My wife is addicted to Evian water, and my big responsibility to keep the house at peace is to order at least two, sometimes three, cases of these two-liter bottles of Evian because she's convinced it's the best-tasting water in the world. But she has not tasted water from Watermill Express, and the CEO, Mike Gallagher, is in the studio right now.

Episode: 2728 The Great Laxey Wheel; The Water Wheel at the Peak of Function and Grace. Today, the Laxey Wheel.
Nestled within the lush terrain of the Appalachian Mountains, the leftover grist water mills are weatherworn relics of a bygone era. Since the 1870s, water cascading over the Cable Mill's wooden wheel has reverberated through surrounding Cades Cove and Great Smoky Mountain National Park. As a calm rush of water down the aged timber flume crashes over its lazily spinning wheel and into the stream below, the gears within the Millhouse chime in with the occasional soft creak and clang. Visitors who pause to listen can hear these relaxing sounds echo timeless craftsmanship throughout the hills of Appalachia. 35.58513, -83.84445

In this episode with Christoph: a story about how Christoph planted the idea for a writing project in my mind in the summer of 2019 finishing projects, saying goodbyes and letting go a story about a series of events that led Christoph to pursuing a career in theater and working with Robert Wilson we're discussing how we feel when we take big leaps and how it feels in the process to take aligned action happiness and decision-making, impact that people we meet have on our lives what is Watermill Center and how Christoph and I met and experienced it in 2019: art, soul, human connection how Robert Wilson has influenced Christoph we're sharing a story about how Christoph asked me to sing at a private dinner in front of 80 people I'm reading a poem about Watermill that I wrote in May 2020 to Christoph for the first time Christoph is talking about co-creation with other people, teaching drama and directing stages of creative process Christoph is answering Ksenia's question and also shares his question with the jazziam community. happy listening, jazziamen Links: Christoph Schletz on Instagram Watermill Center website

Esperanza and Irwin go back 50 years to what may have been the brouhaha of the century on eastern Long Island. The proposed Highway Bypass was to go north of Route 27 through North Sea, Watermill, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, Wainscott, East Hampton and ultimately ending in eastern Amagansett. "Build it and they shall come", was one perspective, saying traffic will be even worse. Farmland would be decimated. In a 1974 letter to the East Hampton Star, Tom Twomey, the Chair of the Halt The Highway committee claimed "the super highway will make our Town a bedroom community for migrants from Western Suffolk. They will skyrocket our taxes and make possible new giant shopping centers". But a 1974 Star editorial made the point that we can't turn back the clock, the people were already there garnered support from residents wanting the summer traffic eased. Hindsight is always 20/20. The writer Tim Ferguson's thought that "The protective impulse of 50 years ago just bought us more trouble today" is a point of view many believe. Let us know what you think after you listen!
Jared, Oriana and Ned talk about Jared's choice of topic: worldbuilding. Tolkien is so heavily identified with the concept of worldbuilding that a map of Middle-earth represents the topic on Wikipedia, and his impact in both fantasy and beyond regarding how a world that is not this actual globe we live on is perceived and presented has continuing afterechoes that don't look to disappear anytime soon. At the same time, what exactly worldbuilding IS is a hardly an agreed upon formal standard anywhere, and the amount of work that's been put into developing a story setting in any number of media, not just that of fantasy novels much less novels in general, is vast, varied and takes many particular forms. Meanwhile, Tolkien's own approach as to what worldbuilding is comes out of his own particular personal and philosophical conclusions, and doesn't always take the form of what a more stereotypical approach to the subject might be in the current day. What makes the idea of Middle-earth so compelling to readers entranced by his works, and what drives them to learn more about it or to elaborate on it in their own right? What other creators, in fiction and beyond it, successfully approach similar levels of immersion, and are there particular points of commonality to be found there? Are there particular points in Tolkien's stylistic approach that signal notable strengths in creating the sense of Middle-earth as an actual place, and how much of that might lie in a difference between received perception and the reality of the work? And how much does Jared's own forthcoming fantasy novel drive this discussion? Gemma Sutton is currently playing Aladdin in this year’s Hackney Empire pantomime, marking the creative team’s 20th anniversary. You may have seen her in Gypsy (with Imelda Staunton), Sweet Charity at the Watermill, The Rink, Strictly Ballroom, Hairspray, Legally Blonde and many other shows. We had a chat in the green room where everyone who works at the Empire goes to eat and relax. It was a rare one show day, with only a matinee, so Gemma kindly stuck around after the show to talk to me. Aladdin is running at the Hackney Empire until January 6th 2019.

WE SHOULD NOT LIMIT GOD Most people do not realize the power of WORDS. When I speak about things, circumstances and even my city, do I realize that I am actually laying a foundation for my life and surroundings? Words are spirit vehicles. When you drive past a great Watermill in Rondebosch, Cape Town or even in the Great Karoo when you see a windmill - you see the instrument that actually are tapping in the wind that was there for ages but now are being harvested for good. It is being used into an essential power source.
