How do you stay emotionally regulated as a parent? If you're anything like me, it can actually be quite difficult, especially when you have other things going on in your life. It's important to create a sense of peace and balance in your life. In this episode, I'm talking about my own recent experiences in parenting and how I'm learning to regulate my emotions better by focusing on my emotional, mental, physical, and energetic health.   How to Help Your Emotional Regulation Recognize the circumstances, thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Be willing to disappoint other people to maintain your own peace. Understand what you can do to help yourself feel regulated. Protect your energy.   The Pain of Emotional Dysregulation We've all been there – you're at an incredible event, and when you come home, you experience a dopamine crash. Your mood lowers, and you just crash. It feels awful, especially when it happens often. That's why it's important to put into practice things that help you regulate your emotions. Emotional regulation is about more than just your emotions. You have to target it emotionally, mentally, physically, and energetically to make long-term regulation possible. Part of the emotional regulation piece is finding ways you can bring yourself more peace every single day. It's important that you find what brings you peace because what works for me may not work for you. For me, a consistent, balanced, and realistic work plan is essential, as is following the 80/20 principle and creating realistic order in my week.   Staying Emotionally Regulated as a Parent When it comes to being an emotionally regulated parent, you need to learn to set boundaries with your children. Are these going to be comfortable? Probably not – but you need to do it anyway. Anything that gives you a sense of peace and calm in your home will also help to balance your emotions. Create daily rituals that balance you: have baths, light the good candles, and treat your physical body. Think about how you can help your body feel more regulated. What kind of activities might bring you peace and balance? These are the things that you need more of in your life. In situations where you find yourself completely emotionally dysregulated, how can you commit to your mental, emotional, physical, and energetic health in a way that will prepare you so you aren't as dysregulated when massive triggers occur? Boundaries start with yourself. When we're able to set and maintain self-boundaries, we are more capable of setting them with other people and in other areas of our lives. In this episode, I'm talking about how to set self-boundaries and what this looks like. I'm also diving into how to honor other people's boundaries, setting boundaries without overthinking, and what happens when you embrace your anger.   How to Use Your Boundaries to Set Goals Set the goal Break the goal down as far as you can Set a boundary on how you'll stay true to that goal so it will serve the bigger goal   Setting Self-Boundaries Setting boundaries with yourself is one of the most important things you can learn to do. When we set self-boundaries, we are better able to accomplish our goals – but not only that, we're better able to set boundaries in other aspects of our lives. I encourage you to set boundaries in every aspect of your life, where you wear a hat. By setting a boundary in each area, you will absolutely feel more in control and more accomplished.  This is especially important when it comes to goals, and by breaking your bigger goals down into smaller ones, you are more likely to maintain the boundary you set for yourself and, therefore, feel more empowered.   Setting Boundaries with Others I also want you to get comfortable with understanding your anger. Usually, we feel angry when a boundary has been broken. Your anger can turn into a great tool to help you set and maintain your boundaries – with yourself and with others. Setting boundaries with other people doesn't have to feel uncomfortable and scary. It's about setting yourself as best as you can to have these conversations. Prepare what you're going to say, and you can even practice a few possible scenarios. Your friends will support you when you set a boundary. Finally, I talk about the relationship between your boundaries and your higher self. When you're more connected to your intuition and higher self, you're better able to feel what boundaries you need. Feeling like you're constantly running on empty? You're not alone. Especially when you're an empath, like me, it's so easy to fall into the trap of allowing everyone access to your emotions and energy. But it doesn't actually serve anyone, least of all you, to give yourself emotionally all the time. In this episode, I'm talking about the importance of setting emotional and energetic boundaries and how to set them in a way that serves you best.   How to Get Snobby with Your Energy Evaluate where your emotional energy is going Decide you want more emotional energy for you Define what's yours and get snobby with your energy   Why We Need Energetic Boundaries Get snobby with who you allow into your energy field. Especially if you're an empath, it is almost engrained in us to give everyone access to our emotional space and our energy. Protecting your energetic field is so important. When we are always available to everyone, we don't end up serving anyone, least of all ourselves. What I want to encourage you to do is to set emotional and energetic boundaries. These boundaries are so important. You can choose to allow people to join you inside your boundaries, but having that emotional intimacy with everyone is exhausting and destructive.   How to Set Energetic Boundaries Being emotionally intimate with too many people has a negative impact on your health. You owe it to yourself to set healthy boundaries. Check in with yourself. Where is your emotional energy going? Would your emotional energy be better served by yourself? If you decide yes, it can, this is where I want you to get snobby. Define what is yours and what is not yours. What is not yours does not serve you – and that is okay. In fact, setting emotional boundaries can actually lead to healthier relationships. Where are you feeling your emotional energy? How can you draw your energy back to yourself and set a boundary? You're not meant to be intimate with everyone. You get to choose that. When you are choosing that emotional intimacy, that is when you're saying, ‘this is mine, and that is yours.' That is super powerful. It is not selfish. It will allow you to show up and serve in the way that you want to, versus showing up and serving in the way that you have to.” [19:54] “When you are taking what's yours, you take it. And I'll take what's mine. What are you doing? You are creating the most authentic version of yourself.” [24:07] “When you start plugging the hole, zipping up, taking that energetic field into your own hands and enhancing it, fostering it, and growing it to whatever level that you want to grow it… This is when you are going to have the magic happen.” [25:21] “When you can start owning what's yours, that's when the work begins. That's when you get to go deeper and curate what you want yours to look like. You have 24 hours in your day. Are you spending those hours in a way that honors your goals, desires, and happiness? You get to choose how you spend your time. It's time to reevaluate what matters most and get snobby with your time.   Time Traps That Steal Your Time Social media Relationships Intrusive Thoughts All-or-None Thinking Mental, Emotional, & Physical Wellness   Your Time and Your Core Desires When it comes to getting snobby with your time, it's vital that you identify where your time goes each day. Take some time to plot out your day and see what's taking up your time. Do these things align with your desires? If there are time traps, like social media or relationships that don't bring you joy, consider how you can replace those. While I often talk about social media as a distraction, not all distractions are wrong – so long as they come with boundaries. Setting yourself healthy boundaries on the things that don't serve your higher desires allows you the freedom to still experience them without eating up your valuable time. I like to relate everything to my core desires. When you know what you truly desire, it's much easier to align your time to meet your goals. Identifying your core desires is essential.   Reevaluate Your Time Traps Another big time trap is spending time in relationships that don't serve you. I recommend limiting the time you spend with people who leave you feeling drained, who don't uplift you, or who otherwise don't align with your core desires. The other time traps are intrusive thoughts, all-or-none thinking, and your physical, emotional, and mental wellness. We waste so much time in thought spirals. How much better for your entire life would it be if you didn't waste your time in these negative thought loops? It is not selfish to get snobby with your time. There are so many advantages to getting snobby with your time. Are you willing to keep taking from yourself? Give yourself a chance to discover what happens when you become snobby with your time. Where are you losing the most time? How can you be more intentional with your time? Because we have 24 hours, we have to be extremely deliberate about where we are spending our time.” [7:07] “Distraction can actually be useful if you do it in a way that there are boundaries.” [10:15] “Getting snobby with your time means that it is fulfilling your core desires.” [13:06] “When somebody asks something of you, you need to take a moment, and you need to really decide if it feeds into how you're getting snobby with your time. Getting snobby is not a snobby thing to do.” [17:44] “Get snobby with the thoughts that you're allowing in. What are those intrusive thoughts? Think about it. Reflect. What are you thinking about on a daily basis that doesn't make you feel all of those core desires that you want to feel?” [22:07] “You have a choice. Given a certain circumstance, you can choose to think one way or the other. That is your choice. That is nobody else's choice, and nobody else can take that away from you. This is on you. Getting snobby with your time is about setting boundaries on what you choose to believe and how you choose to show up for yourself. We all often struggle to ask for help. It's common to think that if we can't ask for help, it's a sign of weakness. But asking for help isn't a weakness. It's a strength. In this episode, I'm discussing what happens when we become aware that we need help and then ask for help.   How to Ask for Help Admit that you need help Be vulnerable enough to ask someone for help Accept the kindness offered   Get Vulnerable and Ask for Help It's difficult to ask for help. Putting yourself out there, admitting what you feel are weaknesses, and asking for help is such a vulnerable thing to do. But there is actually so much power in admitting you need a helping hand. If you're not sure where you might need to ask for help, I will encourage you to look for those areas of your life that feel a bit sticky. That feels difficult to you. On a day-to-day basis, where are the specific areas you can ask for a little bit more help? These are the areas where you could reach out and ask for help. Asking for help is not comfortable. But you have to ask yourself if you want to keep going the way you are, or whether you want to put the work in and change it. This often means asking for help.   What Happens When You Ask for Help When you ask someone else for help, you're not only helping yourself. You're helping show other people that it's okay to be vulnerable. That it's okay to open up and ask for help. In a way, it's giving the other person permission to be vulnerable. Asking someone for help lets them know that they can ask you for help if they need it.   Finally, I talk about how setting boundaries and saying how you would like others to treat you is also a way to ask for help. Ask people to treat you how you prefer to be treated. What feels uncomfortable when you ask for help? What's stopping you from doing it? If you are able to do it, how would your life be different? We need help.' It's amazing. It's not comfortable. It's not comfortable evaluating what we're constantly doing and putting our ego aside to say, ‘this isn't working. How can we come together?' It is not comfortable because we have to put it out there and say, ‘something's off here. Do we want to keep going on this way, or do we want to put the work in and change it?” [19:04] “If we can think about help less about ‘I can't do this on my own' and instead, ‘wow, look at the opportunity that I have to better myself more so I can create more connection, adventure, freedom, and peace, all those things that I want in my life. There is so much more to weight loss than just losing weight. Weight loss includes thought work, boundary setting, healing your relationship with your body, and growing massively in many areas of your life. If weight loss is your goal, I want you to go deeper. In part two of the so much more than weight loss series, I talk about weight loss as a secondary effect of improving your life.   If Weight Loss Is Your Goal Find the right nutrition plan for your unique body type Strength train to preserve muscle mass Adopt a long-term, sustainable strategy Make space for massive growth: mentally, emotionally, socially Maintain your boundaries   Heal Your Relationship with Your Body Can you remember the first thing you were ever told about your body? The first time you were aware of your body? You were likely a young child. I know I was. I also know how much these moments can impact and alter your body image for many years afterward. My focus on it is that it is so much more than weight loss – it's about healing your relationship with your body. It's about detaching yourself from the number on the scale. It's about body neutrality and feeling neither good nor bad about your body. Your body is unique to you, you can't compare yourself to someone else. For me, much of this comes down to understanding your body type, but it goes further than this - to your individual body's needs.   Weight Loss is Your Goal Practically speaking, if one of your goals is to lose weight, there are some basic concepts you need to understand. It will be difficult for you to exercise while fasting; your body won't have the nutrients it needs to thrive through a workout and recover. It's also vitally important that you maintain your lean muscle mass. Regular strength training (there is an optimal number of strength sessions to aim for each week!) and eating enough protein to encourage muscle recovery. To lose weight effectively, you need to keep your lean muscle mass. But this is all so much more than weight loss. It's reclaiming your life! It's showing up for yourself, making space for the massive growth that will occur in every aspect of your life. And it's honoring your boundaries. Why do you want to lose weight? What will happen in your life if the number on the scale goes down? If your goal is a number and all you care about is the number, we have to dig deeper if you really want to change that number. Just focusing on it and doing everything you can if you want to alter that number is not going to be something that will create long-term, sustainable results. We have to allow this to be a secondary effect.” [7:55] “One of the things we know is that as we lose weight without prioritizing keeping the good stuff, we will drop our Basal Metabolic Rate.” [18:21] “This is so much more than weight loss. You need to start setting better boundaries. Boundaries help prevent burnout and resentment, even when you're doing something that you love. I'm joined by my friend, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, on the release of her new book, Brave Boundaries, to talk about the steps to take to start setting boundaries in your life: both with yourself and other people.   How to Set Boundaries Take a boundary inventory - write a list of everything you do Start from the bottom - stop doing things you don't like to do for free Move to the middle - stop doing paid things you don't like   About Dr. Sasha Shillcutt My friend, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, has a new book that I think you would all find life-changing.  In her book Brave Boundaries, Sasha utilizes practical and powerful tools, concepts, and exercises, to invite you into an empowering and peaceful way of life. She shares personal and professional expertise on how you can overcome burnout and take back control of your time and your life by learning to set clear work-life boundaries.  She examines the hopeless cycle of self-criticism, the social expectation of what a woman “should” be, and the incessant drive to please. Then, she guides you down the path of discovering who you were created to be by helping you take a boundary inventory. I encourage you to purchase it HERE!   Set Boundaries to Avoid Burnout Dr. Sasha Shillcutt is here on the exciting release of her book, Brave Boundaries, to talk about why we, as women, need to start setting boundaries to avoid burnout. Sasha shares how she burned out in 2019 by doing the work she loves to do – I think this is so important to note. You can still burn out doing what you love to do. This is why it's vital that you set boundaries, especially if those boundaries are with yourself. I know all too well that when you love to do something, you might be way more flexible with your boundary. And this is what leads to burnout or resentment. What exactly is a boundary? Sasha says that a boundary is something that allows you to live your priorities and have your priorities match your calendar. This is both with yourself and with others.   Setting Boundaries with Others Not sure how to set your boundaries? Sasha says to start by writing a list, with your paid commitments and priorities at the top all the way down to what you do for free. Start setting boundaries from the bottom of your list and work your way up. It might be difficult to set boundaries with other people. You might experience something Sasha calls boundary backlash. She explains that this pushback on your boundaries usually comes from people who never thought about setting boundaries for themselves – you haven't done anything wrong if you've received boundary backlash from someone! We both agree that it's so special to find a friend who respects your boundaries with ease. These friends are like gold dust; I really feel like you can exhale around them.
