Lionel Messi's decision to join Inter Miami of Major League Soccer had historical precedent on many levels. Despite it's failure, the first MLS team in Miami -- the Fusion -- attempted to harness the unique location and demographic makeup of the south Florida to the benefit of soccer in America. With a strong connection to Latin America, stars like Carlos Valderrama wore Fusion colors in an attempt to create fan interest and help grow the game in the United States. While those elements felt familiar, luring the best players in the world and greatest player of all time to Miami to play for the second iteration of an MLS team in the city seemed unlikely. And, yet, Messi arrived in 2023 and changed the landscape of sports in the city and soccer in America. Michelle Kaufman is a long-tenured sports writer for the Miami Herald, with a deep focus on international sports. She was working for the paper when the Fusion played and then saw the establishment of Inter Miami. Kaufman covered Beckham putting roots in the city, working with the Mas brothers to buy the club and ultimately bringing Messi to the team. She joined Founding Futbol to share her recollections and insights about the evolution of soccer in Miami and America. She also talks about the significance of Messi's decision and shares how she's seen it impact the city. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America.Visit our website for more information: FoundingFutbol.com.

Carlos and I discuss many of the top prospects who passed through his and his staff's tutelage this year and reflect on the important of winning in helping develop players. Enjoy! If you like my Giants' related content, now's a great time to become a There R Giants' subscriber as I'm just starting to roll out a host of season wrap ups and roll into Prospect Ranking season, culminating with a brand new Top 50. Greetings Footballland guests, patrons and earholders! There's a growing excitement here at Footballland HQ. The park is slowly taking shape. We haven't yet built anything as such, but if 90% of the work is in the design, then Footballland is 28% complete! We are thrilled to announce THREE more rides for your pleasure. Arsene Wenger's World Cup Mayhem Le Prof is a big advocate for ruining things by overdoing them - just look at his relentless lobbying for a World Cup every two years. Nobody but Wenger wants this to happen, so we at Footballland are prepared to do the world a favour. We're going to pay the ex-Arsenal boss £6 million a year to wander around Footballland making guests at the park overdo their fun instead. Yes, with Arsene's Double It, you won't be able to stop enjoying yourself, even if it physically hurts! Shit House Not content with hiring Pepe to defecate on customers' car bonnets, Ryan wants yet another display of the dark arts inside the world's first football theme park. Shit House involves one lucky punter having their home transported brick by brick to Qatar to stage a special football version of the 90s kids' TV show Fun House, presented by Carlos Valderrama and the Da Silva twins. See No Medieval, Hear No Medieval, Speak No Medieval Mark has been on Wikipedia again. This time he's disappeared down the ancient ball games rabbit hole (ooh-er) and proposes a giant brawl with a sheep's bladder one day a year at Footballland. Whoever's holding the ball last, wins!
In this episode of the SHIFT podcast, we connect with Steve Ralston, legendary MLS player and original MLS draft pick in 1996 to the Tampa Bay Mutiny. Steve's journey to the professional ranks was anything but normal. He never started on his high school team, wasn't the best player on his club team, and attended a local community college in St. Louis his first year of college. Steve then transferred to Florida International U, where he says the coach never actually saw him play - crazy! Steve went onto lead the nation in scoring his junior year, and shares about the surreal experience of going from having a poster of Carlos Valderrama in his dorm room to sitting next to him in the locker room! Through the ups and downs of his successful pro career, Steve dives into what he believes gave him the greatest success, his character, consistency, and grit! You will also hear some good stories from Wells and Steve during their playing days together with the New England Revolution. After Steve's playing career ended, he moved into coaching with the Houston Dynamo and San Jose Earthquakes with former teammate Dominic Kinnear and recently moved cross country with his family to Philidelphia in another significant transition. Long-time South Florida Sun-Sentinel soccer columnist Jeff Rusnak joins to discuss the rich past, transitional present and promising future of one of American pro soccer’s most venerable, yet historically underrated venues – Ft. Lauderdale, Florida’s Lockhart Stadium. Originally built in 1959 as an American football and track venue for four high schools in the region and named after a former city commissioner, the modest bleacher-constructed Lockhart was unwittingly transformed into the country’s first de facto “soccer specific stadium” when the (original) North American Soccer League’s Miami Toros moved 32 miles north from the cavernous Orange Bowl to become 1977’s Ft. Lauderdale Strikers. The Strikers became a South Florida sports phenomenon during their seven NASL seasons at the crackerbox Lockhart, boasting world-class talent (Gordon Banks, Gerd Müller, Teófilo Cubillas, George Best) and magnetic personalities (Ron Newman, Ray Hudson) that quickly endeared the club and the sport to an adoring fan base. Numerous lower division clubs kept the soccer flame alive after the Strikers moved (to Minnesota in 1983) and the NASL died – until 1998, when Major League Soccer investor-operator Ken Horowitz debuted the curiously-named “Miami” Fusion expansion franchise at a refurbished Lockhart, featuring Colombian star Carlos Valderrama. Despite winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2001 under the dynamic coaching of former Striker fan-favorite Hudson, the league contracted the Fusion after just four season – and the stadium again became the intermittent home to lower-league teams (and even FAU college football) until 2016. But Lockhart refuses to give up the ghost, as an aggressive demolition and rebuild of the abandoned facility now becomes the focal point of a new David Beckham/Jorge Mas-owned MLS franchise called Inter Miami CF set to debut in 2020 – sans a permanent home in the city of Miami proper. Will Lockhart again rekindle the original Striker magic – perhaps even permanently? WE THANK our tremendous sponsors for their continued support of the show: Streaker Sports, Audible, 503 Sports, OldSchoolShirts.com, and SportsHistoryCollectibles.com!
Head Coach of USL League 1 side Chattanooga Red Wolves – Tim Hankinson – joins us to have a chat about many of his best memories as a coach of over 30 years. Tim talks about the early days of his coaching career, as he steered Alabama A&M to the semi finals and final of the NCAA Division Men’s Soccer Tournament. We discuss Tim’s stint in Iceland, player development in India and Jamaica, founding Charleston Battery, the Nike Project 40, Klinsmann’s tenure as USMNT Head Coach, Colorado Rapids, Carlos Valderrama, his targets for the coming season and the new USL structure.
