On this edition of Parallax Views, Rutgers University's Director of the Center for Security, Race, and Rights, Sahar Aziz, returns to the program to discuss the recent House Committee on Education and the Workforce hearings on antisemitism and why they resemble something more akin to the McCarthyite witch hunts of the House on American Activities during the Cold War than an honest effort to combat antisemitism. These hearings, she argues, are more about shutting down political criticism of Israel than fighting antisemitism. We'll also delve into some of the key points covered in Sahar's book The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom and discuss the Islamophobia-industrial complex that's especially been prevalent in America since 9/11 and the Global War on Terror. Moreover, Prof. Aziz will offer her thoughts on the Anti-Defamation League, which has received harsh criticism in recent years with Jonathan Greenblatt at its head, and its activities against pro-Palestinian and Arab American political activists. Most importantly, however we focus on how the House Commitee on Education and the Workforce investigations into antisemitism, which involves figures like Rep. Elise Stefanik and Rep. Virginia Fox, have attacked the Center for Security, Race, and Right as well as academics like Noura Erakat and Juan Cole. Sahar will address some of the allegations made by the House Commitee against CSRR and delve into how this is connected to broader Republican Party efforts to tamper down academic freedom and discourse (ie: how it connects to GOP attacks on DEI and CRT, right-wing promotion of book-banning, etc.).

Former Police Federation Chairman, Maurice Morello, has told the McGrail Inquiry he attempted to submit a complaint against the former Commissioner. He says he was told by the Police Authority there was no mechanism in place to submit a bullying claim. Mr Morello, whose relationship with Mr McGrail was fraught, said the GPA was supportive but didn't have the ‘oomph' to take on the police. The meeting however was never recorded or minuted, and the GPA denies it took place. Jonathan Sacramento had the details.Members of the European Scrutiny Committee in the UK Parliament have again expressed alarm over arrangements for entry and exit of Gibraltar being discussed in the Treaty negotiations. We hear the insights from the Junior Brexit Minister David Rutley, as well as the reaction of Fabian Picardo, who has written to the Chaiman of the Committee to say that any impression that British sovereignty may be diminished in a Treaty is “abhorrent”. GBC has launched a public opinion poll about Gibraltar's future. The data gathered will be used in a new programme called “The Needle.” The poll covers questions on the treaty negotiations, identity and more, and is a collaboration with Gateway Media. Anton Calderon was in the studio to tell us more about the poll and how it will shape the new programme. And, Lawrence Riches is driving down from Gibraltar Point in Lincolnshire to Gibraltar in a 101 year old Model T Ford. His drive aims to raise funds for Cancer Relief.

This past week, the legal fallout from investigations into events surrounding the early days of January 2021 continued to unfold. In a turn of events that commanded the national spotlight, Peter Navarro, a key advisor during the Trump administration, found himself drawing a sentence of incarceration. His rendezvous with justice culminated in receiving a sentence of four months of confinement, a conclusion that rake waves in the political circles. At the center of this judicial decision was Navarro's decision to stand his ground in the face of a subpoena issued by the House Select Committee. The recall to this saga begins when Navarro received a subpoena, a legal document that was expected to prompt his contribution to the comprehensive, bipartisan inquiry into the happenings at the Capitol on the sixth of January, 2021. Yet Navarro, no stranger to the pressure of political battles, decided to take a different course. Digging deep into the foundations of the executive branch's rights, he embarked on a daring attempt to fend off the subpoena, invoking what some critics have pointed out as a somewhat controversial doctrine of executive privilege.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Days before the dominant party in the House of Representatives transitioned from the Democrats to the Republicans, over 100 encrypted files were reportedly purged from the erstwhile House Select Committee on Jan. 6's inquiry, according to information obtained by Fox News Digital. Currently, a new probe into the security shortfalls on Jan. 6, 2021, and the undertakings of the preceding select committee is being headed by the House Administration Committee's Oversight Subcommittee, under the chairmanship of Barry Loudermilk, a Republican from Georgia. In an interaction with Fox News Digital, Chairman Loudermilk reported that his inquiry had entered a fresh stage and has received additional backing from fellow Republican and House Speaker Mike Johnson, from Louisiana. This bolstering involves an enhanced allocation of assets to Loudermilk's committee as the practice of examining the Jan. 6 incidents persists. Insiders familiar with the investigative efforts of Chairman Loudermilk's team revealed an important procedural aspect. The preceding select committee, which was under the leadership of Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson from Mississippi, was obligated under the House rules to transfer all materials from their investigation to the newly formed Republican-led panel. This transition in majorities within the House of Representatives ensued post the 2022 midterm elections.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On a new episode of The Mighty, we hear from Coach D and Boston Smalls. Coach D discusses how the GOP has attempted to deflect and distract from the January 6 Commitee hearings by trying to scare Americans about problems that the GOP has been responsible for creating and that the GOP has no plan or desire to fix. Next, we hear from Boston Smalls who addresses a recent Supreme Court ruling that federal border agents cannot face civil lawsuits for constitutional violations for their use of excess force. Boston Smalls ponders why those who argue for no gun regulations by claiming that the Second Amendment is intended to protect people from government tyranny don't complain when the government is permitted to engage in actual tyranny like the Supreme Court allowing federal border agents to kill people while being immune from constitutional civil claims.
