FROM INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S DAY TO ELECTION PROTECTION 2024 TO THE MIDDLE EAST     We start with the legendary Indigenous leader-lawyer CHASE IRON EYES, who gives us a brilliant overview of the current state of Indigenous America & Leonard Peltier. The great grassroots organizer ANDREA MILLER of the Center for Common Ground gives us a guide to phone banking to spark voter turnout in critical states. JASON BERLIN of Field Team Six fills us on his unique phone banking operation, focussed especially on young potential voters. MYLA RESON asks Jason about what the polls are saying, especially in Montana, Texas & Florida. The idea of switching and offsetting votes from fringe parties in and out of swing states comes from RUSSELL GREENE. Threats to FEMA disaster workers in North Carolina are exposed by ILENE PROCTOR in Asheville. MIKE HERSH gives us a quick introduction to a civil discussion of the situation in the Middle East. Civilian deaths, land development issues, economic resources and spiritual forces are discussed by LYNN FEINERMAN. STEVE CARUSO raises issues about the horrifying slaughter in Gaza. Massive underground oil resources are discussed by DAVID GRACE. CONNOR MURRAY of the Council for a Livable World tells us how his legendary organization fights against nuclear weapons. TATANKA BRICCA expands on the links between nuclear power & the Atomic Bomb(s). To conclude we cope with Thom Hartmann's terrifying outline of the various ways this year's election could be stolen. We will go deeper into this profoundly unsettled situation the next week.  STAY TUNED!!!

In February 2022, Stuart and William, co-hosts of the well-established The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast, launched the new mini-series 'Indigenous Voices'. For this next instalment, they were joined by Chase Iron Eyes for an interesting conversation, when they revisited a listener question from Adriana in The Netherlands, which was originally discussed in this podcast episode Direct Action, Does It Work? Chase Iron Eyes is an American Indian activist, attorney, politician, and a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He is a member of the Lakota People's Law Project, and a co-founder of the Native American news website, Last Real Indians https://lastrealindians.com/. Chase talks about the systems of law, economy, government, media, all being designed, and these systems are framed to protect capital and property. He explores with us how corporations can destroy a river, but seemingly not face the ramifications, together with telling us about the history of his people, how they've been labelled as barbarians and heathens. He talks of the defence of Mother Earth and how we have it within ourselves to avert this climate crisis. To continue this new mini-series (Indigenous Voices), the question put to Chase was, "Does direct action get anyone, anywhere?" with a subtle extra question of whether Chase has any examples, from personal experience, of what doors have been opened, or closed due to direct action? More episodes in the Indigenous Voices mini-series will be recorded in due course with Chase and others, often only available to watch/listen by our Indigenous Champion support tier backers, on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/thepeoplescountryside You don't need to be an expert in the subject matter or in indigenous cultures to enjoy our new mini-series. Just a willingness to explore the unknown, the hard truths, the indigenous viewpoint, and see where it takes us. What can we learn from them and what can they learn from us? What can we learn from each other? Join us then for this interesting, and often philosophical episode of the podcast. You'll likely need to watch/listen to this more than once, as there's so much in there, and much learning to be gleaned from Chase's wise words. This podcast's overall themes are nature, philosophy, climate, the human condition, sustainability, and social justice. Our very packed GREEP Zoom #59 opens with a deep, difficult descent into the terrible crisis of homelessness.  As the Democrats fail to stem the eviction crisis, we look toward 3 million Americans shelterless and on the streets. We hear from RAY MCCLENDON of the Atlanta NAACP about the terrifying fascist assault of the gerrymandered Georgia legislature against the state's democratic election apparatus. MAUREEN TAYLOR tells us of the crisis in Michigan's voting procedures and the mass marches against it. CHARLES MORELAND lays out the major progress being made toward the upcoming August 27-30 DREAM events for DC Statehood, a Green Earth & Justice. JOEL SEGAL describes the upcoming August 30 Summit/Roundtable for voting rights & justice at the Plymouth Church in DC.  Joel also lays out plans for SMART ALEC, the exciting new coalition for drafting progressive legislation. CHASE IRON EYES confirms there will be a Drum Circle in Lafayette Park the morning of August 30, followed by the delivery of a solar panel and plan for a Clean/Green White House. We end with an amazing report from Arizona and RAY LUTZ on how he, JOHN BRAKEY & STEVE ROSENFELD turned a complete fiasco into an important democracy learning event for the whole nation. There is much more in this action-packed session on grassroots democracy.  Don't miss it!

Jesse Phelps, media coordinator for the Lakota Peoples Law Project, part of the Romero Institute, has found his work more important than ever during the Covid19 outbreak. The Lakota and Oglala peoples in South Dakota have formed mutual aid efforts to screen people coming into and their reservations for the virus. Given their poverty and lack of access to quality medical care, it is imperative for them to prevent the virus from getting to them in the first place. However SD Governor Kristi Noem disagrees and is trying to shut down their health-screening checkpoints. This media strategy — petitions, phone calls, social media posts — are being crafted and implemented right here in Ojai. Phelps, a veteran writer and journalist, has been busier than ever at his home in Ojai. Working with Native American leaders Madonna Thunderhawk (one of the greatest names ever) and Chase Iron Eyes, he is helping these beleaguered peoples stand their ground as threats — pipelines across their sacred sites, diseases of poverty, and now, a pandemic — become existential. Phelps has been working for half a decade with the LPLP and Romero Institute. The effort started when Lakota grandmothers sought out famous Iran-Contra scandal investigative attorney Daniel Sheehan to help with the cultural genocide that was taking place when native American youth were being taken from their families to be raised by Christian white families until very recently. We talk about growing up in Ojai with hippie parents and friends, with a freedom unimaginable to many of today's helicopter-parented children, the hangouts and the mischief that was the daily routine. Jesse also talks about Michael Jackson's visit to the Ojai library during the height of his fame, and Jesse's efforts to get Jacko to do a public service announcement for the National Library Association, based in his "Read It" libretto, written to the beat of "Beat It." Didn't happen, but Phelps did get a sweet and thoughtful letter in reply. And a wonderful story for the Ojai Quarterly. Phelps talks about the incredible opportunity presented by the current crisis to make a societal shift toward sustainable energy, as well as the energy of today's youth and their ability to transcend the "politics as usual" that plagues the present day. We do not talk about "The Last Dance," about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls, Jesse's love of film and of John Paul Jones' naval victories for both the American Revolution and the Russian empire.

This week on “Rebel Hearts”: Kristie speaks with Daniel P Sheehan, a Harvard-trained attorney, who has led or participated in some of the most important public interest cases of the last 40 years. His lawsuits include the Watergate and Iran-Contra Scandals, the Pentagon Papers, and the killing of Karen Silkwood. In 1973-74, he served as amicus counsel to the American Civil Liberties Union regarding the occupation of Wounded Knee. In 1980, he co-founded the Christic Institute, a nonprofit public interest law center that—among many other cases—prosecuted members of the Ku Klux Klan in Greensboro, North Carolina, and represented victims of the Three Mile Island disaster in Pennsylvania. He is one of the small number of attorneys to be invited to join the Mni Wiconi Legal Defense and Offense Committee, along with Bruce Ellison. His autobiography, „The People’s Advocate“ was published by Counterpoint Press.    In this interview, Daniel shares about his work with Lakota People’s Law Project, starting with the drafting of the legal strategy for the federal Justice Department’s lawsuit against the State of South Dakota for its violations of the Indian Child Welfare Act. Daniel talks about how more than 700 native children are being taken away every year from their families by social services.    Daniel was present at Standing Rock during opposition to the Dakota Access pipeline. He tells us about his work as defense counsel for two water protectors facing severe charges—Chase Iron Eyes and HolyElk Lafferty. Comparing the peaceful protest at Standing Rock with the events in Mississippi and Alabama in the 1960s, he talks about the parallels that he has been witnessing with both events.    A lot of the mainstream media has been portraying the water protectors at Standing Rock as trouble makers. Find out why the private security firm Tiger Swan was hired to create false propaganda and what is behind the strategy of trying to categorize these movements as terrorism. Daniel also tells us why the Dakota Access Pipeline was rerouted and the racial discrimination connected to it, creating reports that there would be no disparate impact on any racial minority- this reports excluded the whole Sioux Nation.    Find out why Daniel calls the events at Standing Rock an "Unlawful Criminal Conspiracy" and why bringing light to these events has the ability to create a positive ripple effect across the nation.
