#182 Rewiring Your Brain Using Neurofeedback Therapy with Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge

How Humans Heal

In today's episode, I'm excited to be speaking with Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge. She is an integrative and pediatric mental health expert specializing in the field of neurofeedback therapy. Dr. Roseann is the founder and director of the Global Institute of Children's Mental Health. She is also a Connecticut Certified School Psychologist, Board Certified Neurofeedback Provider (BCN), podcast host of “It's Gonna Be Ok! with Dr. Roseann” as well as founder of Dr. Roseann LLC and creator of the new Neurotastic supplement line. Dr. Roseann's Extensive Background in Mental Health With over 30 years of experience working in mental health, Dr. Roseann has dedicated her career to helping children and families improve conditions like ADHD, anxiety, depression, OCD and various learning disabilities. She has always taken a holistic, natural approach in her practice. Even from a very young age, Dr. Roseann knew she wanted to go into the field of psychology and psychiatry. When she was just 5 years old, a friend of her mother's asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. Out of the blue, Dr. Roseann responded “I want to be a psychiatrist.” Of course, later on she realized that psychiatrists focus more on medications, whereas psychologists utilize counseling and therapy. Nevertheless, this childhood premonition set her on a path to becoming an expert in children's mental health. Throughout her education and career, Dr. Roseann focused on gaining as much hands-on experience as possible. She actively volunteered and completed internships to refine her skills. She quickly discovered that her passion was working with children and families. Dr. Roseann found that she felt a deep sense of empathy for these clients. She also realized that when children receive the right help, their brains are extremely adept at absorbing positive changes. These changes can then last a lifetime due to neuroplasticity in the developing brain. Dr. Roseann witnessed countless times how a child's struggle became an impetus for the whole family to improve their mental and physical health. Once the parents saw improvements in their child from natural solutions, they became much more open to making changes in their own lives as well. In this way, the child's difficulty actually became an opportunity for growth, change and healing for the entire family unit. This inspired Dr. Roseann to continue refining her integrative techniques to help children thrive and set them up for a lifetime of mental and emotional wellbeing. An Overview of the Neurofeedback Process Neurofeedback falls under the umbrella of biofeedback therapies. It takes advantage of the brain's neuroplasticity or ability to form new neural pathways throughout life. Neurofeedback utilizes technology to train the brain to produce healthier patterns of brain wave activity. In a nutshell, neurofeedback works like this: The person is hooked up to a computer via electrodes on the scalp that can detect the frequency of electrical signals from different regions of the brain in real-time. The computer provides instant auditory or visual feedback when the brain produces the desired brain wave pattern. For example, you may hear a pleasant tone or see an animated figure on the screen. This positive reinforcement teaches the brain to repeat these types of beneficial brain wave patterns. Over time, the brain learns to operate with healthier levels of activity in key areas. This can drastically improve symptoms. Then these healthy changes stick around even after the neurofeedback sessions end. Some key points about neurofeedback: · It has been around since the 1960s and now has over 3,000 research studies demonstrating its effectiveness for a wide array of conditions. · It is non-invasive and has minimal side effects for most people when done properly. · It creates lasting changes in brain function that persist even after the sessions are complete. · Conditions that research shows neurofeedback can improve include ADHD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain, addiction, insomnia, traumatic brain injury, concussions, migraines and more. · It has also been used for peak performance training in high achievers without health conditions. · Typical sessions last about 30 minutes and are done 2-3 times per week. · The average treatment plan consists of about 20-30 sessions over a course of about 6 months. But some people need more or less time. · It can be done in a practitioner's office or through home-based equipment and video sessions online. QEEG brain mapping is necessary before starting neurofeedback. This allows to see exactly which regions of the brain need to be retrained. Then you can have extremely precise neurofeedback protocols targeting an individual's specific needs. Dr. Roseann shared an example of a client she has with chronic Lyme disease. The woman had been doing neurofeedback targeting anxiety, but her progress had plateaued. So Dr. Roseann ordered a follow-up brain map. She could then see that one specific area of the brain was still highly over-activated. Though this region was tiny, it was likely contributing to the stuck point. So Dr. Roseann modified the neurofeedback protocol to focus intensively on calming down just this one small dysregulated area. On a follow-up visit shortly after, the client already reported noticeable improvements in her anxiety levels. The brain is incredible in how specific interventions can create cascading benefits throughout the whole system. It is ideal to identify a practitioner who specializes in your particular condition to optimize the results. The Keys to Successful Mental Health Recovery Neurofeedback, while extremely powerful, is not a magic bullet on its own. We also need to learn new behaviors and lifestyle habits to replace ingrained patterns that contribute to conditions like anxiety or poor focus. A regulated brain doesn't automatically know what to do. We need both top-down training of brain activity itself with neurofeedback, along with bottom-up adjustment of daily habits. For example, empowering parents with tools and strategies to improve their children's focus or mood struggles. Relying solely on medications fails to provide these behavioral change tools. Similarly, neurofeedback alone also will not necessarily teach new behaviors. We need to address the bi-directional relationship between brain activity patterns and ingrained daily habits. We need both aspects to see a lasting mental health transformation. We also need to build a lifestyle that will support our brain and nervous system including: · Stress management skills like meditation, breathing exercises, spending time in nature · Counseling and processing trauma, grief or difficult experiences · Prioritizing bonding time with loved ones · Identifying and enforcing proper boundaries · Cultivating hobbies and activities that bring joy and relaxation · Learning to protect our nervous systems from excessive stimulation and input · Letting go of negative thought patterns and self-criticism Without these behavior changes, it's all too easy to fall back into dysregulation and reactive states, even if the brain has been retrained. The brain-behavior connection truly goes both ways. Nutrition is another element that we need to address. Factors like blood sugar balance, hydration, gut health and food sensitivities play a major role in mental health. Magnesium is one especially important compound for the brain and nervous system. Unfortunately, chronic stress depletes magnesium reserves quickly. Magnesium supplementation can provide fast improvements in focus, anxiety, sleep quality and more in those with deficiencies. It is also important to address factors like gut inflammation, infections and environmental toxins in order to resolve mental health conditions at their root. Mental health is not simply a matter of inadequate neurotransmitters or faulty brain wiring, though those do play a role. We must look at the whole system to facilitate true healing. The bottom line is that mental health recovery requires consistently making ourselves and our self-care a top priority. Unfortunately, chronic stress has almost become normalized and expected today. Yet this level of strain on our minds and nervous systems is clearly unsustainable. Even small but regular actions can add up over time to bring our nervous systems back into balance. This is protective against inflammation, cognitive impairment, emotional reactivity, immune dysfunction and so many other effects of excessive stress. Starting with as little as ten minutes a day of breathing exercises, yoga, meditation, journaling or other calming practices can work wonders. When we model this type of self-care and stress resilience for our children and loved ones, it provides them permission to also take time to recharge and reset. Our close relationships thrive when we are fully present. Making self-care non-negotiable ultimately allows us to be more available for others. We also need to view even small steps in a more positive light. Our culture often focuses on perfectionism and rapid transformation. But in reality, it's consistent tiny changes, when done with patience and compassion for ourselves, that enable us to climb to new heights. You Are Not Defined by Your Diagnosis A diagnosis does not have to define our futures. There are countless reversal stories of conditions like autoimmunity, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, depression and more in people who were willing to believe in the possibility of change and take ownership of their own healing journeys. A diagnosis provides important clues about where to focus our efforts. But it is not permanent or all-encompassing. We can decide how much power we give it over our lives. We always have the opportunity to learn more about what our bodies and minds might need to restore balance and function. We need to reconnect with what our symptoms are trying to communicate. From this place of curiosity and compassion, we can then seek the right support to explore our root causes and the multifaceted steps to genuine healing.

She is also a member of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research (ISNR) and The Association of Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback (AAPB). "There I was sitting in my office in Ridgefield, CT, tapping my pen on my desk wondering how I was going to help this boy that was so ADHD. If I looked away, Alec literally would be climbing the walls and contorting his body to the point that he looked like he was having a seizure. After getting in trouble practically every minute at school at age eight, his mother came to me out of desperation looking for a way to help her bright blued-eyed boy. Even though I was personally holistic, my traditional training was psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, so I recommended a consult with a psychiatrist thinking that I was going to help this little cutie pie and his worried family. Because he was unfocused, couldn't put his thoughts down on the page, and always on the red light on the behavioral chart, Alec began a course of treatment with several psychostimulants that resulted in the side effects of increased heart rate, caused him to be flat and not enjoy anything, made him cranky, reduced his eating for an already wiry kid, and there were many a sleepless night to boot. His parents were beside themselves and in the early days of the internet, they found neurofeedback and were elated that there was something natural with decades of research behind it. Off they went and sought treatment and within a few months, Alec's best features began to shine – not only was he focused but he was able to put his thoughts together, connect with others, and joyous laughter came for the first time because he wasn't in trouble all the time. The impulsive, unfocused Alec was gone and I was a believer! Neurofeedback became my passion too and opened my eyes that healing happens with natural therapies that support the brain and body. And ever since I got to meet Alec, my office has helped thousands of children and families. Today, we use evidence-based holistic therapies to cultivate happiness, hope, and change in children, individuals, and families. If you're a worried parent, and you want to see your child go from a stressed-out mess to a happy and focused kid, call our office to speak with one of our client specialists or come to one of our free workshops. https://drroseann.com/

Breaking into a creative field, whether you choose to be self-employed or not, can really leave you feeling like you're up the creek without a paddle. Who are you supposed to talk to, and when? Also, where do you find them? What are you supposed to do in the meantime until things...happen? And once you start doing that thing, how you do know when to stop? We talked about it all at this panel discussion I moderated with three dynamic young artists, Brendan Keen, Mariel Capanna, and Brittany Bennett, about navigating the difficult transition from school to the working world. Each of them is following a unique path, and has tons to share about what they did wrong...and right! About our guests Brendan Keen https://www.brendankeenstudio.com/ Brendan Keen is an artist and fabricator currently based in West Philadelphia. He was a transfer student at PAFA, where he majored in sculpture. He graduated with a BFA 2012, and was awarded the William Emlen Cresson Memorial Travel scholarship, which meant he stayed a fifth year at PAFA and received a certificate in 2013. When he finished school, he joined the West Philadelphia-based arts collaborative studio and workshop, the Philadelphia Traction Company. Along with the other artists at Traction, he exhibited his sculpture and collaborative works in Philadelphia and San Francisco. For the past eight years Brendan has worked full time as a self-employed Artist and fabricator, creating sculptural installations for public and private clients, including the Logan hotel, the W hotel, the Discovery Center, and private residences. In between jobs, Brendan travels whenever possible, including across Western Europe and around Iceland via bicycle, and most recently across the U.S. in a DIY sprinter camper van. Mariel Capanna https://marielcapanna.com/ Mariel Capanna is a fine artist specializing in fresco who graduated with a BFA from PAFA 2012, and she was awarded the William Emlen Cresson Memorial Travel scholarship, which means she spent an extra year at PAFA and was awarded a certificate in 2013. She's exhibited many places, including Adams and Ollman (Portland), Central Park (Los Angeles), Gross McCleaf Gallery (Philadelphia), and Good Weather (North Little Rock), COOP (Nashville) and at the Bowtie Project (Los Angeles). Brittany Bennett https://bennettbc.wixsite.com/rad-river https://www.streamstudioschop.com/ https://www.brittanycbennett.com/ Brittany Bennett is a medical illustrator who graduated from the joint PAFA/PENN program in 2014. After graduating, she completed a graduate program for Medical and Biological Illustration at Johns Hopkins. She currently works at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), where half her week is in Stream Studios servicing the hospital network at large, and the other half she runs RIVER: a medical illustration service just for the Radiology Department. On this week's episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, we had a conversation with Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge. Dr. Roseann is a Connecticut Certified School Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), and Board Certified Neurofeedback Provider (BCN). We discussed the importance of the very complex tool for treating kids with disabilities called neurofeedback. Research has actually shown that neurofeedback is far more effective and safer to use than psychostimulants, which are more than likely to have a side effect.    Neurofeedback is a process that changes the brainwaves in a child's brain using measurement and reinforcement. People are wary of changing the electrical movement in their child's brain, but research has shown that neurofeedback provides an abundance of benefits. Dr. Roseann explains how the procedure works and how it has been under major scrutiny by medical scientists and professionals.     Takeaways:  [1:14] What is neurofeedback [8:52] Targeting working memory for neurofeedback [20:55] How neurofeedback is effective for kids with ADHD [23:41] Why care providers are not sharing this information [29:10] At-home neurofeedback     Where to find Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge: https://drroseann.com/ Tiktok, Youtube, & IG: Dr. Roseann Facebook: Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge     Memorable quotes:  “It's based on operative conditioning. That when you give somebody a reward, they are more likely to repeat that behavior. And the brain is the same; it learns it.”   “So that's neurofeedback. You just reinforce the brain for changing from an unhealthy to healthy brainwave, and it's very possible and it's lasting. You can directly target very specific regions.”   “The brain then creates a new set point, a new homeostasis, and it's able to function at a higher rate outside of the neurofeedback session on its own.”   “I was like, this is amazing. I haven't slept, you know, because my baby was up, and I could just do this neurofeedback in my frontal lobes, and I can feel alert and I can feel good.”   “If anything in this podcast is opening your mind, to other possibilities, that nutrition and nutrients are the foundation to build the brain. And sometimes those things alone can rectify things.”   “There's so much amazing research of kids with ADHD getting neurofeedback, and we know that it improves inattention, we know that it improves impulsivity, and we even know for kids that are moody or anxious, that it can improve those kinds of components.”   “Why aren't primary care providers sharing that diet has to be the foundation? The diet feeds the brain. And then when you can reduce the inflammation in the body, bringing in therapies like neurofeedback to really optimize that brain, why isn't that, you know?    “Since 2012, the American Academy of Pediatrics says neurofeedback is a level 1 intervention, the same as psych meds… but pediatricians are not telling parents that.”

Our guest today is Paloma A Capanna. Paloma has been speaking and writing about the Second Amendment as the modern civil rights movement for nearly fifteen years. In more than 25-years in state and federal courtrooms, Paloma has represented plaintiffs in ground-breaking civil rights litigation. An award-winning activist and writer, Paloma chases truth until it's treed. The truth she has been hunting down most recently is what really happened on January 6th 2021. And her latest work is a book titled "January 6 x 20 Things You Need to Know". 1) Before we dive into your newest book, can you help us better understand the significance of some breaking news from last week? One of the “J6” defendants was acquitted of the charges against him. Could this be a good sign of other acquittals coming? 2) Now let's dive into your newest book. How does this book differ or expound on your previous work? Synopsis: Walk through the twenty most important aspects of January 6 that the media and the prosecution and the FBI don't want you to get right in their quest for a narrative that conveniently blames the day on the American people. When you cut through the noise, there is a simple set of facts. The Capitol was open. Rallies were permitted to go off on all four sides of the building. Plus eighteen more truths, all with the supporting arguments and analysis." 3) The more we unpack that day, the events of January 6th 2021 seem master-planned - but by who and how? And then once put into motion, a myriad of individuals simply became caught up in it all? 4) What is on the horizon for all of this and the people who are still being held in prison?

“You have to calm the brain. If you don't calm down that nervous system, no new learning is possible,” explains Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge, Integrative and Pediatric Mental Health Expert and Founder of The Global Institute of Children's Mental Health with thirty years of experience. In today's episode of The Momologist™, Dr. Capanna-Hodge discusses common mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders in children and the ways her program Brain Behavior Reset can improve mental health outcomes without medication.    Parenting a child with ADHD or executive dysfunction can be challenging and frustrating. Dr. Capanna-Hodge uses a method called BENES, an acronym standing for: begin with one goal, establish consistency, use neuroscience, emphasize desired behavior, and supplements. Through tools like neurofeedback, electromagnetic pulse therapy, and supplements, children with behavioral and developmental disorders can get much-needed help without the risks that come with medication use.    Tune into this week's episode of The Momologist™ for a conversation about the brain, neurofeedback, and the challenges of raising a child who suffers from developmental, behavioral, or mental disorders. Learn more about the steps you can take to help calm your child's brain.   Quotes • “In these 30 years, I have seen a dramatic decrease in the mental health of children and families. Certainly, there are very overwhelmed mothers, really frustrated that they're going down rabbit hole after rabbit hole trying to help their kids with things like ADHD, and autism, and anxiety which are common today.”(7:29-7:56) • “Parents are the most influential, the most powerful people in a kid's life. Do not give your power away. Do not outsource that. What that means is that you might need to learn that our kids show up as they are. No kid is perfect. No parent is perfect. We have to alter what we're doing, speak to our kids in a way that their brains can hear it. Not them, but their brains. It means that we have to reinforce those behaviors that we want.” (19:47-20:20)  • “When your mommy instinct is a little like ‘hey something's going on,' that's when you take action. Don't wait for somebody. The school isn't gonna often come to you until it's bad. Like real bad.” (22:54-23:08) • “The number one barrier to healing is parents not following the treatment plan.” (56:38-56:47) • “You have to calm the brain. If you don't calm down that nervous system, no new learning is possible, no healing is possible and that's where we need to start.” (1:24:38-1:24:49)   Stats • “1 in 6 children aged 2 to 8 years have a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. 1 in 5 children ages 13 to 18 have or will have a serious mental illness. The average delay between onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10 to 34 in the US. Moreover, an increasing number of studies indicate that the first signals of behavior problems can appear as early as infancy and toddlerhood. 1 in 5 children entering Kindergarten carries a mental health diagnosis.” (00:45-01:32) • “It takes 34 times to do something where your brain learns it at an automatic level. But for a kid with attention, learning, behavior, or emotional issues, it's a minimum of 3x that amount. That's 100 times.” (36:42-36:57)   Notable links:   Website: https://drroseann.com/   BrainBehavior Reset™ Toolkit for ADHD & Executive Functioning: https://www.drrotips.com/toolkitef-homepage   IG: @drroseann FB: @DrRoseannCapannaHodge   Upcoming Webinars: www.DrRoseann.com/webinar   Subscribe to our Mailing List: www.TheOfficialMomologist.com   Connect with The Momologist™: https://www.instagram.com/theofficialmomologist/ https://www.facebook.com/TheOfficialMomologist   ------   The Momologist™ is a production of The Reel Media Group.  For general inquiries, please email: contact@thereelmediagroup.com

IN THIS PODCAST:OCD ERP CBT and OCD treatment OCDOCD, obsessive-compulsive disorder, is not always related to anxiety and it cannot be treated as anxiety. OCD is about the over-activation of the nervous system, the obsessive thinking, the compulsive behaviors that are deeply rooted in behavioral habituation … people inadvertently reinforce people's OCD all the time. (Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge)People may comfort others who suffer from OCD instead of reminding them that they are capable of self-regulating as well. ERPExposure and response prevention is about educating the client in the neuroscience behind behavioral changes and enabling them to self-regulate based on behavioral changes. [The clients] get the insight, they understand, then they understand how to break free from the accommodation. They learn how to talk back to their OCD and their worries or intrusive thoughts. (Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge)Clients are given the tools to overcome their OCD by learning about what their triggers are. Later in therapy, clients interact with safe exposure to those triggers and learn behavioral strategies to overcome the OCD and compulsive needs for rituals. CBT and OCD treatmentCognitive-behavioral therapy is an important aspect of OCD treatment. However, it needs to work in unison with behavioral strategies and not only be based on talk therapy. You are using [CBT] in a way that is relevant to the OCD and you're really focusing on the exposure. With CBT we're doing cognitions and behaviors … but CBT alone is not as effective as when we incorporate the exposure part. (Dr. Roseann Capanna-Hodge)If you work...

IN THIS PODCAST:Holistic treatment Biofeedback and neurofeedback Becoming certified Holistic treatmentHolistic strategies do not go against or challenge other medical approaches to wellness, recovery, and healing. Clients do not have to pick one or the other. You can work with a combination of different approaches to wellness without thinking that you must “pick a side”. The neuroscience behind changing behavior is to regulate the nervous system first, then come in with new learning. When we try to separate those [by saying] “oh, you only need to do meds” or “oh, you only need to do counseling” when the person is in full limbic activation … and that's not how the brain works. (Dr. Roseann Cappana-Hodge)Culturally people think that taking a pill or going to counseling is going to resolve the issue in full. However, full treatment often requires a set of different strategies, depending on the severity of the issue. Your brain struggles to learn when it has shut down due to illness, stress, or unresolved trauma. Taking a pill may mask symptoms but it will not resolve the problem. This is why holistic treatment can be life-changing for some people because it combines physical wellness with mental and emotional wellness for an integrated approach to recovery. Biofeedback and neurofeedbackBiofeedback is, through conscious control, learning how to regulate what we call our autonomic nervous system, and neurofeedback is subconscious control. I loved every second of recording this incredibly powerful and eye-opening episode with award-winning children's mental health expert, Dr Roseann Capanna-Hodge.   If your child is struggling with their mental health and you as a parent aren't sure of the best way to support them, this episode will hold SO much power for you.   In this episode we covered: Why children are experiencing so much more anxiety these days What the difference is between stress and anxiety How to manage anxiety in children How lifestyle and wellbeing impact our kids' mental health Understanding the gut and gene mutations when it comes to this topic How screen-time and devices play a role and how to realistically manage it The number one thing we can do to ensure we are protecting our children's mental health (this one will shock you!)   It was a total joy to speak to Dr Roseann about this very important topic (she also brought so much of that warm Italian-American humour and fun to the show!) and I know any parent or caregiver will benefit from the content as profoundly as I did.   Perhaps this isn't for you but you have a friend whose child is suffering. Please share this with them.   These are not easy times for our children to live in, but we, as parents, can step up in many different ways to help them through it.   So much of my coaching work focuses on going back through inner child to uncover limiting beliefs unconsciously carried through our lives. If we, as parents, can be more conscious of our children's needs, I'll hopefully be out of a job by the time our kids are grown up! In a weird way, that's the dream!   You can find Dr Roseann: Dr Roseann's website Dr Roseann's Instagram Dr Roseann's book, It's Going to be OK, was out May 11th Dr Roseann's Children's Health Summit     For private wellness, mindset and life coaching, please visit my website www.laurenvakninecoaching.com   This season of Reconditioned is kindly sponsored by Block Blue Light UK, the UK's leading company for anti-blue light products, to fix sleep issues, eliminate eye strain and improve health.
