Today's guest has made a career playing with some of the most avant garde musicians in the world. But he didn't start off with music in mind. Welcome drummer Bob Bert to the podcast. He grew up in a house that wasn't super musical. In fact, his father, Angelo, was more into sports than music. He was so into sports that he won the Heisman trophy in 1943. But Bob had other ideas. Bob played some drums but was more interested in fine art, eventually printing for Andy Warhol. His music career began when his wife volunteered him for an impromptu gig. Bob talks about how he got the Sonic Youth gig, was fired, and then rehired. He talks about some other projects he was in and how Thurston Moore named one of them. Bob discusses his time in Pussy Galore, Chrome Cranks, Jon Spencer & The Hitmakers, Lydia Lunch's Retrovirus, and more. Bob has released his first true solo album called Beach Bongo Bloodbath. And the consensus is…it's a fun album. It's a mix of covers and originals and highlights Bob's singular take on music, like his guitar-free version of Mountain's Mississippi Queen. It's out on Bar None Records. Find it, buy, it, stream it, whatever you need to do. And follow Bob @therealbobbert on Instagram. bob Bert in conversation with David Eastaugh https://therealbobbert.bandcamp.com/album/beach-bongo-bloodbath Many music gourmandizers know the name “Bob Bert” from his stint as drummer for Sonic Youth in their formative years. He also beat car gas tanks for Pussy Galore. In the years since, Bob has recorded albums and toured the world with Bewitched, Action Swingers, Chrome Cranks, Knoxville Girls, Five Dollar Priest, and in more recent times Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, coming full circle playing metal percussion with fellow Pussy Galore alumnus Jon Spencer in his HITmakers. With Beach Bongo Bloodbath Bob finally steps out under his own name with his first true solo album. For this outing he mixes original material with extensive re-workings of a number of covers to create a veritable soundtrack for the B-movie of his life. Surprisingly for a guy who has slammed away for some very noisy guitar outfits, this album has absolutely NO guitars; once you hear his beat-centric take on Mountain's "Mississippi Queen," you will never hear that song the same way again. Bob creates a new world of sound utilizing a variety of drums and percussion as well as a diverse array of keyboards and theremin. The results suggest Sandy Nelson playing with the Flying Lizards on their greatest hits collection of Kraut Rock influenced Cramps covers! The six originals and eight covers play to his love of campy teenage horror flicks, art damaged punk fuk-u-ness and Warholian underground groover vibes. In fact, let's cue up some tracks from the album to help tell the Bob Bert story.
We're heading back to the Prince of Darkness courtesy of our pal Ruddy Rutherford. This one's an eclectic mix of Clapton, Lennon, and Arthur Brown? What?! You've never heard of Arthur Brown??? For shame! We end up listening to Green Day and there's altogether too much Def Leppard for Kev's liking. But will Corey be entertained by 21st Century Schizoid Man and will Kev be on board with a cover of one of his very favourite Lennon compositions? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and have some sympathy (and some taste)Also, go check out Ruddy's amazing photography at his website: Fit Light PhotographySongs covered in this episode; "Rocky Mountain Way", "In My Life", "Mississippi Queen", "Woman", "21st Century Schizoid Man", "All the Young Dudes", "For What It's Worth", "Good Times", "Sunshine of Your Love", "Fire", "Working Class Hero", "Sympathy for the Devil"Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theultimatecatalogueclashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/mz9ymTwSSEKo-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclashSHOP OUR MERCH STORE!!! Ryszard Zadow, known also as Richard to many, was interested in flying from birth. Fanned by aviation stories retold by his parents and watching crop dusters deftly maneuver above the orange groves, in his childhood home state of Texas, Ryszard continues to pursue his lifetime passion for flight.Ryszards mother and father supported his interest in aviation. He remembers one notable adventure in which his father brought him to a Confederate Air Force air show when the CAF was still based in Harlington, TX.When Ryszard was 15, a local celebrity named Al Cisneros, hometown hero and school alumni was visiting the students and signing autographs at St Joes (Go Bloodhounds). Encouraged by his mother to go speak with the decorated Vietnam War veteran and Blue Angel pilot. Al signed Ryszards program.Ryszard moved up through the cadet ranks in the Civil Air Patrol and persevered toward earning his pilot license by any means possible. He built time at Weiser Air Park and solo'd at the David Wing Hooks Airport in Houston in his late teens. He earned his private pilot license while attending University at Texas A&M where he helped found the A&M Skydivers club and personally flew jumpers. Ryszard joined the Army National Guard and earned a commission in January 1983 with the Navy. Among his many accomplished roles for the military, Ryszard flew as a Radar Intercept officer on F-14 Tomcats and eventually completed his career as an A-4 Adversary instructor. He left the Navy after Desert Storm in the early 1990's and accepted a position as a pilot for TWA and later Southwest Airlines. To his great delight, Ryszard one day found himself on the flight deck of a Southwest 737 flying with his childhood hero Al Cisneros! Ryszard remains close with Al to this day and describes him as an Uncle. Ryszards Canard experience goes back almost as long as his career. In 1983 Ryszard purchased the MILLETT VARI-EZE N930L. Many years later, he had the opportunity to purchase the Cozy Jet N722 "Kerosene Dreams" built by Greg Von Richter and flew it on a return to Oshkosh. These days he's slumming around in a Berkut N9041H named the Mississippi Queen.Ryszard's commitment to the Rutan canard community runs deep. In 2014 Ryszard established the 501c3 organization known as the Rutan Aircraft Flying Experience (pronounced "raa-fee" for short). In his own words, Ryszard: "founded RAFE to spread the word about the mission and tell the story of the dedication, the commitment and the spirit poured into the aircraft designed by Burt Rutan and built by the Owners."With primary bases of operation in Ellington, TX and Covington, TN, Ryzard recently retired from Southwest Airlines and now dedicates himself to the development of RAFE full time. He lives on a house-boat in Key-mah, TX, mostly because he wasn't able to find a suitable aircraft to live in, yet.Visit RAFE on the web! https://www.rutanaircraftflyingexperience.org/

Moondance is the album that established Van Morrison as a solo artist. However, he was an accomplished musician before this, first as a multi-instrumentalist in Irish show bands of the late 50's, then as the lead singer of the band Them. Moondance is either Morrison's second or third solo album…depending upon how you count it. The first album entitled “Blowin' Your Mind!” was put out without Morrison's permission — or even knowledge, and he does not consider it to be a proper album. However, he had signed a contract with Bang! Records without paying much attention to the details, and gave up much of his rights. Nevertheless, this first album did contain Morrison's first solo pop single, “Brown-Eyed Girl,” which is one of this most popular today. After considerable wrangling and the death of producer Bert Berns, Morrison was able to put out an album on his own terms for Warner Brothers entitled “Astral Weeks.” While this album would be praised in the future, it was considered a failure at the time, producing no singles and not receiving much promotion.Moondance is where it all comes together for Morrison. It was more deliberately designed to have more accessible songs than the previous album, and it benefitted from the rising popularity of FM radio. Morrison's growing confidence in his own abilities and his sense of independence from the producers also were beneficial on this album. The result is an iconic album with a number of standards of 70's music.Bruce brings us this inspired album for this week's podcast. And It Stoned MeThis track leads off the album. The song reminisces about days being a kid, going fishing, drinking stream water from a jar, and just being high on life. The lyric about Jelly Roll may refer to jazz musician Jelly Roll Morton, an artist whom Morrison listened to with his father as a child. Van Morrison's dad had one of the biggest record collections in the area.Into the MysticThis track is about a spiritual quest. According to Wikipedia, Morrison says the song “is just about being part of the universe.” While it was not released as a single when the album was released it has become one of Morrison's most popular song, the second most streamed song on Spotify behind “Brown Eyed Girl.”Glad TidingsA deeper cut, this track is the final song on the album and the final song recorded for the album. The inspiration for the title was a letter Morrison received from a friend in London who had written on the envelope, “Glad Tidings from London.” When Morrison wrote back he also included “Glad Tidings from New York” on the envelope. The lyrics appear to address some of the issues Morrison had with Bert Berns and Bang! Records.MoondanceAs iconic as this song has become, it was not released as a single until September of 1977, seven-and-a-half years after the album. Morrison developed it while living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He considers it a sophisticated song, one that Frank Sinatra could be seen singing. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Love Theme (from the motion picture "Airport" )This film was one of the first disaster movies that would form its own genre in the 1970's. STAFF PICKS:Friends by FeatherWayne gets the staff picks started with a pop group from Los Angeles. Feather had a commercially oriented prog rock sound, with close harmonies and a bit of a country flavor. “Friends” was on the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks, with its highest position at number 79. However, they did get a chance to showcase their song on Dick Clark's American Bandstand.Reflections of My Life by MarmaladeRob brings us a Scottish band that started in 1961 as the Gaylords. This is their biggest hit making it to number 10 in the U.S. The epic feel employs acoustic guitars and horns, and a guitar solo which employs studio effects that play the solo guitar riff backwards.Kentucky Rain by Elvis Presley Lynch's staff pick was recorded during Presley's landmark two-week sessions at American Sound Studio in Memphis. These sessions produced two hit albums in 1969, but this song didn't make the cut for either album. The single was on the charts during this month, rising as high as number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, and features Ronnie Milsap on piano.Mississippi Queen by MountainBruce brings us a rocker to wrap up the staff picks. This hard rock group was active primarily from 1969 through 1972, and this single went to number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. The opening cowbell originated when drummer Corky Laing got tired of the numerous retakes and just started using the cowbell to count off the song. Bassist Felix Pappalardi liked the sound and kept it in the completed track. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Viva Tirado (part 1) by El ChicanoThis Latin-jazz instrumental number was based on an original song about a bullfighter by Gerald Wilson.
Come check out the surprisingly interesting story behind one of the earliest heavy rock songs, Mississippi Queen! R.I.P. Felix Pappalardi. GAIL!!!

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Corky Laing is best known as the drummer of the legendary bands Mountain and West, Bruce & Laing and over the years, he has played, recorded and written with the who's-who of rock. Apart from a six-year period in the 90s, when he worked as VP of A&R at Polygram Canada, he has been performing and making music constantly since 1965. He has received multiple gold records, several Juno Awards and was given the Bonzo Bash Legend Award in 2014. Corky's album, the Toledo Session was released on CD in late 2019 and re-released on vinyl in 2020. The album contains nine new original tracks and the excitement brought on by the new repertoire is reminiscent of the classic Mountain albums, Climbing! and Nantucket Sleighride. Since 2015 Corky has been touring the world celebrating the musical legacy of Mountain. Corky's latest release is entitled FINNISH SESSIONS recorded at E-studio in Finland in April. The album features Michael Monroe (harmonica) and Ian Hunter (keyboards) as special guests. In addition to the exceptionally honest and endearing voice of Corky chronicling the ups and downs of his life, there are excerpts from dozens of letters (out of the c. 200) that Corky wrote to his mother, Sarah, between the years 1963 and 1997. She had saved them all. The letters were a way for Corky, away on the road for years on end, to keep in touch with his roots and also, to make sense of his life. This continues in Letters to Sarah, as Corky relives the first 50 years of his life, up until his mother's passing in 1998. Our guest today Corky Laing recently celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday on January 26th, 2023. The Canadian drummer is not slowing down; he's actively busy recording and performing all over the world. Never resting on his laurels, Laing never stopped playing, and to this day, he continues to front his new band, record and write a new album, “Finnish Sessions,” and squeeze in live performances. Corky will always be known as a member of the 70s superstar-legendary band Mountain, which also featured guitar God Leslie West and bassist and producer Felix Papalardi. The band's hit “Mississippi Queen” (co-written by Laing) is one of the most popular songs in the history of rock music. Everyone knows it from the cowbell count-in and Leslie's guitar riff that no one has ever forgotten. Listen in as we discuss not only Mountain but also West, Bruce & Laing” (yes, that Jack Bruce, from Cream). We discussed the new album with his new band from Finland, where Corky has been living, traveling back and forth from there to Long Island, to Canada to NYC. I've known Corky for over thirty years, and I will tell you, his energy is uplifting, and he's enjoying a fantastic ride into his upper years. Fans of Mountain and anyone who digs big powerful drums and hooky guitar riffs will enjoy his latest album. There are even a few ballads and guest appearances. Thanks for listening and supporting Drum Channel. See you next week!

Let's go back in time when heavy metal was just beginning to find its legs (after its birth in 1970 with BLACK SABBATH's self-titled debut). An all-time rock monster of a song, and a perfect '70s rock gem, Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" stands tall as a peak (pardon the pun) example of what American rock music could be. And there's a great story to the song, which we'll learn courtesy of Mountain's own Corky Laing, who brought the song to the band. Plus: “When I play Mississippi Queen, I think of Jesus Christ” Guitar pickup ash trays! “If you need to beat up a tornado, you throw on Mississippi Queen.” Mountain's Corky Laing walks us through the creation of this iconic rock track “A lot of our brothers and sisters never made it back:” Nantucket Sleighride and the reality of an often-greedy industry The name of the real Mississippi Queen revealed The pep-talk/wake-up call Corky Laing got from Warren Haynes A bonus Jimi Hendrix story, an extra PG-13 joke and more, only on the Patreon version! In this episode we sing a song of joy to commemorate the very first episode of American Top 40. Sometimes unexpected things happen when recording podcasts, so when I lost my connection with legendary Mountain drummer Corky Laing in the middle of our conversation, I didn't panic. But I wasn't prepared for him to come back on the Zoom call with the news that Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts had died. Aside from that shocking development, I enjoyed talking with Corky about him being on the road again, his recent Toledo Sessions release and his Pompeii The Secret Sessions release, writing "Mississippi Queen," and a whole lot more. Corky is an energetic and funny guy and it was a blast catching up with him. To find out more about Corky's music and shows, visit his website here. I appreciate you listening!
