There are definitely no prizes on offer for identifying the music on this track! It is the lovely aria, ‘Sheep may safely graze' from Bach's Cantata BWV 208. How precious it is to know that we have been delivered from the orbit of our preoccupations to become the beloved ‘sheep of the Lord's pasture' – and even, as He sees us, His crown and masterpiece; His living poem, as Paul puts it, created anew in Christ Jesus to do the good deeds He has planned and purposed all along for us to do. (Eph. 2:10)

Johann Sebastian Bach was incredibly generous with the flute. He wrote several full scale sonatas, gave the flute has starring roles in two of the Brandenburg concerti, and beautiful obbligato parts in countless arias, but there is just one solo partita. The slow movement from his A minor flute Partita-a Sarabande -is a dance form with both Arab and Spanish origins and has a silky, sensual quality. Imagine a kind of "dance of the seven veils. " Way back in 1583, King Philip II of Spain had the Sarabande banned because it was said to ‘excite bad emotions'.Georg Philip Telemann, Fantaisie No. 12J.S. Don't you just "know" when someone has put good work into a product just from your first experience with it? We think this is why Bach never feels lazy. While Bach excels at portraying a shepherd's pasture with music, we hear how some contemporary examples from film and TV are so much more widely varied in quality. Bach's musical pasture is so idyllic that we can use it to de-stress from our modern lives! Cantata BWV 104: https://youtu.be/eZaL8XakQLo Freesound #183454 CC license
In this episode, Dr. Bettina Varwig of Cambridge University joins us to discuss a wide range of Bach-related topics, starting with Cantata BWV 131 (Aus der Tiefen rufe ich), which Bach Society Houston will present in a streamed Passiontide concert later this month (March 2021). We also hear about Dr. Varwig's recent research into how Bach’s Leipzig congregants listened to his cantatas in ways that differ from the “attentive listening” model now associated with Western classical music culture. The conversation concludes with a preview of the essay collection Rethinking Bach, which Dr. Varwig is currently editing for Oxford University Press. Read more about Dr. Varwig here. Instrumentation, text and translation(s), and additional resources for BWV 131 can be found here and here.

As part of Radio 3’s celebration of forests this autumn, Michael Berkeley’s guest is the American novelist Richard Powers. His latest novel, The Overstory, is his twelfth, and it’s a monumental work which was entirely inspired by trees. It all started when Powers was teaching in California, and visited the giant redwoods there. That encounter amounted he says to “a religious conversion”. He realised he’d been blind to these amazing creatures all his life. So, to make up for lost time, in his new Booker long-listed novel he gives trees a voice: "A woman sits on the ground, leaning against a pine. Its bark presses hard against her back, as hard as life. Its needles scent the air and a force hums in the heart of the wood. Her ears tune down to the lowest frequencies. The tree is saying things, in words before words." Inspired by his passion for trees, Richard Powers has now moved to live in the forests of the Smoky Mountains which run along the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. "In 15 to 20 minutes, I can be up and walking in these forests that are recovering from a century-and-a-half of logging and see the way that nature persists and transforms and perseveres." On a brief trip to London, he looks back over a thirty-year writing career in which each novel is more audacious than the last. But one theme runs through all his writing: the power of music, and Powers plays the cello, guitar, clarinet and saxophone. His music choices include Dowland’s “Time Stands Still”, Bartok’s String Quartet No. 4, Bach’s Cantata BWV 100, and Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata.

BACH Johann-Sebastian (1685-1750) Cantata BWV 147 “Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben” “Jesus bleibet meine Freude” (final choral) J.S. Bach wrote Cantata 147 to celebrate the feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary and it was first performed during his first year at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig on July 2, 1723. In 1716 he had composed a six movement work with the same title during his time in Weimar where it was intended to be sung on the 4th Sunday of Advent. The revisions he undertook for the performance in Leipzig included substantial citatations from the Song of Mary (the Magnificat in Luke, chapter 1) thus making it fit into the liturgical requirements for the Feast of the Visitation. The text for the original Weimar work was composed by the librettist Salomon Franck and although it was not unacceptable for the Feast of the Visitation, Bach expanded from the work from six into ten movements to satisfy all the liturgical requirements in Leipzig. The additional movements included three recitatives and the concluding movements of the first section, as well as the replacement of the final movement of the work with another stanza from Martin Jahn's chorale text. ... read more about this program on : http://www.bachcollegiumparis.org/repertoire/bach-cantate-bwv-147 © All right reserved Bach Collegium Paris - Paris, France

The castaway on Desert Island Discs this week is the literary critic, Sir Frank Kermode. One of the most influential teachers of his age, he is credited with bringing the new literary theory of Structuralism to this country. Something, as he admits to Sue Lawley, he now profoundly regrets.
