Sherri Coale's Hall of Fame coaching career was full of highs - and some lows. But through it all, she became a powerhouse leader and teacher. After hitting the goals, setting new ones and hitting those too, Sherri realized…then what? In her words, “maybe it's not necessarily a thing to check off a list, but a way you want to live.” This conversation is unique and fun for the sports lovers (and also those who don't know the difference between a touchdown and a three-point-shot

I could force myself to be fairly good in a lot of things, but I couldn't be really good in anything where I didn't have an intense interest." – Charlie Munger Our Team Values & Behaviors: Curious: practice invested listening Honest: give direct feedback Intentional: provide purposeful action What is our edge as a TEAM? Our purpose, our values, and our behaviors. We are ACTIVELY doing it. Raw and Simple: We cut through the noise and address the fundamental issues leaders face. Our straightforward approach helps teams confront what they're not doing and empowers them to take actionable steps toward improvement. In The Arena: We don't just talk about leadership principles—we live them. Every member of our team actively practices the strategies we coach, ensuring real-world insights and practical solutions. Take Risks: We're unafraid to push boundaries and challenge conventional thinking. We help leaders take bold actions, even if it means stepping out of their comfort zones or facing tough consequences. Love being on a team that "makes the water rise." We all are better for being together on the same team. Gratitude – You can't roll up your sleeves and clench your fists at the same time. Living with gratitude is about recognizing and appreciating what you have. This will change the lens in which you view the world. Geron (overheard from Coach Mike Gundy): “I can't believe they pay us to do this.” It is so much fun working with this team and the reward is that we get to keep doing it. So grateful. The makeup of a great team… They are tough, they have fun together, they care about each other, and they have that gritty humility about them. “Humble enough to listen, gritty enough to apply." Our prep calls – The calls before the calls. We learn so much from our preparation together. It's an open forum to share ideas, disagree, talk through stories, and figure out how to make people better. Some of my favorite times. How to work with the employee who just won't fully buy-in. Be curious, not judgemental. Ask questions. LISTEN. Care. As Sherri said, “Nobody wants to sleepwalk through life.” We need to figure out what makes them come alive and help them bring that to the team.

Her new book about her journey in sports and life is called Rooted to Rise. a collection of essays about people—some have achieved extraordinary worldly success, and some have led what society might label “ordinary lives.” But the stories are far less about what her people have done and far more about who they are, or were, or always will be through the impact they had on those around them. As Coale writes: "The people I write about in Rooted to Rise are my people. But everybody has some. I hope you recognize and remember yours through the stories of mine." REGISTER NOW! This bright beautiful light is Superhero of Love, SHERRI COALE, the Hall of Fame Basketball Coach who led her players with LOVE to their greatness, their most magnificent selves - inside and out. Her book ROOTED TO RISE: The Redwood Legacies of Life-Anchoring People is a tribute to just some of the many players she coached, and some of the people in her life who inspired her for whom she is profoundly grateful (who you know were profoundly grateful themselves for this giant heart on earth!) Listen in if you have young people in your life for whom you care deeply about their hearts and evolution, if you love competitive sports, if you are a teacher, a coach, a parent or if you just want to be inspired to lead your life with love. If you are a writer or wish to be, you will love how this book came to life!
In today's episode, I have a fascinating conversation with Robin Coale about how she uses her remarkable spiritual gifts and extensive knowledge in shamanism to help people discover and bring back lost parts of themselves so they may achieve wholeness within their lives. Sherri Coale is a native Oklahoman. She grew up about thirty miles to the right side of the Red River in a small rural town where she fell in love with reading, writing, and basketball, not necessarily in that order. In 1987 after a highly successful collegiate career at Oklahoma Christian, she hung up her high tops, moving from the court to the sideline as she began what would become a Hall of Fame career as a Women's Basketball Coach. For 25 years, Sherri Coale served as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma where she is the winningest women's basketball coach in OU history. She built a powerhouse program in Norman that appeared in 19 straight NCAA tournaments and competed in three Final Fours. Sherri Coale is a member of the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Women's Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Christian Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma FCA Hall of Fame, the Norman High School Wall of Fame, and has “Home of” signs that flank both entrances to the small town of Healdton where she was born and raised and will be eternally indebted. During her illustrious career at the University of Oklahoma, in addition to coaching the Sooners, Coale participated in USA Basketball as an assistant coach in 2001 where the squad won a bronze medal, and a head coach in the World University Games in 2013 where her USA squad defeated Russia on their home court to bring home the gold. In addition to competitive excellence inside the lines both nationally and internationally, Sherri Coale has received numerous accolades and recognitions for her players' performance academically as well as their team community service through the years. Maximizing her players' skills both on and off the court has always been her goal. Sherri Coale is an author, a master motivator, an engaging speaker, a gifted writer, and a keen observer of everyday life. She and her husband, Dane, have been married for 35 years. They have two children, one daughter-in-law, and one adorable granddaughter around which their universe currently spins. You can find her weekly blog, “A Weigh of Life” at sherricoale.com. Rooted to Rise, an Amazon bestseller, is her first book. Coach had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “'Coach' is a term of an endearment. It's one of the most kind and respectful things someone can say about you” (5:00). “My job [as a coach and a parent] is to help you think and grow, and that means we're not always going to be friends” (8:50). “I would be most comfortable being a little bit different than the athletes that I coach” (12:00). “Regardless of whether you have a faith or not, if you can stop for 15 minutes and sing some hymns and spend some time together, your day would be better” (15:10). “We have to take care of each other” (21:20). “Who are you really bound to, what are you really tied to, that gives you sturdiness, that anchors you, if everything you do is on a whim or is based on how you feel or what you want?” (21:55). “I want to do things that matter. I want to do things that move me. I want to do things that impact other people” (24:35). “There is more to life than the outcome of games” (29:15). “Coaches are choosing to do other things before they find themselves in a place where they resent what they love” (29:55). “It's so easy for high level coaches to get caught up in this world that is make believe” (32:10). “[Coaching] is just something that I did. What I [am is my kids'] mom and Sherri” (35:20). “None of us have only one side. We have to have a lot of different sides to accomplish all the different things we want to accomplish” (37:25). “[Coaching and writing] are very similar as professions. You can't do either one of them by putting your heart on the shelf. You have to just go at it. Full throttle.” (40:20). “You don't want to put everything in the spice cabinet into your recipe” (49:20). “We have so many opportunities every single day to set people up for something great” (55:25). “I don't know if a piece of writing ever really gets to completion” (57:40). “When the coaching world was getting a little bit heavy and I needed to escape, I would get lost in a bookstore” (58:20). “What you learn as you get older and more experienced in the business of coaching is that you have to detach enough to be able to see everything as information” (1:02:30). “I wrote it because it was true to me and I thought it might help people” (1:04:15). Additionally, you can follow coach on Twitter and purchase her book, Rooted to Rise: The Redwood Legacies of Life Anchoring People, at either Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Thank you so much to Sherri for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. #89: For 25 years Sherri Coale served as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Oklahoma where she is the winningest coach in OU history. She lead her program to three Final Fours, won six Big12 Regular season Championships, and four Big12 Tournament Championships, had nineteen straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and made nine Sweet 16 appearances. She also served as a coach for USA Basketball. In 2016 Coale was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. She is a master motivator, an engaging speaking, a gifted writer, and a keen observer of everyday life, and most importantly her faith drives everything she does. On the show she shares everything from her story growing up, following your curiosity, doing your job with excellence, being willing to ask, showing up, failure, daily diligence, and what makes your heart sing. She also just realized a new book called Rooted to Rise, which is the redwood legacies of life-anchoring people. It is a great read and a perfect Christmas gift for anyone as we get closer to Christmas. This is a great conversation with one of the all time greatest coaches, so be sure and take notes. Enjoy the show!

Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 The Hard Makes It Good - A league of their own — Tom Hanks — when Geena Davis (Dottie Henson quit saying it just got too hard). “ “Of course it's hard. If it wasn't everybody would do it. It's the hard that makes it great.” Writing - A writing life may seem to lie somewhere on the other side of the moon from a life in athletics, but the two are scary similar in the things that they require. They're both ridiculously hard, even if they sometimes look easy. And the reward for either isn't what you get at the end, it's what you go through to get there. The process in both is the prize. Great teachers — "Great teachers crack open a door and cue the siren's song that lures you in. Once inside, they give you hard. And then they let you decide what to do about it. I live indebted to them for the view.” The art of asking — Dr. Darryl Tippens — a Shakspere class... “I admired all he knew, but I admired what he did with it even more.” “His questioning and blatant unwillingness to give us the answers made us work for our conclusions. The process and the product stayed with us. We learned that what we strain for, sticks.” The job — “if a leader's primary job is to be a dealer of hope, Whitney Hand was a leader of rare air.” It's not about the trophy - After winning the state championship, on the bus ride home with the team, Sherri noticed that she had left the trophy behind accidentally. And she said,“it so had never been about what you get in the end.” Confidence is self-governed. Nobody can give it to you and nobody can take it away. I've found that regularly doing hard things helps me earn more confidence. The makeup of a great point guard: An outward perspective. They care more about setting their teammates up than themselves. A capacity for understanding what each person needs. Athletic eyes - They have a broad spectrum. They see things before they happen. Sturdy, innate confidence. Sherri's Grandma: She was very observant. She spoke with purpose. No wasted words. "She taught me how to be observant and listen." "Coaches are great tellers. They aren't always great listeners. Questions are so much better than statements." Great mentors don't give you the answer. They teach you how to think. They teach you how to figure it out on your own. What makes up a great player (beyond the skill to score a basketball)? The intangibles: They build relationships They're observant They pay attention They are intentional about how they "do life" What do you value most? "Curiosity." "You can't wring your hands and roll up your sleeves at the same time." Advice: What makes your heart sing? Work to figure that out. What is that thing in you?

In this episode, I discuss three important issues of the day about school law with the people who really know the subject - three students. My guests are our kids Cecilia Coale (17, and a senior at the local high school), Camden Coale (14, a freshman), and Casey Coale (12, in seventh grade). (Their older brother Caleb is in college and could not join us.) We talk about (1) book banning, and in particular a recent Tennessee school-board vote to restrict access to "Maus," (2) dress codes, including a Forney ISD initiative to restrict the wearing of dresses, and (3) the new Texas law requiring the display of the national motto if a "durable poster" of it is given to a public school by a private donor. I hope you enjoy the episode as much as we had fun doing it!

While lawyers are used to reading and speaking legalese, breaking complex legal concepts into digestible bits is a talent not all lawyers have. But, with legal issues and court proceedings frequently in the news, it's becoming an increasingly necessary skill set. This is particularly true when attorneys need to speak to the media about legal issues and cases. This episode's guest, David Coale, a partner at Lynn Pinker Hurst & Schwegmann, LLP, has developed a talent for addressing hot legal topics in the media. David shares with Todd Smith and Jody Sanders how he uses his blog and podcast to produce media commentary about various aspects of the law that anyone can easily understand. He also offers tips for attorneys discussing their own cases or broader legal concepts in the media and how to protect their clients' interests while educating the public.Love the show? We then move on to the international scene, where we talk about NTV wanting Satoru Sayama to join AJPW but Giant Baba wouldn't stand for it, Riki Choshu running wild in New Japan, Ric Flair & Harley Race trading the NWA Title in/around New Zealand, Ricky Steamboat returning from his 2 month retirement in JCP, Tim Horner scoring a major upset over Road Warrior Hawk on WTBS, and Hacksaw Duggan heeling in Florida en route to returning as a babyface hero in Mid-South that same week. It's also in Mid-South that we have the reason why Mark requested this week: We have Mr. Wrestling II completing his heel turn plus Jim Cornette throwing a big party for the Midnight Express, setting up The Last Stampede in the process. All this and so much more on a great episode of BTS!!!!Timestamps:0:00:00 WWF0:41:14 Int'l: AJPW, NJPW, New Zealand, England, Montreal, Stampede, Vancouver, EMLL, & UWA1:20:24 Classic Commercial Break1:25:06 Halftime (including Scott Hall discussion)2:05:23 USA East: JCP, GCW, CWF, SECW, & Memphis2:39:55 USA West: Mid-South, Central States, WCCW, SWCW, AWA, & Portland4:03:09 Patreon Preview: APW King of the Indies 2001 unintentionally becomes the proof of concept for ROHTo support the show and get access to exclusive rewards like special members-only monthly themed shows, go to our Patreon page at Patreon.com/BetweenTheSheets and become an ongoing Patron.
