In 2015, on the eve of Valentine's day, the people of Halifax would learn that they aren’t exempt from the type of nightmares that play out on American news stations. A local 19 year old James Gamble and his girlfriend, 23 year old American Lindsay Souvannarath, had taken the first steps in their plot to shoot and kill as many people as possible in the Halifax Shopping Centre food court before taking their own lives, just like the murderous pair they idolized… the Columbine shooters. In ‘Part 8 - Lindsay’s Biggest Fan!?’, one of the tentacles of this twisted story comes full circle as we will be joined by someone who may be Lindsay Souvannarath's biggest fan. Whilst Felicity was working in Engineering she noticed that there were not many women in Engineering and she started a not for profit to get more girls and more women into Engineering. Fear can hold you back from doing what you really desire! Fear can keep you small. This week on the show I caught up with Dr. Amy Silver to talk about all things fear. Fear protects us and warns us of danger but often it can get too loud. Dr. Amy Silver is a highly sought-after speaker and mentor in the area of fear and fear management. Amy is a psychotherapist and is experienced in many therapies, behavioral, cognitive, mindfulness-based stress to name a few. Amy has worked for many years works in the world of therapy and now works in business and works with people to move through their fears so it does not interrupt communication, collaboration, ability to change, and ability to create. Fear can eat our potential. Amy has written a book called ‘The Loudest Guest’, to help people move through their fears, achieve more, and get what they want. Amy correlates Fear to being a guest at a party and that she is not the only guest at the party and that there are other guests at the party that she can pay attention to. We talk about how fear keeps you safe and we discussed how we can have conversations with ourselves to gain control and to identify the trigger of fear. We want to be able to use the fear voice to our advantage. Fear can look like avoidance or reacting, for example not wanting to speak up in a meeting or have a courageous conversation or perhaps not make a deeper relationship because we don’t want to get hurt. Fear can also be attacking. If you are wanting to work on how you work with your fears when this is a great podcast to tune in to. This week on the Lady Leadership I caught up with Shannon Gillieland. Shannon is the Founder of Pronto Bottle. Pronto bottle is the world's first self sanitising baby bottle. When Shannon became a first-time mum she experienced the issues around having sterilised and ready to go bottles for her daughter and found this to be a big hassle, particularly when travelling with her daughter. She decided to see if she could come up with some better solutions to this issue and pronto bottle was born! I talked to Shannon about coming up with an idea right through to execution, how her background led to this, and how she went about this. Shannon didn’t just dive headfirst into this - she spent a lot of time surveying other parents and seeing what their pain points are, she then spent a lot time researching various technologies including UV light sterilisation, then she realised that she needed to build a support team around her and also bring in some experts. We discussed how Shannon went from having an idea to building a product, to building a business and building a team and all the steps and stages of that. When she faced overwhelm and a feeling of there is so much to do. She knew that she needed to create a framework of support around her to support not only building a product but building the knowledge that she needed to build a company. Tune into this episode as Shannon shares her journey plus her path to investment and hiring abroad. Helen is a great mate of mine and she inspires me to live my best life regularly! We got to sit down and have a chat again to talk all things getting out of your comfort zone to grow. Helen Marshall is a certified Primal Health Coach & founder of the grain free food range Primal Alternative. Helen hosts the Primal Alternative Podcast on the Wellness Couch which is the number one ranked health and wellness podcast station in Australia. She is a Motivational Speaker on grass roots community centric change, overcoming limiting beliefs and creating an exceptional life. Faced with a health crisis which included chronic nausea, constipation, insomnia, physical pain, headaches, brain fog, depression, anxiety and phobias, Helen returned to a diet of plants and animals to reclaim her health. She ditched grains, sugar and seed oils and embraced sunshine, sleep, nature and connection. Helen qualified as a Primal Health Coach to let other women know that they were not on their own on their health journey and that they too could reclaim their health and change their life just with some diet and lifestyle tweaks and community behind them. But she got kick back, Helen’s clients told her that going grain free was hard – their were time poor and found themselves falling off the wagon. People found it hard to go without pizza, bread, cookies and lollies. So Helen offered to create a range of Primal Alternatives to the foods people love to make going grain free easy. Helen was told that her products were life changing and she felt compelled to get the range to the whole of Australia but the thought of factories didn’t light her up and besides – she didn’t have any capital. Helen was inspired to share her successful baking business so that other women with a passion for clean living could start their own home business, doing what they love and make a difference in their community. The Primalista Baking Licence launched on Boxing Day 2016 and to date over 140 incredible women have said yes to this opportunity. Primal Alternative now has an online store and over 250 stockists across Australia, the UK, New Zealand and the US. In 2017 Quirky Cooking collaborated with Primal Alternative to bring a ready made version of their Life Changing Dough to the community. Before ditching the rat race, Helen was a Fitness Instructor and Personal trainer then a Business Manager for a leading recruitment company in the city. Helen has worked with women all of her life listening to their desires around health, work and lifestyle and has combined those skills to bring her greatest contribution yet – the Primalista Baking Licence. Helen lives on 100 acres of wilderness in Albany, WA with her husband Mike and their children Sam & Milly. She likes pilates, massage, coffee with her bestie, sunbathing, meditation, walks in nature and champagne in the spa. I had a great delight this week to interview two guests on the show - Shari Medini and Karissa Tunis. Parenting experts and founders of the popular website, Adore Them Parenting, Shari and Karissa used their time over Covid to write a book - called Parenting whilst working from home. Shari and Karissa had both been working from home for about a decade whilst raising their families and creating their businesses - so they knew through their own experiences how to effectively combine the needs of both.As more parents work from home than ever before, there are unique challenges when it comes to meeting the demands of their job, helping their kids thrive, and finding even five minutes to take care of themselves. Parenting While Working from Home offers tips, strategies, and reflections to help parents balance their careers, connect with their kids, and establish their inner strength over the course of a year.We discussed that it is ok to be a working parent and we discussed some practical strategies to help combine the two. Plus we discussed how to figure this out for you and your schedule and your family. We also talked about what do you really need and also hobbies. You are going to absolutely love this chat! Thanks, Shari and Karissa for being on the show! This week I had the great pleasure to catch up with Wanda Toro Turini! You would describe Wanda as a seasoned entrepreneur! Wanda has a Doctorate in Pharmacy and was in critical care and emergency medicine who always had an interest in the business. She was always the person who had great ideas and wanted to make a change - as such she saw her career shifting to the marketing world. She had the opportunity to work in Marketing in the pharmaceutical space and learn so much from a group of senior people. As such Wanda found herself in corporate and being groomed for a senior role I but saw those around her and saw the time that they had to travel and be away from their families and decided that all though she wasn’t even married nor did she have children that she wanted something different. She literally dived off the cliff and created her own business because she couldn’t launch her business as it would have been a conflict of interest with where she worked currently. Through creating her own business Wanda has been able to work in all parts of the world and adjust her working to fit in with her lifestyle and children.Have a listen - you are going to love listening to Wanda’s journey, the lessons that she has learned, and how her and her businesses continue to evolve. This week on the Lady Leadership show I interviewed Gabrielle Dolan for the 2nd time. I loved catching up with Gabrielle again and this time we talked about Gabrielle’s 6th book - Magnetic stories. Gabrielle has definitely used her time in Covid well to come out with a new book! In this chat, we talk about what makes a ‘Magnetic story’ and how businesses can use these both with their customers and with their teams to share about their businesses and tell their story. We discussed how these stories are what get customers and teams to understand the ethos of a company and connect with a company on a deeper level, to understand where they have come from and what they have done. Gabrielle cautions that this, not a timeline - it is the why and what has formed a company. When Gabrielle was writing the book she went on the hunt to discover the great stories behind many companies. She wanted to hear the great stories of how companies came into being. She discovered the incredible story behind Barbie and how Barbie came into being which blew her mind as she had not encouraged her daughters to have Barbies. She heard stories of restaurants and patrons that were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary at a particular restaurant. We also talked about what it takes to write a book, how Gabrielle writes her books, and how the book is broken down. If you are wanting to learn how to tell powerful stories that connect then definitely check out Gabrielle’s work at gabrielledolan.com.About me: My name is Samantha McIntyre and after 30 years in business and technology - from starting out on the helpdesk to the C suite, being on Executive boards, and being a mother and entrepreneur! Let's think about someone in our life, or maybe even you, who you would say qualifies as a very independent person. This person may show that they hardly ask for help and prefer to do things on their own. This person may also prefer to live a more solo led lifestyle. You may even label this person as strong and resilient. As much as that is true, this is also often a trauma response from something that happened earlier in our lives. For me, my first memory of feeling it is safer to just do things on my own was when I was about 5 years old and my dad wanted to teach me how to ride a two-wheel bike. Because I was learning, I fell a lot. I scraped myself up, it hurt and I became scared and frustrated. My dad, not knowing how to comfort me, became angry. The next time he left for work, I took matters into my own hands and taught myself how to ride a bike. From this very young age, I learned how to comfort and support myself and grew a deep belief that it would be better for me to do things on my own. However, this doesn't normally lead to quality relationships and life. I struggled in work if it had anything do with a team. I pushed people out of my life and my relationships struggled. All until I learned how to heal those independent parts of me and let my younger self know that it is ok to ask for support, to struggle, to fail and to be seen doing it all. In this Vlog, I talk more in depth about my story and lead you through an integration practice to begin to speak the needs to your younger self so that you may begin to open yourself to more supportive relationships. My name is Lauren Bentley and I am here to act as a guide to lead you safely into your body to create home within. SFC Matt Tardio is a retired Army Special Forces soldier and law enforcement officer. Tardio served as an Engineer Sergeant in the United States Army Special Forces. In addition to completing the Special Forces Qualification Course (Q Course) and follow-on engineer training, Tardio is also sniper qualified and a graduate of Ranger School, among others.Tardio gives a good breakdown of his experience in Ranger school before we talk in general about his three deployments, two of which were to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Special Forces soldiers normally deploy to train and advise an indigenous force and we go through some of how that was applied to the Afghan National Army and villages they operated around.I really enjoyed this episode and look forward to sitting down again with Matt to talk more about his career. For as far back as history can tell, inhabitants of Cape Breton Island have found sustenance in our fisheries, our forests, our coal, Steel, and of course tourism. These industries have brought people to Cape Breton from around the world or sent a little bit of Cape Breton to them. But, if we were considering the island’s greatest exports, well that may come as a bit of a surprise. An unassuming Cape Bretoner, with a smile much bigger than his ego, is responsible for some of the world's biggest songs by some of the world's biggest artists. It's fair to say that Gordie Sampson was able to send a taste of Cape Breton Island to more people than our natural industries ever could and he has the Grammys to show for it. After achieving success in Canada as a solo performer, Gordie found his place in writing for others. As it all turned out, his ability to connect clever lyrics with traditional Celtic inspired melody has made him a go to for country music's biggest stars. To name just a few, Gordie’s songs were recorded by: WIllie Nelson, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Luke Bryan, Martina MacBride, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Rymes, Miley Cyrus, Bon Jovi, and perhaps his biggest... the Grammy award winning song by Carrie Underwood 'Jesus Take the Wheel". So needless to say, Gordie has unique insight into the music business and a hell of a lot of stories. In this episode of Nighttime, I'm proud to be joined by Cape Breton's hit maker Gordie Sampson. In this episode of The Best Practices Show, Dr. Sam Low highlights four critical areas in which to improve your practice's efficiency, profitability and customer relationships. He brings his 25 years of practicing, teaching and consulting expertise to the challenge of evolving habitual office systems to meet challenges faced by dental practices of all sizes. Dr. Low shares concrete strategies in four key areas of practice management. He talks at length about optimizing the role of dental hygienists to best leverage their talents and also introduces the concept of a “product market center” through which to sell dental items for the convenience of patients as well as to establish a revenue stream. Dr. Low also suggests ideas for getting as much value as possible from recall appointments and the many long-term impacts of Covid19 on dental and periodontal practices. Today's presentation took place as part of the Covid19 Dental Relief Conference. Main Takeaways Your dental hygienist is also your new patient coordinator. (13:37) Review dental-assisted hygiene with enhanced efficiency. (21:00) Create an oral hygiene product market center. (37:05) Ways of ensuring standard recall appointments are effective and valuable. (47:43) The 60-minute appointment is over – especially for PPO patients. (52:16) Key Quotes “We are losing out by not maximizing what we do with our hygienists. They are not cleaning people. You know what they are? You watch. They're the nurse practitioners.” “Stop using the words, “fix” our “treat” ever in a dental practice. Always use the word manage.” “(Patients) need to walk out of there knowing that gum disease is … an autoimmune disease.” “Dental hygienists: If you have anxiety and fear about going back to work and you are working with a practice that has always had quality infection control, you have nothing to worry about.” “If you are in a PPO practice, especially in a hardcore PPO practice, you are not going to be able to have hygiene appointments for 60 minutes. It's not going to happen.” “Look outside of dentistry (for business models). Start reading things outside of just dental magazines.” “Teledentristy – used the right way – is going to be probably one of the most important areas we have.” Snippets Four revenue-related elements to examine in your hygiene practice (8:05-9:31 Leveraging your dental hygienist appropriately. (14:05-14:57) Periodontitis: Takeaways patients need to have. (19:11-19:34) Four buckets for periodontitis classification. (24:28-24:55) What you're optimally doing in the second hour of a new patient appointment. (26:58-27:33) Valuable laser applications. (35:20-36:36) Systems for co-marketing and offering dental products. (41:40-42:52) Strategies for reducing your rate of no-shows and cancellations. (49:38-51:50) The evolving role of teledentistry. 1:00-1:00:26 Bio of guest Dr. Sam Low is an associate faculty member of the L.D. Pankey Institute and Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida's College of Dentistry. In this episode, we will continue to explore this tragic events that form the Nova Scotia Shooting and Arson Rampage. Our guest is a resident of Portapique who chance provided a unique perspective to discuss this case. He was there before the killing started as he spent the evening having supper with his neighbors Jamie and Greg Blair, just hours before they were killed, and then after the shooting stopped, he surveyed his neighborhood in his truck only to be ordered back to his home by first responders... But, even after returning home he found himself pulled into the center of the story when the gunman's shoeless and distraught girlfriend appeared on his door step asking for help. His story will certainly help fill in some blanks. Tonight, in this episode of Nighttime, we are going to be joined by Portapique resident Leon Joudrey. Once upon a time, I loved Tim Horton's. I drank their coffee and I ate their fresh baked goods, but those days are gone. The love affair is long over. To put it bluntly, I think they suck now. What puzzles me, is that it wasn't always this way and that's why I'm left with burning questions... When did they lose their way, why did they lose their way, and will they ever get back the magic they used to have? It wasn't until I happened upon a piece of investigative journalism in a MacLean's magazine that the full picture of this betrayal became apparent. The piece was titled "How Tim Horton's lost it's way" and as I read it the veil of marketing that had obscured the slow decline of Tim Horton’s was forcefully pulled away and Canada's dirty secret was exposed. Some of the points raised in that article will be discussed and expanded upon in this episode as in this episode, I'm joined by author and journalist Corey Mintz. Our topic is the DECLINE of Tim Hortons.
