Today on People Doing Physics, we're delighted to welcome Charlotte Simmonds, an astronomer with an incredible journey and a woman on a quest. Of all the guests we had the pleasure to welcome here, Charlotte stands out as one of the most determined, driven by an unshakable fascination for the universe, and our place within it. If astronomy was always her end goal, she first studied and started her career as a music teacher. But when the time was right, she finally embraced her first love and passion and navigated her way through the various challenges that academia invariably presents. Now a postdoc in the Galaxy Formation and Evolution Group at the Cavendish, it looks like she's found her rightful place in the universe and is already preparing for her next move. With Charlotte, we'll talk about taking chances, the importance of representations in science and her efforts to demonstrate that no matter who you are and how different you may be, there's a place for you in science if you want it…Useful linksDetails on Charlotte's research are on the Galaxy Formation and Evolution Group website.Watch one of Charlotte's talk: "Unveiling the Mysteries of the Early Universe with JWST", part of the Cambridge Physics Centre lecture seriesTo learn more about the Cavendish Laboratory, or if you are interested in joining us or studying with us, go to the Cavendish website.Share and join the conversationHelp us get better by taking our quick survey. There are so many anecdotes about how stargazing has helped people cope with their mental health afflictions, including anxiety and depression. The Office of Astronomy for Development in South Africa is now working on studies to discover the science behind those personal stories. Joyful Mdhluli shares about the work that's being done and gives some tips on how to turn an ordinary stargazing experience into something more. This week on the podcast, I talk about why I'm against the idea that the Knicks should pair star guard Jalen Brunson with another superstar player.
This week, Tommy is joined by Matteo Bocelli who recently released his debut album, “Matteo.” His self-titled debut features 12 tracks, in a mix of English and his native Italian, including the single “Chasing Stars,” written by Ed & Matthew Sheeran. Matteo's sound is so uniquely him and it is on full display as he embarks on his first solo step into the spotlight. Yes, he has released music previously with his father, the incredible Andrea Bocelli, but this album is Matteo's baby. Today, Matteo opens up about when he first started to fall in love with singing, trusting the timing of when he was meant to go full-force in pursuing his passion for music, how his dad has always been the most influential person in his life, learning from one of the greatest voices in the world and the pressure that comes with that, developing his own sound and stepping into his own artistry, what excites him the most with his debut album, how he has always admired Ed Sheeran and hopes to collaborate with him in the future, what his first world tour has been like, and the greatest life lessons he has learned from his father. Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants
The year 2024 is soon to be upon us, so perhaps it's time to start thinking about the 2024-25 free agent class. Headlining that class, assuming the Yankees don't extend him, will be Juan Soto entering his age-26 season. Should the San Francisco Giants make a serious run at Soto, as they have in recent years with Bryce Harper, Aaron Judge, Carlos Correa, and Shohei Ohtani? The Giants absolutely should, but fans have learned by now not to expect the SF Giants to land the big fish, even if fans accept that the Giants are giving it their best effort.Among the other questions asked and answered on today's edition of the Locked On Giants podcast:What is the Giants' payroll status for 2024 after committing $7 million to Jung Hoo Lee? In your opinion could they afford to sign two more nine-figure free agents this year like Blake Snell and Matt Chapman? Why have I heard literally nothing about the Giants pursuing Shota Imanaga? He would help capture Japan fan interest, and would be upper rotation. Great to pair with Snell. It seems like every player wants to be a Dodger and no one wants to be a Giant. It starts with drafting a developing star talent. Farhan Zaidi has failed to do this so far. Is there any hope this will happen in the future? What is the difference between generously giving Carlos Correa a 13-year deal when you know he will not be good at the end of it vs. being much more conservative with long term deals for starting pitchers?Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

Come join Amy and David Alton the creators of Out Chasing Stars. How'd they create that? Simple, they sailed around the world, literally chasing stars and exploring all the world has to offer over a 4 year period, all the while documenting as much as they could from costs to videoing the experience. They post their videos on their youtube channel outchasingstars. They can also be seen on their blog, outchasingstars.com. Vivien chats to a range of locals from school teachers to climate activists who participated in a six-week leadership course. Hear how community activists are hopeful and resilient in the face of a changing climate. [7:30] Interview with founder of the Refugee and Asylum Seeker Toy Drive, Christopher Stenton, about the charity that aims to give a toy to every asylum seeker child living in Australia this year. Since its humble beginnings in 2015, the Toy Drive has grown and grown with volunteers now working across different states to help bring joy to children in need. Christopher describes the many ways individuals, workplaces and companies can get involved. [7:45] Activist and co-founder of the youth climate movement Zero Hour, Jamie Margolin, speaks about the state of the environment. Jamie denounces Western colonialism, describing how early colonialist values have evolved into the post-industrial, capitalist system of today. Jamie looks at how different systems of oppression - from social inequalities, to racism and gender inequality - must be taken into account when addressing the impacts of climate change. [8:00] Research director at the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Restoration and co-author of Climate Code Red, David Spratt, discusses how climate change could lead to the breakdown of civil society. David looks at how food insecurity has caused civil unrest, referencing the Arab Spring as a response to rising wheat prices in Egypt. David explains how these situations are likely to be more frequent without serious government and industry reform. This mix was a tricky one....After listening to over 250 tunes, i ended up with five that i liked. With this being nowhere near enough for a mix, I decided to make up the numbers with my older tunes. I have added the odd one to a mix before but never this many. There just seemed to ba a distinct lack of decent tunes last week. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, it certainly proved a head scratcher.
