Moondance is the album that established Van Morrison as a solo artist. However, he was an accomplished musician before this, first as a multi-instrumentalist in Irish show bands of the late 50's, then as the lead singer of the band Them. Moondance is either Morrison's second or third solo album…depending upon how you count it. The first album entitled “Blowin' Your Mind!” was put out without Morrison's permission — or even knowledge, and he does not consider it to be a proper album. However, he had signed a contract with Bang! Records without paying much attention to the details, and gave up much of his rights. Nevertheless, this first album did contain Morrison's first solo pop single, “Brown-Eyed Girl,” which is one of this most popular today. After considerable wrangling and the death of producer Bert Berns, Morrison was able to put out an album on his own terms for Warner Brothers entitled “Astral Weeks.” While this album would be praised in the future, it was considered a failure at the time, producing no singles and not receiving much promotion.Moondance is where it all comes together for Morrison. It was more deliberately designed to have more accessible songs than the previous album, and it benefitted from the rising popularity of FM radio. Morrison's growing confidence in his own abilities and his sense of independence from the producers also were beneficial on this album. The result is an iconic album with a number of standards of 70's music.Bruce brings us this inspired album for this week's podcast. And It Stoned MeThis track leads off the album. The song reminisces about days being a kid, going fishing, drinking stream water from a jar, and just being high on life. The lyric about Jelly Roll may refer to jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton, an artist whom Morrison listened to with his father as a child. Van Morrison's dad had one of the biggest record collections in the area.Into the MysticThis track is about a spiritual quest. According to Wikipedia, Morrison says the song “is just about being part of the universe.” While it was not released as a single when the album was released it has become one of Morrison's most popular song, the second most streamed song on Spotify behind “Brown Eyed Girl.”Glad TidingsA deeper cut, this track is the final song on the album and the final song recorded for the album. The inspiration for the title was a letter Morrison received from a friend in London who had written on the envelope, “Glad Tidings from London.” When Morrison wrote back he also included “Glad Tidings from New York” on the envelope. The lyrics appear to address some of the issues Morrison had with Bert Berns and Bang! Records.MoondanceAs iconic as this song has become, it was not released as a single until September of 1977, seven-and-a-half years after the album. Morrison developed it while living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He considers it a sophisticated song, one that Frank Sinatra could be seen singing. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Love Theme (from the motion picture "Airport" )This film was one of the first disaster movies that would form its own genre in the 1970's. STAFF PICKS:Friends by FeatherWayne gets the staff picks started with a pop group from Los Angeles. Feather had a commercially oriented prog rock sound, with close harmonies and a bit of a country flavor. “Friends” was on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, with its highest position at number 79. However, they did get a chance to showcase their song on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.Reflections of My Life by MarmaladeRob brings us a Scottish band that started in 1961 as the Gaylords. This is their biggest hit making it to number 10 in the U.S. The epic feel employs acoustic guitars and horns, and a guitar solo which employs studio effects that play the solo guitar riff backwards.Kentucky Rain by Elvis Presley Lynch's staff pick was recorded during Presley's landmark two-week sessions at American Sound Studio in Memphis. These sessions produced two hit albums in 1969, but this song didn't make the cut for either album. The single was on the charts during this month, rising as high as number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and features Ronnie Milsap on piano.Mississippi Queen by MountainBruce brings us a rocker to wrap up the staff picks. This hard rock group was active primarily from 1969 through 1972, and this single went to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The opening cowbell originated when drummer Corky Laing got tired of the numerous retakes and just started using the cowbell to count off the song. Bassist Felix Pappalardi liked the sound and kept it in the completed track. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Viva Tirado (part 1) by El ChicanoThis Latin-jazz instrumental number was based on an original song about a bullfighter by Gerald Wilson.
Come check out the surprisingly interesting story behind one of the earliest heavy rock songs, Mississippi Queen! R.I.P. Felix Pappalardi. GAIL!!!

She had saved them all. The letters were a way for Corky, away on the road for years on end, to keep in touch with his roots and also, to make sense of his life. Our guest today Corky Laing recently celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday on January 26th, 2023. The Canadian drummer is not slowing down; he's actively busy recording and performing all over the world. Never resting on his laurels, Laing never stopped playing, and to this day, he continues to front his new band, record and write a new album, “Finnish Sessions,” and squeeze in live performances. Corky will always be known as a member of the 70s superstar-legendary band Mountain, which also featured guitar God Leslie West and bassist and producer Felix Papalardi. The band's hit “Mississippi Queen” (co-written by Laing) is one of the most popular songs in the history of rock music. Everyone knows it from the cowbell count-in and Leslie's guitar riff that no one has ever forgotten. Listen in as we discuss not only Mountain but also West, Bruce & Laing” (yes, that Jack Bruce, from Cream). We discussed the new album with his new band from Finland, where Corky has been living, traveling back and forth from there to Long Island, to Canada to NYC. I've known Corky for over thirty years, and I will tell you, his energy is uplifting, and he's enjoying a fantastic ride into his upper years. Fans of Mountain and anyone who digs big powerful drums and hooky guitar riffs will enjoy his latest album. There are even a few ballads and guest appearances. Thanks for listening and supporting Drum Channel. See you next week!

An all-time rock monster of a song, and a perfect '70s rock gem, Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" stands tall as a peak (pardon the pun) example of what American rock music could be. And there's a great story to the song, which we'll learn courtesy of Mountain's own Corky Laing, who brought the song to the band. Plus: “When I play Mississippi Queen, I think of Jesus Christ” Guitar pickup ash trays! “If you need to beat up a tornado, you throw on Mississippi Queen.” Mountain's Corky Laing walks us through the creation of this iconic rock track “A lot of our brothers and sisters never made it back:” Nantucket Sleighride and the reality of an often-greedy industry The name of the real Mississippi Queen revealed The pep-talk/wake-up call Corky Laing got from Warren Haynes A bonus Jimi Hendrix story, an extra PG-13 joke and more, only on the Patreon version! In this episode we sing a song of joy to commemorate the very first episode of American Top 40. What was it like for you back then, did it seem everything was beautiful, or was it all just a ball of confusion. Do you remember hitching' a ride from Ohio to go see your Mississippi Queen, or instead did you take the westbound #9? Queen's Reward Meadery was opened in 2016 and Jeri describes this venture as the most terrifying fun she has ever had. Sometimes unexpected things happen when recording podcasts, so when I lost my connection with legendary Mountain drummer Corky Laing in the middle of our conversation, I didn't panic. But I wasn't prepared for him to come back on the Zoom call with the news that Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts had died. Aside from that shocking development, I enjoyed talking with Corky about him being on the road again, his recent Toledo Sessions release and his Pompeii The Secret Sessions release, writing "Mississippi Queen," and a whole lot more. Corky is an energetic and funny guy and it was a blast catching up with him. To find out more about Corky's music and shows, visit his website here. I appreciate you listening! In this hungrily 144th episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast, Quinns, Tom and Ava are locked in a room together! A week long gathering of your verifiably rowdy hosts kicked off with three cracking reprints of lovely older games, and then we all did a podcast about them! We start with Big Daddy Kniz's Royal Visit, move to Cornwall for Martin Wallace's Tinner's Trail before jumping across the pond for a steamboat race in Mississippi Queen. Due to a live record, some of the trips and erms have been impossible to excise, so expect a slightly more chaotic pod than usual. We were very excited to be playing games together. Have a great weekend, everybody! Timestamps: 02:36 - Royal Visit 13:03 - Tinner's Trail 26:08 - Mississippi Queen

Episode 74- Nick Reese from Joyous Wolf! Joyous Wolf is a newer rock band and while they may have some older influences, do not call them a throwback! They are a modern rock band with a very complex sound that is still evolving as the band continues to grow. The band has toured with Deep Purple, Slash and Fozzy and also done many large festivals. While their cover of Mississippi Queen has over 2 million listens on Spotify, the original music they’re putting out is brilliant and quickly gaining ground as is the band as a whole. I’m so thankful to Nick for doing this interview now because in a few years this band will be huge and he likely will be too busy! 00:00 - Intro 01:18 - Welcome Nick! 02:08 - Socially Distanced Shows02:40 - Nick's Early Influences 05:43 - James Brown 08:23 - Making Way Through Musical Decades 09:25 - Meeting Drummer Robert Sodaro in Middle School 12:00 - Meeting Guitarist Blake Allard at Guitar Center 13:40 - Adding Bass Player Greg Braccio 16:10 - Coming Up the Name "Joyous Wolf" 17:08 - Pay to Play 19:20 - Playing with Bad & Good Bands 21:20 - Playing Festivals 22:23 - Being Signed to Roadrunner Records 23:20 - Cover Songs & "Mother Rebel" 29:45 - Modern Rock & Rival Sons 32:20 - The Term "Throwback" 34:55 - Stage Moves 35:31 - Sia & Voices That Express Emotion 36:50 - Making New Music 40:40 - New Shows Planned or Potential Tours 42:02 - Take on Chris Jericho Vs Sebastian Bach 43:10 - Singing Deep And High 44:17 - New Rock Bands 46:50 - I Support ANYONE Playing Rock Music 48:54 - St Jude's Children's Hospital 50:38 - Wrap Up Joyous Wolf Website:https://motherrebel.joyouswolf.comNick Reese Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/justnickreese/St Jude's Children's Hospital:https://www.stjude.orgChuck Shute Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/chuck_shute/Support the show (https://venmo.com/Chuck-Shute)

This week Talk is Talk back at full staff and we get Nard response to last week episode and that alone is enough to have you in stitches. We dive into a little NBA playoffs and Lebron James future. While we were recording we had a guest fall in our lap, so a young lady peaks her head in the studio and we invited her in to chat with us and she did not disappoint. She breaks down the difference from cooking a boyfriend meal or a husband meal, so ladies listen close to this free jewelry.
To find out more about the Wisconsin Great River Road please check out the website www.WiGRR.com to find out more about the Lock and Dam system please check out their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/usace.saintpaul/Bob: Jim Rand, Chief of Lock and Dams for the St. Paul District Army Corps of Engineers, joining us this month on the Wisconsin Great River Road Microcast. The first question I have for you, Jim, is, what is a lock and dam?Jim: A lock and dam has a dual function: to create pools, and to pass traffic. A lock and dam is very similar to a set of stairs. Each lock has its individual stair height. If we break into two parts, there’s a dam, and what that does is that allows us to maintain a 9-foot navigation channel in the upper Mississippi River. That 9-foot channel allows us to pass loaded commercial traffic – barges, towboats is what they’re commonly referred to – up and down the river system from St. Paul all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico. Bob: So the purpose mainly is for commerce on the river?Jim: Correct. The dam itself is there to maintain the 9-foot navigation channel, and that will allow us to pass commercial traffic.Bob: How much traffic goes on the mighty Mississippi River on a typical year?Jim: Last year, for us, for the St. Paul District, from Lock 10, Guttenberg, Iowa, north, we passed around 107 million tons of commodities.Bob: And that keeps how many trucks off the road? Do you know?Jim: I do. One 15-barge tow is equivalent to about 1,050 semis. So if we look at that in a length scenario, a towboat fully loaded with 15 barges is about a quarter-mile long. And those equivalent commodities in semi trucks, it’s just shy of 14 miles, bumper-to-bumper.Bob: So you’re taking a lot of traffic off the roads. That way, people will be able to get out and enjoy the Great River Road from driving it rather than having to deal with all that traffic from here to there.Jim: CorrectBob: Jim, why would somebody want to stop by and see a lock and dam?Jim: We get a lot of people watching the eagles. We get a lot of otters around the locks, so we have a lot of people watching wildlife. The other thing that they do a lot is, they just stop by to watch boat traffic, and to watch fishermen. We get a lot of the cruise paddlewheelers – the American Queen, Delta Queen, Mississippi Queen. That’s a big event. They put their schedules out well in advance, so we get quite a turnout for those events when those boats pass through. We have several open houses at our locks and dams up and down the river that normally we try to coincide with a local community festival. We allow people on the site so they can see how everything works. We’ll let the kids blow the horn and all that kind of fun stuff. We do allow fishing around our structures from the shore, so we get a lot of fishermen in the spring, summer, fall timeframe. We’ve got a lot of ice fishermen around right now. There’s always quite a bit of action around the lock and dam.Bob: Jim, as you know, this winter has been a winter of records with all the snow that we’ve had. Once that snow starts to melt, it will obviously find its way to the Mississippi. When that happens, do you open up the locks and the dams and allow all of the water to flow so that way it doesn’t flood?Jim: The locks and dams in our district are for navigation purposes only. They’re not flood control structures. Congress has given us the authority to maintain these pools at a certain sea elevation. Our lock operators adjust that dam. There are big gates over there – roller and tainter gates – they adjust that plus or minus normally two-tenths of a foot tolerance from the guidance from our Water Control Management Office up in the district. We can hold back to only a certain flow of water – every site is a little different – and then we raise those gates out of the water and it becomes open river.Bob: What is the life expectancy of the lock and dam structure?Jim: When they were built in the 30s, the life expectancy was 50 years.Bob: Obviously, we’ve gone past that.Jim: Obviously, we’ve gone well past that. We’ve done some significant upgrades to both of our electrical systems, both to our operating systems, to our control houses. Based on our cyclical maintenance, we’ve been able to prolong the lifespan of these structures.Bob: That’s fantastic you’ve been able to do that and keep the history alive. We talked a little bit earlier about the barges. What about pleasure crafts on the Mississippi River? Are they able to lock through?Jim: Yes. We’ll lock just about anything through. The paddleboards where people stand up and paddle, we can’t lock those through, and a jet ski that you have to stand up on to operate, the reason being the operator would be in the water in the locking process. We don’t want that.Bob: Where can people find out more information about how they can see when boats may be going through, or when they can find out when some of the open houses are where they can actually go on and see the insides of a lock and dam?Jim: The best resource today is probably social media. We advertise all of our open houses through our St. Paul District Corps of Engineers Facebook page. That’s probably the one-stop shop for all of our events that are coming up.Bob: Is there a place close by each of those locks where you’re able to tie off and maybe see some of the communities like Perrot State Park or Trempealeau Mountain or downtown La Crosse or Prairie du Chien or any of those places?Jim: Yeah. Most of them have local marinas that rent out slips where you can dock your boat. I’m not sure if you can tie up a boat at Riverside [Park] in La Crosse, but I know Trempealeau, for example, has the Trempealeau Marina. They’ll allow you to tie up there. There are walking paths uptown. I know the Genoa Lock and Dam has tie-off points on the backside of their upper guide wall where recreational boaters can tie off there and go uptown. There are a lot of local resources for a boater to stop and then to walk uptown and check out the local communities.

Reese and Sodaro met on their first day of 6th grade during student orientation. They went to different high schools where Sodaro would go on to befriend Braccio. During that time Reese, by chance, met Allard in the acoustic room at Guitar Center where they would jam CCR’s “Born on the Bayou”. There was an immediate dynamic between the two that ultimately led to an exchange of information. Months later Reese reached out to both Sodaro and Allard with the interest of starting a new project with them. Braccio would soon follow suit. In the waning months of 2014 early jam sessions would yield the foundation of what Joyous Wolf has become. Fusing together influences ranging from Heavy Metal to Delta Blues, Joyous Wolf creates an expressive, high-energy fingerprint that separates themselves from their contemporaries in the realm of Modern Rock.

We would like to apologize for the poorer audio quality of this episode.
