The mysterious disappearance of 29-year-old Nancy Ng during a Yoga retreat in Guatemala has left her family, authorities, and the public puzzled. Nancy vanished while on a kayaking trip with nine others, including the yoga instructor organizing the retreat. The group's refusal to cooperate with Guatemalan authorities and their abrupt departure without settling the tab for the missing kayak rental has raised suspicions. The kayak center owners claim the incident was a straightforward drowning, citing the challenging conditions of Lake Atitlán, known for frequent drownings with bodies rarely recovered.Christina Blazek, identified as the last person to see Nancy, has provided her account through her attorney. Blazek insists that she and Ng did not go anywhere together intentionally and that Ng decided to swim despite Blazek's warnings about the rough conditions. Blazek's version suggests Ng accidentally pushed her kayak away while swimming, leading to her disappearance. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Tuesday, August 17. Tuesday's weather will feature the pleasant, yet rain free, trend of recent days. According to the National Weather Service it should be sunny in the Cedar Rapids area with a high near 89 degrees. It should get hotter as the week goes on, with a chance for rain at the end of the week. Faculty across Iowa's three public universities are expressing disappointment that this fall's COVID-19 conditions aren't as improved as hoped and are urging administrators to make the tough call to backpedal on promises that this would be a more normal semester. Faculty at the University of Iowa, Iowa State University and University of Northern Iowa have written the Board of Regents, sent demands to administrators, and launched petitions advocating mask and vaccine mandates. They've also asked that high-risk employees be allowed to work from home — despite regent  rules. Additionally, University of Northern Iowa professors through their United Faculty union have filed a complaint against the Board of Regents with the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration for “failure to provide a safe work environment.” Following the governor's lead in barring K-12 schools from mandating masks, the board hasn't backtracked on its prohibition against mask and distancing mandates or vaccine requirements on campus; and it hasn't reimposed emergency waivers for staff such as those involving family care leave and catastrophic illness. Most students have already moved back onto campus. The school year starts on August 23. Linn County residents will have more opportunities to provide input regarding the county's allocation of $44 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funds. Two more forums are planned for 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 23 at the Jean Oxley Linn County Public Service Center and 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Lynn Dunn Memorial Building on the Linn County Fairgrounds. Funds provided through the American Rescue Plan Act are meant to support economic recovery from losses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The forums aim to help explain the purpose of the American Rescue Plan and identify broad priorities to guide the use of these federal funds in Linn County.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking information regarding a boating incident over the weekend on the Cedar River that left one man seriously injured. The Cedar Rapids Police Department identified the man as Isaac Allen Blazek, 41, of Cedar Rapids. Police said Blazek was thrown from an inflatable inner tube and struck the back of a docked pontoon boat, suffering a serious head wound. The DNR said the inner tube Blazek was riding was being pulled by a green and white personal watercraft on the Cedar River on Sunday afternoon near Mohawk Park in Cedar Rapids when the incident occurred. Blazek was transported by air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. There is no available update on his condition, the DNR said. This week on Inside the Headset we speak with AJ Blazek, Offensive Line Coach for North Dakota State University. We discuss his entrance to the coaching profession, how he builds relationships with players and coaches, and what he looks for when recruiting offensive linemen. Coach Blazek's career began as a student assistant in 2001 at Iowa after finishing his playing career as a Hawkeye. He remained with the program for the 2002-2004 seasons working as a graduate assistant before accepting a full-time position at Fort Hays State as the Offensive Line coach (2005). Blazek added the title of Offensive Coordinator in 2006 and led the offense from 2006-2008, and he later joined the staff at Winona State in 2009 to coach the offensive line. After going on to serve as the Co-OC in 2011 and 2012, Blazek spent the 2013-2015 seasons at Western Illinois where he coached the O-Line and was the Run Game Coordinator. In 2016, Blazek joined the Rutgers staff as the Offensive Line Coach and was named Assistant Head Coach in 2017. Blazek joined the NDSU football staff in January of 2019 as the Offensive Line Coach. Kirsten Blazek is the Founder and expert Creative Director of A 1000 x Better a staging and interior design company. In this episode, Kirsten shares how the encouragement of a friend inspired her to create her own dream job. Kirsten explains that she was at a cross roads when she began A 1000 x Better, after taking time off to stay home with her kids. She had to decide whether to go back to her first profession, nursing, or pursue something she felt passionate about which required taking a risk. Along with sharing her own story, Kirsten gives frank advice about the importance of trusting your gut and relying on your intuition in both the start up and operational years. Kirsten also shares the secret behind growing her loyal Instagram following from 300 to over 24,000 (at the time interview). Her honesty and celebration of supportive friendships will have you reaching out to the people you love and encouraging them to pursue their dreams.
