide the winner or winners. That's true for co-operative as well as competitive games. Player elimination games are very different in that respect. In these games, some people around the table could be out of the game early on and end up sitting it out until it's all over. If done well, player elimination can be a very interesting mechanism in modern board games. In this article, I want to look at different ways this mechanism is implemented and discuss how well these work. Depth in board games is often confused with complexity. They are related, but they're also very different. I wrote a whole article about complexity about two years ago. So now it's time for me to look at depth in more detail. Board Game Arena gets more and more of our gaming time, what with its snappy interface and minimal system requirements. The sound effects, though, are controversial. The community seems divided on whether the whooshes are pleasing or distracting, and whether the knock-knock-knock sound is charming or nerve-wracking. We have heard the noise accused of being evocative of imminent swatting, which seems excessive but potentially horrifying.Games Played Last Week:01:07 -The Crew: The Quest for Planet Nine (Thomas Sing, KOSMOS, 2019)05:23 -MicroMacro: Crime City (Johannes Sich, Pegasus Spiele, 2020)08:26 -Flick Wars (Shaun Austin & Andrew Tullsen, Breaking Games, 2019)10:46 -No Thanks! If you've been following board games social media recently, you might have noticed that it's been a rough couple of weeks. Incidents like these, albeit difficult, allow us a chance to define our community and underscore our values. Silence can imply consent. Please consider supporting the show: https://www.patreon.com/alwaysplayeronepodcast In this episode we share our thoughts on the classic Splotter game Roads and Boats and how it holds up as a solo experience. Roads and Boats is infamous for it's cut throat player interaction in the multiplayer game, we discuss how this compares to the solo mode and take a deeper dive into the topic of interactive multiplayer games that can be played solo. We break down the main ways we see designers convert their interactive multiplayer games into solo modes which leads to some very interesting talking points. We also announce, with great excitement, the launch of our Patreon and with that our Discord channel where you will be able to chat and play games with us as well as take part in our light hearted tournament challenges. If you would like to support the show and join us on Discord then please sigh up here: https://www.patreon.com/alwaysplayeronepodcast We can't wait to chat and game with you! Listener Questions: In your opinion what is the best AI system you have seen in a solo game? What did the AI bring over from the multiplayer game? Why do you think the AI worked so well? To kick things off this week we look at the listeners’ responses to the question of the week: "What's your favorite "feeling" you get from a game - for me it's solving a particularly tough puzzle. Do you enjoy the feeling of a perfect die roll? A cascade of effects from a tableau you've built, the awe of a board covered in miniatures?" In acquisition disorders this week, Anthony looks at the likely sequel to Castles of Burgundy, Castles of Tuscany, coming from Alea and Stefan Feld later this year. Chris looks at the newest from Genius Games on Kickstarter, Genotype: A Mendelian Genetics Game. At the table this week, Anthony played a short and quick two player co-op trick gaming (really!) - Fox in the Forest: Duet. Chris digs into a pile of games, including Blood Rage with the new Promos Box, Marvel Champions: The Card Game, Quadropolis, and Three Kingdoms Redux Finally, in the feature, Anthony and Chris welcome Michael - a Patreon Backer and a good friend of Anthony's in Pittsburgh - to the podcast to discuss one of his favorite games, The Great Zimbabwe. Prepare for a deep-dive discussion into an underrated gem in the Splotter lineup. To kick things off this week we look at the listeners’ responses to the question of the week, asking about their most anticipated upcoming releases of 2020. In acquisition disorders this week, Anthony looks at Mariposas - the new game from Elizabeth Hargrave coming this summer - and Chris looks at Paris, the newest collaboration between Michael Kiesling and Wolfgang Kramer coming to Kickstarter soon. At the table this week, Anthony recounts his initial play of Roads and Boats. While not a final review after one play, he offers some insights on who might enjoy it and whether he'd play it again. Chris then dives into another Splotter game, this time the expansion for Food Chain Magnate: The Ketchup Mechanism and Other Ideas. Finally, in our feature, we look at 10 sub-hobbies of board gaming in no particular order. This week your favorite boys grabbed their hair nets and aprons to run a booming fast food empire in Food Chain Magnate. Splotter games has always been known for their intricate mechanisms ... did this game live up to that reputation? Did Ben's price gouging strategy work? Was Campbell's variety of burgers and pizza enough to draw the crowds? Also this episode: we all played some really, really dope games that we're also going to talk about. Some of them were more dope than others. We hope you like board games.
Jeroen Doumen, co-founder of Splotter and co-designer of games Food Chain Magnate, Antiquity, and Roads & Boats, joins Gil and Emma to discuss the design of unforgiving games. What choices do you have to make when making a game that can be harsh to mistakes? We also talk about testing, publishing, and of course, hamburgers. You can reach Jeroen by emailing him at jeroen@splotter.nl.

The thing about Arboretum is that everyone seems to like it. We have friends who would rather walk across hot coals than play a Splotter game who rave about it. We’ve also received recommendations for Arboretum from some of our heaviest gaming partners. Up Games), Calimala (ADC Blackfire Entertainment GmbH), Stroop (Grand Gamers Guild), 60 Seconds to save the world (Alderac Entertainment Group - AEG), Zooloretto Duell (ABACUSSPIELE), Path of Light and Shadow (Action Phase Games), Cuckoo! (Gém Klub Kft), Scythe: The Wind Gambit (Stonemaier Games), Wendake (Placentia Games), Escape Room: The Game - Virtual Reality (Identity Games), Sebastian Fitzek Safehouse (moses. Verlag GmbH), Bring Your Own Book (Noris Spiele), Ruthless (Lucrum Games), Flamme Rouge (HOT Games), Cities of Splendor (Asmodee), Muse (Quick Simple Fun Games) en Herbalism (EmperorS4). Time passes quickly, leaving in its wake a trail of unanswered questions. What was Heavy Con really like? Are the people of Denver as fragile as the Wicked Witch of the West? Are auteurs better at making games? Has Unfair received fair treatment? Can Whiskey be made in a castle. Why do we continue to enjoy Splotter games? Well, have no fear about the unknown. We're here to try and sort this mess out. Feel free to play along at home. We're starting off year 2 of Heavy Cardboard with a bang! Joris and Jeroen, the brain-trusts of Splotter Spellen are the featured guests in this episode. We ask them about game design, publishing, themselves...and...yeah...Food Chain Magnate which is scheduled to be available at Essen. We also talk about Brew Crafters and Ra. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did and let us know what you think!
